Wow! Just added to my to do list:

1. Finally get around to reading the copy of Watchmen I've had collecting dust on my shelf for 10 years.

2. Never watch that fucking terrible movie again.

I actually enjoyed the movie though I never read the graphic novel. One of my favorites comic book movies. Gasp! My love of the movie made me worry about this show. But I absolutely loved The Leftovers, so Lindell involvement had me interested. The Leftovers is amazing.

so.. you folks should definitely read Watchmen. i was able to enjoy the Snyder movie for what it was, but if you have ever read and enjoyed a comic or graphic novel (even if you haven't) you should give Watchmen a shot.

The graphic novel is incredibly dark, so TR & AR are perfect for this. I'm excited even more for this project now.

I was probably going to watch this anyway. The Leftovers is genuinely excellent, and ended so well it made me forgive Lindelof for Lost. I was looking forward to seeing what he did with Watchmen (from what I've heard, it's not an adaptation of the comic. It's a new story set in the same world, and maybe featuring some of the same characters.) But now, I'm obviously super hyped.

(And yes, you should read the comic. It's much better than the movie, even though the movie slavishly sticks to the source material. Except for the squid thing, but the squid thing is the only part of the comic I'm not a fan of. I think the movie's change there was for the better.)

I've been wanting Trent & Atticus to tackle some sort of dark superhero tale ever since "Theme For Tetsuo: The Bullet Man", and they couldn't have picked a better project.

Yes, but hopefully the series will also use "needle drop" source music in a good way (I'm thinking of Burns & Novick's Vietnam, rather than Snyder's Watchmen -- which had the WORST use of pre-existing music in cues that I've ever heard in a Hollywood film).

I honestly wouldn't mind if they nix the needle drop thing wholesale – and if they don't, my hope is that HBO's Watchmen uses pre-existing tunes closer to the way True Detective season 1 did, i.e. music that is tonally/emotionally fitting (cue "Eli" by Bosnian Rainbows) as opposed to tailored to the era. When other movies do needle drops (Atomic Blonde comes to mind), it's still so on-the-nose and distracting, even if it's fun.

Vietnam used source music very wisely/tastefully, but even that I could have done without (but again, was used very well).

I don't know about anyone else, but when I read Watchmen for the first time, it never struck me as a quintessential 80s story. I obviously get that it was published and written in that period, but it transcends that setting sooooo much. The fact that I probably read in 2005ish doesn't hurt. So when the Snyder trailers & movie came out and adhered so ridiculously close to an 80s aesthetic, I honestly found it very jarring... which is to say I think it's great that HBO and Lindelof are going for a more present day vibe.

I stopped watching LOST after 2.5 seasons, but I hear great things about The Leftovers, and am also big fan of Prometheus ...so overall, I'm optimistic and excited!

To be fair, Lost season 3 dragged on so much because they didn't know how long the show was going to last. Seasons 4 and 5 were so much better.

Comic Con Watchmen Panel blurb:

Set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, HBO’s upcoming series Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while breaking new ground of its own. From the co-creator of The Leftovers, Damon Lindelof’s new series is set in contemporary 2019 where roughly 30 years have passed since the original Watchmen story. Please join producers and series stars for an exclusive sneak peek of the first episode of the HBO series followed by a panel discussion.

paul_guyet
10-04-2019, 08:54 PM
Okay, just got home. Here are my notes.

Opening scene - brutal, chaotic, overwhelming

Aftermath - Gentle, Bird Box-y piano

Traffic stop - Deep, huge, massive synth repetitions, incredible tension.

Pod Interrogation/Raid - Started off like 'The Background World' but then evolved and got harder, then even harder with more guitars and electronics. Fucking fantastic music for these scenes.

Pre-credits - soft, beautiful prepared piano and something like a xylophone.

Credits - High energy synthy, trademark action-y TRAR.

Overall, nothing really broke the mold, a lot of Bird Box/Vietnam War vibes, although some of the sounds and synths were not as typical for them (I'm thinking mostly of the Halloween-type synths, which were very 70's) but the action scenes (Interrogation/Raid) were very well matched.

But.

The opening scene...

That was THE BEST pairing of Reznor and Ross' music with imagery that I have ever seen. The first five minutes of Watchmen will be spoken of for a long time.

Also! At the Q&A, someone asked about the score. Damon Lindelof answered, here's the transcript:

I have a rule about composers, that they're different from show to show...one of the things that I didn't know about Watchmen was what it was going to sound like and every time I imagined what it would sound like, it sounded like Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. So I called HBO and said "these guys have never done TV before but do you think we could take a shot at them?" and Francesca Orsi said "that is so weird, Trent and Atticus' manager called this morning and they were asking about Watchmen". One of the first things Trent said was "so...are you doing the squid?" and I was like "oh this guy is all the way in". They wrote a lot of this music and sent it to Nikki (director of some of the episodes) and I before we started shooting. They said "we read the script and these are some of the things we were thinking". I'd say close to 80% of the music they wrote before we even shot is in the pilot. We were just trying to make stuff worthy of those guys, they're amazing.

Sounds a lot like how they described The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. They wound up offering a lot more music than just what was used in the film. Sounds like we'll be getting an expanded score, like we were supposed to get (and may possibly someday still get?) with the Bird Box score.

Liking the show so far. It's appreciably very weird, and manages to nail the eclectic nature of the source material.

Trent and Atticus of course have their text book sound here, I wasn't expecting much else. Two of the tracks here sound more explicitly NIN-ey than I'm used to from their scores, I thought that was cool.

Of course there is this effect my familiarity with their stuff has where it's can be a bit distracting from focusing on what's going on in the show/movie, but this isn't their fault.

IMO, if there quality of the rest of the score is at the same level as it was in this episode, it'll be the best able they've ever done. This was like TSN good.

dumb question I'm sure has been asked and answered a lot - do I need to have any familiarity with Watchmen to view this? I've seen the movie but years ago and haven't read the comic... am I doing myself a disservice? Is it going to be complete jibberish to me or will the characters be "introduced"?

You can watch this without having read the comic OR seen the movie, but you will miss alot of the references and be in the dark about things for longer than the rest of us. You'll get the answers you need eventually, but if you're familiar with the source material, things will come together quicker for you.

I echo the sentiments above about how good this episode was, both the actual story as well as Trent & Atticusss's's''eses' phenomenal score. STRONG Social Network vibes, part. on the one track with the 4/4 beat. And you will def. spot some of their signature piano, synth and guitar sounds.

I watched Snyder's Watchmen movie again today for a quick refresher before starting the series (quicker than re-reading Watchmen at least). Regardless of your thoughts on his movie good or bad, you have to acknowledge that is a VERY faithful rendtion of the source material. It stays very close, even line for line & shot for shot at many points. Yes the ending is changed a bit, but as long as you recall was Ozy's original cataclysm idea was in the comic, you're all set before watching this episode (and yes, that comes up in a very fun way in the first episode!). I def. recommend watching the movie and then watching the episode. You'll get alot more out of the show imo.

On a potentially related note, DC has postponed releasing Doomsday Clock #12 until the end of December, after this first season of the show is over. Might just be for marketing purposes & not storywise (part. considering the plot of this series has the Watchmen universe & DC superhero universe spilling into each other, and the show isn't going there i'm sure), but something to keep your eye on.

Also, unless told otherwise by Lindelolf, I'm going to assume that the Miami Vice universe & this are the same and everything that happened there is canon for Don Johnson's character.

The Snyder movie is completely faithful on the surface, but an all out assault on the spirit of the source material.

awesome, love new music from T+A, especially with some type of physical item to get with the music. I get the gripes with no CD but it is an essentially dead format. As long as theres a digital release having it on CD is almost like a novelty nowadays. Now what I wanna know is why wasnt Patriots day and Bird Box released in this way. Here we are years later and still have nothing physical for those two releases but he?releases physical formats for Watchmen before those. I love Trents ambitiousness and eagerness to make new music/ take on new products but at the same time I also wish he would just get all his ducks in a row and finish one project before taking on the next.

Pre-ordered all three vinyl options. So excited for the packaging that will seemingly elucidate finer details of the show. That they were able to get the score out so quickly, by tracking it with the progress within the show is astonishing. The pull and coordination with HBO this must have taken really shines a light on how well respected Atticus and Trent are.

Furthermore, I, too, am getting a Social Network vibe, the only other score they did prior to filming (unless I am mistaken).

If it wasn't for TR's involvement, I wouldn't have even given this a chance.
I must say, the show itself was so bad. Girlfriend and I tried watching it tonight at dinner, and turned it off and put on Canadian election results. That's when you know it's bad, because listening to politics is as fun as watching paint dry.

Finally, that dirty high-octane techno groove from the "In Conversation with" demos is back! It's the bold, exciting side of Hesitation Marks most people never got to hear, but now it's in spotlight with that credits tune, and I couldn't be happier about it. Hope the relevant execs already gave them a call in regards of the inevitable Knight Rider reboot.

The interrogation/raid track was another highlight, the bass gives is that lovely "upbeat paranoia" feel that made me fall in love with Deep so much (here's a real hot take). It wouldn't look out of place on Deviations next to Missing Places and One Way to Get There. And that last piece before Pore Jud is Daid at the end sounded really close to A Minute to Breathe to me, I was honestly expecting the man's voice to kick in any second.

Didn't they start to at least experiment with the soundscape and some motifs going by the script alone? I seem to recall a story about TR handing some material to Fincher and saying something along the lines of "let us know if any of this sounds like the movie you have in your mind" or something. I may be mixing it up with another score, though.

Deterioration is also an issue.

Deterioration is most definitely also an issue with CDs, too. Ever heard of “disc rot?” I have plenty of examples in my closet...

Back on topic, I really like the show so far and can’t wait to see where it goes. That scene with the squids raining from the sky really has me excited/intrigued to see where they go with this show! I also love all the call-backs and references to the comic/movie. I’m apparently one of the minority that actually likes the movie (Though I only watch the 3-hour director’s cut version) and this has made me want to watch that again. The score during the scene where Looking Glass was interrogating that guy in the “pod” was amazing. Several other scenes had noticeably badass score moments, as well. And I love their occasional delicate piano tracks, which (as others have stated) give of Social Network vibes, which is a very, very good thing indeed. I don’t know if I will preorder the vinyl (I also don’t have a record player and would be doing so simply for the artwork and to support them) but I can’t wait to hear the rest of this three-volume (!!) score.

For Social Network they started with the script and also a rough cut of some scenes with Ghosts tracks temped in. They had a script for Dragon Tattoo, but nothing was filmed when composing started.

Aside from making better financial sense, and keeping the anticipation going for longer, it's also totally in keeping with the Watchmen aesthetic to get everything spooled out over a slow release that then later makes sense when you put it all together in retrospect.

Even just within the first episode, there have been lots of allusions to minor subplots and characters from the world of the book that will surely tie in again somehow later on. I bet there will be more in the artwork for these discs.

I don't recommend the movie at all without having read the comic. The movie looks good and is a fun watch, but completely misses most of the messages in the book. That said, the ending of the movie might actually be better than the book, but you'll DEFINITELY want to know the book ending when watching this show.

I would not argue to watch the movie over reading the comics. Of course read Watchmen first if you never have. But if you're strapped for time or just wanna be lazy, watching the movie will at least inform what's in the series so you can follow who people are and what has happened in the past 30 years on this planet. Yes the subtext of Watchmen is not clearly stated in Snyder's movie, but it's better than nothing. And as someone else said, do the 3 hour directors cut, b/c even more ancillary stuff is in there that will help.

I subscribe to HBOGo through Amazon and somehow I ended up looking at the reviews...woo boy. A lot of people really upset that a TV show is making the absurd suggestion that <checks notes> racism is bad.

yeah, the number of people writing 1-star reviews on imdb because they "don't think white supremacy is an issue in this country" is staggering.

also, the number of people who don't know about black wall street and/or the tulsa massacre (it was not a race riot, it was a fucking massacre) is fucking scary. US history in schools is severely lacking; no wonder history is on its way to repeating itself.

anyway, i love the show so far. i felt uncomfortable and anxious during almost the entire episode, which i think is exactly the point. i can't wait to see what happens next.

oh, and the music is fucking fantastic.

Aside from making better financial sense, and keeping the anticipation going for longer, it's also totally in keeping with the Watchmen aesthetic to get everything spooled out over a slow release that then later makes sense when you put it all together in retrospect.

The Twin Peaks soundtrack a few years ago did something like this and I thought that was a genius move. I hope it's something more shows do, just to keep interest up. I could see HBO doing it for the next season of Westworld, where the music has it's own thematic thrust through each season.

This is all speculation, of course, but as I mentioned earlier in the thread, I imagine this is likely because the artwork either hasn’t been finalized yet and is likely to change, or it may contain mild spoiler-ish imagery from later in the series.

from what it says in the description, the artwork both in and outside of the physical packages will contain spoilers and more detailed "world-building" information related to the series. i think it's the same reason they're not revealing track names. kraw confirmed he worked on the art for these releases and that more will be revealed later.

I feel the same about the Atlanta child murders as documented by the second season of Mindhunter. It seems like that should be one of the most famous killing sprees in history, and yet just like the Tulsa race riot, tragedies primarily involving people of color seem to be conveniently left out of the history books.

So I finally got around to watching this and woah.

Because of Trent & Atticus's involvement in this I was always at least cautiously interested, but I was not particularly confident about how the show itself would be. The original Watchmen (and Alan Moore's work in general) made a huge impression on me in my youth. It's terrific and I hate Zack Snyder's adaptation (and pretty much the entirety of the Slow-Mo-Bro's filmography). I know how the bearded one hates these kind of projects and considering how many of them turn out it's hard to blame him. After Snyder's version the waters for an actually-good, faithful adaptation are a bit muddied, so the loose-sequel direction piqued my interest. But Damon Lindelof's involvement kept my expectations low. I never really got into Lost, I despise Prometheus with all my Alien-fan heart (though Covenant reinforces that Ridley Scott was the biggest part of the problem), and I never saw The Leftovers. The initial details even had me thinking there was going to be some weird counter-intuitive Blue Lives Matter subtext so I was skeptical at the very least. Always awesome to be wrong in cases like this!

I'm already anticipating the next episode. Gripping shit. It honors the world of the comic while building an identity and direction that is unmistakably its own. Top notch cast and production values. And that score...

I knew they'd be bringing their A-game for a project this huge and, as fans of the comic and Lindelof, important to them. But anticipating is different then hearing and hearing was just fantastic. I want to build a wall of this music and sleep in it. And the sax is back too! Pre-ordered the records and I'm eagerly awaiting them. And I'm stoked that I'm looking forward to the show just as much.

no, i totally agree. in general, large events that have left many dead because of racism (or other horrible imbalanced thinking) tend to be covered up by the perpetrators and their progeny. christopher columbus is a fucking piece of shit and there's only a few states in the US that have finally switched over to celebrating Indigenous People's Day to make up for the years of celebrating a murderer/rapist/slave-trader.

anyway, apparently the tulsa massacre was almost successfully covered up until about 2003(?) so a lot of its details have only come to light in the last 15 years or so. that's why i think it was such a powerful way to open the series, and i'm glad it's gotten people talking about it. i don't think there's any shame in not knowing something as long as when one learns about its having happened, they do their best to learn more about it (when it's something important and impactful like this).

I couldn't agree more! While The Social Network score is still my favorite of theirs (with TGwtDT being a close second), I can see this surpassing it if these two tracks and what we heard in the first episode are any indication of the direction of the rest of the material. The first track during the credits was great, but the second track is INCREDIBLE. I'm so excited that there are 39 tracks worth of material for recorded for Watchmen and I cannot wait to dive into the first volume!

I'm expecting a digital download card with the records at least. Most of the releases from the Vinyl era nin.com, even Deviations, have included digital copies and it would be weird not to include it with (what is currently) the only way to buy the Watchmen soundtrack. It hasn't been specified though.

I felt a bit burned by Lost & Prometheus too. And many years ago he was writing a Hulk/Wolverine mini for Marvel. He got two out of the 6 issues out and then he just disappeared. The whole thing was cancelled. Finally he wrote them FOUR years later and they came out. But that put a bad taste in my mouth.

Second episode was fantastic & it's pretty great to see them continuing the expansion of the Watchmen mythos and exciting to see where it's going.

The music was perfectly fitting and this time around felt a little more aggressive and also somber and felt like a harkening back to the feel of The Social Network in its ambience.

I notice the files have been updated with those that reference the second episode (https://www.hbo.com/peteypedia). The second file (MEMO: Masked Vigilantes In Pop Culture (https://www.hbo.com/content/dam/hbodata/series/watchmen/peteypedia/02/masked-vigilantes-in-pop-culture-memo.pdf)) has references which seem like they may be to the new record, particularly "New on the radar is the re-release of The Book of Rorschach by Sons of Pale Horse, a short-lived space rock band of the nineties... The new edition is set to “drop,” to use the music industry parlance, on November 4". This might be a reference to some of the material which will be with it? Don't think this bit is spoilery:

I have obtained an advanced copy of the re-release, and I must say, it gave me cause for concern. The record contains an essay written by Seymour David. If you know the lore behind “Rorschach’s Journal,” then you know that David was the one who discovered it while working as an editorial assistant at New Frontiersman in the eighties. He exploited the small fame he gained from making this lucky find to launch a career as a scholar of post-modern culture and his work often overlaps with mine. I’ve met the man at many conferences, and let me tell you, he’s an embarrassment to our oft-maligned field of study, a selfimportant know-it-all who doesn’t know when to shut up. I am reluctant to use my CV as an offensive weapon, but I have a doctorate in History and this man knows nothing of it.
Alas, David has a following, which means his essay is going to receive some attention, and that brings me to my worry: his writing portrays the band as misunderstood misfits who made a “masterpiece” that deserves to be re-discovered and appreciated anew. And since the legends of Rorschach have inspired copycats over the decades — including those, like the 7K, who misappropriate him to some degree by projecting their own extremist ideologies onto him — we should consider the possibility that the re-release of The Book of Rorschach might further stoke renewed interest in him. Should I work up a more detailed threat assessment? Please advise.

More incredible work from Trent & Atticus last night. In particular the piece when Sister Night and the others are taking down Judd's body is absolutely beautiful, and the recurring themes are hypnotic. The score is such a powerfully felt presence in the show and it may stand up there with Trent and Atticus's strongest works. In my opinion they're likely to score an Emmy nomination at this point.

As per this week's Peteypedia files from HBO's website:

New on the radar is the re-release of The Book of Rorschach by Sons of Pale Horse, a short-lived spacerock band of the nineties named after the popular death metal group that perished on November 2 during the Dimensional Incursion Event. The new edition is set to “drop,” to use the music industry parlance,on November 4, which is to say, a couple days after the 24th anniversary of the D.I.E. It’s something of asquidsploitation exercise, though this might be the least of its offenses to good taste.

Wonder if the packaging for Volume 1 will tie into this?

I have so many questions... did Trent and Atticus just drop an obscure space rock album under the alias sons of pale horse or is it just the regular OST with a fancy packaging? Do the songs have lyrics?

I'll take some higher quality pics later and upload them I literally just got it in this morning from Amazon I had pre ordered it the second it was announced I haven't had a chance to play it yet but I will today at some point as no download card is included I'm going to RIP a copy for digital purposes off the vinyl so I can listen on any device I want.

Is that a picture of Sigur Ros used in that booklet, with the silhouettes of the three members on stage?? I swear that's Jonsi in the center and Orri on the drums.

God this packaging is fucking wonderful. I know that it's actually jut the soundtrack on the disc but part of me secretly wishes this shit were a new NIN album.

I did a reverse image search and I found a larger version (https://media.licdn.com/dms/image/C561BAQFUf0IW1ivqbA/company-background_10000/0?e=2159024400&v=beta&t=DGEZoj0JM_SyvjkzJjuDiAf4KU_3ka4MY4qYxgHSzIU) and Google has labeled it as "Giorgio Moroder 80s tour". However it's quite likely just a stock image used by kraw for the artwork

Oh man that is DEFINITELY (http://www.losanjealous.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/srh10.jpg) an image of Sigur Ros.

Pale Horse is a band from Watchmen's universe (https://watchmen.fandom.com/wiki/Pale_Horse).

One thing is puzzling me, though. According to nin.com, the first track was supposed to be "HOW THE WEST WAS REALLY WON". However, looking at the picture posted above, the first track is "american love (they don't make it anymore)" and the LP has 12 tracks instead of 15.

edit: I also realised that on amazon.com each LP has two release dates, and two different amazon identification numbers. Purely speculation, but what if there are 6 LPs in total, and not just 3?

I asked negavinyl and they said:

Yeah it’s the score work. Some dialogue from the show.

I guess no space rock album then :) Either way, we can't complain and I cannot wait to listen to it!

Amazon has mine listed as arriving November 13th. Yikes...

Same here. Just cancelled through Amazon and re-ordered through Target. If I'm going to have to wait an additional week for delivery, I'll do so and get the third vinyl free.

Hmm. I'm glad I went the Target route since there's no digital code included with the vinyl. I'll happily wait until the digital version is available & spin that on my stereo while examining the vinyl package.

*edit* That said, I blame the fine folks at Charlton Home Records because the album comes from the Watchmen universe instead of our own. Looks like someone registered "sonsofpalehorse.com on 9/4/2019 so... this could be fun!
