View Full Version : Waves - a dramatic musical movie (2019) (UPDATE: not a musical)

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross will be scoring Waves by Trey Edward Shults: https://www.indiewire.com/2018/07/waves-lucas-hedges-sterling-k-brown-trey-edward-shults-trent-reznor-1201980620/

Whoa. I actually liked It Comes At Night (which faced significant backlash because of "misleading" marketing) but this sounds completely different from that, or anything Trent and Atticus have scored before, and if this is true I have no idea what to expect. Exciting.

The really interesting part-it is a musical. So Reznor/Ross might have a bigger part in this than what they have scored in the past, even if "some iconic contemporary songs" are used. Considering that they have already signed on before some of the actors, it wouldn't surprise me if they have already composed some music for the film as part of pre-production preparations. Unusual for most films, but musicals are not most films.

This already sounds awesome. I can't wait to hear this.

The ETA would probably be late next year, right? Or even later, considering most of the cast hasn't been selected yet?

According the article above:

"Update (July 3): The original report stating Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will be scoring “Waves (https://www.indiewire.com/t/waves/)” is not confirmed yet. A producer on the project says a deal with the duo is not finalized."

Will probably happen but not "official" yet.

I will keep my mind open until I see something like a trailer, but of all of their score projects, this is the one I find least exciting. I'm just not usually too interesting in musicals, I guess. Speaking of musicals, I'd love to hear more about that Fight Club musical that Chuck Palahniuk was supposedly trying to talk Trent into doing.

No, 'Into The Wild' wasn't a musical; but I think of it as more than just a simple soundtrack... maybe its just me. On the other hand 'ATU' was a full out musical and I guess it's just hard for me to wrap my head around the idea of TR producing a musical...

Lead Male: "No! Not Me! It was not ever me! It was never me in that mirrorrrRRRrrRRrr!"
Lead Female: "Oh no! Oh no! The cracks have opened up! Can't run. Cant Run. Inside me he will be!"
Lead Male: "She's gone"

There are more serious musicals in existence. Les Mis is a good example, or Dancer in the Dark. Others include recent movies like La La Land and Sing Street. I could totally see a more serious musical along those lines.

I have a feeling Trent & Atticus may be providing score material only and not actually writing any of the songs.

Based on his responses at the Chicago record store interview done last year, Trent kinda sounded like he WOULD be willing to participate, i kinda got the impression that he's just waiting on others to green light the project and it moves along before he commits to it.

I've been thinking about this... "A Minute to Breathe" showed that they're capable of writing a song to fit a narrative subject. It would be very interesting to hear a whole storyline with other characters singing TR's lyrics.

The film debuts today at Telluride Festival, apparently.
TR & AR are still listed as composers on imdb despite not being confirmed as of last summer, and they are also mentioned in the festival's PDF program: http://telluridecms-production.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/guides/46th-TFF-program-guide-FINAL.pdf

Nice review in Variety (https://variety.com/2019/film/reviews/waves-review-2-1203319165/), shouting out TR&AR's contributions to stitching together the existing songs with score. And one in Indiewire (https://www.indiewire.com/2019/08/waves-review-trey-shults-kelvin-harrison-jr-1202169932/) too. The Hollywood Reporter calls our boys "master conjurors" (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/waves-review-1235090)!

Doesn't sound like a musical, after all. More "operatic" according to the latter review.

my friend Clint saw the film at CIFF recently and had this to say about the score:

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross‘ ambient score is most deeply felt in the anxiety-inducing noise of its first hour, but finds instances of grace as the film goes on.

looks very promising. That’s what part of the beauty of their music to me, the ability of being the right kind of noisy while being raw and human underneath

Saw this at the St. Louis International Film Festival, though I think it actually gets released next week.

First off, pretty good movie.

Despite the early reporting, the film is not a musical. It's is very music driven but it's more akin to something like American Graffiti or Dazed and Confused. Music is a constant presence. Trent and Atticus's score just kind of pinch hits in between tracks. For the most part their music comes into accentuate some of the most extreme emotional moments. They get to develop a few decent motifs but mostly their contributions are some short stingers. Good work on their part but nothing that would stand apart from the film like their Fincher work.

I don't know, maybe cringey, maybe not. Let's face it, the conversation was over once TR posted a reply. Either way, the kid is super happy and I think people should be happy/ supportive for him. So quick question for you, does anyone know what the official run times for each track are?

I feel like a few of the early tracks end...kinda abruptly, and i want to see if that was the intention or if my download fucked up. I quickly added up the tracks i have and the run time is 75:30 which is shy of the 77 NIN.com states but not by much...

Everything Burns (1:06)
Bad News (3:00)
I'm Disappearing (5:05)
Odds Against (5:16)
Holding It Together (2.37)
Feedbackloop (11:16)
After The Fire (3.56)

Forgetting (1:54)
How It Begin? (0:52)
Wounds Heal (22:31)

So quick question for you, does anyone know what the official run times for each track are?

I feel like a few of the early tracks end...kinda abruptly, and i want to see if that was the intention or if my download fucked up. I quickly added up the tracks i have and the run time is 75:30 which is shy of the 77 NIN.com states but not by much...

Everything Burns (1:06)
Bad News (3:00)
I'm Disappearing (5:05)
Odds Against (5:16)
Holding It Together (2.37)
Feedbackloop (11:16)
After The Fire (3.56)
Nobody Home (3:04)
The Light Shines Trough (10:24)
Forgetting (1:54)
How It Begin? (0:52)
Wounds Heal (22:31)
Ties (2:12)
Leaving Missouri (4:17)

I'm probably just being paranoid, but just wanna make sure :)

P.S This scores nice and DARK!

The abrupt ends are intentional.

Agreed. Also reading "non-spoiler" reviews of the film while listening and I'm honestly nervous to see it. The Ringer article paints it that it will emotionally wreck you and has some shocking scenes...i am way to fragile with movies like this lol . Not sure I will recover enough to be able to enjoy the score post-viewing (once I see it) if it truly his this intense as described without revisiting the images that correspond with it.

FYI, for anyone else who is dying to see Waves like me, it opens in wide release next Friday, Dec. 6th.

I love this writer/director's previous films (Krisha, It Comes At Night), so that coupled with Trenticus (not to mention the great reviews and Sterling K. Brown) has me salivating.

I'm reluctantly holding off on listening to the score (which of course isn't so bad with newest Watchmen volume recently released), but everyone's comments here have me VERY excited (and anxious!) to finally hear it.

Yeah, since I live in Los Angeles, there were 4 or 5 different Blade Runner themed events going on throughout the month. My girlfriend and I decided it would be fun to go as Roy and Pris for Halloween and then wear our costumes to the other events as well. Was just thinking this myself..

If you had told me in 1999 that in 20 years time, we'd have an alternate-universe NIN where Trent (and Atticus) were making epic film scores seemingly in their sleep that mirrored the grand artistic statements of TDS, The Fragile and Year Zero of their day job, I'd have laughed myself silly..

What other musician is releasing such radically different instrumental work in the vein of Vietnam War, Watchmen, Bird Box and Waves in as little as two years' time. I haven't felt this way since discovering Aphex Twin's stuff in '95-'96..

Waves is now available on Spotify and Apple Music.

I REALLY hope this OST will eventually get a physical release. To me this is by far the most obscure and unsettling soundtrack they've put out so far. I love the fact that it is so different from their previous works and every track is almost timeless, ephemeral and meticulously stretched. I've been listening to it since it came out and a few days ago I had to take a break because it's some really dark and emotionally dense stuff, to the point that it was starting to make me uncomfortable.

Can't wait to see the film.

Saw the film last night. Really intense emotional experience that you should see in a theater if you can.

As mentioned previously, it's a very music heavy movie, but the score definitely takes a backseat to the use of pre-existing music. I definitely wouldn't expect an 80 minute long score if I had seen the movie first.

I do kind of wonder if it'll get one - it feels like a little bit more care was put into this release, what with the individual track art (haven't seen that in a long time) and the wider digital release so quickly after the initial release. The description for it is a lot more glowing than, say, mid90s, which got the same digital-only treatment, too, which makes me think that they liked it a lot and might have bigger plans for it.

Also the fact that this and mid90s are the only Null releases that don't have either a physical release or a hint at one (Patriots Day).

Agreed. The theater sound mix pummels you in the best way – in a way that home-viewing probably won't recreate in most cases.

I'm still so impressed by the way the Pop Songs were sewn into the Sound Design were sewn into the Score, etc.

I can't help but think Waves is the full realization of what Harmony Korine was trying to do with Spring Breakers (and I say that as a huge fan of that film): seamless integration of all the above elements to create something that obviously transcends music video and simply pushes the motion picture medium forward. It's just bursting with feeling.

There's a scene in the movie where one of the score drones slowly crackles into a different song (I think a Frank Ocean song, but I can't remember), but it only crackles to life in the right speaker. Then the next scene comes into focus, and the camera is pointing out the side window of a moving car. As it slowly rotates to look in the direction the car is moving in, the song pans around the theater until it's centered. It's wild, and definitely suited for theaters.

huh. ios13 has been doing that with a ton of audio files lately so I figured it was just another bug in the system.

side note: it's really pissing me off because I listen to podcasts and when I skip 15/30 seconds the system has no idea what to do because ios reports one time while the app reports another and it just goes black until the two times coincide again.

I've really grown accustomed and dove into this soundtrack. Now I think it's one of their best, entirely separately from the film. It doesn't overstays, the subtleties, faint chord changes and long evolving and transforming drones and samples are enough to form a whole, continuous and deep picture.

But I know they got more into them, they can do even better. There are still layers and layers of experiments besides the composition, they're always searching and digging. Unfortunately it's not used to its full potential in the film.

This is currently a major problem with some of their soundtracks, T&A bring a LOT of themselves, they build their own world, and maybe only with Fincher they achieve a kind of complete symbiosis. Music in film is always submitted to the whole piece of art, and it's difficult for both to evolve together and form a perfect union. So on one hand maybe T&A come from a place, music for music itself, that won't necessarily fit with the film, maybe filmmakers asking for their help don't use them at their full potential. Maybe everyone just does their best and the result is the best that could be.

But at least, they do create the best fully-fledged soundtrack they fucking can, and feed from the film to form a soundtrack that stands, alone, as art.

Saw this two days ago. Really enjoyed it (maybe the wrong word considering what a gut punch the movie is). Which is funny, b/c the trailer does NOTHING for this movie and initially i had no interest. Then i saw that Trent was attached & the good reviews it was getting and I then changed my mind. There are some excellent performances here. Everyone in the family shines at some point. Sterling K. Brown is excellent as always. And the technique @zecho (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=1086) refers to is done several times in the movie with varying degrees of the music swirling around the theater like the camera is. I think it's really cool to see our boys score intermixed with a song selection otherwise steeped heavily in modern hip hop. Frank Ocean, Sza, Solange, A$AP, Lil Wayne are some that I caught. And the movie's use of Kanye's "I Am A God" is some scary shit.

I really think that their music was brilliantly interwoven with the stuff from existing tracks (the Radiohead one particularly felt more lush in the theatre, amid the drones and beats, than it did stuck at the end of Radiohead's last LP stuffed with orchestration). I don't agree that their world-building isn't used to its full potential, here; there was plenty of their original music mixed in amidst all the other information coming at you, just enough to keep it all glued together. Sure, they didn't use all 22 minutes of "Wounds Heal" but I'm glad we got to hear the whole thing in its unedited glory on the soundtrack album.

You know, I saw so many comments saying that the didn't even notice the score when they saw the movie that I was expecting it to barely be used. Then I saw the movie and it was almost constant through the whole movie. Maybe the movie's just so intense that the you remember the visuals more than the sounds by the end, but I felt like the music was excellently used throughout this movie, specifically how it transitioned to the other artist's songs throughout the movie.

No idea really! It was and is my favorite movie of 2019. I think it got horribly snubbed. Kelvin Harrison, Jr. (Tyler) in particular blew me away, but he at least got an Indie Spirit Award nomination.

it feels so hermetic, you enter it’s world or you get left out, there are no breathers. It almost negates the film, cause the world of the film is open and full of music, this is otherworldly and closed off.
