This thread is similar to what we did in 2013 with the Tension tour to post setlist spoilers, videos, and reactions to any new songs that get played tonight and going forward. PLEASE use this thread to post your reactions and STAY THE HELL OUT of the tour journal unless you actually attended the show.

This will be fun! I'll open the thread up once we know the show has started.

I should have kept my whore mouth shut earlier with my "meh" comment. Some solid obscure gems in there, and just a general stirring up of the setlist flow in general. If we see some real diversity in the rest of the Vegas sets, it's safe to say we'll see the same at the US non-festival gigs in the fall (b/c of the similar "multi-night stand in one city" vibe), and hopefully the European/Asian non-festival gigs this summer as well.

The cynic in me expects this to be the first and last of the mixed up rarities setlists, but let's hope that's not the case. Either way, lucky old LV.
Personally there's a couple of tracks there that I'd be happy to miss, but on the whole the killer / filler meter is very much in the red. Kind of surprised by the lack of new songs though, but surely they'll turn up as we go along.

Thinking practically about this - we have a tried and tested band, no fancy light shows, and multiple shows in each city coming up - perhaps there's no reason why the whole tour might not be along the same lines. Fingers crossed!

Was there. Can confirm it opened with a mashup of pinion and Eater of Dreams overlayed. I overheard the bar staff saying the show would start at 9:15. It did. But it ended at 10:55. Its the shortest of all 13 NIN shows I've attended over the years. And there was no encore, no Hurt and no unheard new music. The set list, but I'm sure you're aware:

1 metal
2 me too
3 beginning of the end
4 survivalism
5 March of the Pigs
6 lovers
7 find my way
8 burn
9 god break down the door
10 letting you
11 gave up
12 even deeper
13 i do not want this
14 I'm afraid of Americans
15 less than
16 came back haunted
17 only
18 wish
19 head like a hole

As a long time NIN nerd, this set list delighted me. Eight of the songs I'd never heard live before. Trent said something to the effect that they were playing whatever the fuck they wanted. Rad.

Listening to the songs live, I couldn't help but notice most were about corrupt authority. You know, Trump. Seemed very apres pos. But, here's my gripe:

It was short. Very quick. I even felt some songs were cut short. And there was no encore or new unheard songs. I even consoled some first timers with the fact that they always play an encore; that hurt was coming, but, it never came despite the crowd lingering for 15 minutes or so.

According to Reddit, Trent said during the show he read online that the fans wanted some deep cuts after Burn then after Came Back Haunted he said "Forgot about that one huh?" I hope he opens the next show with Hurt and says "Haven't done that one in awhile."

In all seriousness, I think a Hurt opener would be pretty damn interesting.

The three songs that have been played at every NIN show I've been to are wish, march of the pigs, and hurt, and one of them was missing tonight

I'll bet these Vegas shows are a real mix of tracks. The real surprise would be festival sets with high variation in the setlist.
Then I'll bet the variety continues for CBI tour; c'mon, no way they won't mix it up for themselves during a six-night run in Los Angeles.
Here's hoping for a version of "Sin."

I liked it more than all of the ones last year (outside of Webster Hall, tough to beat Somewhat Damaged as the opener.) However, the Euro 2014 sets were really dope too.

edit: Also, I could do without Only. Would honestly rather have THTF or Closer.

Nope. I just thought it would be funny if people started singing it that way since he mumbles the line after saying it in Branches/Bones.

The 2013 thread was called the Tension Tugfest and it was easier back then because there was one overarching tour instead of, like, three. Figured this would be a catch-all.

And exactly one from The Fragile, and a bit of a snoozer in Even Deeper. They played it during Tension.

There were some cool somgs played (Metal, IDNWT) but a bit heavy on the YZ/TS/HM. Not a fan of any of the Bowie related stuff either.

People have complained for years that sets have vecome predictable so last night should make a lot of people happy, that was a totally unexpected crazy night. It felt like they’re taking advantage of having minimal visuals and letting the sets be whatever the fuck they want to play and it’s amazing. Giving a lot of the staples a break is always wonderful because it makes them feel special again when they come back; even just having the pacing of the set messed with makes them more exciting because there’s no feeling of being cued to leave. This band is really on another level and the intensity of last year hasn’t been lost in the downtime at all.

Right. I don't know what to call this tour? Is it still Wake up? Is Cold and Black& Infinite in the fall or is this part of that ... help!!!!!!!!!!!

Going strictly by the listed dates for the "Cold and Black and Infinite" tour, that leg doesn't start until the September 13th date in Phoenix, AZ, when JAMC joins as the opener/co-headliner. So, I don't know that there was an official name for the dates prior to the September dates. The metallic litho I saw someone post just listed the venue and date, as well, with no official tour title. Maybe these might be considered warm-up dates, like the handful they did back in 2005?

And exactly one from The Fragile, and a bit of a snoozer in Even Deeper. They played it during Tension.

There were some cool somgs played (Metal, IDNWT) but a bit heavy on the YZ/TS/HM. Not a fan of any of the Bowie related stuff either.

I wasnt there though, so hope the people that were legit liked it.

i despise when bands open with covers, so ridiculous. tool comes to mind, they play 10 song sets and open with a 12 min cover of no quarter.

way too heavy on YZ, came back haunted and only need to fucking disappear....im starting to worry that we're approaching a time when only the last few albums will get heavy play and PHM-TF will be an afterthought.

It's kind of interesting this expectation by some for older material only. Seems to be a common theme with fans of artists who have longevity. My example of one such person is Gary Numan who incidentally is appearing with NIN in Montreux this summer (July 9 2018).

A lot of his evidently older fanbase are at gigs and only want to hear stuff from his first three 1980's albums, but he's a creative guy and has 21 studio albums, most of which his fanbase appear to be under appreciative of. However he panders to them by playing lots of new stuff with a few older 1980's 'hit' tracks (including 'Metal' incidentally). You can tell by their reaction that they are not into his newer ones as much (which are more industrial) and prefer the older hits. I tend to be the entire opposite, I much prefer his heavier/industrial more recent material. To me the older stuff can have a tendancy to make him appear like an 80's tribute band a bit, the newer stuff makes him feel like a creative current artist (which he very much still is).

Because of the fan demand for older stuff he toured in 2016 solely with material from his first three albums, but he stated at the gig I was at that “this was the last time” and “he couldn't keep doing this”, and he “wanted to focus on his newer material”. Which I fully understand.

Just wanted to give you all an idea why it's important for an artist with longevity to feel creative/current and have fans appreciate them for what they are producing now and not just demand tracks from the first two albums. Artists evolve and we need to appreciate that they do otherwise they will move away from being that creative before they become just a tribute band of their former selves.

I am all for Trent playing whatever he wants to play at shows. Whether you like the set list or not, it’s going to be a better show because he is going to enjoy it more. Last night was a perfect example.

I became a Bowie fan (as opposed to a casual fan) from going to the outside tour and hearing a setlist of music I mostly never heard before (it was a few days before outside was even released and half the set was from that and the other half was mostly deep cuts with only under pressure and man who sold the world as "hits" - and one of those is a queen song). So yeah keep playing what you want, Trent. It comes through and some of us appreciate it.

Personally I'm of the mind the artist should do what they find makes them happy. Most people will like it too and naturally some others won't. We all know you can't please 100% of a grouping 100% of the time. :-) Otherwise who would post here? :-D

Yeah, I think with only having one show in so far ... there's no way to know exactly how this is going to go. I seriously doubt he'll be ignoring material from PHM - Fragile entirely especially since he also just helped in putting out definitive versions of a lot of those on vinyl recently. I'm sure we'll see more songs pop up in tonight and tomorrow's set list.

Either way, I also am of the opinion that the artist should play what he wants ... I'd much rather hear newer material from Nine Inch Nails live than the same stuff I'm expecting. The only thing that would have even slightly bugged me about that first show was just how Year Zero heavy it was since that's my least favorite NIN record. However, Metal is one of my favorite Nine Inch Nails covers so the whiplash of opening from that to those Year Zero songs would've been crazy to experience live, haha.

Speaking of covers, all of NIN's covers that usually end up in their set ... I adore! Americans, Suck, Physical, Dead Souls, etc. I'm more than okay for them to throw in those. The only thing that I didn't particularly care for last year was covering How to Destroy Angels material.

All in all, this is all just speculation at this point ... I'm just excited to see what tonight and tomorrow brings us. This is always one of the best times to be a Nine Inch Nails fan.

At that point I made it through the line on my phone and just bought them there. Thanks botley, if it hadn't been for you, I would still be waiting / trying to figure out what was going on.

I did troubleshoot the problem though: But because ticketmaster is basically just a scam, there are 239 cookies being set, most of them are 3rd party cookies. I block 3rd party cookies, as should everyone. I had the foresight to disable adblock, but I didn't consider that ticketmaster would have scammy cookies practices.
I'm not surprised at all that tickermaster's programmers aren't smart enough to check whether the required cookies are being set and inform the user.

After checking out on my phone, I unblocked all cookies in chrome and refreshed the page: it went through without a problem.

Fuck ticketmaster, and fuck physical presales.

My heart jumped when I saw The Frail into The Wretched, lol. That's a hell of a tease, though.

I just realized how rude it is that that was followed up by Terrible Lie, lmao.

Radiohead did it a couple years ago and really teased it because it was 5 songs in order off their latest album.

Holy shit this setlist excites me even more than the Wednesday show. Somewhat Damaged opening! The Big Come Down! I'm Afraid of Americans! Ahead of Ourselves! Parasite! Joy Division! What other surprises will there be?

Yeah, this setlist is nuts.

If they just rotate these 3 setlists for the rest of the summer/festival tour I won't be complaining.

A - Deep Cuts Fuck Encores
B - 2017
C - The Fragile Tease

nah, there's a reason the encore was missing on day 1. Based on the setlist and the reports from people there with uncertainty of the show was over or not, I think they planned one but for whatever reason, it didn't happen

There was no encore on the set list.

Also trent joked about it on Friday night. I think it was intentionally designed to be a more straightforward, nonstop, take no prisoners kinda show.

Gary did not join Trent on 'reptile'. Just on 'metal'. And it was incredibly adorable watching them work together on keys. Then there was hugging and I half-sobbed cuz when will they work together on something again????

Not that I didn’t enjoy Friday night’s show, but I kinda sorta definitely feel a little tiny bit like a chump for not going to tonight’s show when I see this set list. We bought the tickets and planned travel when the 13th and 15th were the only shows. Trying not to feel salty because I’ll never not love a NIN show, but GOD DAMN tonight’s set list.

Fuck!

That setlist is very exciting. I had an opportunity to go to one of the Vegas show, and am disappointed I didn't take it.

I'll make sure to go to one of the December ones in la, hopefully the opportunity presents itself.

These set lists are so different. Each night offered something cool.

Because Night Two was essentially the same as Riot Fest so I had already seen it (and I think it might be my favorite set list I’ve seen live), I’d have to say Night Three is my favorite among the three. AoO sounds like a fucking killer!

06-17-2018, 08:00 AM
Come on, Night Two was just vanilla NIN, fucking awesome but still the regular NIN show you could catch any given day. Nights one and three are there real fucking dope shit. #3 Set-List is simply incredible, the first thing I did when I woke up was search for it and I almost couldn't believe in what I was seeing because it's a near perfect setlist. If only Trent could start really dropping Hurt and favoring something like Right Where it Belongs to close out... but that's just me being too picky, I guess.

Damn, I only hope that everyone saying this is a farewell tour (at least for a long time) is so wrong

Holy fucking shit. Ahead of Ourselves sounds insane live and I cannot wait to hear a proper version of this track.

That chorus is intense ... it has the potential to be one of my favorite NIN songs of all time.

Out of curiosity, what didn't you like in particular about it? I actually thought it was a pretty good cover as a whole.

The vocals; I just thought the singing wasn't good. Which is odd as Atmosphere and Dead Souls are spot on.

First, I’m so happy for everyone who got to experience this amazingness.

But as someone who experienced night 1 and 2, then had to head back home and watch the set list unfold over Twitter, I am filled with jealousy. Still feel incredibly grateful for two fantastic shows this past week, but I’d probably trade both nights to witness this one. I look forward to listening to audio when it surfaces.
