Hey! Let's discuss PJ Harvey.

I can't express my love for this womans music in words. Everything, from her earlier grunge/blues-sounding stuff to the more mellow, folk-influenced music on Let England Shake, is absolutely stunning.

Seems like Let England Shake will be released along with a DVD containing the videos for the songs.

I love Is This Desire? and wish there was more of her stuff in that vein. That album is nigh-on perfect IMHO. Aside from that album, the early grunge-y stuff (esp. the Peel Session versions OMFG) and (oddly enough) White Chalk works for me.

I love just about everything she did from Dry through Uh Huh Her. I guess I'm probably alone on this, but I just can't get into her more recent material. I'm glad that she wanted to grow and change and push herself in new directions, but I just don't like the little girl voice and the offbeat instruments that have been used on the last couple of albums.

Good to see a dvd release from the videos that were made for each song from Let England Shake. I think the ones I usually gravitate more are Rid of Me, Is This Desire?, and Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. I like all her albums, even her b-sides and appreciate how she changes on each album. I was very glad she won the Mercury Prize this year.

Rid of Me and To Bring You My Love is where it's at!

Her collaboration on Desert Sessions Vol. 9 was good too.

i pretty much love her entire catalog, outside of uh huh her and the john parish records. those three have a few gems on them, but don't click for me. the earlier records, stories from the city and white chalk are my favorites.

I have been a fan of PJ since her first album. I still think to this day that she is one of the most original and worthy female artists making music.
Not just a national treasure, but a treasure full stop.

Only really heard her Rid Of Me album, which is pretty nifty. She really gained my attention with the stuff she did with Nick Cave (Henry Lee, etc.), or the songs he wrote about her (green eyes, black hair, etc.).

IMO White Chalk is an acquired taste. Let England Shake is a little more accessible, within a few listens I was whistling along to the tunes no problem. Give it a bash.....listening that is, not whistling.

My favourites are To Bring You My Love and Stories From the City, but aside from a couple of songs on uh uh her I pretty much love all her stuff. She's got Patti Smith's punk, but at the same time she seems to have an almost Kate Bush-like need to experiment and expand her horizons, and I love that about her.

I thought Let England Shake was absolutely brilliant. It's probably her best album in terms of how well-crafted and well-concieved it is.

That's probably a fairly accurate assessment of those albums, generally speaking. But in my experience it was just the opposite. White Chalk clicked w/me from pretty much the first listen, while LES has yet to grow on me, but in all fairness I need to give it another listen or two. I think one of the reasons WC doesn't scream accessible is not so much because she changed her style dramatically, but because the songs are just so goddamn depressing, bleak & difficult to get through as well the lyrics are brutally, unflinchingly personal & honest, which can make for a very discomfiting listening experience.

As for an overall favorite, yeah, it's hard to beat Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea.

Let England Shake is pretty good. I was kind of scratching my head at all the acclaim it garnered this past year (#1 album of 2011 by I believe 13 music publications) but now that I've listened a few times through it's growing on me. The Words That Maketh Murder is really great, been listening on repeat for the past few days.

Anyone recommend a next album for me to listen to? I'm thinking Stories From The City because it was the last of her records to win the Mercury Prize, as England did this year.

^^ Stories..... is a great album and it is chock full of tasty little nuggets for one to sing along to.

If you want to play it safe, get Stories, if you fancy a bit of a swerve, get 4 track demos, it's glorious and beautifully sparse.

Just listened to "Down By The Water" and couldn't help but draw comparisons to bits of The Fragile, specifically "I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally". Of course, PJ's song came first. The titles also fit together well ("I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally, Down By The Water")

saw her in...2004? (yes, just looked up the show (http://www.setlist.fm/search?query=artist:%28PJ+Harvey%29+tour:%28Uh+Huh +Her%29&venue=1bd4652c)) and she was AMAZING. rob ellis on drums, josh klinghoffer on guitar (and, on a couple songs, second drum kit), can't remember who played bass. pj had made her own animal the muppet purse to hold her IEM pack and i think she was wearing a shirt-dress with her own picture on it. she and the guys all looked like they were having so much fun, and i was with my best friend/sister for whom PJ has always been a mutual love.

haven't been big on anything she's done since Uh Huh Her but i'm sure she still puts on a great show.

the 2003/2004 shows were pretty damn good indeed. Her short tour with john parish in 2009 wasn't bad either. I liked LES but I am not a big fan of the last album and I won't be in the country during that time so i guess i will miss these, oh well.

So jealous. I was supposed to see her on that tour and she canceled. Never got another chance after that and like yourself, I have little interest in her post-2004 output. I have the DVD from that tour, though, and I can tell that those shows were pretty badass.

regardless of how you feel about the latest record(s), her show is still AMAZING. it's a ten piece band this time around, plenty of instrument switching, trumpets, military snares, very much appropriate with all the political turmoil happening across the globe. also, i'm glad to see mick harvey on board (he's been with her for years now, even before leaving the bad seeds).

as for the LES and the latest, neither record grabbed me on first listen, but are the epitome of "growers"- each listen starts to hook into you a little deeper. it's been that way for a lot of her albums for me- the only one i loved instantly was white chalk - even listening to rid of me and to bring you my love in high school took a few listens to really sink in.

that sounds like a pretty great live setup. funny story, when i got "stories from the city..." (which is how i got into PJ) i thought mick harvey was either her brother or her husband or something, because i had never heard the bad seeds at the time and had no idea about his musical history. i just assumed the shared last name meant they were related haha.

also, white chalk is the only album of hers i actually DISLIKE. i think if she had put it out under a different name or...idunno, it just doesn't feel like PJ to me.

I wish she would've brought her White Chalk show here, I fucking LOVED THAT ALBUM, one of my Top Five concept albums of all time, really wanted to see that.

The lyrics (and the atmosphere) totally drive that album, for sure. It's set up as if it was recorded over 100 years ago.

So fucking pissed about missing her show at a festival this year...
She played on the first day fairly early, like 15PM-ish, we arrived at the entry point about 2hrs before her start, and managed to spend 4 goddamn hours at the queue to exchange tickets for wristbands. Later on the organizers apologized for this fuckup, admitting they didn't assign enough people to handle the exchange.

http://pjharvey.net/vinyl-reissues-demo-albums-announced/

Long overdue, PJ Harvey's complete discography (along with separate demo releases for each album, on CD/vinyl/download formats) will be getting vinyl reissues throughout the next year. Dry is first up July 24th, and has been remastered by Head.

This is notable for A) her back catalogue desperately needing to be remastered for quite some time now, and B) vinyl copies of most of her albums go for quite a bit of money.

lol jk, but yeah seemingly only the Demo releases will be additionally on CD and digital download; the vinyl reissues look to be exclusive to that format. I have to wonder if they'll do a proper Rid of Me album demo or just use 4-Track Demos. She's getting all my money regardless haha

These will come with download cards, and they're stopping short of calling them "remastered" but that Steve Albini and John Parish will be involved with the transfer process for each, respectively.

Much. I was spinning some Daysleepers stuff in between it and the Demos, and didn't have to turn the volume up compared to that or what I would normally have it for other records. Based on this, I'm super looking forward to Rid of Me next month.

I could dig out my USB turntable and try to rip this, but I'm far too lazy for that. I feel like someone else could probably do a much better conversion job, if they haven't already. I don't even know the sites to frequent anymore. This is absolutely the version of the album that I want on my iPod.

I'm pretty sure I saw digital codes being advertised for Rid of Me and TBYML. But PJ's site (https://pjharvey.kontraband.store/products/dry-lp-reissue) also said Dry would have one. I don't know if it's just the copies sold from her site. That would be asinine.

*edit - Amazon has an "auto rip" feature for vinyl purchasers, but I'm like 99.9999% sure this is just their standard digital copy of the album.

Edit2: I just reached out to Kontraband/PJ's official store to see if they can assist. I'm guessing they'll tell me to fuck off, but who knows.

Edit3: That was fast. Yes, they did tell me to do just that basically.

Well I mean, I didn't even order from them so I wasn't really expecting them to be accommodating. Seems like US copies don't have download codes, but UK/Europe does. Hoping this will be corrected going forward. If anyone has the means of getting/sharing the Dry download, that would be most appreciated!

Well I mean, I didn't even order from them so I wasn't really expecting them to be accommodating. Seems like US copies don't have download codes, but UK/Europe does. Hoping this will be corrected going forward. If anyone has the means of getting/sharing the Dry download, that would be most appreciated!

*edit - seems as though the digital download supplied with the UK/European edition is indeed the old release of the album. What a mess. I guess it's just gonna rely on someone making a vinyl rip. :(

jesus christ this whole thing is stupid

listened to Dry yesterday and it sounded pretty good. a bit of high-end distortion, especially on the esses, but nothing i couldn't tolerate.

but yeah, definitely pissed about a lack of download code. i forgot that my digital copy isn't even really listenable because i didn't encode it until like 2005, and i had lent my CD copy to a friend who returned it to me scratched, which i didn't know until i tried to listen to my rip and there were skips all over the place (mostly in "happy and bleeding" which is of course my favorite)

and today i'm listening to Rid Of Me. sounds fantastic. nice mastering job that brings the levels up a bit without losing seemingly any of the grand dynamics. also still has the wonderful hard-panned separations that always made the original version so fun to listen to on headphones. there really isn't anyone else like steve albini in the world of music.

surprisingly...this version came with a download code that gave me WAVs, so lemme know if you need them!

i also corresponded with a very helpful gentleman from the customer support team via pj's website who felt really bad about me not getting a download code for Dry, but said he has no access to get me one, and that the american distributor for the records isn't offering DLs with them...which makes it even weirder that i got one with Rid Of Me. so my question is...did amazon (from whom i reluctantly ordered it) get one of the EU-distributed copies and not a US-distributed copy? so strange.

My copies from Amazon just came in today and they are both made in Europe and have download cards (or at least the stickers on the front make that claim). Discogs is listing these all under a blanket US/UK/Europe edition, as opposed to Dry which has a separate US listing. Hopefully this is the way they'll release these going forward!

Is the Rid of Me download code for the 2020 remaster though? Apparently the Dry one was not :(

i haven't listened to the DL yet to compare, so i'll get back to you!

currently re-listening to my covers EP from april, though, and i'm still insanely proud of the version of Teclo that i pulled off (with the help of my friend nina/derosnec).

I finally gave the Rid of Me/demos a spin and was pretty impressed with the crunchiness of the former and the rawness of the latter. Not entirely sure these are "remastered" at least in terms of volume boosting; I had to crank up my receiver considerably for Rid of Me, and the download copy seems the same way. Unfortunately, my Demos download doesn't work. I just opened up a ticket. It was a brand new vinyl from Amazon!

I don’t know about you guys but I can’t wait to get my hands on the desire demos, very curious to see if these will be stripped down acoustic or not.

i don't see no preorder, we still have louse point coming out before this one, the release date is not yet listed on her website, probably november since it's been one reissue each month so far

Amazon is saying Dance Hall now has a release date of Nov 13, so I'm wondering if something happened to push the rest of these back? I'm definitely most excited for the Desire and Stories demos going forward (not to mention affordable vinyl copies of both of those proper albums!)

The TBYML demos might be the best thing she's ever released. This woman is a fucking artist. Other than the programmed drums and considerably more lo-fi production, these songs are all pretty similar to the final product (especially Down by the Water). I think there's a missing guitar line in Working for the Man, but pretty much all the other elements are there throughout the album (Teclo is fucking amazing). This is making me thirst even more for the Is This Desire demos!

I feel like I've heard this Dancer demo before, too. Maybe from back in the Napster days?

I really, really, really, really, really regret not going to the Detroit show that tour. I even had a ticket, just not enough money to get gas to drive there :(
Probably my favorite era from her, aesthetically, musically, live band etc.

Excited for these reissues to fill in the big gaps in my PJ vinyl collection. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to nab signed copies on the web store as they went on sale. Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea is melodic perfection.

just pre-ordered my copy today! that's the album that got me into her (and then i worked my way back through her discography). i was familiar with the songs "rid of me" & "hardly wait" because of Strange Days but "stories..." is how i actually became a pj fan. i still have a promo photo of her from rolling stone taped up on the wall at my parents' house.

Uh Huh Her: April 30. Signed art print version likely going live in the next 12 hours or so if you feel like spamming her site lol

*edit - Amazon is taking pre-orders, but it's still not on her official site. First time this has happened, odd.

listened to "stories from the city..." on vinyl this afternoon. definitely a few small sound issues but overall it was fine. it's the album that got me into her and it's weird to revisit it for the first time in a while and realize that, of all her albums that i like ("dry" up through "uh huh her") it's definitely the weakest, lyrically. i'm not a huge fan of "i'm in this city and i'm going to talk about it" lyrics and there are a LOT of those. but musically it's fantastic, and her voice is amazing, and the duets with thom yorke are gorgeous.

Amazon UK jumped the gun and listed it yesterday, and her site's been pretty reliably selling these things on Thursdays. Glad it worked out! :)

I understand that take on the lyrics. I see the lyrics as being intentional in their simplicity and directness. Setting the scene for a pure, joyous tone in the delivery. Professing a new love in a direct way, whether it be for a person, city, or feeling of rebirth. The excitement of that new feeling that makes you want to shout it out instead of being coy with words. Definitely a bubblier version of PJ.

i still love everything up through Uh Huh Her but everything after that (save for the CONCEPT of white chalk and a couple of the songs) have done nothing for me. i can't connect to any of it emotionally, and that's a fucking bummer.

First impression of the new album is it's very good. Gonna have to give it a few more listens before ranking it with her others, but this one definitely feels stronger upon a single listen than the last one did. I need to re-listen to that one one of these days too.

Yeah, i hear you. I can't say I relisten to them with any enthusiasm, also I find the production is muddy on the post-White Chalk albums. Strangely, I did enjoy the demo versions of LES and HOPE6 just fine.
