Music born out of the science fiction subgenre of the same name. Musical themes that accompany a technologically advanced yet dystopian future. Typically represents feelings of isolation, uncertainty and paranoia.

Cyberpunk's rise in pop-culture began as early as the 1950s and 60s with authors such as Aldous Huxley, Jack Vance, Rudy Rucker, Phillip K. Dick and Roger Zelazny. It can be traced back to the science fiction boom in the motion picture industry by directors such as Stanley Kubrick to Ridley Scott. Musically, the cyberpunk genre is attached to the technological advancements in electronic silicon boards and processors, giving rise to synthetic sounds, layers, artificial loops, beats and machine effects of the same era. This music has its early roots in the futuristic sounds of space rock and psychedelia of the late 1960s and 1970s, but its solidification as a real genre came out of the ashes of the late 70s punk culture, and can be attached to the leitmotifs and styles of the post-punk era. The music grew to become synonymous with the 1980s, and grew in popularity with the release of the film, "Blade Runner" as well as many more cyberpunk cult classics of that decade. Transitioning into the 1990s, the genre came to be incorporated into other major genres such as industrial, D'n'B, IDM, and drone.

On its own, cyberpunk seems to be making a resurgence, even if still remaining considerably 'underground'. The recent interest may stem from the current global political environment and may be seen in the increase in literature, graphic novels, movies and music over the past few years. "Blade Runner 2049" is also fresh in memory with Hans Zimmer's amazing futuristic ode to the original 1982 Vangelis masterpiece. We also have the massive Cyberpunk2077 Action-Adventure RPG coming in the next year or two from CDPR (http://www.cyberpunk.net). Rumors exist that one of the new stars of the genre will be contributing music to this project. Hopefully that comes to fruition. Speaking of.. Here is one of my favorite cyberpunk albums in recent years. Enjoy!

Didn't we already have a synthwave type thread at one point?

Either way... r/outrun is a great resource.
