The Knife is Olof Dreijer (Oni Aynun, DJ Coolof) and Karin Dreijer Andersson (Honey Is Cool, Fever Ray). They are based in Stockholm, Sweden and have made music together since 1999, released on their own label Rabid Records.

i'm not a devoted fan of all of their material, but they've got some pretty undeniable tracks. 'heartbeats' fills my heart with joy and 'girl's night out' has that kind of tension i'm usually looking for in my synth music.

Can't wait for the supposed new album that they're apparently working on....remember reading something about them releasing it in 2012?

carpenoctem

Yep, it's on their blog (http://theknife.net/take-action-for-the-housing-rights-of-roma-in-rome). "The Knife is now recording a new album to be released in 2012." That was posted back in April.

We have literally nothing to go on at this point except an official announcement, but that's enough for me. I imagine they'll be pretty secretive about it right up until its release. I don't know what to expect, but I think it will be different than Silent Shout.

Is it weird that I prefer the Fever Ray album to The Knife? I just connected with it much more for some reason.

carpenoctem

Not weird, it just means you prefer Karin alone over Karin and Olof. And she is quite the beast.

I downloaded Tomorrow, In A Year and I'm finally going to give it an honest try, if only because there's still nothing solid on when the new Knife album will be released.

Ooh pretty.

I've been listening to Deep Cuts a lot lately and it's really good, better than I used to think. The only thing that hinders it from being great is the genre-hopping - Silent Shout had a great consistent vibe and Deep Cuts is scattered by comparison.

I havent seen this news anywhere else, but it seems legit. Bullet has done press stuff for both Planningtorock and iamamiwhoami so The Knife would be right up their alley.

bullettmedia (http://bullettmedia.tumblr.com/post/21649288056/bulletts-been-told-that-the-highly-anticipated):

BULLETT’s been told that the highly anticipated album from The Knife is projected to come out this September! And that the duo are collaborating on a track with a certain buzz band. It’s been 6 years and it sounds like it’ll be worth the wait!

I read a review that suggested fever ray's debut was the product of post natal insomnia. Not sure if true but i couldn't get the idea out of my head on relistening and it fits. We might have to wait until Karen has another child...

post natal insomnia/depression was a big influence on the fever ray album

Karin has said that if another solo project were to be released it probably wouldnt be fever ray because it was its own thing and that a new project would be under a different name.

also, you can preview the new single here http://www.amazon.com/Full-of-Fire/dp/B00B2WWQZW/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1358872234&sr=1-1&keywords=the+knife+full+of+fire

I listened to the previews and it sounds horrible. Too much like the music they did for the opera. I love the new single and I thought the album would be dance-y and dark. But from what I heard it sounds just dark and a pain in the ass to listen to. Too much weird sounds and no melody. I am a huge The Knife fan but this is just disappointing. The same goes for the new video... what was that? I hope they make it up for me on the concert in Munich.

I have to agree with this. The video was pointless and boring. The single has some interesting elements, but overall.. it just doesn't work for me. The samples from the album also sound boring and uninspired. I haven't written the album off till I hear it, but my expectations are super low now.

Radiovoyr
01-28-2013, 12:43 PM
I actually love the video. I think it makes a lot of sense for the knife. It's voyeuristic and genderless... kind of their thing. I think people are expecting it to be more straight forward in the way that the Fever Ray videos all had a clear theme that matched the song in a obvious way. They were amazing, but I would be disappointed if the Knife made a video that was significantly less open to interpretation.

edit; Also, I loved the opera stuff and I still listening to it fairly regularly, so I am not bothered by some of the previews having that vibe. I think we have to remember that most of these songs are fucking long, so there is a really good chance that the previews are not showing off the meaty parts of the songs.

i LOVED full of fire when i first heard it, and i really liked the video. however, i watched the video a second time, and it doesn't really hold up to repeat viewings. i still love the song, but after watching the video for a tooth for an eye, i don't love it quite as much. a tooth for an eye was just more my style, i guess? i think i liked it quite so much in part because of the video, but i also really like it on its own.

I really like the new single: Got me more excited for the album than "Full of Fire" (which I still like and look forward to hearing in context).

I was wondering if anybody knows for sure if the Amazon version of the 3xLP comes with the lyric poster + CD, etc.? I'd imagine it does, but I can't say for certain. I'd hate to drop twice as much dough using the Rabid Records store to find out I could have got the same exact package for way less somewhere else.

The Knife just released this:

SOME FEELING IN THE BELLIES OF THE TANKERS WHO PASS US MAKING SAD MANIC BONGS LIKE DRUMS
Everybody is always desiring already imagined things.
When we travel between thresholds, people say: “you’re hiding.”
Not everything can be so easily explained.
We have a bellyache, a big stink, a major grouse or two with manufactured knowledge.
But how do you build an album about not knowing?
Now your voice is in my throat, floating there…
Often people take pills for these things.
To us the body is no longer psychological.
It’s certainly not a container, we don’t believe in metaphors.
Like dog/wolf—there aren’t many anymore.
Still at twilight something blurs over your shoulder.
Which is it?
It’s prickly.
Our hair is out.
We have made some decisions.
We want to fail more, act without authority.
Plus there’s something phlegmatic about the world state don’t you think?
There’s a blood system promoting biology as destiny.
A series of patriarchies that’s a problem to the Nth degree.
What about hyper-capitalism, this homicidal class system, the school system that’s kaput?
Then there are castles everywhere—look at them fake tanning and signing autographs!
At least there’s one thing we stand behind.
There’s still an ecosystem right? And here’s this sound system.
We dusted it off. Electronic is just one place in the body. We went temporarily acoustic.
We made our own instruments. We took an old bedspring, a microphone and:
“Stay out here…”
Now we’re bending our voices to sound like Emily R., who recorded the track on her cellphone speaker.
No habits!
There are other ways to do things.
Still sometimes it all seems so bad.
Don’t worry we won’t commit Harakiri, stomach cutting or anything like it.
The honor system is corrupt, just another privilege.
Like how it’s a privilege to make an album, to move freely.
We just have to go faster we mean breakneck we mean “like crazy.”
How at 5am that warehouse beat is coming up like sour steam.
All over the dance floor we’re asking: can this DNA turn into something else?
It’s not metaphorical. It’s explicit.
There are surgeries and fantasies and holes sweating through the wall.
It’s a question about feelings. It’s a question about who gets to risk.
But things don’t change so easily.
There’s still Monsanto, fracking and “terminator seeds.”
Every morning we wake up wondering: who’s kicking who on the street corner?
Now we have to start. We choose process over everything else.
Letting go of outcomes is another privilege.
Keep it lateral.
We ask our friends to help.
Together we leave the village and walk down the road. The light starts exercising itself. The old sun is out in his winter jumpsuit doing sit-ups and squat thrusts between the nettles and moldy brush.
10 more! We say to him. Get shaking!
Our walk gets longer. It’s a walk in the panpipes of the body. We come to the edge. So much water. The ocean is twice its original size. We take a bunch of surveys. They know everything about us. We don’t buy what they say. We take a heap of estrogen. All around us things are howling and then we stand on the pier end. The light is pink and green and pink and green. It reminds us of home—like we imagine it could be. But when the color pancakes out over the horizon, we don’t know what we’re looking at. That’s ok. This time it’s structural.
No habits!
Of course we’re growing restless.

i'm not really impressed so far. half the album seems to be an exercise in repeating strange sounds over and over to a steady beat. I think Silent Shout will always stand at the forefront of their catalogue for me because it was something different and refreshing for the time. this one... not too keen on. seems very bland and almost lazy in places.

You might not dig it, but bland and lazy? I don't know, I think making Deep Cuts or Silent Shout v2.0 would have been more lazy, as you put it. Just by looking at their most recent works (Olof's Oni Ayhun stuff and Tomorrow, in a Year), I think it was fairly evident where they'd be heading with their next album.

I chose to skip the previews for this, so upon my first listen I was really surprised by the percussion on these songs. For a complete lack of a better description, a lot of it sounds like some sort of twisted electronic caveman music, which I think is totally fucking rad. I still think Full of Fire is brilliant, but I'm loving Raging Lung, Without You My Life Would Be Boring, and especially Stay Out Here. Two of the most interesting female vocalists in music right now on the same track = bliss.

I liked Tomorrow, in a Year, but I thought they did go a little off the deep end experimentally with some of that stuff. But when they didn't, it was really special... like Colouring of Pigeons for example. That's what this album feels like to me; them keeping the experimentation in check a bit more. Definitely hitting the sweet spot for me.

This album's a thinker. Even if I don't end up liking it as much as Silent Shout (which I'm sure I won't - nothing will ever top that), it's really refreshing to see a band release music this dense and cerebral. You feel like you need to study it academically almost as much as you enjoy it aesthetically.

i'm going to keep listening to it in case it's a grower, but to kind of further refine my earlier opinion, so far it seems like I can put this album on, and by the time it finishes, I've missed it, because it blends so much to my ears. I liked Silent Shout as I said previously, and i'm also a fan of the Fever Ray material, so i'm hoping maybe it just hasn't clicked or sunk in yet.

i'm still trying to digest this album
it is quite different from the earlier stuff

for me, it's almost like a Portishead "Third" situation...
where everything you've come to expect from a group is flipped on its head

it is bad? ...not at all
just a bit more to take in and not as direct as their previous efforts

a real sit down and listen sorta album

i can't help thinking the new album sounds like what htda were trying to do. you know... weird/dark electronic beats, full of bleeps and heavy synths featuring female vocals. it's a lot more daring and interesting tho, imo. "full of fire" might be my favorite song right now...

Calm down, fanboy. Shaking the Habitual is disappointment of the year.

STH is like Silent Shout without great melodies, basslines, beats, vocals, songs.

We'll see in 1-2 years who will still listen this rubbish album.

i completely disagree with you. i feel like shaking the habitual took the direction in which they were going with silent shout, added in some fever ray flare, and then just kept going. it's perfect. i literally would not change a thing about the album.

I agree with eversonpoe, I wouldn't change a thing either. It's an exhausting and demanding listen but I think that's why I love the record so much. I'm not sure if it's album of the year material for me just yet, but I do know of all the records that I've heard this year...this is for sure in the top five somewhere. It's really good.

I'd tried The Kinfe out in the past because people were so so excited about them, and I don't know which songs/albums in particular I'd listened to but none of them did it for me, I couldn't understand it. (Blasphemy, I know!) And then that remix on YZR came out, and... it was even more terrible.

However, I gave Shaking the Habitual a go and am totally sold. It reminds me of post-"Loves Secret Domain" Coil, a la Further Down the Spiral. It's not music for every occasion, but I was really taken by this album. The album artwork is terrible, but the music is a treasure.

Anyone seen the footage from their current tour? The live show looks ridiculous. But in the best way possible. Apparently like half of the show is just playback on the PA while a group of aerobics dancers dressed like an 80s Richard Simmons tape do aerobics routines on stage. Also the merch booth doubles as a bookstore.

The vinyl sounds better than my sennheiser head phone's. however my set up it pretty good, but I would like get 150 watt speakers. My amp pushes so much power

OK, for me the new album was difficult to get into. Admittedly, I haven't heard it in good conditions so far, but still, it didn't sound like something I would be enjoying much.

BUT...after seeing them live in Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, my mind was blown. They played most of (if not all) the Shaking the Habitual album + Silent Shout (the song) at the end. It was fucking amazing. The music, the scene setup and the dancers, oh the dancers! They gave life to the songs. And the crowd was loving it. One of the best musical experiences of my life.

Old Dreams Waiting to be Realized, definitely doesn't get enough love. It's extremely abstract, but so well done. It reminds of the NASA Voyager recordings (12, 30 minute recordings of the electromagnetic spectrum of the actual planets and their moons, run through a radio receiver).

Raging Lung is the next single off STH and its getting a vinyl release soon! Also, The Knife's self titled debut (2001) is getting released on vinyl for the 1st time in late Oct early Nov. Amazon and Insound are currently taking pre orders. Still hoping for a Shaking the Habitual tour in the states. They recently cancelled a couple shows because they are working on new show elements etc so one can hope they will tour more.

i loved the show, as did my fiancee, but we were sitting up in the front of the balcony. all of my friends who went were down on the floor and said it was extremely overwhelming, and they also didn't like the performance in general. i personally thought it was brilliant, the choreography was awesome, and i didn't care that a lot of it was playback, because it was so interesting to watch. that said, i definitely preferred the first few songs where they were all actually playing instruments, but it wasn't any kind of deal-breaker for me. i'm really glad i went, and i'm really glad it was what it was. i would have been pretty bored if it was just karin and olof standing up there with laptops.

It could be said that Pitchfork should have had someone who was familiar with the Kinfe be the one to write that article up. "In their post on their site this morning, the Knife offered the following cryptic message" could probably also be written as "In their post on their site this morning, the Knife quoted lyrics from their song 'Without You My Life Would Be Boring', the track from which their latest album takes its name."

So I managed to get tickets to their show in Manchester toward the end of their run in the UK. I'm mad excited about this, really can't wait. What do they sell merch wise, anything out of the ordinary?

When I saw them in oakland they had the worst merch I have ever seen. The shirts were like bright yellow or blue and really had nothing to do with the knife, infact I don't even think they said the knife or anything related to them any where on the shirts slash hoodies slash other weird stuff. I'm all for weird stuff but I believe the merchandise was about equal rights for all sexual orientations. Maybe Im dead wrong, but I thought the designs and everything about the merch was complete crap

Now for the show, it was 95 percent pre recorded, and extremely bizarre which is cool, if they were actually playing their instruments or really singing. As a knife fan I thought that was a kick in the nuts after paying money to see them them. Many people loved the show for what it is, I personally can't get passed that.

Yea, see I've read plenty about it so have an idea what to expect. I like the idea that it's different, it's not gonna be the same as an average show. As far as merch goes I kinda envisaged it being lots of bright colours and possibly slightly cheesy designs and stuff. I'm kinda hoping they might have some stuff for sale in terms of CD's or vinyl that I won't have bought by that point [I'm gradually working my way through their discography!] so I can buy a few bits directly from them.

So, saw The Knife last night. Absolutely brilliant, really enjoyed their set. Pretty varied, got a few from Silent Shout, a few from Shaking the Habitual and Pass This On. I'll pull together the full setlist later. Merch was disappointing tho, a t-shirt a few posters and the albums on vinyl. They had the Shaken Up Versions CD listed but didn't have any, so I've ordered that and the vinyl off their webstore. Didn't manage to get any decent photos but there were a few around me who did so I'm hoping I'll find them on the internet later. Genuinely brilliant show tho.

wait, you're disappointed in the merch even though they had all the albums on vinyl, plus a t-shirt and posters? when i saw them all they had were several horrible t-shirts and no vinyl. i would have been so much happier to pick up the vinyl directly from them at a show rather than ordering it off amazon.

Only in the sense that I was disappointed I couldn't buy the stuff I wanted- I already own all the albums on vinyl and CD. I meant more that there wasn't stuff for me to buy, if you didn't already own this stuff it would have been a brilliant merch stand. Purely selfish standpoint. Seen lots of people on Facebook complaining cos it wasn't all live, I tend to think if you've read anything about their live performances in the last 12 months you ought to be aware there's a good chance that could happen. Can understand why you'd be disappointed but it's not like it wasn't known before the tickets went on sale!

As an aside, it had passed me by completely that Shaken Up Versions had a physical release. They played We Share Our Mothers Health, Silent Shout and Bird Shaken Up Versions last night... All were fantastic

In the interview above they talk about how their older music sounds dated, but I think Silent Shout holds up remarkably well and doesn't sound nearly as dated as most things coming from the mid 00's. And its super cool to read abt the analog processes used to make SS that i think help it hold up to this day. We Share Our Mothers Health was the first SS track I heard in '08 and I still think that single could be well received today for example.

Karin mentions the theatre work they has done recently, but there at least 2 or more different ones they has worked on over the last 5 years. I truly hope they release Karin's instrumental theatre work in some physical medium, or at least give us the instrumental version of Fever Ray in the meantime!

https://store.mute.com/browse/fever-ray/products/fever-ray-plunge-2

wish it wasn't $50 for the deluxe 2xLP :/

the deluxe edition vinyl descriptions are different between Mute (face mask, bespoke foil packaging) and Rabid Records (blood red gel outer sleeve) which is unfortunate because rabid doesn't ship to the us or canada. hopefully its the same edition for everybody:

ALSO: Fever Ray will embark on a live tour in 2018!

Red Trails is fucking beautiful. Woah. Some of her best vocals. This is a great and beautifully colorful, human album that takes constantly synthetic noises and manages to make all of them engage the senses and remind you how alive you are.

Listening on Apple Music now. Not yet available on Spotify.

This is really, really good. Great production on the tracks, and Karin's vocals are fantastic. Haven't heard any of her signature voice modulation effects yet.

it's so much better than the single edit. it actually has time to build before the vocals come in and it flows so well within the context at the album. haven't finished the whole album but, so far, the only song i don't love is "IDK about you"

Everyone here seems to have nothing but praise for the new record, which is great. But if I might play devil's advocate for a minute...

This doesn't feel like a Fever Ray album to me. If I were a huge The Knife fan I'd be over the moon about it because to me it sounds very much like a Knife album (and this is the Knife thread after all). But if I'm being honest I'm not all that big a Knife fan. I am however a huge fan of the first Fever Ray record and I'd put it in my top albums all time. Tracks like Concrete Walls, Dry and Dusty, If I Had a Heart, Stranger Than Kindness, Keep The Streets Empty are so stunningly dark yet beautiful and feel both ancient and futuristic somehow. I connected with it instantly and with the new record it's like nothing works for me, not one track, not even one. I've had artists I love make a great record followed by a not so great record before, but even then there's always been some element that was still there whereas this feels as if its two different artists entirely. So I guess my question to those who love the new record is, what am I missing? Am I alone in thinking this isn't up to par with the first record? Do you prefer The Knife's discography or Fever Ray?

I should also mention that this is all only my opinion and if you are enjoying Plunge by all means continue to do so at all costs. KDA is a great artist and even when I don't connect to the work personally I can still recognize and appreciate the attempt at something new and regardless of where I end up with this record I will no doubt continue to check out anything she releases. Also, I don't completely dislike the Knife, I just never loved any of those records like I did with Fever Ray. Silent Shout being my favorite, particularly the tracks forest families and silent shout still stand out to me as great and get regular spins.

Tracks like Mustn't Hurry, Plunge and Red Trails... even Mama's Hand sound very much in the vein of the self-titled to me, but fitted with the more abrasive production of this album. Mustn't Hurry scratches that 2009 itch so well that I feel it'd fit pretty snuggly with the songs on that first record. Plunge (the track) also reminds me of Coconut.

People also said Shaking the Habitual sounded like Fever Ray when it released I seem to recall. Bound to happen I guess when an artist does a solo joint and then produces more music with the prior krew.

Mute Records confirmed that Fever Ray will tour in 2018! I can't help but wonder if they will rework older material (similarly to the silent shout/sth tours) to fit in with the new stuff? Will any of the older FR "characters" or costumes come back or will it all be new? Will she have a proper band like back in '08?

"Wanna Sip" has been a grower for me. its a good track, and i like it more on every listen (and hope they play it live next year), but compared to past dreijer album openers it is a weaker track. as a album opener compared to heartbeats, if i had a heart, silent shout etc. i feel like i remember hearing those songs for the first time more or less, and having my mind blown at the time!

"Mustn't Hurry" is some straight 2008-10 era magic brought back to life in my brain and ears. its magic. i am glad we got at least one track that is so similar to the first album

"A Part of Us" a cool collaboration, and i think this may be my favorite chorus on the album right now: i dig/i plant/a walnut tree/i pour a lot of water on. fever ray lyrics on a song that reminds me of the knife

"Falling" is a really great slow burner thats best on headphones or loud speakers! kind of reminds me shaking the habitual

"IDK About You" i really love karin's vocal delivery on here. another track i didn't appreciate until listen 4 or 5, this tracks sounds very deep cuts to me and would fit in easily with is it medicine, and listen now

"This Country" amazing. play it loud. dance to it with your friends and lovers!

"The Plunge" this one feels like a cousin to the captain, but it likes to move, and there is nothing wrong with that! i can really imagine this one being played live on the 06 silent shout tour

"To the Moon and Back" still diggin' on this track! an unlikely lead single for fever ray that sounds more like the knife's shaking the habitual

"Red Trails" a immediate stand out for me, very powerful and it feels very fever ray without sounding too close to album one. i would take a whole album of this: fever ray with strings. the "setting the snow on fire" lyric directly harkens back to album one and karin's vocals kill me!. this is one of the best tracks on the album imo. been on repeat a lot

"An Itch" my least favorite at the moment, not that i don't like it. i like this track, but not in this context. i think its a really weird choice to put this track where it is on the album idk

"Mama's Hand" great album closer, and it fits greatly in with the older material or silent shout

He's great at articulating his opinions but I don't know if I have ever once heard a review of his that I actually agreed with. Plunge is great and feels like a fully-formed continuation of all of the sounds, themes, moods and subjects Karen loves to create music about. His criticism that it feels out of whack makes no sense to me, either -- the album has a really constant sense of pulse and speed and even the quieter songs layer on intensity and a feeling of mood. I don't have many complaints at all and at worst, I wish it had more to it, but the length is actually a positive for me since I have a hard time sitting down to listen to an hour+ long album regularly these days.

I just watched that review and it's pretty much the same type of reaction I had to it in my post here a couple days ago. Seemed like he was as shocked as I was that he didn't like it. I think it may have something to do with just how high I regarded the 1st record but this one just does nothing for me. I do agree with you though that it was fairly cohesive and the songs do seem to fit together in a similar space. I just happened to not really like or connect with that space. Oh well, its not like this record erases the greatness of the 1st.

I was wondering when/if they would do a live album for the last Fever Ray Tour (https://rabid.lnk.to/livetroxyEm). That vinyl looks good but god damn is it pricey. Over $70 to ship to the US. Gonna have to pass on this unless they put it up for sale in the US. Wish it wasn't limited :(
