I placed two orders when NTAE came out. A big one (vinyls, shirt, ntae...) and a small one with a shirt and the physical component and now I'll recieve the shirt from the smaller order (for my gf) and no envelope with dirt.

I really did get mine, but I didn't open it. It's a black envelope sealed in an outer clear plastic envelope. I didn't bother opening it because I don't want black dust all over the place. I have two cats and one of my cats has allergies and I don't want her getting sick. No matter how much I clean the counter somehow she will breathe the one speck I didn't get. I put the physical component in between my slowly growing vinyl collection. If there was a meet n greet pass in there for the upcoming tour then I would take it out to the garage and open it up.
As for nin.com all my purchases have been one item at a time or in some cases two at a time, (I'm on a budget, I have been buying a couple of vinyls per paycheck). Under my account on nin.com I have a whole bunch of orders that say "unfulfilled" when they switch to "fulfilled" thats when I know to start looking for them in the mail. They have never sent me a shipping notice.

Yeah, I wish I had gone through with the second order so I could have one still sealed for display (because this package, once opened, is very anti-display). Took photos of my pages, I'll upload them later.
Even though I knew what I was getting, I still really enjoyed the experience, and the final product is awesome. I really like the idea of picking up some frames and framing these individually.

I had to wash my hands twice to get it off, so I don't know how easy it would be to remove it from the contents, which is probably the point.

My guess is rather then trying to brush it off get a can of air for cleaning electronics and shoot it with that, if you brush it off, you smear it into the paper.

Edit to update:
Some more iPhone 5s photos I threw on Instagram to show my color variations. Going to talk to a local framer in a few days about ideas for framing these, I want them to have as much of the powder still on them as possible for ~authenticity~ and also because that's part of the ~aesthetic~ of these pieces (only semi-sarcastic, because this is 1,000% an art style that I love, and everything about these cards reminds me of the things you find when exploring abandoned buildings, including the black dust... except this black dust isn't a major health hazard) and when I do I will probably have the capability to get decent photos of them (set them all out flat and use a real camera with natural lighting instead of 2 lights with different color temperatures).

Dave Grohl's credit is cut in half so there's a top + bottom, and the bottom half is justified much more to the left than the top, etc. (and the rest of the song credits follow suit)

I should've thought to have someone take pictures but it was too much of a hassle with hands all dirtied up; I'll have to see about reopening it in a day or two if that variant doesn't get posted.

Mine looks the same way. I was kind of surprised (and a little disappointed, but my other cards were pretty awesome looking, so whatever).

All and all, I got a pretty good selection of card variants. The only thing I would change would be to get the white-text-on-blue title card and the blue-text-on-red She's Gone lyrics. Hell, anyone want to trade me for them, give me a PM. Though I doubt anyone would actually want the versions of them I have.

By the way, I put the entire thing in that frame. Cheap grocery store frame, but it works. And you can clean the cards off pretty well with paper towels.

It's all opened and used but with this.....I can't bring myself to open it yet which is weird for me. I feel like i will somehow regret it. It's very cool though, what I've seen. I love the concept of it.

The whole concept of the album and music is amazing but i fear its an ending. It feels like a goodbye to a certain aspect of nin. I really hope it's not.

I felt the same way with the last issue of the Sandman. It actually took me nearly two years to finally read the last issue (even though I picked it up on release day). Like some kind of magic would dissipate once I finally read it.

I haven't received my copy of NTAE yet, but I can't not open it. The whole experience is literally why I ordered the physical edition. But, clearly I'm not in any space to judge, however, I do understand.

I feel like the opening of it, the creation of the mess, the smearing of the soot all over the cards, the fingerprints, looking and touching everything... it's a essential part of the NIN NTAE experience. I'm going to open mine this weekend. I feel like it deserves my attention. And it's going to be fun.

The purple credits card does have a VERY faint NIN logo on the back, can barely even see it in good lighting, at least with my kitchen lights anyway.

I really dig mine, kind glad my credits aren't landscape, but disappointed my credits card shows no sign of halo 29. I've looked "so hard... so long..." but it's not on mine.

Mine looks the same way. I was kind of surprised (and a little disappointed, but my other cards were pretty awesome looking, so whatever).

All and all, I got a pretty good selection of card variants. The only thing I would change would be to get the white-text-on-blue title card and the blue-text-on-red She's Gone lyrics. Hell, anyone want to trade me for them, give me a PM. Though I doubt anyone would actually want the versions of them I have.

By the way, I put the entire thing in that frame. Cheap grocery store frame, but it works. And you can clean the cards off pretty well with paper towels.

I'd prob trade she's gone away cards with you if we're ever around each other. You get to the twin cities much? I see your in Madison. My brother went to school there and his family in law is in Oshkosh.

there's my whole set of pictures (which my wife patiently took while i carefully opened and inspected everything with rubber gloves). of course we listened to the EP (again) while going through the process. it was really fun.

of note:
- i could not see the NIN logo or halo designation anywhere, but it's possible it might be there in better lighting

My component came in today. It had a sticker that said "do not open this will make a mess". My dad insisted to open it. Fuck it, why not. I thought nah, it's probably a gimmick. Nope. No gimmick. Whatever the black envelope is/was made of got all over our hands and kitchen counter.

Working on putting up some 1600 dpi scans of two different sets, but my scanner is slow and kind of shitty...

I seem to have a different set of impressions on the back of my credits card, for instance (and I don't seem to have the NIN logo or halo designation on mine, too).

i got this variation. didn't take pictures, just wanted to clean up. i'm really happy with it, feels totally worth $12 and then some. that said, i put it back in the plastic sleeve and i have no intention of opening it again.

This thread seemed to be the right place to mention this particular thought concerning the physical component's black dust or powder. Anyway, I was just wondering if it's actually corn starch colored black. It also made me wonder if they're to represent the ashes of all the songs with fire and burning references in them as the remains of the idea of him.

Aside from that, I'm just thankful that I have been very much fulfilled upon receiving it, as it'll give me another way to enjoy Not The Actual Events in its entirety. As much as I still enjoy looking through CD cases and booklets, this certainly is yet another creative and brand new experience for me that I definitely appreciate. I also didn't mind the delays that much because I got used to things being postponed or simply not happening whenever it came to Nine Inch Nails, which as a result lead me to be very patient and accepting with whatever Trent Reznor does or doesn't do no matter how many times he might openly suggest or merely hint at any type of prospective release or tour.

I'm also pretty big on the whole "I'll only believe it when I actually see it." approach to such things, so it still gives me yet another reason to be thankful and appreciative, as I saw, touched and believed.

I suppose you can say that my faith and devotion to NIN is still going strong. I also thought to myself, with all the times I bought multiple NIN albums as presents, what's $12.00 without the physical component?

But again, it is quite a relief and pleasant surprise to have it, as I also enjoy the visual aspects of music, with further proof of the money being well spent, whether they be videos or album art even if I tend to block out images and videos from time to time while listening to music.

Yeah, I'd noticed that there seemed to be more than one font layout for The Idea of You, even though they otherwise superficially look quite similar. I hadn't yet looked closely enough to find out if it really was just two distinct versions or not; I'll probably end up splitting up my summary page to reflect that once I have a bit of time.

Edit: I wonder if there's a third variant for She's Gone Away but the difference is on the back of the card, not the front. We don't have nearly as many pics/scans of those yet...

I'm pretty sure that there are two different variations of the green card stock for "Dear World"
From what I've seen, some are bright green and some are dull green. Of course, I'm aware that different cammeras and or different backgrounds might affect the "green", however comparing the photos people have put up and comparing the white, blue, black, purple, etc within the same picture... I'm fairly certain that there are two different "greens". One is bright, and one is dull. The bright green is already documented. Looking through the thread, my set seems like one of the common ones. Red/blue "She's Gone Away," white "Branches/Bones," etc. A couple other people in this thread have my exact set, from what I can tell. I put together a Flickr album here (https://www.flickr.com/photos/enigmaticyelling/albums/72157679421652870).

If some of the pictures look a little bit weird in certain spots, it's because I had to edit out my name and address because I'm a stupid asshole who photographed my set on top of my mailing envelope.

Also, I cannot find even the slightest hint of the NIN logo / Halo Twenty Nine on my credits page. Nothing. It might have been filled in by the "dirt" (I don't know what else to call it), but I feel like I'd at least be able to tell if that was the case. Oh well.

Yeah, you're definitely right about The Idea Of You having two very distinct black-on-white versions, so I've split those out.

I'm half sold on Branches/Bones... I do notice that I've got two images in the "white with black text" section on there which have noticeably different/bigger splotches from the rest, but I'm no longer certain that those don't belong in the "blue with black text" category... The very first image actually sort of looks to me like the photo itself is black-and-white, which makes the color difficult to see, and the color on the second one looks like it could be blue, and it's just a white balance issue causing it to look a little more white to me. The reddish-looking splotch on the top of that one looks pretty similar huewise to some of the splotches in the images in the Blue section.

Edit: Yeah, after looking at those two more, I am quite positive that they belong in the Blue section, not White. I've removed the first entirely (I doublechecked and that whole photoset was entirely black+white, so color would be difficult to discern), and the other one looks much better up with the Blues.

Yeah, I'm half-sold on that as well; the second image on my index in particular seems to be a noticeably different shade (which matches the pic you posted). I'll probably split that out once one more better-isolated image of the alternate tint pops up somewhere.

I wiped the excess pigment off of my cards with a paper towel, and it made Branches Bones look really cool. The idea of taking the art and giving it my own unique spin was quite euphoric, indeed. ;)

I honestly don't get keeping it sealed. The contents inside are meant to be seen and experienced. If you're going to try to preserve anything, at least take the contents out and get them framed so you can enjoy them. I like the sticker and the envelope, but it's definitely not as cool as the contents inside it.

For some reason, I didn't think of the word dirt to describe the powder or dust, which in turn reminded me of the "My empire of dirt." lyric from Hurt. I know that this is more of a Random NIN Thoughts type of post, but you saying that got me thinking about that particular line. It also reminded me about "The ashes and debris." from Non-Entity and the "Peel off our skin, we're gonna burn what we were to the ground. Fuck in the fire and we'll spread all the ashes around." from Sunspots. (Along with any other song that refers to fire and burning.)

This certainly makes it all the more interesting, as the dirt/dust/powder has been adding to all sorts of possible interpretations concerning Not The Actual Events. Trent Reznor has certainly done it again.

I'm pretty sure it's part of the TDS cover/back cover (vs. a similar rehash). I've looked and looked at the zoomed in close ups from Robs re-photographing (available here (http://portraitofdecay.net/tds.nin.com/)), but I'm not able to definitively match the markers. Maybe someone else will spot it.

So, you mention "goo". That is what I got sort of. While many received dust, mine is cakey clumps that need to be scraped off. When opening the envelope, the cards needed to be pryed out. lots of cakey debris inside. Looks like craters in the envelope from fluid drops on the dust. At first I attributed it to being in hot, humid Florida, then I saw the fluid marks.

I did order 2 sets, 1 within the first hour of availability, another in late January when it came back for sale. Both arrived the same day at 2 separate addresses.

Because of @sheepdean (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=350)'s post about expired makeup I went and opened my second one. Wish i hadn't, but ah well. Exact same set aside from my Burning Bright card which is the lamest one (standard black and white, no 3D colors, no blocked out text) instead of the red and black the other came with. All cards are black and white except for the red and blue She's Gone Away and the purple credits card. Really wanted a green or blue card. It also seemed way dirtier than the first for whatever reason. Might be open to trading with somebody else's set that has the blue Branches_Bones or the green Dear World if they're interested since I planned on framing all of the cards together but it'd look pretty shitty having almost all of them being identical anyway.

I hated the idea of individual frames for the cards as it was intended to be viewed as one piece, so I went to hobby lobby (I know) and picked up one of those double glass frames and a large piece of semi transparent paper and threw this together. I'm happy enough with the result, and I was able to get some dirt smudged on the paper.

Although the single area of Wound that is zoomed in on for Dear World may not match up with the quickly available photographs of Rob's, this certainly does not eliminate that the image in Dear World is not, in fact, a zoomed in area of Wound. If we had the entire piece to look at in that kind of quality, maybe more of us would notice the exact area quicker. Who knows, maybe we'll quickly see it in @kraw (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=274) 's remastered artwork for the Definitive Edition.

I finally opened mine this morn. Very cool. Black credits card, no logo or halo, 3D burning bright, medium dust. Blue branches/bones dark she's gone away. Everything else is white ish paper with black letters. Played album while I opened. Wish I had the nin and halo designation. But, glad I finally opened.

Edit- it was very spur of the moment. I was just going to leave it sealed but i thought, why the fuck am I holding this? I would never sell it. Might as well do with it what TR intended.

I hated the idea of individual frames for the cards as it was intended to be viewed as one piece, so I went to hobby lobby (I know) and picked up one of those double glass frames and a large piece of semi transparent paper and threw this together. I'm happy enough with the result, and I was able to get some dirt smudged on the paper.

Just opened mine today. NIN logo was on the back of the album credit card, near the top. It was hard to see. Had to tilt the card and get it in the right light. I think the halo number is there too. Photos below.

This may have been mentioned already (or noticed). It appears that there are no real "sets" of cards (maybe only for the all black/white ones?). There are different color versions of each card, but it looks like they are randomly grouped together.

These 2 sets have the Red with blue type She's Gone card, but different versions of the Burning Bright card. It's cool that there are many collections out there.

Just received my physical component (was down in the Keys last week with the in-laws) and must say I was, and still am, very shocked at how much I love this concept. My reaction stream went a little like this: what the actual fuck; woah; I can't stop looking at this/playing with this/thinking about this/smudging this/highlighting lyrics with soot/thinking about how to frame or display this. About a half hour later, I put it all back into the envelope and on to my workbench in the garage until I can think of a way to matte & frame this.

Since then, I couldn't help but think of how well it fits my take of NTAE. I want to frame this ugly, smudged up thing to hang on the wall. People will probably ask me about it, and I'll be all giddy as I espouse my NIN fandom. My perception of the actual events (opening up a package of random lyrics cards and an x-ray of two dudes packaged in an envelope topped with black toner powder) will totally not be understood by anyone I try to explain it to.

i got a very sharp blade and cut along the line of the label so cutting through the flap of the envelope, if you do this way be very careful not to cut too deep

I don't actually have one myself, but any small knife/scissors would do the trick. Just cut open the top of the envelope. Leaves the sticker entirely intact.

I placed a pair of scissors exactly on the crease of the flap, then cut ever so slightly below that so the opened part was not exactly on the top. This leaves a little bend so that your powder doesn't just pour out of the top if you happen to shift the envelope with the contents still inside. A perfectly straight cut/opening could end up being a detriment. The sticker stays clean as well.

Not sure if i'm late, but it's easy to peel off the sticker without ruining it.

Peel off one corner very carefully, just enough so you have enough to pick it with your fingers, and then slowly blow your breath on the back of the sticker (where the sticker and the envelope meet) as you SLOWLY peel it off. The moisture of your breath will help loosen the glue/stickiness, making it less likely to tear.

You could do this using vapor (a kettle, water boiler), but that might be toomuch moisture and might ruin the envelope and the cards. Your breath gives u more control.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Used a metal straightedge & utility knife to cut a thin strip off of the right side (when looking @ the sticker) of the plastic & through the envelope. Mucked the cards up for a while & gave them a double coat of clear lacquer. Blasted out the envelope with compressed air. No fuss, no muss when you want to look at them. The cards are definitely going in a frame. Found a brushed aluminum/glass cabinet door at work that will fit all 6 cards, with the transparency going over the (pink & purple) credits card. Gonna silicone a backing on. Should look great when it's done. This is cool stuff.

I don't know, I feel like you really have to break that seal otherwise it defeats the purpose. I'm sure there's a way to slowly open it while still keeping the words intact once broken.

I'm sorry for delay in response. Similar, but not nearly that much, maybe 5-7 "drops". My envelope the side with with the fold over, was coated but looked like craters, almost as if it were fine sand with water drop marks. I guess that describes it best

What did you use to seal them?

It was just some off the shelf spray lacquer that we had kicking around the shop at work. Make multiple light coats. I think an acrylic clear spray would be best, as it doesn't smell as bad.
