I'm not much into rap anymore, but Scroobius Pip - Distraction Pieces was great.

The opening track was produced by Danny Lohner.

i havent heard the insane warrior yet, big rj fan - ill have to check it out. speaking of producers, ive been obsessed with clams casino's 2 releases so far. and im impressed with tyler's voice but hoping for some more substance the new round.

doom was good but im still waitin on his next full release. ive been a fan since 2000 and i watched a great interview with him, LONG, that helps give a lot of insight to all his persona's, influences and work style.

also, i think it's debatable whats better - HSCPII or the fight for your right extended video. classic.

I would call this some staying true to themselves hip hop. They take issue with artists that sell their souls for the big pop hooks and manufactured images. Gas Mask is a definite grower and now stands out as one of the best hip hop releases of the last year. You can feel a definite throwback to some of the early 90s artists that were hard but conscious.

i liked the ep by quelle chris titled "the son". he produced a few tracks on danny brown's "xxx" as well and also put an album out a few weeks ago. it's not as good as "xxx" but still solid. also the roots' new album, "undun", seemed quite good upon first listen. big k.r.i.t.s.'s "return of 4eva" also comes to mind.

i recently made a little mix of some rap-stuff, entirely released in 2011 (and also for free). you can listen or download here: http://www.soundcloud.com/bubble_joe/mix-02-hip-hop-music-is-good (http://soundcloud.com/bubble_joe/mix-02-hip-hop-music-is-good)

If you're into rap, you simply must check out Kendrick Lamar. He's a Compton native with some unbelievable writing skills, and his delivery is amazing. His label debut just came out recently, and the production is top-notch as well. Here's a sample of his mastery:

Das Racist are pretty much everything I want from rap. Cripplingly clever rhymes, DGAF attitude, and a shred of social consciousness. On that note, I am really, really looking forward to Despot (hopefully) finally putting out an album next year--entirely produced by Ratatat. I also enjoyed A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, and Shabbazz Palaces this year, to name a few. I noticed Shabbazz Palaces isn't getting any love in this thread, he's fucking great. And a little dude named Lakutis who "DJ"s for Das Racist on the road, just put out a free EP over at Mishka NYC (http://mishkanyc.bandcamp.com/album/lakutis-im-in-the-forest-ep) that is pretty decent. I'm down with any rapper who throws in back-to-back references to Twin Peaks and Kevin Costner in Waterworld.

edit: Odd Future's lyrics are way too problematic for me to appreciate them. Except Frank Ocean, but he's not rap, is he.

Really didn't like Goblin. I actually liked "Yonkers" but the rest of the album mostly fell flat. I enjoyed Bastard a considerable bit more.

I feel like I didn't really listen to enough rap and hip-hop this year. Been going through a few releases the last few days. Enjoyed Shabazz Palaces. Enjoyed Death Grips. Was disappointed by the new Common and The Roots.

im thinking he will be once he hits 18.

He is 18 now isn't he? I thought he wasn't going to get out until he was 18 and now he's out.

My bad, he's 17 till the 24th. Still, I'm sure he had a falling out with Tyler or a clash with how it's going. Casey, what was the issue they were having?

cicatriz
02-09-2012, 03:59 AM
I think they're all upset that Earl only got out of Samoa because of AIM/Steinberg Entertainment, with blessings from his mother too, and then signed the Steinberg lady to be his manager (who was also 2Pac's first manager, or somethin'). He's not with Odd Future, I doubt he will be in a little over 2 weeks when he turns 18 either. Him having his own website is a pretty big sign of that. I mean, Tyler doesn't have his own site.

That said, though... Jasper is Earl's age, and he seems genuinely happy that he's home. Tyler, Domo & Hodgy are kinda... happy, but upset about the situation. I haven't checked Twitter in a few hours but the last week I saw from any of them was Domo saying basically the situation is fucked, but he loved "Home". And so do I. It's tight as fuck.

Pretty sure I heard a reference to one of the OFWGKTA associates in there, maybe. Thought I heard a line about Lucas.

Anyone into Aussie hip hop? It's certainly got a different feel to it. A lot of US stuff (not so much the songs posted in this thread, but the more mainstream stuff) is so unrelatable to people down here. We dont have a huge african australian population and we're not so much into jesus and all that. A lot of that gangsta stuff just comes off a little gimmicky and try hard, i guess.

Popular aussie rap/hiphop is way more laid back. It doesn't take itself too seriously and a lot of tunes are about enjoying the simple things. Here's a few cool songs I've dug over the years. (skip to 1:10 on the first song if the intro bores you)

Yeah, that track is pretty good. When I have time I'll listen to the rest.

This year has been my year of finally accepting hip-hop, whereas before I had this weird prejudice against it. I don't like it if all they ever talk about is drugs and women though, I prefer it to actually be about something. Or at least be somewhat clever with the drugs and women references? And also maybe have a vocabulary.

This year I've been really into:
Kanye West (going back through his past work has been a revelation after ignoring him for so long)
Le1f (great NYC rapper who I love for objectifying men in the same way that straight male rappers objectify women? double standard)
Shabazz Palaces (last year's Black Up was the best album of 2011 - very cool and unique sound)
The Weeknd (some of it, anyway)
WHY? (white boy rap fused to indie rock)
Death Grips (The Money Store and Exmilitary are so brutal and fresh and exciting)
THEESatisfaction (sort of protégées to Shabazz Palaces, very promising duo)

I'd also like to recommend "History Will Absolve Me" by rapper billy woods. It's got very powerful lyrics... topics mainly include politics, colonialism and so on. Been listening to this a lot lately:

http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG_500/MI0001/594/MI0001594919.jpg?partner=allrovi.com

AZ was the only guest spot on Nas' Illmatic album a year prior. Nas returns the favor by showing up on one of the tracks on this record. Track for track, it's almost a musical companion piece to Illmatic.

But for all the acclaim Illmatic receives, this is the better of the two albums, in my opinion. The songs leave a better lasting first impression and grow richer the more time you spend with them. Plus, the beats are fucking sublime. Well worth checking out if you like underground NYC hip-hop from the 90's.

Because of your post I found this album and gave it a few listens. Although this album contains a few really good songs... I would never say it's close to or surpasses Illmatic. The reason for this is that Doe Or Die also features a couple really cheesy choruses and weak tracks. "Sugar Hill Baby. Sugar Hill!" being an example of a cheesy section of one of those songs.

However, the solid songs are well worth listening to and AZ has a nice up-beat, technically strong flow.... You can feel that AZ comes from the same school as Nas. I will eventually pare this album down to a really good one with the removal of some songs.

One of my favorite hip hop albums of all time is The Shining by J Dilla and company. Every track is a classic.

I thought The Shining lacked something as it sounded unfinished (as it probably was unfinished at the time of Dilla's passing). It's a bit all over the place, sonically. His best album, imo, is still Fantastic Vol. II by Slum Village, followed by his own release, Ruff Draft.

I also love this production of his... it really shows his Detroit techno influences:

25 bucks is one of the better songs on old. it's a perfect depiction of his earlier days before things got too dark with drugs.

to me, it's very reminiscent of the fondness of hustling during your youth before the reality of drugs and real life settled in.

Good lord, look at this.

Wu-Tang Clan Announce Another New Album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. Only one copy will be produced.

http://cdn4.pitchfork.com/news/54518/bf238d4d.jpg

In July, Wu-Tang Clan will release a new album, A Better Tomorrow, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of the group's debut. But Forbes reports that they're also set to release another LP, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, with a caveat: They're just making one copy of the double album, which was recorded in secret over the last few years.

The album, which features the group's original members, will be housed inside an engraved silver-and-nickel box created by British-Moroccan artist Yahya. According to RZA and producer Tarik "Cilvaringz" Azzougarh, the plan is to tour it through museums, galleries and festivals, where visitors will be charged a price to listen to the 128-minute, 31 song album on headphones provided by the venue. (Rigorous security checks will discourage the possibility of any illegal recording.)

"We’re about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of [modern] music," RZA said in an interview with Forbes. "We’re making a single-sale collector’s item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king." After the tour is over, the group will make the album available for purchase for a price "in the millions."

The project dates back to 1997, when Cilvaringz hopped on stage during a Wu-Tang show in Amsterdam. From there, he maintained a correspondence with RZA and eventually broached the idea of producing a new album in the late 2000s. "It took a long time," Cilvaringz said to Forbes. "After five years, I’m sitting here and I’m like, 'Am I really going to release this record and see it die after a week?'" He and RZA came up with the concept for the album's release, which is still in the planning stages as no exhibition dates have been confirmed.

Regardless of how it turns out—Cilvaringz acknowledges in the interview that the whole thing could turn into a bust—you could never accuse Wu-Tang for lack of ambition.

8 Diagrams is very underrated btw. Revisited it recently and aside from 2 or 3 songs it's a very well produced and cohesive effort. Too bad Ghostface appears only on like three songs.

Also, I know it's part of the deal and thus there'll most likely won't be a tracklist for the double album, but it's my feeling, that A Better Tomorrow is the real deal. The double album has Cilvaringz attached to it - he's a "Wu Element", a producer/rapper from Marocco, who had the idea for this only-one-copy-thing and most likely executive produced the whole thing.

I really hope so. The music world is going to get very weird if artists start going exclusive to a particular music service, with no physical CD purchase option, forcing their fans to jump through hoops to get access to their music the legal way. Plus I like my tangible CD collection, that I fucking own. Archiving files on a hard drive, or streaming just isn’t the same.

It's a decent album - very far from great. At 16 tracks, there's plenty of fat that could have been trimmed. The tracks with hooks from the arbitrary R&B vocalists come off as particularly lazy and generic. Dre's production, as always, is very clean and polished; it's a solid foundation to an otherwise flimsy project. Tracks like Genocide, Deep Water, One Shot One Kill, and Animals are great, but you have to sift through a good bit of filler to find the true gems. As a whole, it tries desperately to shine next to Kendrick's 'Good Kid M.A.A.D City', but nothing is nearly as nuanced or endearing as that album. Honestly, even YG's Compton ode 'My Krazy Life', is a better West Coast rap album.

What I really find disheartening is how corporate the whole thing feels. Dre suddenly gets the inspiration to release a new album right around the time a NWA biopic gets released? Right around the time Apple Music gets rolled out? Right around the time West Coast rap sees a rebirth with the likes of Kendrick, YG, Schoolboy Q, etc? The whole thing reeks of a savy businessman being opportunistic, not a music artist feeling inspired to create something new.

Exactly, that's pretty much what I was getting at. The reviews seem to all be, "Yep, Dr. Dre is back and we should be happy". I'm very happy to have a new Dr. Dre album, I'm just not understanding why it hasn't gotten a "full" review yet.

I’d have no problems with that score for The Chronic. The Chronic impeccably typified Gangsta rap and was a blueprint for the G-funk sound. Pretty much a flawless album.

Compton has pretty much zero G-funk going on in it. Instead it sounds like mostly above average hip hop with elements of… trap music, maybe? Compton is good, but it don’t come close to The Chronic.

This album is truly an album in the sense that it's cohesive. Each track continues the story being told. I've listened to it about 20 times already. From start to finish the album is solid. I'm impressed by how much Dr. Dre's rapping has improved. I'm impressed by how pop-savvy these songs are. Some of the songs address the racism and ignorance of black life that Kendrick Lamar dealt with so passionately on his album.

I must say that as a whole, 2001 had more mega great songs. However Compton has several great songs and the others are never below good.

(and the quality of this work is much better than any NIN album Trent Reznor has released in the 21st century [apart from Ghosts])

Yeah, Compton is a grower. I like it a little bit more each time listening through. And it does feel like the tracks flow really well. I particularly like the tracks All In a Day's Work and Darkside/Gone. Hearing the clip of Eazy-E got me (Eazy-E CPT OG from the other side).

I must say that as a whole, 2001 had more mega great songs. However Compton has several great songs and the others are never below good.

Agreed. I think Dre went at 2001 from a business angle. The Chronic was different, it was more from the angle of Dre and his posse raising hell and turning heads, and in the process of doing that they made something truly groundbreaking. By 1999 Dre was long over being a ‘gangsta’ and had gone into businessman mode. I can’t blame him, he saw how that lifestyle turned out for Eazy, Tupac, and Biggie. 2001 felt calculated and designed for more potential hits and a better commercial performance than The Chronic. While 2001 did commercially outperform its predecessor, I still don’t see it being anything really groundbreaking like The Chronic.

I’ll need to give Compton more time to see where it fits in with the other two albums. But it’s still Dre making businessman decisions here. It can’t be just a coincidence that the new album appears out of the blue, and virtually coincides with the film, and the Apple music thing (and an Apple exclusive at that).

(and the quality of this work is much better than any NIN album Trent Reznor has released in the 21st century [apart from Ghosts])

Hip hop can be a difficult production to stack up against. Hip hop albums like Compton have the collaboration and writing and performance of many very talented artists bubbling up to the surface from one track to the next. Creatively and performancewise, Trent works with a few talented people, but he carries the bulk of nin studio albums himself.

What frustrates me most about 'Compton' is that it's not up there with his previous two albums by any stretch, but it's also not bad

Not bad as in...he put this shit together in the span of a year. A YEAR. What the hell does the stuff he's been sitting on for the last 16 sound like, I venture?

There's a good chance he hasn't been composing new material on a consistent basis for the past 16 years. That's part of the problem that meets expectations like you hit with an album release like this.

Also... just saying, there should be a separate thread for the Compton album. We sound like such a band of dorks discussing this album under the banner of a general "rap music" thread.

Mr. Blaileen
08-11-2015, 12:54 AM
Overall, I like 'Compton', but I need to give it a few more listens yet. I think one of the issues this album has is that it's the Chinese Democracy of rap albums, so the hype for it/Detox was sky high. Those expectations were impossible to meet.

I'm not a huge fan of some of the guests on the album, but none of them are that bad, either. The beats are rich, luscious, and are sometimes more interesting than the vocalists themselves. I wish the album had more of that G-funk rap sound, but maybe Dre wasn't feeling that stuff so much as a 50 year old man. Who knows.

Overall, I like it.

I don’t listen to much modern hip hop so I don’t really even know much about the artist it features. I also think it would have been great if some of the old guard had been more front and center on Compton. But using today’s stars is probably Dre’s way of keeping this album relevant to a 2015 audience, and if this is indeed his last album it may be his way of passing the torch.

I also miss those G-funk groves. I know we’re 20+ years removed from the early 90’s, but G-funk was the Compton sound, like Grunge was the Seattle sound. Not to detract from what he did with this album, which is pretty good, but calling the album Compton when it doesn’t have that sound is a little bit weird for me. What if Nirvana had put out its third and final album, calling it Seattle, but when you listened, it was a Post-metal album with little to no Grunge sound? I guess it shouldn’t matter if it’s a good album, but it would still be weird to me.

Since I didn't see a thread in Le Cinema, just got back from Straight Outta Compton. If you're a fan- go see it. Great casting and moved really well for a nearly 2.5 hour movie. Nothing earth shattering as far as revealing things, just entertaining.

Yep, it's pretty great, as far as biopics go. Quite a fine display of vintage 80s–90s recording gear, too (sadly, they used historically inauthentic LED lighting fixtures for the big stage performance scenes).

i didn't catch that- I saw standard "wall of bulbs" against the back of the stage.

One inacuracy I caught was during the open scene of 1986 Eazy- his vintage Chicago White Sox hat. Pretty sure the Sox didn't have that merchandise until very late 80's or 1990, could be wrong though.

I was reading that Compton (the album) had been streamed 25 million times in its first week. Also that the album sold half a million downloads through iTunes. If accurate, that seems like a solid debut. I like the album, but I still refuse to buy it unless I can get it as a CD.

After listening to it for awhile now, Compton has grown on me a lot. I'm not sure why, but it took me a little bit to get used to the vocals. They sounded weird to me for some reason when I first heard the album. I got over that, and I've come to enjoy a lot of the features on the album. Kendrick Lamar crushes it on all of the songs he appears in. I don't really listen to The Game, but I really liked his performance on 'Just Another Day'.

The only songs I'm 'meh' about are 'Issues', 'For the Love of Money', and 'Animals'.

It's a shame this is Dre's last album.

To me its the surprise album of the year since I had no idea Chuck D released the album.

I am surprised how much I like the new Game album. I never thought much of him as a rapper. His voice is cool but his lyrics never transcended very high and he would constantly name drop. It's as if he heard the Kendrick album, and the Compton album and thought.... Maybe I should do it like that. Whatever he did, it worked because it is good.

What's everyone think of the new Drake LP??

This thing is soooooo long but it's really REALLY good. Surprisingly not anywhere near as much filler as you'd expect with a nearly 90 minute album. The track with Future is straight heat, tho.

Honestly between Drake, Bey, Kanye, and Kendrick all putting out fantastic records in just the first FOUR(!!!) months of the year, this is shaping up to be one of the strongest years for hip hip and R&B in a looong time.

I could count the number of "hip-hop artists" in the modern day that I actually give a fuck about on one hand. Kendrick, Joey Badass, Freddie Gibbs, maybe a few others. Everything today gets compared to the 90s scene I grew up on and very few can even approach the level of talent the 90s generation routinely displayed.

Yachty is alright. I haven't heard a whole lot of his stuff and that song you posted doesn't really do anything for me, but its by no means the worst thing out there today.

To be fair, I've never been much of a Fat Joe fan. I have his first two records and they're both underground classics, but the video you posted is from his third record, when he started sounding way too commercialized and studio-fabricated. I didn't care for that song at the time and it does nothing for me now. No grit or rawness to it; he's just tailgating with Puffy and Mase in the late-90s at that point.

But if we're talking about Jealous One's Envy-era Joe, then yea...he's killing Yachty and pretty much everything else I'm hearing today, save for Kendrick..

Im not a real Joe fan outside of tunes he's a guest on. I really like that song because of Nas, Pun and Raekwon being on it. Apparently Nas rewrote his verse after hearing Pun. Most Joe verses Im familiar with are from DITC. Such as this gem... although Big L always stole the show. hmm Big L and all that could have been.

No one thought it would be this big though! She's very nice and has worked hard to get here. Also the rhythm of it I guess you would say? I'm not even sure how to describe it, but I'm talking about the way the flow kind of "dances" around the beat and bars start earlier or later than it seems like they're supposed to and like run longer than you would expect- it's nuts.

Since Kill Shot was a big thing this past week (both in the Eminem thread and Internet), list your favorite/best diss songs:

1) 2Pac’s Hit ‘Em Up (nothing else to say here- the diss is great and love the beat. The shit-talking in this one is phenomenal)
2) Ice Cube’s No Vasoline (tells it like it is/how he feels, and a good reminder of how he’s one of the best ever)

Eminems “Girls” on The D12 album is really fucking good too. Reminder to myself to revisit the Jay-Z and Nas thing.

Nas - Ether (Can't have a diss track list w/o this classic)

2Pac - Against All Odds (Underrated Diss track)
Westside Connection - Cross 'Em Out and Put a 'K (Don't piss off Ice Cube!)

Common - The Bitch in Yoo (But if you are gonna respond to Ice Cube, this is how it's done!)

JayZ - Blueprint 2 (actually a really good response to Nas' Ether calling out alot of obvious hypocrisy)

I was at home sick this week and went down a youtube hole trying to understand, and cringe at new young rappers... much of this included watching a lot of No Jumper vlog. Something I noticed is that most of these rappers don't really perform their material live. Their DJ plays the album tracks and they just selectively yell or sing a long to their vocal tracks. It's like bad karaoke..... and most of them perform like this. The young audiences don't seem to mind. Am I old and out of touch? or is it the children who are wrong?

I have not been keeping up with the hip hop scene, but I am reviving this thread because the one about a certain song with a NIN sample (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/5456-Lil-Nas-X-samples-34-Ghosts-IV-Old-Town-Road) seems to be getting a bit off topic.

I'm a little put off by a recent trend in mainstream hip hop. A trend dominated by young men with face tattoos, short dreadlocks/braids (bright colors optional), short songs with laughable lyrics that make Kanye sound like a scholar, beats that are almost trap, vocals that at times barely even sound like rapping, etc. Most of it can be classified as "mumble rap" with 6ix9ine and Lil Pump being notable examples or rappers in the trend (the former has been getting lots of media attention lately, to the point where I could no longer ignore his existence).

This post is not to bash modern hip hop, but to ask how to get past the crap that's dominating the mainstream. Where do you go to discover better hip hop that doesn't get as much commercial recognition? Preferably relatively new artists (from the mid-00s and later). Most of you appear to have dug beneath the surface quite a while ago, citing performers to counter claims that hip hop is as bad as the mainstream is making it appear.

Where do you go to discover better hip hop that doesn't get as much commercial recognition?

I listen to a lot of podcasts and interviews. I'll usually check out someone I'm not familiar with if brought up by another musician/artist. Down the rabbit hole...

If you're looking for a (relatively) mainstream and accessible rapper with talent, J. Cole has been killing it for over a decade now.

Meek Mill is a popular mainstream rapper who has a traditional flow you would probably like. He trend hops with those flows you don't like with certain songs and those are generally cringey, but the lion's share of his work is solid rap with a traditional flow.

Your Old Droog just dropped a new album out of nowhere. Very old school sounding. Here's a track with Doom from it:

imo one of the best rappers this decade has been billy woods. He recently released an album called Hiding Places. Here's a video off it:

I've been listening to Jpeg Mafia lately. I really love his Veteran album. I did'nt even know that he was on tour with Vince Staples until like a week after they had done a show that was nearby me. And coachella is waaaay too expensive.

I miss rap groups. It’s mostly all solo stuff now with half-assed collaborations , and everyone and their great grandmother is a “producer”.

5. Iron Man (Ghostface)

They were fucking awesome last night but Method Man was a no show for reasons unknown. So, that part was disappointing but if you get 8 out of 9/10 members of the Clan, its a good night. If you are going and want the limited city specific shirts in Large or XL, you should probably get there early as the Boston shirts sold out pretty quickly. They went on around 9:15ish. All of 36 Chambers and some of the usual solo stuff. ODB's son was a highlight (Brooklyn Zoo). Such a great night.

This is so hard. Wu-Tang Forever, Tical, Ironman, Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars, Supreme Clientele, Bulletproof Wallets, Heavy Mental & The Swarm are all riiiiiiight there for me after #5.

I saw Snoop Dogg and Ice-T last night (with a guest appearance of Warren G) and all I can say is if the Snoop Dogg & Friends tour is coming anywhere near you, GO. Easily one of the most fun shows I have ever gone to.

It’s been 10 years- Lollapalooza 2009- since I saw Snoop my first and only time and agreed. Dude knows how to throw a party. Was awesome, and I never saw a bigger crowd than him before (The Killers were the headliner that night). Can’t even imagine how empty the north end of Grant Park was that day, don’t remember who was playing at the time.

Looking forward to the new Danny Brown. The 2 singles he has out are good. QTip produced a lot of it from what I understand.

The new Conway is out but I havent listened to it yet. Those Griselda guys are seriously saturating the market.
