It will premiere on PBS in September 2017.

The playlist discovered on John Crawford's Spotify playlist here: https://play.spotify.com/user/johnkraw/playlist/4sEW8tCPsKapD5tqAmCI0J lists the artists as TR / AR along with track names and lengths. The album is titled Vietnam WIP 2-5-16. Being dated back in February makes sense seeing as the series will be a "10 part, 18 hour documentary series." Who knows what stage it's in now.

Yo-Yo Ma will be performing as part of The Silk Road Ensemble (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silkroad_(arts_organization)#The_Silk_Road_Ensembl e) for this (I'm a nerd)! The ensemble is always evolving and can be rather large.

I had the honor & pleasure of seeing Mr. Burns speak in Aspen over the summer to a very small crowd of maybe 100-ish people. He was doing a special presentation that related to the election, and so he showed clips from his various docs that had to do with the elections of the given era. Ken is fiercely intelligent and well spoken. I highly recommend looking up his Stanford Commencement speech if you haven't seen it.

After the presentation, he did a Q&A. I so, so wish I knew he was a fan of Trent & Atticus's work, otherwise I would've asked him about that. Then again, how could I have known? Instead, I asked what it was like to be such a direct influence for Christopher Nolan and Interstellar. He was very gracious. While I asked my question, he leaned forward, listening intently, and made sustained eye contact. When answering, he spoke directly to me – and somewhere in his answer he mentioned the Vietnam doc (and no joke, probably 8 or 9 other films that are simultaneously in the works).

I also spoke to him very briefly at the small reception that followed. He's a deeply kind, deeply respectful man. It was an honor. I admire him even more now knowing that he sought out Trent & Atticus! Amazing!! I absolutely cannot wait for the full Vietnam doc.

Well shit, I have no idea what to expect from this one! could be very interesting mix of music to fit all the themes involved with a documentary of this caliber. In terms of war, machinery, bombing and creating sounds for fear and chaos...I imagine sounds from Broken or Tetsuo. But creating sounds for calm scary surreal moments, sounds from Social Network/TGWTDT would fit super well.

So much new NIN/Reznor/Ross content coming out! it's getting hard to sit, enjoy, and absorb everything! Have barely had a chance to listen to all the new DE re-releases, and NTAE!

You can already hear some of the sampling of bombs and helicopters used in the soundtrack in this preview. I am very, very interested in this.

AFAIK it will be like Burns' other documentaries and debut on PBS. HOWEVER, there is recent precedent (OJ Made in America-5 parts, 7 hours) for showing a long documentary briefly in a couple theaters to qualify for the Oscars.

This is just a semantics thing. Technically, all documentaries are films; the way it is edited does not change that fact. A TV series is an entirely different animal.

Its awesome when TR crosses over into things im already excited for, like El-Ps Ill Sleep When Your Dead and the theme for Black Ops 2.

I love Burns' The War and The Civil War series was what got me into documentaries when I was younger. I haven't bought a score since TGWTDT, but ill probably pick this one up along with the inevitably expensive blu-rays of the show itself.

well, wendy carlos was using electronic instrumentation for a WHILE before this came out. i would say A Clockwork Orange (which came out in 1972) is a better example of a major film using electronics for score.

You know, it sounded weird to me, but I had a bit of an epiphany: I was watching a recent doc about the Oklahoma City Bombing and a lot of the music sounded like it could have been TR+AR.
And it occurred to me that Trent and Co aren't cutting edge young artists anymore and those of us who grew up listening to OG nin are getting old!
That being said, I do think that TR+AR are largely responsible for creating the current trend of electronic scores. It's just that the industry is catching up.

I get fucking goosebumps hearing Ken Burns speak about the music of Trent and Atticus: it's a titan of one field recognizing the titans of another, and I'll always be so moved by that. Just wanted to point out that for anyone who preordered at PBS.org back when this first went up... they have discounted the price of all of the packages. You may want to cancel and re-order. (Bluray Package was $125 when I ordered initially and is currently $100)

i went to a barnes & noble on the release date for before the flood last year. as is now obvious, that didn't go so well. i at least got a kick out of the angry middle aged man working there alone bizarrely repeating back the title to me but continually mispronouncing "flood" (like food with an L) and then getting highly defensive when he thought i suggested he didn't know the word.

i thought as consolation at least i would eventually get the film on blu-ray, but alas that was not to be either. we see here the difference between PBS and natgeo.

Your email confirmation of the order should also state that it was the score, I'd think.

From what I've seen, this entry always had "soundtrack" in the title. You must have really been in there early if it had anything else. Immediately following the nin.com entry, my first look was on Amazon and never saw a score listing.

As seen in this thread though, the announcement about the configuration and details of the soundtrack and score was not announced until Aug. 18. Neither you nor anyone else posted about the Amazon listing that apparently went live on Aug. 7 when you got your e-mail. It sounds like they may have initially put in details for the score, but changed the listing to the soundtrack, once the full details were released.

So, if you look at your Amazon orders (https://www.amazon.com/orders), and the item in your order links to the Soundtrack page (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074NLPZW9), then congratulations, you'll be getting a copy of the soundtrack. Of course, if it originally said the score when you ordered and and it says soundtrack now, then, of course, Amazon will accommodate your complaint, but you will still have to deal with that return shit.

Listened to it on Spotify at 7am this morning, while sat alone beside a Turkish swimming pool will probably count as the weirdest first listen to a Reznor project for me!

If you consider the "rules" of the Null numbers, I don't think it's actually Gone Girl, because that was released solely by Columbia, Nullco wasn't involved at all. I've seen other people speculate that Null 03 might be Juno instead, because that was released by Nullco (The Null Corporation II specifically).

But it's all arbitrary unless Trent, by some miracle, decides to announce it. You could probably assume either one.

I can't STAND when shows or films use score pieces from other films that were made specifically for those films. I really wish they hadn't used the TSN and Dragon Tattoo tracks.

Also not a big fan of the music editing... There were 2-3 points where they started 'Less Likely' from the beginning, played for a minute and then it went to the next scene...few minutes later...started 'Less Likely' again at the exact same beginning cue...played for a minute...next scene. Seemed very lazy and phoned in.

I thought the first episode was GREAT!! Ken Burns is my favorite documentary film guy and anytime THAT guy produces a war documentary, I'm in 100%. His Civil War doc is on my shelf and I've watched the whole thing MANY times. The fact that Trent and Atticus are doing the score is just a HUGE bonus for me.

For those wanting nothing but brand new TR AR tunes...this isn't some average 2 hour movie that'll be in the discount dvd bin at walmart in a year. It's an 18 hour "definitive" account of that conflict and that era. Considering the length of the film, you're going to hear the same some a few times...and considering the importance of a project like this, TR probably said "Use anything you want!!"

it's three (sturdy cardstock(?)) picture sleeves in a sturdy outer slipcase. side F is blank but still has an image printed label. nothing too fancy but a vast improvement over, say, the fragile deviations.

it also sounds pristine, just like all the recent pressings.

I think it was a genuine price mistake. Best buy has on occasion cancelled orders with pricing mistakes, but for the most part, they have honored the orders. (in my experience, anyway.)

One listen in, some of it falls in with GG and GWTDT but then some of it is more aggressive and creepy sounding than most of the songs on either of those. It would be interesting for Trent and Atticus to score a horror movie.

Regarding the Best Buy listing, the UPC on it matches what is on Discogs for the 3LP set, so it is very likely that. Also, I don't think the soundtrack release is getting a vinyl pressing, just the 2CD is all I've seen. I guess we'll find out is they honor the price or not.

this is my favorite soundtrack that has come from TR+AR. There are moments that remind me of dragon tattoo without sounding too familiar, and some songs have a year zero vibe and some that have a fragile deviations era sound. vietnam is probably the most NIN sounding score yet.

Strangers in Lockstep is my favorite - so far. The little bleep/glitch @ :46 is also very interesting. I envision an army of robots marching on the battlefield to this song.

Before and After Faith is also very good, great pace, and sonically different than the other songs on this score.

Also Torn Polaroid is very interesting, at about 3:53 this low hum starts in the back ground - very interesting sounds.

Overall, if I were to describe this score in one word, I would say... somber. I don't think that's a bad thing, I wasn't alive during that era, and have only started to learn more about it thru the current PBS documentary. I honestly wasn't expecting the score to be this gloomy, or somber, but... the airing isn't over yet, so I'll reserve any further judgement! :)

The vinyl jacket is thick, sturdy and well-made, suitable for holding 3 heavyweight LPs. As are the inner record sleeves.

In other words, Trent and Craw likely weren't anywhere near this one from a preparation standpoint..
