View Full Version : 31 Days of Prince

Working title for now because he was prolific as fuck.

We had 29 Days of Bowie so it's only fitting we devote next month or so to Prince. Who's with me?

I didn't do the Bowie thing because it was just too depressing to me but fuck it, I'm in on this one. When do we want to start, and what should the schedule be? He was disturbingly prolific.

May 1st would be the best time to start. Prince released 39 albums so it would definitely go past the end of month, heh.

Since I feel like this is the thread to post these kinds of things since the Dead Souls thread is more general, this whole performance is legendary and Prince's solo is just God-level stuff:

I'll just go ahead and get one of his most popular and bad ass performances out of the way right now. EPIC guitar solo. AND WHERE DOES THE GUITAR GO AT THE END???

R.I.P. to one of the few musicians more diverse and talented than Trent. A true legend of music. Damn shame to lose him so young. And damn glad I took my mom and finally saw him live a few years ago.

I'm in. I won't write reviews like I did with the Bowie thing as that was too much for me towards the end as I found myself breaking down in tears after finishing *.

Are you counting the downloadable albums & NPG albums? and side projects like Madhouse, or albums like Xpectation, The Chocolate Invasion, or Slaughterhouse or C Note.

For real, this motherfucker was too prolific. I think we should really figure out if we want to try and cover all album-length releases or just his main albums, and if we want to maybe condense some discussions into the same day or if we should do all of them a day at a time.

MTV actually stopped playing garbage to play Prince videos. It's pretty great. Watch if you can.

His legendary Halftime show (if anyone can find a higher quality version of this, I'd love to have it):

http://www.veoh.com/watch/v6330047nSFChkNw

And personally I'm very cool with doing a day straight through the main 39 but it'd be cool to maybe condense a bit so that we can fit in some of the more noteworthy side projects. But I'm up for whatever everyone else decides.

marodi

I'm in for whatever you decide. I missed on Bowie but I'm not missing this.

I just hope it's the last one we'll do in a very very very long time with someone who just died.

The Madhouse albums 8, 16 he did in the time period of Sign O' The Times with Sheila E. I think should count
The NGP album Exodus should be considered
the C Note album Chocolate Invasion, Slaughterhouse, One Night Alone are albums that should be considered
Xpectation was a masterpiece

I think the best way to do 31 days of Prince, rather than go through the albums chronologically I think the members here should just post whatever they are feeling at the time. This way we can learn from each others knowledge of his music and turn on each other to aspects of his music that some of us might not be aware of. Thats my two cents plus maybe somebody might not be around for Sign O The Times day.

If you count NPG, studio albums come to 39. Madhouse would make it 41.

thevoid99
04-21-2016, 05:19 PM
Can we make a schedule of what we should listen to? I'm not sure if I have all of his albums or some of the bootlegs. Besides, does anyone know if those Prince-Miles Davis bootlegs are around somewhere?

Lerxto
04-21-2016, 05:38 PM
I don't think we could do it in 31 days if we do it like 29 Days of Bowie.
We'd have to do multiple albums in one day to make it work.
My list looks like this:

1. For You/Prince
2. Dirty Mind/Controversy
3. 1999
4. Purple Rain
5. Around The World In A Day/The Flesh
6. Parade
7. Sign O' The Times/Dream Factory
8. Lovesexy
9. Batman/Graffiti Bridge
10. Diamonds And Pearls
11. Love Symbol Album/Goldnigga
12. Come/The Black Album
13. The Gold Experience
14. Chaos And Disorder/Exodus
15. Emancipation
16. Crystal Ball/The Truth/Kamasutra
17. Newpower Soul/The Vault
18. Rave Un2/In2 The Joy Fantastic
19. The Rainbow Children
20. Xpectation/C-Note/N.E.W.S
21. The Chocolate Invasion/The Slaughterhouse
22. Musicology
23. 3121/Planet Earth
24. Lotusflow3r/MPLSound/Elixer
25. 20Ten/PLECTRUMELECTRUM
26. Art Official Age
27. HitnRun Phase One & Two
28. Single-Only Songs (B-Sides and songs like F.U.N.K., S.S.T/Brand New Orleans, Something In The Water 2013 etc)
28. The Time Albums
29. Purple Proteges (Sheila E., Tamar, Ingrid, Mayte, Madhouse, Chaka Khan, and any other song he wrote/produced for other artists)
30. Live Bootlegs: Small Club, Sign O' The Times Rehearsals, Aftershows, Soundboard recordings, Birthday Shows, First Avenue.. any favorite live bootleg you choose.
31. Studio Bootlegs(Unreleased Songs): Witness 4 The Prosecution, Moonbeam Levels, Empty Room (1985), We Can Funk (1982), etc.

But I still can't believe we're doing this. I'm devastated.
I can't listen to any of his songs now, especially songs like Sometimes It Snows In April. 2016 could be the worst year of my life.

Your Name Here you could always create a dropbox folder and send out PMs, but otherwise I don't know.

For those struggling to find a way to listen to his music, it may not be ideal but the streaming service Tidal has pretty much the vast majority of his catalog that's publicly available and you can get free trials for it (there's a 90-day one where you don't have to give any payment info which is pretty sweet).
elevenism since you expressed your love for the Batman soundtrack elsewhere I felt like you'd get a kick out of knowing that Batdance was played up loud in my house last night; that was also my intro to Prince as a huge Batman fan as a kid and it all happened from thereon for me.

By the way it is so easy to overlook since it's such an obvious hit that it almost feels pointless in saying it but good fucking god, Kiss is just about the best pop song ever. And he almost gave the fucker away! Such a sexy, powerful, straightforward killer of a track. So many of his best songs were sophisticated in their simplicity.

Purple Rain, in my opinion, is the best place to start though albums like 1999 and Dirty Mind are also great starting points. I would also recommend the Hits/B-sides compilation as a nice starting point.

BTW, I finally saw the video for "Let's Pretend We're Married" on BET for the very first time as I never thought he made a video for that song. I fucking love that song and man, Prince was fuckin' hot. I'm sure he had a lot of men question their sexuality back then. The one video of his that I really want to see is for "Automatic". I've been watching Prince videos all day on BET as I still get turned out by that camera shot in the "1999" video of Jill Jones' leg in those lingerie stockings. I'm turned on by any beautiful women in those stockings and she was one of my favorite Prince ladies along with Vanity (R.I.P.), Sheila E., the Diamond & Pearl girls, Mayte (fuckin' gorgeous), and Apollonia. People said the record he made for a lot of those women were odd but I think that's part of his eccentricities and I like that.

Dirty Mind and Controversy are my two favorites but I realize it's probably because I'm old school Prince and I tend to favor the stuff I listened to originally. I still work out to stuff on Controversy (especially Private Joy) and Dirty Mind, they're always on my workout playlist, LOL. But, yes, Purple Rain is a great starting point.

Last summer, I heard "Darling Nikki" blasting from somewhere, and I realized my senior-citizen neighbor, Howard, was cleaning his boat on the driveway getting it ready for the season and he had the Purple Rain Soundtrack blasting on the boat's stereo system, LOL.

Only a man with those big set of balls could do that and open for the Stones and let the people boo him. Earlier today, I was watching CNN/Headline News and one of Prince's ex-girlfriends in former Playboy Playmate Devin Devasquez who went out with Prince for a while as she was the inspiration of the song "Raspberry Beret" as she spoke very kindly of him and talked about his father as she would accompany him to a few events relating to Prince. She still looked good as just seeing her recently on TV had me watch this infamous clip from Married... with Children:

To me, the truly legendary shit begins with 1999. Everything from For You to Controversy is still really good, but those albums are just a little bit patchy for me. Some good songs, some not so great songs. They're still totally worth listening to though, cause there's a number of awesome tracks from that era.

But as soon as you get to 1999, holy shit, it's like a switch flipped in his brain. That's the album where he leveled up, where he reached the god-level status. It's huge and ambitious, and yet it's still totally solid and consistent. Not a single weak track, imo. I can throw that album on and it's just like bam bam bam, one mind blowing song after another.

Thanks!

There are two really amazing parts in this article. First, this basically sums up how a lot of twin cities people feel right now...

"I think it helped everyone around. It made us all think that Minneapolis wasn't the dour town that we tried to pretend it was. He was like a ray of light in a very cautious place. He was a star. He made no bones about it. He was glitz to a place that wasn't used to it."

And then this image is absolutely incredible, lol...

"That's the treasure that we got, to be able to sit in the big atrium where you're taking a break and Prince shuffles by in his slippers and makes some popcorn in the microwave."

People like to paint him as a reclusive this or that; I think he was genuinely truly, truly shy. But one thing says a lot about him: I was there making a solo record a few years later, and I got a message that said that my friend had just died. I was truly rattled, and the next time I went back into the studio, he had filled it up with balloons. Now I'm gonna cry.

eulogy from Frank Ocean...pardon the all-caps that's how he wrote it:

I’M NOT EVEN GONNA SAY REST IN PEACE BECAUSE IT’S BIGGER THAN DEATH. I NEVER MET THE MAN (I WAS TOO NERVOUS THE ONE TIME I SAW HIM) AND I NEVER SAW HIM PLAY LIVE, REGRETTABLY. I ONLY KNOW THE LEGENDS I’VE HEARD FROM FOLKS AND WHAT I’VE HEARD AND SEEN FROM HIS DEEP CATALOG OF PROPELLANT, FEARLESS, VIRTUOSIC WORK. MY ASSESSMENT IS THAT HE LEARNED EARLY ON HOW LITTLE VALUE TO ASSIGN TO SOMEONE ELSE’S OPINION OF YOU.. AN INFECTIOUS SENTIMENT THAT SEEMED SOAKED INTO HIS CLOTHES, HIS HAIR, HIS WALK, HIS GUITAR AND HIS PRIMAL SCREAM. HE WROTE MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME, ‘WHEN YOU WERE MINE’. IT’S A SIMPLE SONG WITH A SIMPLE MELODY THAT MAKES YOU WISH YOU THOUGHT OF IT FIRST, EVEN THOUGH YOU NEVER WOULD HAVE – A FLIRTATIOUS BRAND OF GENIUS THAT FEELS APPROACHABLE. HE WAS A STRAIGHT BLACK MAN WHO PLAYED HIS FIRST TELEVISED SET IN BIKINI BOTTOMS AND KNEE HIGH HEELED BOOTS, EPIC. HE MADE ME FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH HOW I IDENTIFY SEXUALLY SIMPLY BY HIS DISPLAY OF FREEDOM FROM AND IRREVERENCE FOR OBVIOUSLY ARCHAIC IDEAS LIKE GENDER CONFORMITY ETC. HE MOVED ME TO BE MORE DARING AND INTUITIVE WITH MY OWN WORK BY HIS DEMONSTRATION – HIS DENIAL OF THE PREVAILING MODEL…HIS FIGHT FOR HIS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY – ‘SLAVE’ WRITTEN ACROSS THE FOREHEAD, NAME CHANGED TO A SYMBOL… AN ALL OUT REBELLION AGAINST EXPLOITATION. A VANGUARD AND GENIUS BY EVERY METRIC I KNOW OF WHO AFFECTED MANY IN A WAY THAT WILL OUTRUN OBLIVION FOR A LONG WHILE. I’M PROUD TO BE A PRINCE FAN(STAN) FOR LIFE.

I love 1999, too. I think he was evolving the whole time, with each album.

Oh man now we gotta hear us some DMSR from 1999

My fav!!

I've always loved how this one and "Automatic" are really long and come right after each other. The way the funk just goes on and on almost makes it cross over into a psychedelic thing. If these were three minute pop songs, it wouldn't be the same. They're almost like those repetitive/druggy techno jams, except way better.

The whole album is just incredible.

Yeah, it's been up since he passed away; I think now that he isn't constantly monitoring things on YouTube, videos will now be more available (since they are actually positive publicity leading to more record sales, something he never seemed to understand).

Meanwhile, this is friggin' HILARIOUS:

key revelation: Prince has 50 music videos to songs the public has never heard locked away in a vault. I guessed his reasoning was that sometime in the future, maybe after he had passed on, these music videos and songs would be released to the public.

Or, in his case, his cremains, since he has already been cremated.

Prince stated in interviews that he fully expected the stuff in "the vault" to eventually be released, probably not by him; in other words, probably by his Estate. The Estate will be overseen by those designated in the appropriate documents, probably lawyers.

And this musician is supposedly the 1st to report Prince's death, not for money: https://twitter.com/ZMyersOfficial/status/723188933228670976

This is "Get Wild" from the NPG album "Exodus" probably the best band Prince ever put together Michael Bland his drummer is insane. This is a rare video so watch before it gets pulled down. At this time Prince was still battling Warner Brothers so he wore a scarf over his face and on the album he is referred to as "Tora Tora" on the album credits.

Wow, this video is so fucking great. Damn.

Years back, I spent a couple years working in a recording studio (before I eventually gave on that line of work and completely switched gears) and I actually got to meet some of the guys from the New Power Generation. All those guys still do a lot of session work in the twin cities area, so it's actually not that uncommon to bump into them. I didn't really get to know most of them that well, but I did get to know Michael Bland, and he was such a great guy. He had a real knack for storytelling, and had so many great Prince stories from back in the day. I really think he could write a Questlove-style tell-all book about everything that happened and it would be an incredible book. A lot of the NPG members struck me as slightly bitter about the way things went with the band, but Michael seemed pretty unphased about it all. He had a really objective perspective on things, where he could appreciate people for who they were, flaws and all, which is one of the reason his stories were so good. He just told like it was, and he seemed to have a lot of genuine insight on Prince, and also just on people in general. One of the coolest people I've ever met in my life.

Michael Bland I think was Prince's best drummer. Nothing against Bobby Z or Sheila E but he can play the fuck out of those drums. Plus, I'm glad he would play with another Minneapolis band in Soul Asylum.

Hello. The Glam Slam 94 Link is gone- do you still have it? I had the opportunity to meet Prince. It changed a lot for me. I just put this together for the org. I'll post it here in case any of you were there- it's long. Meeting Prince... Twice. Searching 4 new friends:So I'm not a stranger to the org... But not at all an obvious member or poster. I wrote this in advance- so I may appear as a just created new account. I can't remember whether I posted as "gasm, gasmband, or Adam411." Anyways...
I'm back- seeking to re-connect with others who were there with me- which seems impossible. The following is in extreme detail as I journal entried immediately and more. A recount of the NPGMC Soundcheck Access.
March 5th, 2002- Columbus Nite- Ohio Theatre- Tuesday: At 5:45 Jason and I were let into soundcheck. We sat front row. As Prince was finishing he asked "What time is it?" To which I excitedly yelled "Time is a trick." Prince said "yeah but if we go over it costs money." We yelled "we got your back." I said "Who needs college?" Prince responded with "?"... And he comes over and sits down directly in front of us- "I couldn't hear you" he says. And then it was on. He started a discussion with the group of us. I asked him about- Paisley Jams, last show." "This is the best." Which guitar was his favorite. He had his Ibanez brought over and showed it to me. George Benson had signed it and written something on the back of it to him. As he was showing us the guitar I gave my purple guitar pick to him- he gave it back to me and said "Kryptonite." I asked what type of pick do you use- he said "My own." Everyone laughed. I asked how long the recording process took for TRC? He said "2 days." I asked about how I always see people taping him- including at this moment- he said yeah- theyre his people watching how the lights look. September 11th and not being scared. God. I said- "When I have my concert, you can come and we'll do this." Prince laughed. Some guy said he only believed in himself- "Bobism." Prince laughed and asked about it. I asked "Do you check the site?" "All the time." He replied. Any time there was a moment of silence that I thought Prince might leave or noboby was saying anything- I asked a question. Oh well. It paid off later. I asked about whether theyd be back to Ohio after the next show and he said "We have 2 do Europe." I told Prince he should have contest jam and he invited us to camp out at Paisley. How is Larry Graham? Prince said "He's here in spirit." Also when Prince said it costed money I yelled out about needing to save a little for t-shirts. Before the show- after soundcheck- I looked over and Mani was walking by- I yelled to her, and she came over like an angel and met us and was the sweetest ever. She gave us both a hug and thanked us for coming out. She smelled amazing- best perfume ever. I think she had a red dress on. I think. Jason gave Mani an invitation to our "After, After, Party." (Mellow, Mellow) She took it and said she'd show P. Also during soundcheck- Prince asked about my fur coat- if it was real. (It wasn't) The incredible fan guitar player who tore up When You Were Mine as Prince sat in the audience. Prince said he'd meet with him after the show to give him a guitar lesson. As we were beginning to be lead out of soundcheck- I stood up and saw Prince's white and purple guitar pick- He was back on stage- I said "Hey your pick- I don't want to steal it." He said "Keep it." Like obviously he left it because of mine I tried to give him that he gave back. (I still have both) After the full concert- I hung out with John Blackwell for awhile. Got his autograph. Met Maceo Parker and talked with him. Got his autograph. Saw Rhonda but she was on a mission and we did'nt get to talk with her. And I'm writing this at 1:11am in The Brickyard Parking Lot where I'm waiting for Prince to get here. The official after party spot. I didn't get in because I wasnt 21 but did tape P arriving. Prince also asked me if we were coming to Columbus in a few days- obviously I said yes- even though I didn't have a ticket at the time.
March 10th, 2002- Cleaveland Nite- Palace Theatre- Sunday: Once again... it was on. We were let into soundcheck and sat in front. Najee had just joined so they were foolin' around, not like the last soundcheck. P saw Jason and I and me in my fur coat again- and came over to us- again. Someone asked where Prince got the mercedes grill from. He replied- "Your Mom." It was fun. Dude next to me asked which superhero was Prince's favorite? "I don't believe in superhero's." Prince said. Prince and Michael Jackson were originally supposed to work on the Batman album together. Half and half. Jason replied "Bad idea." So there we were- chillin' with Prince- again- 4ft away. Jason asked if this show would be better than Columbus? Prince said "Way better." Jason said "Hard to do." Prince said "Wanna bet?!" When Najee did a quick little number- we said "He's hired." Prince later asked during the show- "Am I hired?" I asked Prince if they were going to be selling the symbol guitar- like they did the cloud. He said "No. When people learn to play better." Someone asked about the new, new album- when we'd get it. Prince said "they'd just finished up the packaging- so- soon." I talked to Billy Sparks again. Before the show I met Takumi and introduced myself. I talked with him about how he got his job. He doesnt play any instruments at all. The show was so better than Columbus- which was so freaking awesome. After the show I met Renato Neto. We talked with him for awhile. He's from Brazil. He had a 3pc jass band in L.A. before this. Jason and I met 2 beautiful girls who ended up meeting everyone with us. Rachel and Tia. I gave Renato a picture of myself with my blue cloud guitar and on the back was a thank you message to Prince and everyone for the Columbus events. He said thanks and that he would show it to everyone for me. Talked with Prince's D.J. Dustin a.k.a. D.J. Dudley. He made Ahdio Show 10. After the show we met Najee and Rhonda. We were in this basement corridor with a funky cage at the end of it- anyone remember that? Prince asked if Jason and I would be at The Celebration? Invited us to come. He asked the audience who else should be at The Celebration? I suggested "Al Jarreau." Last thing- Jason and I both said we'd be at The Celebration. I thanked Prince for coming over to us again. He said "Your'e welcome."
So- I write this in hopes that anyone else who remembers this or more- or is in pictures with me outside of the venue- I remember taking pictures with other fans outside prior and thinking how are you going to get these cameras inside? Youre gonna have to put them in the car. Anyways- best concert nights of my life. And I had attended other Prince shows prior.
Last thing about me. Im 35 now. I really got into Prince in the late 90's - when I desparately wanted the song I saw in Showgirls. "Ripopgodazippa." Which lead me to Crystal Ball. A short year later- I had everything that could be purchased- an insane collection of the rarest things etc. I just fell in love with his whole catalog. Npg Member 4 Life. Etc. I remember how exciting those days were in the early 2000's with the club. And new tracks. This sucks so much that he is gone. And just once I'd like to turn on any news blibb about his passing and hear something other than the obvious- In my mind I hear "Madrid 2 Chicago" or "Joy In Repetition" from Emancipation Celebration- the list goes on.
Hope to make new friends- again. Adam S.

It took me ages, because TBQH I have many other artists I've followed much more religiously....but every now and then during the last decade or so I'd occasionally go and discover a new album. To this day I haven't gone past Chaos And Disorder (which I actually quite like despite a lot of badmouthing, it seems), but I'm going to be taking that plunge mighty soon, I think...as well as a plunge into unreleased tracks, which always seemed like a daunting task.

PS: The Gold Experience is fucking phenomenal. I don't know what happened, but of his 90's works I've listened to, that thing is far and away a cut above (not to disparage anything else). I do remove the NPG Operator interludes from my tracklist though. :p

I'm glad he still makes his living as a musician, but it's a bummer that a musician who is that fucking good has been stuck doing session work for Mandy Moore and Nick Jonas. The dude deserves so much better. That said, he's an incredibly happy person who seems to genuinely enjoy his life.

Dirty Mind is hands down my favorite Prince album now. It is so concise, catchy (When You Were Mine, Uptown) and lyrically awesome (Sister). It's the most straightforward album in his discography. I can't stop listening to it.

I would even argue that song for song, it's his best album: strong from start to finish.

For me, I would put after Sign O' the Times since it was made in the 80s and was supposed to come out. After Prince halted its release in favor of Lovesexy as the album wouldn't see the light of day until 7 years later. The album however was bootlegged as there were several pressings of it and many, including the hardcore Prince fans, got the album and often had it as the best album of 1988. By the time it was released officially in 1994, it had lost its mystique as Prince was going through one of the most chaotic period in his career in his war with Warner Brothers.

I personally put it after Come, because it was released in November 1994, technically.
But if you care about the originally intended release date you could place it just behind lovesexy, like thevoid99 said.

Question about The Black Album, perhaps @Your Name Here (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=4172) could care to comment: if listening to the studio albums in chronological order, would you place it after Sign o' the Times as it was intended to be released or after Come?
I've always had it placed after SOTT.

I remember buying a cassette bootleg of The Black Album in 1988 at a record fair. It already had a legendary status even then. I marveled at the gritty sound (probably caused by 3rd, 4th or more generation dubs) and the fact that it was something that I was not supposed to have. That tape started my obsession with collecting Prince bootlegs. I have literally hundreds of them now.. It's an illness :)

"Soft and Wet" is the "Head Like a Hole" of For You, i.e. enduring debut album masterpiece.

Right now for this month, I'm doing a series that I called Ranked... as it's just a list of albums by a certain band/artist that I'm going to profile for the month or maybe every few weeks (depending on the artist/band) as Prince is going to be my first subject. I already got through the first 2 albums. From the first album aside from the singles, I like "My Love is Forever" which I think has a lot happening in its mix of genres. From the 2nd album, "Bambi", "With You", and "When We're Dancing Close and Slow". I also forgot that Prince did "I Feel For You" first as that is a great song and I'm glad it became bigger thanks to Chaka Khan whose version I prefer. I already wrote down notes for the 2 albums as well as Dirty Mind which is in my 5 top favorite albums by Prince so far...

Right now, I'm listening to 1999 and then, Purple Rain. Tomorrow, Around the World in a Day and Parade. I just hope I have time to listen to some new music as I'm also writing film reviews and getting ready for my Cannes Film Festival marathon starting next week.

Yeah, Around The World In A Day is up there for me. It's underrated. Pop Life and America are two of my favorites, Paisley Park's a classic too.

Parade's great too, but not as much on there jumps out at me the way many other albums of his do, though I do enjoy Girls and Boys, and 'Sometimes' is the stuff of beauty.

As to the earlier albums, I honestly don't know what I can say about Purple Rain that hasn't been said ad nauseam in a billion other places. It's unfuckwithable. For You - Controversy (ESPECIALLY Controversy's title track) are all fine works too of course, but 1999 is where I really start to get fully on board.

Listening to Controversy today.

implanted_microchip
05-04-2016, 02:43 PM
Controversy is, far and away, in my top three Prince albums. It's electric, it's relentless, it's impossible to resist -- it gets really weird and always takes you back to familiar ground, but in a new and interesting way that recontextualizes it. His lyrics really flourish and the title track alone is so good that I have a hard time listening to the rest because I just keep jumping back to it.

This is where he really mastered the art of longform songs and was able to do 7+ minute songs without them ever feeling the length that they truly are. Without it, 1999 wouldn't be what it is, I don't think. Everything about the title track is flawless to me -- awesome vocals, a deep and infectious groove, lyrics that really sum up so much of what Prince was all about in that time period (and what a lot of people always think of him as). It blends electronic with his gorgeous guitar playing in a beautiful way where nothing clashes and everything just swirls together to create a really, really vivid sonic palette that lets him pluck up whatever color he wants and blends it into the overall picture. It blends sexuality, race, religion and societal pressure all together in a way none of his past songs had, and feels extremely representative of Prince's overall body of work in that respect. It just goes in whatever direction it feels like, formless and structureless and not lacking at all because of it, and it demonstrates immediately and clearly that Prince is capable of a lot more experimentation and diversion from tradition than his past two albums showed.

It's smarter than Dirty Mind was but still just as cheeky and willing to flirt around, full of humor and tongue-in-cheek lyrics but with a more meaningful bent in a lot of places. It really starts to look at society outwardly which Prince was always great at, and I can't think of anyone else being able to get away with something like Ronnie, Talk to Russia. It shouldn't work, but with him, it does. The whole album's packed with things that I just can't imagine another artist getting away with. A song like Controversy should feel messy and aimless, but with him it feels perfect and fully-formed. A line like What? No flash again?!" should seem ridiculous but it feels intense and awesome when he says it. There's a confidence he inserts into everything here, from every word his voice projects to every note his hands deliver. It's an extremely confident album and for good reason, it's Prince really at the top of his game in a lot of ways and not compromising at all. It's got all the texture, the tone, the themes and the talent that I think of when I think of Prince.

Oh and on as a random aside: Private Joy is this album's Uptown and it's just as good. Amazing song, his vocals are so fluid and that beat just does not let up even once.

Some of my favorite wtfs:
Pure Energon — Transformers-themed concept album with the Information Society.
Untitled EP with Kim Basinger, Ween, and Ozzy Osbourne.
Replica Batsuit — Michael Keaton era design, built to scale, matte purple finish.
T.C. Bear outfit — Built to scale.
Robin — Concept album dedicated to Robin to coincide with the Batman And Robin film release.
“Mr. Freeze” — Concept maxi-single Batman And Robin/Arnold Schwarzenegger tie-in for a promotion with Dairy Queen.
“It’s Morris Time” — Morris Day and Jason Mewes rap track intended for the Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back soundtrack. Never released*
PnP 242 — Industrial project with Dave Pirner from Soul Asylum.
PxP — Hardcore project with Dave Pirner from Soul Asylum.
PP — Chuck Berry tribute album with Dave Pirner from Soul Asylum.
Neil Young’s Homegrown album.
Untitled Kevin Smith-directed documentary (It does exist!)
Purple Rain 2: The Purpling. (wat)
“Batdance” 20th Anniversary Nike+ Remix For Runners.
Joker — Tribute album to Heath Ledger.
Joker 2 — A collection of songs written for Jared Leto, including the focus track “Thirsty.”
* You'd think K.Smith would have mentioned that one once or twice.

I wonder what sort of 'hardcore' or 'industrial' sound would be like with Soul Asylum and Prince.

Most of the albums listed there were already known to exist (but shelved for various reasons), and others are highly unbelievable - such as Purple Rain 2: The Purpling, a climate change album, and Crystal Ball 3 & 4 (read at the descriptions).
Also I don't know what David Bowie's Toy album doing in there. Not to mention the lack of many other live albums, Welcome 2 America, etc. Maybe it's true, but we'll have to wait and see. I don't buy it, though.

Don't know if this has been posted, but there were two fantastic soundboard recordings shared for FREE in the couple of weeks before Prince's death. One is a wonderful soundcheck from the final show of the P-Rain tour at the Orange Bowl in Miami, the other is a show from the Glam Slam club in Minneapolis from 1994.
Here are the links..

This is one of my fave Prince tracks, its original is on Batman and sounds Industrial; sexy with a bit of self-deprecation, a freaky dance floor. Its even got some spooky whispering layered louder than the screaming vocals, a la NIN. Setlist.fm claims it was only played 2x, which of course goes to show how great even Prince's cast off tracks are. Here is one of those live shows: http://www.mojvideo.com/video-prince-electric-chair-snl-1989/a528943aaed639b51cba

I don't think we have even officially done Purple Rain yet but I have been listening to "She's Always In My Hair" a lot lately which was a b side to a single off the Purple Rain singles. The song is fucking awesome the various versions that are out there but it really came across live even better. What a fucking song!!!!!
Actually it was a ATWIAD b-side, to Raspberry Beret in the US and Paisley Park elsewhere.

I'm just gonna repost my thoughts on the Batman soundtrack here from elsewhere since discussion seems to have effectively petered out:

I'm not going to sit here and bullshit you and say that Prince was always my absolute favorite artist or anything. He's up there, but anyone who's known me for the last fifteen years or therabouts can attest to my growing up with an undying, passionate, why-won't-you-shut-the-hell-up love for the likes of NIN, The Smashing Pumpkins, Manson, Bauhaus, Bowie, The Cure, KMFDM, Pig, et. al.

But before all of that, long before even my early teenage metal years, when the year was 1989, Tim Burton's Batman - instantaneously upon its creation becoming the most important event in human history as we all know - made a mark on me and changed my six-year-old world forever. I had to have everything in the stores with that symbol on it. The merchandising was absolutely everywhere, and it worked; I had posters, chewing gum trading cards (still have the whole set), action figures and playsets, an ill-fitting Halloween costume, the whole nine yards. And of course, I had to have the music. And so it was that the Batman soundtrack was purchased for me on cassette.
I'd actually wanted Danny Elfman's score more, as I recall, but hell, I needed "those Joker songs" too, you see. "The one from the museum scene, and the one from the parade scene". And I played the hell out of that thing. Nonstop. I can still sing along to every lyric. Not once these days does a listen find me unrelieved that Michael Jackson turned the album down before The Purple One picked it up (yes, that was nearly a thing that happened).
You may be thinking "But he sings about....er..." Well, yes. Half those songs, Prince being Prince, were, yes, about sex, and the concepts seemed mostly foreign and vaguely icky to me (I recall wondering why he was singing about putting a floppy disc into a computer). But I just didn't care; the music was good.

In retrospect, that album probably set the stage for my musical tastes for the rest of my life. It's a much darker album than Prince normally gets, this possibly being because he and Elfman worked together to some extent. You can hear it in Scandalous especially, but many songs like The Future, Lemon Crush, and Electric Chair - bearing the first guitar riffs I fell in love with - just have this edge to them that borders on the gothic. The sound of the album probably plays a direct hand in why I instantly fell in love with Depeche Mode's Violator - released the same year - a good decade and a half later.

Everyone and their mother loves Purple Rain. Everyone can sing along to Raspberry Beret or Little Red Corvette. But while his classic albums are legion, and I did indeed pluck them up one by one, it was only over the course of many years, and nothing ever hit me like the Batman soundtrack did - even aware as I am many years later it isn't close to being his best album, it remains my favorite of his works - to nobody's surprise, I'm sure.
"Electric Chair" taught me how awesome a guitar could sound. I've always wanted to learn how to play that song; I'd never heard anything like it at the time, and since then I've come to admire Prince's restraint and technique - he never wasted a note, every single one mattered. "The Future" filled me with a love of sweeping morose synths, fulfilled for me years later by discovery of Robert Smith and his merry band. "The Arms Of Orion" taught me to revel in cheesy ballads. "Lemon Crush" probably planted the seeds for my taste for crushing industrial beats.

And then there's Batdance. Fuck off, you know you love it.

What I'm saying is I don't know what I'd be listening to today if not for that man. You can call him Camille, The Kid, The Artist, Love Symbol, Prince Rogers Nelson - whatever you wish. To me, his name was Gemini - and he taught me how to funk...and how to rock. RIP.

Yeah, that album has some killer tunes. The standouts being Partyman, Electric Chair, The Future, Lemon Crush, Trust and 200 Balloons (b-side). I don't care much for the others tbph though. Also, too bad he left Dance With The Devil off the album.

I recently listened to Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds & Pearls, and the Love Symbol Album as I'm going to do Come and (maybe) The Gold Experience as I think Love Symbol and Diamonds & Pearls are strong albums though I have mixed feelings about some of the hip-hop material as I really don't like "Jughead" at all. When it comes to women, Prince comes off as playful but Tony M. comes off as a fucking dick. Why did Prince associate himself with that piece of shit? I recently read an interview with Tony Barbarella who was the keyboardist for the NPG and he is right. "My Name is Prince" was a bad lead-off single for the album as I hear the lyrics and some of it is ridiculous. I think I prefer Jamie Foxx's parody of the song.

Tony M was awful in every way. The rapping he did on those records sounded dated before they were even released. In concert he was absolutely atrocious, shouting his head off and barely able to keep up with the music before having to gasp for air. Terrible. The whole Game Boyz hard man, hip hop thing was utter shite and ruined a couple of great records. Listen to the "D&P beginnings bootleg," the songs sound so fresh and airy without Tony M or Rosie Gaines warbling over the top of them.
Apparently, everyone knew that Tony M was shite, except Prince...who thought he was great...lol.

I read stories about the Game Boyz during the Nude tour and man, they were awful. Especially to Rosie Gaines who was forced to ride in Mavis Staples' bus because of those assholes and Prince didn't do anything about them. They were dicks.

I listened to Come last night and.... OK.... I don't understand why it was poorly received. I thought it was really fucking good. It was dark but then again, I like dark music. I liked the fact that it was more steeped in R&B and had elements of groove. It also had some heavy electronics and lyrically, it was very dark. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Right now, I'm on the Kamasutra portion of the Crystal Ball album as it is really good yet it's The Truth that fucking won me over as it's currently in my top 10 list of Prince's best albums. That was a real surprise as I love "Dionne" and "Fascination".

I'm about to start the 3rd disc of Crystal Ball. I had no idea 90s Prince was so prolific (even for him). Two triple LPs in a row? My God.

This is the first time I'm hearing most of these albums, and it's been an experience. It's a gift when an artist can make an 8+ minute song interesting & compelling. I love those extended jams.

I'm actually really excited to get to the latter day stuff because that's when I got into his music (3121 made me a proper fan), and I'll have a whole new context for them. :)

Camille
05-20-2016, 04:37 AM
I have a love/hate thing going on with Crystal Ball. I actually bought the 4 disc version from an HMV in London not long after it was released, I then later bought the 5 disc version with Kamasutra added.
The packaging on the retail version is fine as it's a fat jewel box with a nice booklet, the glass ball/puck thing from the 1800 mail order was hopeless. If you stored it flat it could scratch the shite out of the discs, if you stored it upright there was a danger it could roll off your shelf and hit the bloody floor.
The music was so so too. The three discs of outtakes could have easily fitted on two discs instead of being spread over three, I mean....c'mon Prince, it's not like he was short of material. I also didn't like the way that some tracks were blended into others, and the fact that a lot of the tracks were remixes didn't help either.
Kamasutra is an instant throwaway imo. Prince attempting classical? Mmm...No! Call it Neo classical if you want, it's still awful. Even supermarkets wouldn't play this.
The Truth is better, some good tracks...some not so good. Animal Kingdom anyone?

Anyway, getting back to the actual three discs of the set. It could have been an amazing release, a monumental release but it ended up sub par imo, coupled with the problems that many faced when ordering this set, it ended up being a rather muted release rather than the Dawn of a new age or whatever other flannel Prince was spouting at the time.

So is this still happening or what? Honestly, I got burned out last week after doing 27 of his albums with 12 more studio albums left plus the live albums and some of his side projects. How far has anyone gotten to? I've made it as far as N.E.W.S. and then I just got tired.

ok, so here i am weeping and singing through purple rain. wasn't expecting that when it started playing on the radio. :'(
7th grade, slow dancing with michael q., in the gym.
i thought bowie dying caused unexpected grief (honestly surprised by how much it hurt), but this is just so sad. and weird.
r.i.p. you marvellous, beautiful, magical mofo.

I know people love to stream, and that's great. But, it's sad that he did not have a will. He could have continued to control his music how he saw fit for some time.

I think 20Ten is a very underrated album and there's one hell of an album hidden in those three discs of Emancipation. My single disc variation goes as follows:

1. Jam of the Year
2. Right back here in my arms
3. One kiss at a time
4. We gets up
5. Joint 2 Joint
6. I can't make U love me
7. 2 morrow
8. Sleep Around
9. Dreamin' About U
10. Get Ur groove on
11. Emale
12. New World
13. The Holy river
14. The love we make
15. In this bed I scream
16. Emancipation

This sequence is up there with his best from the 80s imo...
