I thought there was a thread for these guys. New single out. Apparently, this is from their third album they have been teasing for ten years now. I will believe it when I see it... but I'm loving this new song.

the new song is good, but definitely doesn't hit me emotionally like their usual stuff.

i love the first two albums, but i think My Color Green and Coloring Book contain the best music they've ever made. so innovative and beautiful, and i never tire of listening to them. the new song is definitely more in line with their older stuff, which isn't a bad thing, but slightly disappointing. i was hoping they'd keep pushing forward.

MCG and CB (acronyms!) were definitely better musically and songwriting-wise, but the energy of their older stuff was tremendous. It seems like this is trying to recapture that a bit.

This new song is pretty great, but I feel like Glassjaw is the post-hardcore TOOL. They keep promising an album that I'm not sure they actually intend to put out, and their core fanbase are too obsessed to realize otherwise. I mean, everyone remembers the Coloring Book vinyl fiasco? That took them, what, two years of holding on to people's money before they actually released that?

Granted, I love Glassjaw, and I'm glad I got to see them on the Worship & Tribute tour back in the day, but I'll believe they're releasing a new album when I'm actually holding that shit in my hands.

Big Glassjaw fan, just not of this song. The production sounds really bad. Hopefully the rest of the new album will be better.

Personally I am more interested in the third Head Automatica album: I loved Popaganda.
Never really cared for Glassjaw...Worship and Tribute was a cool album, but I don't think I've played it in a decade.
Daryl is a talented vocalist, but I don't think he's ever quite found the perfect vehicle for his voice yet.

Agreed. I was really glad we got anything at all with My Color Green, and Coloring Book. Most of the time now, I listen to their older material out of nostalgia. With Coloring Book and MCG, I can revisit that material whenever and get lost in with it. Definitely their most impressive work out of their discography. Hearing it live is a fucking treat I tell you. This new song is pretty good, just seems like them going through the motions. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't on the album.

I have been patiently waiting for Swan Damage to come out myself. All the live material of that album I could find sound fantastic. Daryl was interviewed on the Island for the Hampton newspaper, and he said it was a go... that was three years ago. Same story with Daryl with anything he touches. Look at Color Film... instead of the album that was announced, all we got was an EP.

I like it. Apparently the other new songs played (7 total) at the first tiny warm-up gig at some bar in London were more EYEWTKAS-esque in the heavy guitar work & drumming. One guys dscribed it as a wall of sound. Guess we'll see!

I thought the title said "Shinra". I was about to lose my shit, but nonetheless, I cannot wait to hear a studio version of the new track. I've seen them 6 times and am patiently awaiting them to play White Locust again even thought it will probably never happen. I'm still regretting not going to the Worship and Tribute anniversary show :(.

I saw them with The Used a week ago. They played NWE, Shira & My Conscious Weights A Ton and they all sounded great. I received a flexi-disc as well. I'm not a vinyl head...can't believe something like this would play on a turntable but apparently it would.

Album is def. coming out 12/1 or thereabouts. Too much is going on for this to be another false start. GJ is one of my all-time favorites. I've seen them live prolly around 20 times now, met Daryl & other rotating members a few times. They are supremely important band that melded their hardcore roots into something so much more. Let's not even get into how many bands ripped them off...

My favorite time seeing them live...great show on it's own merits, and a special day for me personally also:

I didn't really like Shira too much until I popped it on through my headphones and took a walk, the production is messy but that's what I love about Glassjaw, those barely contained guitar riffs that suddenly gel into choruses with Daryl holding things together (or vice versa). It takes a bit of getting used to (EYWTKAS took ages for me to 'get') but its worth it. I can't wait.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAQwAzZvGoo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVggVT3SLFQ

These guys have so much material to check out, so if you're just coming in and learning more about the band, make sure to look up their EP's and singles because they can easily get lost in the mix. I believe Convectuoso is one of the best things they have ever done musically.

bobbie solo
11-27-2017, 12:26 AM
Convectuoso is an absolutely beautiful song. I was lucky enough to catch it live once and it's really moving. I prefer the demo version, as dick as it was for RR to release it w.o the band's permission:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvMWx4vMCWM

Black Nurse is one my faves. I wear this shirt every 2 or 3 weeks:

https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/akkAAOSwx6FZsSBV/s-l225.jpg

El Mark is my personal favorite non-album/EP song. It sounds really shitty live though w/o a 2nd guitarist. Beck really needs to rethink that whole thing. Alot of the material suffers w/him trying to do it all up there on stage. Studio version is fucking killer though:

Also, the title track is the instrumental music from the official site's splash page. I knew it wasn't All Good Junkies like that one guy was claiming..

I would be inclined to believe this based on how the album is mixed/frankensteined together. For instance, if you're not paying close attention to the track transitions, the beginning of "shira" sounds like "new white extremity" starting over. "citzen" begins with a riff that sounds like it's somewhere in the middle of the guitar solo from "shira".

This thing is fucking amazing after 3 listens... and that bass!

Material Control is awesome! I started listening to Glassjaw last week when I saw all the news about the new record pop up everywhere. I'm so glad I did, because their stuff is brilliant. New White Extremity is a fucking badass opener, I love how once the album starts, it doesn't let up. Every track flows into the next perfectly too. There's so many wonderfully dissonant guitar and driving, dubby bass parts, I feel like I need more listens just to wrap my head around everything!

i have a CD/DVD of it that i bought from their site a couple years ago. never popped the DVD in but i think it's just live footage.

either way, coloring book is still my favorite thing they've ever done. it still sounds as incredible to me as the first time i heard it, and i've listened to it many, many times.

i listened to "material control" yesterday and it's...fine? the basslines are really interesting and intricate but i found myself focusing too much on them, and the fact that it sounded like the guitar was always panned right and the drums seemed like they were sitting more on the left, and it just made the whole thing seem off-balance. it was a weird mixing choice. as for the songs, they're...fine. again, nothing bad, but nothing mind-blowing.

I still listen to Coloring Book on the regular, as well.

As far as the mixing, the instruments are separated that way in all of their records (just not to this extreme). For example, Justin Beck was left channel, Todd Weinstock was right channel. Daryl's vocals sit in the center, bass on the left, drums slightly left of center. You can even hear the "left of center" drum mixing on songs like "Black Nurse".

hmm, i guess you're right and it's just more extreme (and thus way more noticeable) on material control. interesting. i know dave fridmann is a fan of doing that sort of stuff (which is why i had such a hard time listening to "drums & guns" by low, since the channels are almost 100% separated) and i always think it's odd. i like a mix to sound cohesive and full, not oddly spread out. unless you're doing a 5.1 mix where you want it to sound like you're in the room with the group of musicians around you (like the did with "kind of blue" and is actually pretty cool), i don't understand that philosophy.

wow, sorry. /rant

Yeah, some wack mid-week dates. But I'll be there in Atlanta on a MONDAY!

If I lived in Chicago it would be a no-brainer, but definitely not taking two days off of work for that since I live in Indy.

Long gone are my days of leaving Indy at noon, hanging out for a while, going to a show, departing Chicago at 11 or 12, arriving home at 330 or 4, and then going to work the next morning.

all of my fav glassjaw songs are contained within the "my color green" & "coloring book" EPs. nothing else holds a candle to those for me. still super disappointed in material control :/

If we're talking cohesiveness, Coloring Book imo takes the crown on that one and I adore that EP; was able to snag two physical EP's for that tour :D.

Material Control is def an odd ball, and I didn't enjoy it on my first 2 listens until one day, it clicked to me. It's a different kind of beast compared to their previous full lengths, and def a grower. 6 weeks in the making for M.C. and they can still pump out quality tunes.

Even though I won't be at any of these part. shows, I hope they play some of the Silence/W&T b-sides on the nights where they're only playing one record on this tour. So maybe Number will get an extremely rare performance next year.

I fall into the common POV re: Material Control...that it's worst aspect is the production. I think alot of the songs are written well, and come off pretty well live.

Both of those EP's are marvelous. Black Nurse blew my fucking mind when it first came out. and the groove in the upbeat parts of this song is just....nasty:

I fucking hope so. I've seen them 7 times and nothing, but at least I will finally be able to hear Motel of the white locust. And absolutely agree with Material Controls production... It really limits a lot of what is actually going on musically. Once I amped the treble a bit and messed with the equalizer, I heard stuff I didn't on the first two listens. Vanilla is soooo good live though!

Wish they had two guitarists on tour, helps with the depth some of those songs definitely deserve.

There's something charming about the fact they only have one guitarist. Not sure what it is about some of the tracks but only having the single guitar with the distorted bass feels great.

These guys are absolutely ridiculous with their vinyl releases.

1. This is 3LPs for $200
2. Brooklyn Vegan is selling a $93 version without the glass case but even that is too much for 3 records
3. Previous presses of EYEWTKAS were 2LP. This is on 1 LP meaning they must have compressed the shit out of this to get it to fit on 1 disc.

It's all baffling. Like usual for GJ.

As a thing, yeah, gorgeous. But that's going to be a nightmare from a quality control standpoint.

Bummer you can only get it with tickets to a show.

And then factor in the fact you can only pick it up at a show...woof.

After watching the Coloring Book vinyl reissue fiasco from afar...yikes this'll be popcorn worthy.
