I was really surprised to not see a thread for her already

Chelsea's been one of my all-time favorites since I first discovered her, most likely here on ETS.

Also - here's a new song, tracklisting, artwork, etc for the upcoming album Abyss (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/premieres/chelsea-wolfe-details-new-album-streams-haunting-first-single-iron-moon-20150428)

discovered her when i saw her play with Marriages and Russian Circles a couple years ago. absolutely fucking amazing. she opened with "movie screen" which started with her creating the haunting vocal loops, and lasted for about 10 minutes. i was hooked from then.

my friend isn't huge on pain is beauty (though we saw her together right after she started touring on it), but i love it even more than apokalypsis. so when the pre-orders went up yesterday for Abyss, i jumped right on it!

Couldn't resist ordering Abyss, Apokalypsis, Pain is Beauty & The Grime & The Glow from her online store [I've wanted Apokalypsis for a while but saw it was the orange/ black and The Grime & The Glow was grey/ black so thought fuck it]. Looking forward to receiving that, along with the myriad other things en route to me!!

Definitely Chelsea's best work, yet. I get a Downward Spiral-vibe, also, which is awesome cause I've always felt TDS is really unique, sonically. John Congleton is a beast behind the boards, nowadays. Everything he's worked on over the past few years has been really exceptional. I would go so far to say he's like a new Flood. Can't wait for his new album with the Nighty Nite, also.

work your way backwards. go with "pain is beauty" and then check out "apokalypsis" and "the grime and the glow"

also, "unknown rooms" is fantastic and would be a good listen at any point.

I know, she's so amazing! I was just kind of a casual fan until I heard "abyss", and now I'm in love. I really hope she does another set of North American shows to promote the album, cause she played at a really small club in the twin cities late last summer and I totally missed out. I really want to hear these songs live.

chelsea wolfe is a person. she is the main songwriter / guitar player / vocalist in the band that plays under her name.

check out "pain is beauty", her second most recent album, then "unknown rooms," her "acoustic" album, then "abyss", her newest album, and then "apokalypsis" / "the grime and the glow" her first two albums (in reverse order). that's my recommendation. a lot of her vocals on her newest album remind me quite a bit of tori amos, which is fantastic, especially in the framework of such dark and heavy music.

Love the new song! While I actually prefer Emma Ruth Rundle and always had issues with Chelsea's stage persona this is a really good track. I enjoyed her show last year though as a full backing band really suits her and the energy all around in a live setting. Surprised but eagerly awaiting the record! Sargent House is a heavenly label!

Chelsea’s new album is so crushingly beautiful. Delicate and haunting and melodic. Saw her last week and I could describe her performance with the same adjectives. Loved the stage setup too, Chelsea surrounded by a swath of white and lights. I liked Ionna Gika’s performance as well. I was already a fan of her former band IO Echo.

Yes, b/c Pissed Jeans actually are a pretty good band but i cannot listen to them or take them seriously bc their name disgusts me. who said I was judging? There were multiple entries in a row of people openly complaining about the album cover and band name, and so I asked the simple question. Male musicians put out art even more graphic than a drawing of a woman pissing and I don’t ever see any complaints. Just simply asking if people would feel the same way if it was, say, a new Aaron Turner side project.

You seem to be the only one offended by this so I don’t know, guilty conscience?

There have been various instances in the past where the presentation of a band's record or even the band itself threw me off that much, that I ended up not buying the physical product. Doesn't matter who is behind this... as a big Rammstein fan I refuse to buy into their more profane stuff as well.

I enjoy this EP for what it probably is, a fun little piece for both of these women and I really do like some of these songs. It's kind of forgettable though, isn't it? And yeah, band name and presenation leaves alot to be desired... yet I can see where they are coming from, giving this an edgy 80s/early 90s DIY-aesthetic.

Wow.

By implication, your post paints everyone who commented on the album cover as hating it because they're women. Please read it again and tell us that isn't true.

Now you point the finger directly at me, which is not cool at all. I don't get this conflict and indirect name-calling. It's pointless.

I've never even given Pissed Jeans the chance because of how off-putting their name is. Never heard a single song of theirs, even when they were in all of the music headlines, and I don't plan on it either. The name and art of a musical project is how the art is presented to the listener, and I'm just not interested in anything presented in this way. If you don't take your art seriously, why should I?

To come into a thread for a female artist and accuse the fans of being misogynists isn't exactly the wisest course of action.

For that to be your first post in this particular topic is quite telling.

I may be reacting poorly to this situation, but I do not think I'm in the wrong here. The point of view you're bringing into this thread is abhorrently sexist.

You asked (paraphrased) "Would you be as put off by this if it were made by men?". I struggle to see anything rational there.

It's a difficult one. What you're asking me to do is give up the battle against sexism, which in itself is fairly problematic. Giving up here is allowing sexism to prevail and perpetuate. I can't stand by and watch that happen.

However, I will stop, simply because I get that this is both derailing the thread and annoying you. I apologise for that.

1. I wasn't directing that solely at you. 2. You are taking the Karen thing way too far... The male equivalent is a Kevin, so it's not like women are singled out. It's, for both genders, a person that is easily outraged and is quick to start fights. So, yes, you are acting that way. @richardp (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=139) isn't helping the situation, but your comments demonstrated a misunderstanding of everyone else's comments and turned it into something it never was. I'm sorry that you feel that anything and everything could be considered sexist, but consider that that could just be you reacting emotionally rather than taking the time to be responsive and learn exactly what the intention was. Stop pointing fingers, breathe, and seek to understand what people mean. Not everyone is trying to pick a fight. And @richardp (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=139)... Stop trolling.

I left a query through bandcamp, but I doubt they'll respond. I also tried Sargent House, still waiting for their reply.
Hope it gets fixed soon, or get confirmation that it was intentional (which'll piss me off even more, lol).
You can't really make it work even when you edit out the gap and make them seamless, because there's a subtle difference in tone.

So, I got my vinyl today and redeemed my digital copy. I'm not sure if you got different files than I did, but I was able to seamlessly edit out the gap between Downer Surrounded by Uppers and Knelt in Ableton Live. I don't hear any difference in tone. It transitioned perfectly. I haven't listened to the vinyl yet to verify if that mistake is only on digital version or not, but I'll report back after I have.

I was not into her recent Mrs. Piss project but I really like her solo stuff. And she's been quite productive during the pandemic.
She hits hard live, heavier than I expected. Recommended.

Last time I saw her was a mid-July summer indoor show in the nasty, sticky European heat, and it was probably 125 Fahrenheit in that club. People were dropping like flies. She told the promoters to fuck off and that she'd leave stage right now if they would not open up the venue doors - they did not want to initially due to nighttime noise restrictions or whatever.
You should have seen how quickly those doors and windows were opened..

It only took me a year, but i finally bought the Birth of Violence vinyl! Went to a record store last week, and found it tucked away in the indie section, it was the only CW record they had (now I need to get Abyss vinyl, have it on CD, but it's one of the best records of any band). Listened to it yesterday with good headphones and it's AMAZING. Lots of soundscapes and details here and there. I want her to tour again so bad.

Damn there's a Chelsea Wolfe thread here? I discovered her on the Ministry tour supporting AmeriKKKant (dunno the name of it). My mom dragged me out to it at Bogarts in Cincinnati when I was, I dunno, 15? No earplugs, rail, never really listened to the band before that. Let's just say it was an experience. IMO, she totally stole the show, the entire time we were marveling st her vocals and the incredibly strong performance from the rest of the band.

Some kind of NIN spotting: flipping through the Birth of Violence booklet, I come to learn that Kraw did the art direction for that album. Prick, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard ‘Abyss’ but if you haven’t, go for it. I discovered CW (and that album) in a ‘Top 10 albums of the year’ list at the Fourth Eye (Tool) forum, the list called Abyss a “Downward Spiral successor” (or something to that effect, that line alone prompted me to check out the record) and here we are now.

If you dig this new track I'd recommend checking out Abyss. I think the production on that record is probably the best and also the closest to this new track in a good way. Maybe also check out Apokalypsis as it's also really heavy and a bit more raw, some great tracks on that one. I've also really thought The Grime and the Glow is a very solid and unique record. The production on it is much more lo-fi but the record really benefits from it and it's also a showcase of the type of songwriting she was capable of right from the jump. The track Halfsleeper, in particular, is just fucking transcendent. Somehow her harmonies find a way to be dark and disturbing while beautiful and dreamlike at the same time.
