Alec Empire gave the keynote speech at the 2014 Chaos Communication Congress. Near the beginning, he introduced himself and showed some photos of people wearing Atari Teenage Riot (his group) shirts. One photo was of Trent and some random lady. I'm not going to link to the talk, which you can watch online. Why? I have no idea if linking to it would break any forum rules. :p

It may have already been mentioned but Russell Mills finally sent out an email blast with new information about Cargo In the Blood, The Reverse is also true, his book featuring and discussing the artwork he made for Hesitation Marks. He is also planning a similar book for his Downward Spiral art.

Cargo In The Blood | The Reverse Is Also True
limited edition multiple

With his musical collaborator Mike Fearon as assistant, Mills spent most of October in Los Angeles working on two 200' x 6' mixed media canvases. These have been cut down into 4000 individual unique artworks, 2000 of which will be included in the limited edition multiple Cargo In The Blood/The Reverse Is Also True, which features all the works made towards use in the Nine Inch Nails Hesitation Marks album of 2013. To be produced in an edition of 2000 copies, the releaae date, price and details of how copies of Cargo In The Blood can be ordered will be announced soon on both www.russellmills.com and www.nin.com

The Art of Nine Inch Nails : The Downward Spiral
limited edition multiple
The second set of 2000 works may be included in a similar limited edition multiple showcasing the art works that Mills created for Nine Inch Nails' seminal The Downward Spiral album of 1994. This limited edition has yet be confirmed.

Speculatively, it may be even more than that. I'm not sure, because this is the first time so much NIN artwork has been presented in high-quality reproductions at this size (except maybe in David Carson's Fotografiks, but that was alongside his other work).

His NIN prints are £300 - that's ~$450, so you might be right

Helmet's Page Hamilton mentions Trent/NIN in interview for Alternative Nation (http://www.alternativenation.net/interview-helmet-frontman-discusses-kurt-cobain-trent-reznor-betty-album/):

I was hoping we could discuss some of the the individual tracks on Betty as well. We’ll start with the opener track, “Wilma’s Rainbow?”
Page: The title I got from a place that sold shaved ice in New Orleans on Magazine Street. And it was coincidentally down the street from the Nine Inch Nails’ funeral home studio that Trent Reznor bought years later [Nothing Studios]. I ended up spending a lot of time at that studio and Trent was really generous. [...]

Another collaboration that comes to mind is on Nine Inch Nails’ track “No, You Don’t.” Can you talk about how this happened and working with Trent?
Page: Trent was a Helmet fan and they asked to tour with us after he was opening for David Bowie and we just had a blast. We hit it off and had a really fun time. I went down to New Orleans to work with Charlie Clouser, who was one of the most brilliant computer geeks worked with and he was a big part of The Downward Spiral. And then I just was riffing one day and Trent was really into it and it evolved from there. It was a good musical pairing, even though we have different backgrounds. I’m a Masters Degree in jazz kind of guy and Trent is really good with the technology side of things.

So, kind of a personal plug. But I was recently interviewed by Cleveland dot com for the live archive. I was more excited about the fact of having a bit of exposure with the archive in Cleveland just due to the fact of the start of NIN being in that city. Someone who worked at the site was an employee at TVT Records and I am hoping to speak with someone that could see if anyone has any earlier NIN live recordings from the label. Also talked with someone who is trying to help me track down the Phantasy Theatre owner to see if they can spread any light on earlier recordings.. If their in house board guy had recorded any of their earlier shows. That would be pretty neat!

Brief mention here: http://www.avclub.com/article/steven-soderbergh-posts-his-110-minute-recut-2001--213842

Previously, he mashed up the two versions of Alfred Hitchcock and Gus Van Sant’s Psycho to reveal the subtle changes made between the films and how those affect viewing. He also redid Raiders Of The Lost Ark as a black-and-white film with a Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross soundtrack, which illustrated Steven Spielberg’s expert command at blocking and shot composition.

I feel like they could EASILY a double that number if they did a headliner on their own instead. That's kinda shitty.

Not sure if you're laughing at them, or with them!

Anyways, gotta wonder what someone like The Bug (or whatever his or her name was during LITS) got paid. Or imagine being the undercard for a lesser band that can't fill clubs yet plays them.

Should be some good stories on here from ETS members who've done some of their own touring. Googling it would probably dig up stories as well.

To be fair I'm sure it's an industry standard thing, and not a NIN/TR situation. They even said theres no hard feelings towards it- they took the offer and that's why NIN/TR has management to pay for.

Which brings an interesting thing up- rarely do you see now a good opener for established bands outside of co-headliner tours. Times change I guess.

botley
01-15-2015, 11:57 PM
Dresden Dolls were not "popular" yet on that tour. This was Spring 2005, they were virtually unknown outside of some very small pockets of fans.

NIN's opening bands also got to eat the backstage craft services & dinner served at each show; I remember Amanda blogging about that way back when.

Touring in that slot can be rough regardless of how much you're making each night. I think NIN was pretty courteous to their openers, unless they did something stupid like DFA1979 talking shit openly about how miserable they were doing it.

Maron, Nerdist, KCRW's The Treatment, or Jay Mohr are all probably good bets to get TR off his sets of talking points. May be why he doesn't seem to hit the podcast circuit, it tends to be less controlled and more conversational. Although, he does seem looser now than in years past.

Man do I have a hard time picturing Chris Hardwick getting something out of Trent... I like the Nerdist, but when a guest doesn't fit the tone and format, Hardwick is left completely helpless.

I guess it really depends. Trent can be in a good mood and make stupid jokes for an hour, or mumble monosyllables because he's not comfortable... At least it will give Hardwick the occasion to mention how he quit drinking, because he never brings that up in the podcast.

Is Carpenter listening to anything new that excites him personally? “Absolutely! I love the work of Hans Zimmer… and Trent Reznor’s been doing some really interesting things, movie soundtracks. So yeah, I pay attention.”

It's nice that Carpenter admires Trent and Atticus' work. When I saw the interview where he mentioned that they were going to be on the same album, Carpenter seemed quick to distance himself from Trent, but now I think that was just to be clear that they hadn't worked together on it.

He turned down Manson to play with Limp Bizkit, if we're accurate.

And he turned down Reznor, who only wants guns for hire, and Manson, who doesn't listen unless you're Manson, to rejoin a band where he is actively creative, surrounded by old pals and having fun.
Probably not a great career move, but I wouldn't call that stupid.
From everything I've read, he seems like a guy who's deeply aware of the status of his band, weighted the pros and cons, and decided he didn't really give a shit after all.

No, I think it was actually much later than that. I feel like I'd heard about Wes trying out & deciding against it, but I don't remember from where. I think he would have been a really interesting addition to the lineup.

I'm pretty sure Wes was looking at With Teeth lineup spot and it probably can be confirmed if you dig theninhotline news archives carefully.
If I'm not mistaken, he dropped from both NIN and MM to re-join Bizkit. Remember, he did it twice (first time in 2005 for Unquestionable Truth and again later during Gold Cobra era).

If he loved bald Freddy and the Bizkit so much then why did he bail on them and quit at the height of their fame and fortune to he can form a wannabe Mr Bungle side project....1 reason and 1 reason only why ol Wes told Manson and Trent no and Fred yes...KA-CHING.....has nothing to do with artistic credibility because anyone who plays in Limp fucking Bizkit clearly has no artistic integrity....

Yeah I never said anything about artistic integrity. Sure, artistic integrity is great, it's also a luxury. Seeing that concept thrown around by people who don't do any art for a living is quite rich, to be honest. For one David Bowie or Trent Reznor (or I don't know what your Herald of Artistic Integrity is, Bill, given your constant cynicism I have a hard time believing you actually have one) who earn millions with their art, you have thousands of artists who starve because they won't sell out, or sell at all.

The guy doesn't even deny his reasons, his interview amounts to "been there, done that, didn't care much about it and nobody seemed to care either, so I went back to my old, successful band. I've been a bitchy snob for a while until reality knocked at my door and put me back to my place". The guy tried to be that great mindblowing artist, it didn't work for anyone, and now he's thinking he's at home in Limp Bizkit, for better or for worse. More power to him I say. If anything he doesn't sound delusional about himself, his fans, or his band.

He'd rather make a living than ache over some Grand Masterwork he may never be capable to achieve ? Sorry, that sounds honest to me.

Thats all fine and dandy but if you're playing in a band you hate just for the paycheck, thats the definition of selling out, thats all. I could care less if he sells out, its his choice, more power to him. But dont deny it. Hes a sellout and will probably admit it. I'd have more respect for him if he said he's in LB because he loves the music and fuck what everyone says but read between the lines in that interview, he basically sounds embarrassed to be in that band.

"Selling out is the compromising of integrity, morality, authenticity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authenticity_%28philosophy%29) or principles in exchange for personal gain, such as money. In terms of music or art, selling out is associated with attempts to tailor material to a mainstream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainstream) or commercial audience; for example, a musician who alters his material to encompass a wider audience, and in turn generate greater revenue, may be labeled as a sellout."

That's the thing, I don't deny anything, and he doesn't either. I read the same interview as you, and I see a guy who's perfectly aware that he's a 40 years old playing in a nü metal band called Limp Bizkit. The guy's completely self-aware, he's joking about it (and if he wasn't there would be thousands of people like you to remind him of that fact daily), and when all is said and done he's okay with that. It's not a story filled with inspirational quotes, sure, but the guy's got a job, he doesn't hate it, but he's not fooling himself either.
You can throw around terms like selling out or artistic integrity, it only emphasizes how much you're missing the point.
He's tried that Artistic Integrity thing, it was called Black Light Burns, he refused to Sell Out to work on it. Nobody cared, all the bands he went to treated him like a spare cog, he went back to Limp Bizkit where he has friends, creative input and a steady salary.

Who even gives a fuck?

So someone who works at McDonald's is selling out too? A woodworker who works in metalwork to make ends meet? Who even gives a fuck?
I remember that time a pretty stupid 20-year-old me decided to call Wes Borland a sell-out on twitter, to Danny Lohner, before I ever put any real thought to it.

https://twitter.com/FernandoDante/status/403077865676800

Then Wes actually saw the tweet, even though I didn't mention him directly.

https://twitter.com/wesborland/status/426029730496512

And we proceeded to have a Twitter conversation that lasted through the night, on the merits of Limp Bizkit, NIN, and other bands. My main argument was that he was wasting time with Durst / Bizkit, and that Black Light Burns was an infinitely superior band. His argument was that Durst is part of what makes Bizkit the band it is, and he wouldn't change a thing about it. I got to understand really well where he was coming from, and he didn't even need to bring up the financial side of it. It's like he'll defend the band and his work without really saying whether he likes the music or not, and that's cool. In the end, I got a ton of respect for the guy and understood more about the industry and musicians, and he started following me on twitter the next morning. And continued to do so for like 3 years, I have no idea how.

So, yeah, judging music based on what you like/dislike is probably easier and more fair than judging the musicians themselves. For most people, making a buck in the music industry is really hard. Let them do it.

Yeah, the guy sounds completely genuine and humble, he's not trying to sell the rationale behind what he does, he's not trying to light anything under a pretty light. He's always seemed open to discuss anything, even if what prompted the discussion could be seen as offensive or sarcastic, and he never has acted as the bitchy party in those matters, as far as I know.
Call him a cunt in a bar and he'll smile and ask "what would make you think that ?"
I couldn't care less about Limp Bizkit, and Black Light Burns had a hard time holding my interest, but every time Borland was brought up he seemed like a very cool man.

Newfound sobriety and return to form, willingness to play ball within alt-rock formats of the mid-aughts (Obvious DFA-referencing single, Dave Grohl). Constant references to how "tight" new album was vs THE FRAGILE.

But, like I said, I don't really listen to mashups, so maybe I'm missing the point?

From what I've gathered from it is he had a bloody nose during The Frail/The Wretched (from reading the tour journal). But with blood under his arm, I would assume he may have gotten a cut or something along those lines. But I'm not here to debate on how it happened. The PA system had a problem where half the feed was out for the first three songs, then aborted. 15 minutes later, all was fixed and this was the most intense set from the With Teeth Club Tour. I don't get "really offended" but people actually get email notifications of shit in this thread and I'm respectful of that. "Front 242, KMFDM, Frontline Assembly, Nitzer Ebb, and Skinny Puppy" and whether or not it's Industrial isn't "NIN Spotting" or even discussing a NIN Spotting. In the old days, here, you got a warning bar for drifting in NIN Spotting (http://archives.echoingthesound.org/topics/47158/index.html), and then you got hammered with flood control for crying that this isn't a Democracy. If the mods didn't have a real life, this would get split a lot more (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/1719-Not-NIN-Spotting). (In the old days there were 10 mods, not 1.) I think it should relative to context, if it's in the midst of a promotion cycle with 3-4 articles or items per day popping up then the thread could be all business. But in these in-between periods, probably letting it all breathe a little wouldn't kill anybody.

I mean, it kind of ends up working that way anyway.

It's more draconian when it's busy, but it's up to the admins. It requires some common sense on the part of the users. But our opinions have never driven this bus, not in the 11 years I've been here, I can at least tell you that much. Not in the NIN section of the board, at least. It's never been a Democracy. If your comment begins with "I think," there's a section on the board for that.

When these things, like my post you keep harping on, are responses to a NIN spotting they should be fair game. We're discussing a NIN spotting IN NIN Spotting.

"I'd like to respond to something you wrote in NIN spotting but geez, I can't so could you kindly follow me to this other thread? Wait! I can't post this either since it's not a NIN spotting..."

It's silly and stifling. Especially in slow news times.

Of course opinions drive the bus, it's a message board about a rock band. I have no issue with what ultimately gets handed down as rule of law regarding this thread, life is short and I don't live here despite having been on every iteration of this board in some form. It just strikes me as silly to kill/divert interesting conversation in any form when it isn't actually interfering with anything.

I'll admit that diverting posts into a locked not-nin-spotting thread has been lazy of me, but I've only got so much leisure time anymore.

There's a whole forum devoted to reports and suggestions, it's only a click away, but instead we get a discussion in NIN Spotting about topic control. That's also pretty lazy.

So, for the people comparing Coldplay and NIN : here's great example of a very potentially Coldplay-ish song originally far removed from Coldplay territory, and how covering it improperly throws it straight back into Coldplay territory.
That's the song you don't want to cover. It avoids being stupidly triumphant by a nano margin, the tuning of the instruments is amazingly precise on that one, the strained voice of Reznor plays a lot too. Play it clearly, you end up with a shitty radiorock love song.

BRoswell
02-27-2015, 07:31 PM
To be honest, I think the song works even better when performed live. The fact that the whole song had to be brought down pitch wise so Trent could sing it kind of helped bring back a level of despair to the whole thing.

Khrz
02-27-2015, 07:40 PM
Even then, the original is a triumphant love song on paper, it's energetic, driven, except everything is juuust slightly off. The rhythm is broken and the guitars are under a constant glass ceiling. It's all slightly detuned. When I first heard it I was amazed at how precise it all was, everything's calculated to make it a failed rock anthem.
I think he aimed at the same thing with Everything, but to me he missed the mark a bit on that one, it's still too straightforward to really work.

But I think that's the song you can't really cover. Either you mimic Reznor precisely (and what's the point then), either you fuck it up. Your only real option is to reinvent it from scratch.

"Love Siege," Ghosts of Mars
Despite the fact that Ice Cube is one of the top-billed stars in the Ghosts of Mars cast, the soundtrack didn't tap the rapper for a few lines, but instead favored some insane metal shredding courtesy of Steve Vai, Buckethead, former Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck, and Anthrax. In Flames' singer mentions Trent (among others) as an inspiration:

http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/anders_friden_of_in_flames/

Songfacts: Who are your favorite songwriters and also singers?

Anders: Trent Reznor is a big inspiration for me. I would love to sit in the studio with him, pick his brain, or just be a fly on the wall, seeing how Nine Inch Nails' productions go down, or any of his productions, really. I think Martin Gore from Depeche Mode is an amazing songwriter. Layne [Staley] from Alice in Chains, he was a big inspiration for me in the beginning. I thought his lyrics were very dark, but yet very beautiful and sad, I mean, if you can put those two words together. He described this black, black hole with enormous passion.

No word yet on how faithful this reboot will be to the original graphic novel, but O’Barr seems to want it to adhere pretty rigidly. After all, he has already said it will feature Joy Division songs, unlike previous films (the 1994 version merely included a Joy Division cover by Nine Inch Nails) that dared depart from O’Barr’s vision of a rampaging Goth in leather pants who talks to birds.

TA: If you could only express yourself as an instrument, trusting that you had somebody who could play you and play you well, what instrument would you be for a year?

AVC: What’s your answer?

TA: I’d be an electric guitar because I just would. I’ve always wanted to be. I think you usually want to be something that you don’t do.

AVC: No piano for you?

TA: No, I live that. That’s my life.

I would really love to be an electric guitar but played by people who really play it, not people who just smash it up and try and look cool.

I wouldn't call 3 main live guitarists over the course of 26 years a "revolving door," especially when one of those was a member for just the early days and then another was a member for around 8 years, then came back and has stuck around for another 6.

Everyone uses ghosts though, its registration under creative commons makes it perfect for segues and background music, all they have to do is credit NIN somewhere, and they can use it absolutely free...
No they can't. It's BY-NC-NA, that means that whilst a non-profit can use it with just attribution, ANY commercial venture has to pay royalties.

I'm gonna go ahead and count this as NIN spotting... even though it's technically NOT NIN specifically, Alessandro kind of counts as NIN, and they even name drop Nine Inch Nails in the description, so it technically counts.

So my free local paper announces new concerts every Thursday, and when I saw this I was pretty intrigued ...
It's apparently an Alessandro Cortini show, but I have no idea what this is supposed to be promoting, but it seems to be some sort of one-off show, as I can't find any other tour dates on the web.

http://www.avclub.com/article/social-network-david-fincher-made-staring-laptop-t-216675

Just as the opening-credits sequence in Se7en (which Fincher didn’t direct, except in the sense of having commissioned it—it’s the work of ace title designer Kyle Cooper) uses a remix of Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” to hair-raising effect, so the score that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed for The Social Network imbues Fincher’s images with an anxious intensity. This particular cue, which is titled “A Familiar Taste” on the released soundtrack (for no reason that I can work out), combines heavy percussion with industrial screeches and a grungy, almost dirty guitar riff; it’s meant to be mildly unsettling, and it works. It’s also used expertly as punctuation. At the end, when Saverin mutters “Holy shit,” the cut back to Zuckerberg’s suddenly concerned expression (he’d looked smug seconds earlier) is accompanied by one final chug of Reznor/Ross noise, after it had seemed that the score had ended. That same effect occurs earlier in the sequence, when the score suddenly drops out as a group of women looks at Facemash, then slams back even louder on a cut to two smirking guys making their choices.

... probably because he doesn't know NIN like we do :) I assumed (or maybe I heard it somewhere) that title was because the track was derived from the already-existing 35 Ghosts IV, not because of anything in the film.

What’s the biggest snafu that has happened while you were playing with Nine Inch Nails?
When we stated the last leg of the tour in 2014, the first show was in Vegas and it had these moving projection screens that were moved by guys who set them up in different formations. The screens shut off and rebooted, so for a good portion of “Came Back Hard” we had these test images on the cards that read, “Card One,” “Card Two,” “Card Three,” “Card Four.” And this was at the beginning of the set. But the band’s very professional and we carried on, business as usual.

All of the errors in that make me giggle.

And is it just a coincidence that Zane Lowe was hired by Apple? Hasn't he done multiple interviews with Trent? Sounds like a Reznor hire.

Some of you might be disappointed that TR is working on this instead of new NIN, but I would rather have the release of a new NIN album delayed than have one that is compromised by commercial considerations because NIN is his main source of income (rather than making a tidy sum from Apple)-especially since it seems unlikely that he will be touring following the next release. Besides, isn't this setting up an opening later in the year for something like The Fragile Deluxe Edition, or at the very least a concert dvd?

I'm not. The guy deserves a break. He brought Nails back, released a successful album of quality material (sans Everything) and then toured his ass off for 18 months. Not expecting anything new to be happening with NIN until at least mid-2017.

If anything, it's Fragile Deluxe that has me chomping at the proverbial bit. Seriously, WTF is taking so long? Hasn't this thing been done for years now?

To be fair it's "ten OF the best" not "the ten best" but I found it weird that Gave Up is listed as a deep cut considering it has two music videos and is played at practically every show. Last would've totally fit that slot if they wanted to throw something from Broken there.

Well, even then that's moronic... I mean, I know maybe one or two tracks by The Cure, so finding ten tracks I probably haven't heard really isn't a tall order, every other The Cure track is eligible, that's not really Deep Cut material...

I don't know if it's the case with this site, but I've heard about a number of sites where the writer of the article doesn't get to choose the title. For example, you'll get food bloggers writing an article about 5 great pizza places in Brooklyn, but the editor will change the title to "5 best pizza places in New York" or something like that. It sounds like that might have happened here, since the text says doesn't make that claim, just that they're not mega-hits and that *some* of them are "rare" (which is true).

Most of the tracks fit what people mean when they say deep cut, though. Like, tracks that aren't singles or played a lot on the radio. (Gave Up is on The Definitive NIN - Deep Cuts, BTW.)

At this point, there's really nothing to speculate on... Last time Romanek worked with Reznor on something, they flushed it. We really should turn "Soon" into a zen koan, and meditate every time we hear NIN-related rumors.

Soon is maybe
Soon is perhaps
Soon is now
Soon is never

Vertigo

Well, it's not Trent scoring a Romanek film, he doesn't have one lined up. And surely it can't be Romanek directing the video for a Reznor single, because it's way too late to give Hesitation Marks the support it deserved, and if it's for a secret new album, it'd have to be extremely imminent.

I'm going to guess it has something to do with Apple, it seems the most likely. Romanek's very visually-inclined, just the type Apple likes, and Trent's in a position to provide the connection.
I wonder if we're going to see a promo video in the next few months for whatever Beats Music is going to turn into.
