Saw them twice earlier this year. Quite possibly two of the greatest shows I've ever seen.

Well if you are in the Bay Area, they announced some tour dates for 2012

04/15 – Big Sur, CA @ Fernwood Resort
04/16 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall
04/17 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall
04/18 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall
04/19 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall
04/20 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall

If you are anywhere in California and are a fan, I'd highly suggest finding a way to that show in Big Sur. It's outdoors and intimate.

The Big Sur show is ideal. Would love to see these guys and I'm hoping they play a certain California festival. These guys are fucking amazing.

I might end up shooting that big sur show for work!
Either way, im there. Probably would prefer to go in a capacity where i dont have tp be behind the camera...

I wanted to go see them so bad, I saw A Silver Mount Zion a couple years ago and it was one of the most unforgettable shows I've ever been to. I can't even image how amazing GY!BE would be.

I saw them right after 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons came out, I was highly let down by Kollaps Tradixionales. The closest they came to me was Chicago for the album's tour and I just didn't want to make the drive.

Also, did anyone check out Efrim's solo album that came out this year? I wasn't a big fan...

From what I can tell, ASMZ has played some newer stuff as recent as this year. It doesn't sound like there's anything official on the horizon, so who knows.

Also, I wasn't a fan of his solo album either.

Did anyone see the documentary Blood, Sweat and Vinyl? I saw it a few weeks ago and it is a good listen for those who like this type of music.

http://vimeo.com/27041738

I'm gonna post this in the music doc thread too but they interview Efrim pretty extensively in this.

I guess I'll be going to the ASMZ show at the Troubadour... Don't know if I'll be able to make it out for any of these Godspeed shows though. This seems to be indicating that there's a good chance they'll play Coachella.

Sorry didn't see this til now. Did meet some new friends so that was cool. Really enjoyed the show. They played my 3 favorite songs: There Is A Light, Blindblindblind, God Bless Our Dead Marines.

I loved when someone asked Efrim what his favorite bands were and he replied with Slipknot, Mudvayne and Staind hahaah

Killer set better performances. Loved the new material but its vinyl only and cant find a digital... pretty disappointed 'bout that. I was to the far back and this one chick would always start talking during the quiet parts. She kept getting shut up.

Really a great show though. Totally epic, never seen anything like it.

blackholesun
02-07-2012, 11:52 AM
Hey check yr PM's. Found a link to the new stuff.

That sucks about the chick talking. I was right along the front and everyone was chill.

I also really liked the opener. She had a great personality and really seems to be a master of her craft.

Wretchedest
02-07-2012, 12:59 PM
Yes. Matana was pretty cool. Very funny person the free saxophoning thing was a good way to get started too.

Efrim was surpisingly interactive. Always figured him gor a recluse but he was quite the social butterfly. Musing about the dichotomy between cocaine and kambucha, the canadian prime minister, etc.

Thanks for sending the files! When i saw the vinyl at the booth i a guy near me was talking about how hed seen them before and their merch booth was practically vacant. I asked him about the ep amd he looked at it inquisitvely and shrugged. So that thing has gotten no publicity at all, ha! I ended up talking to the drummer about it. He said get a vinyl player! I said i cant listem to vinyl in the car or on walks. But he also mentioned the material might end up on am lp at some point.
I figure i have to have bumped into you at some point. We got there pretty early. Lingered around the bus listened to a rant about coachella....

The west will rise again is an awesome song... like a trippy mathy version of the theme from twin peaks.

They also played another new song that wasnt on the ep iirc.

The show I saw them play was mind blowing... unfortunately I was standing next to a security guard who was bitching the whole show about how "I guess you need to be on drugs to understand this faggy music." The rest of the crowd was ok for the most part. I really need to see them again.

This record is AMAZING. It is very hard for me to think they were not inspired by al the shit going on in the Middle East at the moment. But I could be wrong.

From a different perspective, this came out just in time for Halloween as this record will awesome to play whilst sitting next to the bonfire piss drunk this Fall. And it goes quite nicely along with the new Caspian album that was just released.

Apparently, only the Bandcamp version (https://godspeedyoublackemperor.bandcamp.com/album/luciferian-towers) is split up over 8 tracks. I have yet to check if "Bosses Hang" and "Anthem For No State" are indexed by movement on the CD. For those wondering, the vinyl comes with a download card.

EDIT: various online outlets, including iTunes, also have the album split over 8 tracks

I can't really argue with the critical reviews I've seen giving it 2-3 stars, I myself would rate it 3/5. "Anthem For No State" is the clear standout. There are two problems I've having with this album:

1). The songs only seem partly fleshed out. My favorite post-rock is something like a rollercoaster or a psychedelic trip, if I may. All four tracks presented here only build and build, until they just end with about 10 seconds to spare in the track. There are no emotional crescendos, no repetitive "interludes" building to another high, nothing. This release reminds me more of an instrumental jam album than post-rock. Most of these songs feel like something you'd start hearing 5-8 minutes into a fully-realized GY!BE track (with the exception of "Anthem For No State").

2). This sounds like a live recording of a bunch of people in a room (in a cluttered way). I can understand the choice given how I described the album above, but the drums/percussion are buried 3/4 of the time. It's very noticeable.

Album is amazing. If anyone saw them on the 2015 tour...the "new song" later titled "Buildings" by fans is in fact "Bosses Hang". So glad this showed up on the record as it was amazing live and left an itch ever since hearing it.

Here is the live version from that tour:

Finally got around to listening to Luciferian Towers. If I'm being honest, it's probably my least favorite Godspeed release. It didn't quite grab me the way that the previous post-hiatus albums did. That said, it's still Godspeed, and it's still awesome.

I like it a lot. I especially like the first and last songs. It's more of a noise/psychedelic thing, than the epic crescendo thing we normally associate them with. That's ok.

If we're comparing to modern Godspeed, I can't say I like it as much as the last album but I like it quite a lot more than the album before that. There are some new ideas here that are really nice

I love the new album. It's probably my favorite of the 3 they've done since coming out of hiatus, though Mladic is my favorite "track".

Yeah I guess I would agree that it's like Don't Bend Ascend, maybe mostly I that it didn't land for me on my one listen. I also remain deeply annoyed that they're splitting songs into multiple tracks still. I hate that shit

My recording from Atlanta back in 2019 I think is what most of those songs originate from. I was always really happy with that tape.

It still blows my mind that some folks were lucky enough to see this band on the same bill as NIN.

I've seen them at the same festival as NIN in Europe (also 2013, the same year they opened Tension shows).
It was fucking surreal. NIN played at dawn, 19-ish, at the main stage, between Fall Out Boy and Eminem. Me and my crew caught about half of Em's headlining show from far away, and then moved to a tent where GYBE were scheduled to play. They started around midnight, when about half of the audience were slowly falling asleep after the whole day in the burning sun, especially when they started with super long Hope Drone.

yes, lol
but there are some festivals that really don't have any sort of curfew and the scheduled times just go out the window at some point. I'm pretty sure it was around 4AM when The Soft Moon finally hit the stage at Primavera (in Barcelona) in 2014 or 15. I was barely alive by then.

Very nice, thanks for posting that! I suspect I'll probably only listen to it that once, even if it is the Real Thing -- it's more interesting than good, IMO. Pretty awesome to have that bit of history finally, though, assuming it's real. (Edit: and it is real, excellent!)

Still hoping that a miracle'll happen and I'll feel comfortable enough going to see gy!be in Chicago next month. Thalia Hall's very nicely requiring vax proof (as in: negative test results aren't enough), which gives me some confidence. But I know too many COVID-floor nurses and committing to an indoor event this winter still feels awfully unlikely for me. I could really use the catharsis of a gy!be show!
