And btw, it is currently fucking FREEEZING!!!!!!!
To go to walmart or visit a dr AT ALL, we have to drive to dumas.
To catch a movie, visit a bookstore or a mall, see a DECENT dr, or any of that cool shit, we have to go all the way to amarillo

Yup. i represent a shitload of the state myself ;)

Can't imagine living in that area dude, you're stronger than me. I hate the traffic here, but I enjoy living in my big city.

Not from there, but I spent a year in Levelland (I don't expect people who were born in the state to know where that is. Tiny, tiny little place.)

No offense, but it pretty much made me hate the entire state and all that "Texas" stands for. I've since been to Austin and didn't really mind it. But where I lived, you were basically considered a horrible human being if you weren't a heterosexual conservative Christian, and I spent a lot of time biting my tongue in order to make sure I didn't commit career suicide.

You guys have that dry heat. I couldn't stand it. :p

Man, after years of living in bad dallas neighborhoods and standing out in the cold waiting on the bus and shit, it's been nice. It really has.
theimage13 , i can feel you.
And Stratford, population 1900, has that same fucked up vibe.
Also, keep in mind that i have 1" holes in my lobes, 1/4" holes in my conches, and my hair is over 2 feet long. And i'm about an eighth of an inch to the right of being a socialist.
People look at me fucked up here. But you know what? This town probably wouldn't EXIST anymore if it weren't for my family. My grandfather built a massive feed yard out here that provided jobs to half the town. He was the president of the bank. He had a fucking airplane. George W Bush worked for him there at one point in time. (Stratford of Texas was my grandfather's company.)
So FUCK those people.

Also, i don't really leave the house much. ;)
Seriously.

I still love texas though. There is a certain intangible quality to it that is just indescribable. I honestly don't know how to explain the "spirit" of texas, but it's very real. I live in Texas and Texas lives in me.

Also, remember...i spent most of my life in dallas. And dallas is just another massive metro, like Chicago or Los Angeles.

Bob Gow was my grandfather's business partner, @allegro (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=76).
He is a shady, slimy, skull and bonesman. And he took over the company when my grandfather died under VERY mysterious circumstances, VERY shortly after his association with GWB, WAY before i was born.

And now, not only is pretty much every fucking trace of my grandfather erased from the internet, there are file cabinets full of documents that had been taped shut, supposedly since the seventies, in our garage.

I opened the motherfuckers when i started putting two and two together about my grandfather's death not being an accident...and there was nothing there but dust.

Local lore is that my grandfather, William Jackson, was killed in a mafia hit.

But to me it's pretty obvious that it had something to do with Gow.

Keep reading about him and you will see that he has been implicated as a covert cia asset, as having taken part in the bay of pigs, in the fucking JFK killing...it's fucking disturbing.

THAT's why i believe in conspiracy shit.

http://www.madcowprod.com/index47bb.html

I choose to believe that my grandfather was not the same type of man as Gow.
I also think that's why he is gone.

When you here about all those trips to south america, and the indoor plant company and fake plant company, which was a cover for god knows what...my house is FULL of remnants of that enterprise.

I actually have the windows in my bedroom wreathed with the fake foliage.
It's kind of a creepy part of history.

So, seriously...do you see why conspiracy theories hit kind of close to home for me?

There isn't even a fucking traffic light in this town.
My grandfather supposedly ACCIDENTALLY crashed his car into a house and hit it just right so that the gas tank blew up.
He was 44, a multimillionaire, happily married, two daughters...
there was a gun in his glove box. He didn't carry a gun.
I have gone and walked the path he supposedly drove....it's UTTERLy fucking impossible.

Gow supposedly started the company on his own via Yale affiliations, then it eventually folded as a terrible failure. The company bankruptcy papers are available online. The company's failure was so catastrophic and stupid, it's taught in business schools. Yale skull and bones usually has no mob affiliations, though; just old East Coast money. The Bush family ain"t from Texas; they're old old old NE money.

Since there was no "Internet" before 1996 or so, I doubt he was erased; probably more like "never added." Not everything or everyone ended up on the Internet; somebody has to physically scan it or add it.

We know quite a few retired (Northern) air traffic controllers who moved to the Charlotte area and like it (closer to Matthews, though), but the summers might KILL me, I'd need a pool, lol. And my allergies are worrying me, I've heard horror stories. But the property taxes are so cheap compared to here, omg. We'd probably sell our house, buy a vacant lot and build new construction. Of all the Southern states, NC is the only one we could possibly tolerate. So long as I can stay away from fucking NASCAR.

but my grandfather started that company. he's a legend in this town.
AND, they managed to profit quite fantastically from SOMETHING...i still live on that money. My mother is set for life from that money.
I honestly am not so sure what all he was in to...i know we get oil checks and stock checks...there's also a farm.
Maybe some of the assets weren't part of "stratford of texas."
Someone else owns the feed yard now.

The only place i've ever seen the story of William Jackson starting that company in print is in one of those vanity local history books about this little town.

He was ERASED.

Half of the shit Gow was into was a cover for something else, some of it ADMITTEDLY.
Look up gow and the cia.

I REALLY don't think it had shit to do with the mob.

I think that gow or someone in their circle had my grandfather killed for something he KNEW...maybe something he threatened to come forward with.

edit: i've also been told by a couple of oldtimers around here that it would be in my best interests to stop digging.

I'm about 20 minutes from Lake Norman. It's a nice, ritzy area if you stay around or near Cornelius and Huntersville. The Summers are hit and miss lately. The past few years have been rainy but when it gets hot, it gets hot and it's that disgusting humid air type heat where you feel like you suffocate. Dude, no offense, but people can't "erase" the records that people are hosting on private sites. Like, they aren't going to hit ETS and erase this conversation. (If you Google your grandfather's name, this conversation on ETS now appears.) That's not how the Internet works; even the FBI can't do that. I've had contacts with the FBI re shit online since the BBS days in the 80s.

If some records are gone, it's probably because Google can't find it (Google changed its search algorithm relatively recently) or the host site is down or revised. Just like how the old ETS is gone.

Also, obviously, being a "legend" in a town of under 2000 people ... dude, come on.

This is something i've been researching for about 8 years.

Yes, it's tiny. However, there should be SOme trace, you know? don't you think it's strange that nowhere online is he even mentioned in association with SOT, but everyone HERE knows it was his company?
Don't you think it's odd that someone who was that wealthy, who was the president of the bank in the town where he lived, who had one of the first high capacity feed yards, who owned the ONLY restaurant in town,...that there is NO mention of him ANYWHERE?

No financial records, nothing. The ONLY place his ownership of Stratford of TExas is mentioned is in a book called God, Grass and Grit.

I think he was killed. I can FEEL it. And i think that various institutions were pressured into not posting any of those documents.

Gow has been accused of being a REALLY bad guy, time and time again, both by people around here who knew him and also quite publicly online. He's been implicated in everything from the bay of pigs to fucking 9/11!
Jackson was, by all accounts, a really GOOD guy. He set up scholarships and sent poor kids to college, with a stipulation that the kid didn't know who paid for it. He put new pews in the church, again, making sure it was kept secret.
Bush comes into the picture. Jackson dies mysteriously.
You can read articles all day long about Gow, but Jackson...not one word.
I just think there would be some trace.
And remember, all of the PHYSICAL documents linking Jackson to the company were stolen.
SOMETHING isn't right.

Now i'm going to shut up about it...i hijacked my own thread.

NO, that's not "odd" at all.

My maternal grandparents owned a machine rebuilding business pretty much my whole life. They owned a big factory building and employed a shit ton of people. Their primary customer was General Motors, the Tech Center facility in Warren, Michigan. They lived through the Depression, so they never believed in investing in stocks; instead, they invested in real estate; they bought properties for cash, they they sold them via Land Contract (they were the "bank" for people when interest rates were up near 18%). Also, they had whole life insurance policies, which nobody thought was a good idea but that's what people invested in when you survived the Depression. They had a summer home on Lake Huron my whole childhood. My mother went to a boarding school. My grandfather bought a new Cadillac for cash every 2 years. And they moved a lot, my grandma was something of a nomad. When they died, they didn't have a Trust; they had a Will and left my mom and her brother (my uncle) with a bunch of these properties in Land Contract (my mom and uncle received payments for years) plus a pretty fucking giant lump sum of cash, which my mom and uncle pissed through due to investments that tanked in the big crash in the 80s. Are my grandparents or their company on the Internet? No. The only mention of either of them is their obits. All that hard work, all those business contacts, my grandfather was laid out for THREE DAYS at the funeral home and that place was PACKED for all three days, he knew so many people and so many people loved him, and his funeral procession was literally miles long. But is his life measured by his Internet presence? No. And their money is gone because they didn't have it in a Trust. It's that simple. I was an Estate Planning Paralegal for years. A Trust is set up to MAKE money like an investment, and it's doled out in pieces. So, yeah, it can last a long time. It's likely that your grandfather worked FOR this Gow guy, but had his OWN established businesses SEPARATE from Gow, otherwise his assets would have been taken by the Bankruptcy Court. So the assets that remain in the Trust were his own assets from the businesses that he and your grandmother owned and operated on their own, separate from Gow; that's likely, anyway, otherwise the BK Court would have seized the assets. Trust me, you can hide from the mob, the CIA, whatever, but NOBODY hides anything from the Federal Bankruptcy Trustees. I've been a Subpoena'd Witness at a Bankruptcy Fraud trial; those people are brutal.

Anyway, in Estate Planning, we had Trust clients where the subject of the Trust (the person who died) died a LONG time ago, but the Trust is still living. That's the way it works. All those Hiltons? They're living off a Trust from a guy that died over a hundred years ago. That's the way it works. And, generally, good businesspeople keep their records private; if it ain't on the Internet, that's the way it's meant to be, unless it's a publicly-traded company, but even THEN, it shouldn't be info that you can just easily find via Google; THAT is bad business, not good.

NO, that's not weird at all, because who is going to mention him? It's a REALLY SMALL TOWN that doesn't EXIST outside of that town. So it wouldn't pick up any hits on the Internet / Google. The way stuff gets ONTO the Internet is somebody has to PUT it there, by a newspaper story, a press release, scanning a page from an old book, etc. Then, Google has to FIND it. This isn't some magic process. Also, "research" via Google isn't where you're gonna get real "research." The only real "research" you'd get is via a paid service like LexisNexis or Westlaw which of course you can't do. You are never going to get financial records via Google, ever. Sometimes "no" online info is good because it means there really isn't any dirt; believe me, if there was dirt, it would be on the Internet. Somebody would find it and post it. Because people LOVE dirt. But there isn't any. Even a coverup would be found and posted. No smoke, no flame. It probably means there's nothing. It means your grandfather was a normal boring everyday small town guy with money and he wasn't even implicated in anything so there's nothing.

See this:

http://www.livestockweekly.com/papers/00/02/03/hindsight.asp

All the outstanding stock of Cactus Feeders Inc., has been acquired by Stratford of Texas Inc., which headquarters in Houston and owns Stratford Feedyard at Stratford as well as having purchased a 30,000-head feedlot now under construction at Dalhart.

See also this:

https://mycpa.cpa.state.tx.us/coa/servlet/cpa.app.coa.CoaGetTp?Pg=tpid&Search_Nm=stratford%20of%20texas%20&Button=search&Search_ID=30000599552

My guess, because I'm paid to do research, LOL, is that Gow started and owned Stratford of Texas, Inc., but your Grandfather started and owned Stratford Feedyard and became business partners with Gow relating to that feedyard and the purchase of that new feedlot, which is how your Grandpa got to keep all his assets when Stratford of Texas, Inc. made all those shitty investments and went under, because your Grandfather parted company with Gow when the shit hit the fan.

Also, re your Grandfather's accident: You were in a terrible car crash, a very weird car crash. What if you'd died in that crash? Would people be whispering that it was a mob hit? That you were murdered? Sometimes tragic accidents just happen. Car crashes happen hundreds of times a day. I happen to know at least 5 people who were killed in car crashes.

Jesus, @allegro (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=76) .
You are fucking GREAT at research.
Cactus Feeders IS the feedlot.

And my grandfather made frequent trips to houston.

His name was William Neil Jackson, if you ever get bored...:)

As far as the car crash...i fell asleep at the wheel doing 90 on the highway and flipped it five times.
My grandfather drove what appears to be an impossible path on a short residential street with a 20 mph speed limit that ended at a perpendicular street...you know...like a T shape... and crashed into someone's porch, blowing up the car. Now THAT is a weird car crash.

Some say that he had a heart attack or stroke with his foot on the gas. But if he'd had a heart attack or stroke and dead footed it, he wouldn't have been able to drive the path to crash into the porch, because it would have taken steering (from what i can tell examining the site)

He burned to death in the car, btw.
There were no witnesses.

So to me, it had to have been a bizarre suicide. But as far as i know, he had no reason to commit suicide.

That's why i wonder about murder. To me, it's one or the other...suicide or murder.
And considering all the creepy allegations floating around about gow, i suspect the latter. Did you read any of the unsavory rumors about gow? here's a bit "In an update on our earlier report about Bush’s year in “tropical plants,” the man Bush was working for during the year he spent traveling Guatemala and Central America (see pt I), (http://www.madcowprod.com/index46.html) former Zapata Offshore President Robert Gow, was at the same time embroiled in a takeover attempt of the notorious United Fruit Company (on whose Board sat his father, Ralph Gow, a long-time Director), and that while Bush was there supposedly “looking over tropical plants,” the company was actively participating in a counter-insurgency program with the Guatemalan Government as part of the CIA’s Operation Condor."

It's the old people that say it was a mob hit. It gets brought up at every fucking funeral i attend. I've also heard "your grandad could have been president" three or four times. It's very cryptic.
But i don't suspect the mob. I suspect gow.

But again...JESUS! I can't believe you found those things! Thank you for looking into it!

also, @allegro (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=76) btw, my grandfather died in 72, according to my mom, BEFORE SOT went under.
She also just told me that we lost about $1,000,000 in stock when it did go under. According to my great uncle, we took the biggest hit in SOT stock. My crazy grandmother, (who really was schizophrenic,) refused to sell the stock for "sentimental reasons" because it was her husbands.

my mother also told me that two other names involved in all of this are Doug Florence and JA Whittenburg the third, who was his MAIN business partner.

Now that I know more info, I can do more research. I'm kind of a research addict. Lol.

Dra508 is from New England, but she recently moved to TX with her boyfriend.

Speaking of Charlotte, NC... I grew up there. Moved to Texas in 2000, spent a few years in Austin, the rest in Houston. I love it. True, Texas gets a lot of grief (some of it very deserved), but in general it's just a really great place. It's hard to put into words, but there's something about this state I really love. The only thing I don't like is that there's not much of a Fall season, it kind of jumps from summer straight into winter, then a very short spring & bam! Back into the heat.

Side note: the humidity in North Carolina is absolute child's play compared to the humidity/heat of South Texas. Not quite as bad as Florida, but pretty damn close.

But where I lived, you were basically considered a horrible human being if you weren't a heterosexual conservative Christian, and I spent a lot of time biting my tongue in order to make sure I didn't commit career suicide.

I went to Tech, so I know Levelland, and the exact type you're talking about... I was so happy to get out of there.
My mom is from the panhandle, and I have a lot of family there so I'm pretty familiar with Amarillo, Stratford, Dumas, etc, too @elevenism (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=2475). Ever been through Canyon? :)
I've also lived in DFW and have a lot of family in that area, too.
I'm a military brat, so I've bounced around, but El Paso is home. Anyone else from/been through EP?

I love Old 97's! Sums it perfectly. :o
philip (the drummer) worked with my dad when the '97s were first starting out, so i grew up with them.
it's been cool...permanently guestlisted...i've seen them over 50 times. my first time in a bar was to see them (i was 14 and there were about ten people there.)
so many cool stories...for instance, for my birthday one year i got a cassette tape of Too Far To Care (before it came out) with eight extra songs on it.
they are one of my favorite bands of all time. of course, it was such a huge deal knowing them as a teenager, you know? So i don't know how much i would love them if i hadn't known them.

as far as backwards ass people, natalielair and theimage13 ... i don't hardly leave the house so i wouldn't really know! my hair is two feet long and i have 1" holes in my lobes and 1/4 inch holes in my conches, so i DO get funny looks sometimes at the Alsups and the post office.

Amarillo, though, is getting to be pretty fucking hip, oddly enough.

i've been here for the better part of three years, but i spent most of my adult life in urban dallas.
i LOVE dallas and i miss the shit out of it but i don't really have much of a reason to justify moving back.

I was born in Tyler and have lived in Dallas for the past 12 years. I like it all right. I thought about moving to Austin but I've got kids now and I don't like hippies.

Anyone else from/been through EP?

I was supposed to be there for a week, but the job ended up getting canceled. For which I was relieved...there wasn't one single good thing that anyone had to say about where I was supposed to be working, and the living situation wasn't slated to be great from what I heard either. But never actually been there, so that's all just third party info.

Not surprised to hear people knocking El Paso... I'm used to that. Despite whatever you heard, it is a great city. I love it here.
Just curious, what was the job?

You know you live in Texas when.....

You give a viewing of your bf's rent house when the woman looking to rent it says: "I don't care much about the master bath and closet, just as long as my gun safe fits in there."
