General chat about CULT MOVIES. What are you watching? What do you love?

Post, post, post.

So since I downloaded it last week I've been watching FUEGO over and over again. It really is one of the most entertaining movies I've seen.

I don't know if it can be classified as a cult movie, but I always had a soft spot for Lynch's Dune. It's a mess to be sure, and it has more flaws than I care to remember, but something, just something in the movie hints at the grandeur of the book. As a comparison, although the TV series was more faithful to the material and had a much more organised structure, and I enjoyed watching it, I never really felt the sheer epicness of the book. The movie, on the other hand, amidst its batshit craziness, did have an epic feel to it.

I think even though the movie doesn't quite hold together as a whole it has so many great moments that you can't help but like it. Of course it is also extremely pretty.

Dune was the only movie Lynch ever made where he didn't have final cut which I think may have effected it a lot as well.

Favorite cult flick of all time:

THE ROOM

I just watched DUNE again and it really set in this time that every single line of dialogue in the movie is exposition. I don't think there is a single attempt to build character, empathy or naturalism of any sort. I think it works brilliantly as a literary piece observing very formal expository conventions and also has a lot of wit.

Favorite cult flick of all time:

THE ROOMI still need to see that.

At some point, it would be really cool to have some sort of ETS online viewing where we can all make fun of it as we watch it.

let's just say i'm a fan of strange cult sci-fi from the 60s and 70s...especially if there are scantily clad women involved. as an aside, i also love DUNE. hated it when i was young, but a rewatch set me straight...

if horror also counts, i've got a ton of guilty and not so guilty pleasures from the genre that could be considered cult. some i love because they're legitimate classics (the sentinel, the wicker man), and some because they're absolutely ridiculous (night of the demons & more).

edit: regarding beyond the valley of the dolls (below)... i more or less feel the same. like it OK, but that ending is a complete mindfuck!

I watched "Beyond The Valley of the Dolls" last night. Was a bit dull except for the insanity of the last thirty minutes.

A modern film that deserves cult status is Machete. It's probably the most outrageous, hilarious and cheesy action film of all time. Machete is one of those movies that are so bad they're awesome.

Oh yeah, Steven Seagal is one of the main bad guys in this one too.

Define 'cult'.

Well I believe a cult movie is one that satisfies the following criteria: a) was either a financial flop or low budget/limited distribution to begin with and b) has since found a significant and/or dedicated fan base (who find the movie good or awesomely bad) and a wider distribution through different kinds of media.

Define 'cult'.

I'm not being specific in the thread title - "cult" was just the best catchall title I could think of.

There was a thread we had on the old forum where we discussed these sorts of movies I just can't remember what it was called?

I'm sure UHF counts. As a fan of Seinfeld and The Nanny, and somebody that likes some of Weird Al's works, I just had to check it out. And as a huge fan of South Park, I also loved Cannibal! The Musical and Orgazmo.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's sometimes fascinating to see how those movies defy such odds in the long-run. Some of my friends have watched them with me, and they wonder how those movies can actually exist or make it.

i was going to mention donnie darko as well...

just off the top of my head:
platoon
the shining
brasil
barton fink
pi
requiem for a dream
the machinist
memento
the shipping news

there're probably many more...

and don't know if these two fit in the category, but it's my yearly tradition to watch bad santa and groundhog day at about this time of year.

It's hard to explain. I just love how weird and stream-of-conscious it is. It's like having a really bizarre dream. There's no plot, but there are so many unforgettable moments. It's unsettling and dysfunctional, but it also has its share of beautiful scenes. Like the bathtub scene at the end: it's gross watching that kid stuff his mouth with food while his mom washes his hair, and yet there's something so captivating and memorable about it.

right. i might have stretched the definition of a cult movie too far. they work though, when you think of a cult movie not only as of a something rather offstream but also of something that had a great impact..

mementoI never thought of that as a cult movie, but yeah, I guess it would qualify. Then yes, definitely Memento. Times a thousand.

Also, I guess Oldboy would qualify, too. So, yeah. Oldboy. I've talked about my love for that movie ad nauseam around here, so I'll refrain from saying anything more.

Gummo just disgusted and disturbed me. Made me really uncomfortable. That movie was horrible. Horrible. I throw around "worst movie ever" a lot more than I probably should, but all hyperbole aside, Gummo really was one of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen.

They Live: The part where he first puts on the glasses and walks down the street is so awesome... one of my favorite scenes in a movie ever. The movie builds up so slow and the pacing is completely off, but it's all worth it for that one scene.

Halloween idea (or anytime of the year, for that matter)

Also, I'm hoping we'll someday see Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League. JJ Abrams has worked with Peter Weller on two different projects.... JJ seems like he would be a fan of Buckaroo.

and let's not forget about this one here. It's "only" 5 minutes long, but it feels like forever. Every aspect of this scene is wrong, and it's the least exciting fight you'll ever see.

EDIT: watch it, and when he gets up at the 2:40 min. mark, just think about how you are barely halfway through!

Also Four Lions... But Chris Morris deserves his own thread. But like spinal tap, more or less every line in four lions is quotable
"has you dad ever bought a jaffa orange?"
"i dunno... Maybe once or twice"
"he's buying nukes for Israel - he's a Jew"

"fathers for justice have teamed up with the real IRA... Nightmare scenario"
