Saw this today. Was quite impressed with the cinematography, music, stunt-driving (!), and of course Jake Gyllenhaal being a total creep. One of the best I've seen this year, which isn't saying much I know but definitely worth price of admission.

I saw the film last Sunday. Man, it was fucking good. I'm hoping for some Oscar nods for Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, and Riz Ahmed. Here's my review: http://thevoid99.blogspot.com/2014/11/nightcrawler.html

I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Gyllenhaal turned in a fantastic performance, but it's lack of real structure turned me off and it had probably one of the worst scores I've ever heard. I wanted to punch James Newton Howard in the face so hard for that garbage.

Loved the idea, Jake's performance. HATED the score and the cinematography. No need for the insane amount of grain in most of the dark scenes. If they wanted to go for the "digital handheld" look, they failed as I focused more on the annoyance rather than the story. It added nothing. I would loved to have seen this directed by Fincher.

But Man...fucking props to the BEST ACTOR OF THE YEAR!

I haven't seen the film yet, but from what I understand, the score is suppose to be give the impression that you're suppose to route for Jake's character because in his mind, he IS inspirational.

I get that, and I figured that's what the case was, but it just flat out does not work, in my opinion. It cheapens the movie in almost every way.

I thought the movie was amazing. Jake Gyllenhaal could get an oscar for this one.

Saw this today. Loved it.

I like how its a psych thriller and also an underdog inspiration story. The two together make a hilarious film especially tonally. God wtf.

Yeah, in the DP/30 interview posted up there Gyllenhaal said when he first met the writer/director, he said that this was a straight-up success story, and they burst out laughing. Its an interesting choice, having this guy be rewarded for going down this path. I find the guy oddly likable, as well. Or at least watchable. I think everyone, deep down inside, could relate to him on some level. I mean, who hasn't wanted to do what he does to people when they give him shit? Having no empathy is kind of like freedom for him.

Finally saw this one last night. I was blown away. I can't believe this film didn't get more Oscar consideration, especially Gyllenhaal. His performance was outstanding.
