View Full Version : What's your dream setlist?

The touring cycle is over, and that means it's time to go crazy thinking about NIN live again! A friend of mine and I were talking about this and both decided to make our dream setlists. This doesn't mean songs you want to see live in no particular order, this doesn't mean something realistic that could get played in the future and seems somewhat likely with just a few odd things thrown in, this doesn't mean anything about production or lineup. This is all about the ideal NIN show you can dream of, with a maximum of around 30 songs to cap it off.

Assume that the venue, production and lineup all allow for whatever setlist you come up with. No songs are off the table, no arrangement is too complex and no pattern has to be followed. Think March of the Pigs should be in it, but at the end of the set? Go for it. Build from the ground up what you think would be the greatest possible NIN show you can imagine, what you think would have the best flow, order, and presentation.

This is what I came up with:

Pinion
Reptile (with the intro cut, so that the crashing guitars of Pinion lead into that buzzsaw-sounding wall of guitars)
Wish
Vessel
Sin
March of the Pigs
Head Down
Heresy
The Line Begins to Blur
Sanctified
Closer
Mr. Self Destruct
Just Like You Imagined
The Becoming
The Frail
The Wretched
Burn
Down In It
Eraser
Suck
Satellite
The Great Destroyer
The Greater Good (used almost as an encore break, done like on LITS where the stage was hidden)
Happiness In Slavery
Dead Souls
La Mer
The Great Below

--Encore Break--

In Two
Ruiner
Even Deeper
In This Twilight (w/ Zero-Sum Outro)

For me, the idea of Reptile opening a show is incredible, and I'm fairly sure it's never been done before. Having Pinion offer buildup with a curtain over the stage, then having that curtain fall as Reptile's guitars kick in and the green wall of lights flood through the descending curtain and out into the crowd is a mental image I'd love to see become a reality. Not all of my favorite songs are in this set, and some of them I could probably find a way to change out, but as a whole this is, to my eyes, a setlist that would provide almost everything I love about NIN, transition fairly smoothly from song to song with little work necessary, and allow for a lengthy, pleasing show with a lot of variety.

I was just putting a playlist together the other day and was thinking how cool it would be to open a live set with Reptile. I like your idea of the Pinion buildup. Another thing that would be cool was if that Great Destroyer breakdown just morphed into Happiness in Slavery. Logical (wishful) next step from those few European performances where there were snippets of Happiness in it.

Basically a mix up of recent tours - 2009-14. I wanted a bit of '94 too - The Only Time and Happiness In Slavery, but I couldn't work out where to put them. Imagining them soundchecked, appearing on the printed set list, and then just not played. Just 'cause we love a tease, right?

After going to a show on this tour, I know I could care less what's being played or not, I'd still want CitiBank Platinum American Express, it's everywhere you want to be if you wanna pay three times the price seats. But if I did buy those tickets...I'd prefer to see these:

It may be probably about 20 songs realistically in a set, so, here's 20:

There are a few that I haven't seen played live that I'd really like to see, but I don't think I'd want to design an entire setlist. Spatter it in as treats with the usual awesome stuff and I'd be really happy.

I'd want to see Last, Somewhat Damaged, the Great Below, Starfuckers, Happiness in Slavery, Sunsports..... Put one or two of those into a regular setlist and I'd be happier than a pig in shit.

A dream setlist for more elegant NIN shows, in elegant theatres, wich is something I'd elegantly expect very soon. Trent more sitting at the piano or playing synths with the band than standing guitar-armed. Stage similar to the Ghosts section of the LITS tour. A lot of instruments here and there.

1. The Frail

In a bizzare twist, Tool announced they'll be playing "Vicarious Methods Of Escape" for the handful of October shows this year.

Live @ Naughty&Naked night club (it probably exists somewhere):
Trent and the band dressed in suits, every instrument filtered to adjust the atmosphere of the venue: low light, smoke and cocaine-addicted slow dancers.

1. Closer
2. Came Back Haunted
3. Reptile (Dancey-Beats version)
4. The Perfect Drug
5. The Only Time

*Mariqueen Maandig comes in*

6. The Space in Between (HTDA cover)
7. Fur Lined (HTDA cover)
8. Candy (Morphine cover)

*Mariqueen leaving, sexual comment from the audience, Trent punches the guy in the face TKO'ing him*

9. Meet Your Master (bondage gear comes out of nowhere)
10. The Warning
11. Piggy
12. Survivalism (Tweaker Ray remix)

13. The Beginning of the End (Ladytron remix, dancers' expressions become naughtier, they start to walk around, people shift uncomfortably in their seats)
14. The Hand That Feeds (all of a sudden every girl is naked, lap dancing on the audience at fast speed)
15. No, You Don't (the situation goes completely out of hand, the line between dance and rape becomes non-existent, fluids everywhere)

*Police breaks in, everyone runs, fights, someone still fucking on the ground, the band keeps playing the main progression from the song until is forced to leave the stage. Trent slams guitars and mics on the ground and throws the entire drumkit at the bartender without a reason, crashing the entire liquor collection. Out on caution, will post on Twitter after a couple hours about the unacceptable treatment received, and promises he will never play the venue again. Feminists rise up (I don't know why).*

I've been thinking about it, and I've come to the conclusion that not any one show could fit in all the different aspects of NIN that I would want to see. I would need like 3-4 different sets/NIN band line-ups for everything I would want to see: Tension style set-up w/back-up singers, Pino, Josh + rest of the band playing pretty much all of Hesitation Marks and Pretty Hate Machine. Trent + Atticus + 2007 band playing Year Zero material + Ghosts/Soundtracks + HTDA+NTAE? 2005 band w/ Jeordie/Aaron playing With Teeth + The Slip material. Old School Setlist with 1994 band, but playing Broken/TDS/TF material.

Tension Style:
Now I'm Nothing
Terrible Lie
Copy Of A
Came Back Haunted
Down In It
Find My Way
Something I Can Never Have
Satellite
Sin
All Time Low
Ringfinger
I Would For You
In Two
Sanctified (With Sunspots rif/synths)
Everything
Head Like A Hole
While I'm Still Here
Black Noise
Various Methods Of Escape

Trent + HTDA + 2007 band:

The Beginning Of The End
The Good Soldier
Me, I'm Not
Keep It Together w/ Mariqueen
Ice Age w/ Mariqueen
The Space In Between w/ Mariqueen
The Loop Closes w/ Mariqueen
Dear World
Capital G
My Violent Heart
The Warning
God Given
Intriguing Possibilities w/ Atticus
Hand Covers Bruise w/ Atticus
Capture and Fenway w/ Atticus
Branches & Bones
Meet Your Master
The Great Destroyer
Survivalism

Agree on that. Nice nod to his hero and mentor, as some people predicted might happen. I don't have much of an attachment to that song though. Don't think it's enough to get me to fly to Chicago.

agreed, that setlist was less than impressive, especially after a three yr layoff. hopefully it was just to round the band into form, but i'm not optimistic.

Grimy, apocalyptic, violent, electronic and with a lot of songs referencing dreaming, a sense of derealization and detachment/desperation to reconnect with something, AKA everything being alive in 2017 is about, apparently. Tried not to overthink this one and didn't even bother trying to include the usual staples.

The entire trilogy hasn't been released yet, so I can't really make an actual list right now for what I currently have in mind, but I have wondered what it would be like to have setlist the mostly consisted of songs from Pretty Hate Machine, Broken and The Downward Spiral played alongside songs from Not The Actual Events and Add Violence and whatever the third EP might be. If anything, I'd actually hope something like that happens.

Granted, any other songs from all the albums would also do good/great in their own ways if and whenever possible, since this is Nine Inch Nails. (Especially songs from With Teeth, Year Zero and Hesitation Marks as far as later releases go, but that's just me.)

It's a good thing "G" and "D" rhyme. makes it easier to actually change the lyrics to this.

Rather than adding my ideal song list, I'd love more than anything to have a little more talking during it - stories, comments, anything. I know that's doesn't seem like his thing (at least since the time I've been going to the concerts) and I suppose it would seem contrary to the style of the concerts, but I'd really treasure that.

There are so many songs I want to see live. But really, I would die to see a show where something goes wrong so I can witness something like "Something's gonna get broken!"

Anyone at this show? Where was this? Was this the last song? was it meant to be the last song? How long did trent destroy shit and did he say anything else?

My dream setlist would have Last (swapped out with Gave up) and a deep cut off The Fragile. Somewhat Damaged, No you don't, or We're in this together would suite me just fine. Honorable mention to Only, Right where it belongs, Sanctified, Big come down, and of course Burning Bright and Great Destroyer... the next two songs that were to be played at DFN before the show was stopped.

I've definitely heard Piggy, Reptile, Sin Terrible Lie and Something I can never have, enough live for one lifetime, despite the fact I still love those songs. I get that Closer, Wish and HLAH must always be played, and that's totally cool and understandable. I just think some variety would be nice. I seemed to have missed my chance being broke during the 06-09 touring years. When the setlist was filled with a few deep cuts from night to night.

Yeah, this was the video that was originally posted. I see the city now, though. I'm guessing it was https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/nine-inch-nails/2005/wachovia-spectrum-philadelphia-pa-5bd6f798.html ? So it was the last song.

When I made that setlist, I was thinking about making a parallel to the Woodstock 1994 performance, but instead of listening songs from, Pretty Hate Machine, Broken and The Downward Spiral, I'd go with songs from The Fragile, And All That Could Have Been [Still] and With Teeth. If anything, it really was an imaginary Woodstock 2005.

Thanks to Not The Actual Events and Add Violence coming out, it'll be now easier to make Woodstock 1994 parallels of other releases. I'm sure it's because I've watched that performance so much, that I wanted to see if I could use it as some sort of setlist formula from other songs and album eras. And it was also just for kicks more than anything.

Not sure what a dream setlist would be, just so long as it flows and has contrast to balance out the energy of the audience for a good 2-3 hours.
And that's always been the toughest part for me. Interestingly enough for me, the start and the ending are actually sometimes very easy. It's the middle of the setlist that's the hard part for me.

With the band playing 2-3 shows per venue for the upcoming tour, will the setlist be the same for both shows or will it be different? Plus will we finally see Happiness in Slavery played live again along with Sin, Down In It, We're in This Together, Starfuckers Inc?

I say it's unlikely because it hasn't been played since they were touring for The Downward Spiral. I feel like if they were to bring it back, it would be a different version of it. A noisy electronic heavy version of it could possibly work.

You can't Now I'm Nothing without Terrible Lie.

Can't I?

I love Terrible Lie but as a live staple it's minutes burned that I'd sooner see go elsewhere, and Now I'm Nothing for me has always had this kind of "welcome to the world NIN", almost retrospective feel to it as an opener that I think makes it more than capable of serving as an introduction to another track.

song never played by the band before
song that hasn't been played in a long time
a Trent Reznor/Other projects
a special song for you
a fan favorite song (not necessary a hit)

I'd choose

since i haven't heard "bad witch" yet i can't come up with a setlist. but I envy the fans in the U.S., because they possibly could enjoy something like my dream-setlist that I won't ever get to see in europe: to experience nin like kinda brandnew a bit.

75% not the actual events / add violence / bad witch (like nearly every single song)
20% "older" stuff, including "surprises" like "sunspots", "in two", "head down", "demon seed", "the four of us are dying", or whatever fits to the main content
only 5% (equals 1-2 songs) for the every-fuckin-show-essentials: "the hand that feeds" (deleted), "march of the pigs" (deleted), "closer" (deleted), "head like a hole" (maybe), "wish" (maybe), "hurt" (maybe, the problem with closing the show could be solved with "the great below". or "in this twilight", "beside you in time", "something i can never have" instead maybe? i'd prefer "the great below"). would be nice to have "the background world" as neverending last song too.

NOT to be included: "only" (far better on tape than live), "came back haunted" (a bit too boring i'm afraid), "satelite" (wtf), "less than" (boring), "survivalism" & some more of "year zero" (politically too-obvious-reznor is rubbish)

I was thinking, Trent said once that his biggest complain with a big tour , is that sometimes is kind of boring play the same songs night after night, and with all these theories, stories behind the new album, it would be nice if Trent create a different setlist each night, but telling a different story every night, what songs you can use to create a story, how many different setlist/stories can be told?

It could be like a play
You are in a theater but you will have a different ending every night

The Fragile. All of it. Plus Deviations with lyrics. Preformed a handful of times next year for the 20th anniversary.
In this day and age where bands do perform complete albums live, has anyone done a double album yet?

Pink Floyd - The Wall comes to mind immediately.
Dream Theater did it with their last album.
Tommy by The Who? Not sure if it was played in full.

Day 1: The Downward Spiral all the way through + songs on PHM and Broken.

I've been toying around with making a score-focused setlist, but that shit turned to be harder than making a NIN one.
As usual with my dream setlits, I spent more time on arranging the proper order flow than trimming down the songs.

Spent a couple of hours on this, here goes:

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross feat. Robin, Ilan, Alessandro, a string section, horn section (or fuck it, make it a proper orchestra) + additional guests

Hand Covers Bruise
In Motion
A Familiar Taste
Pinned and Mounted
Hidden in Snow
Quake Theme (Track 1) (shortened, cut after heavy part ends)
Theme for Tetsuo The Bullet Man
Driver Down
Oraculum
Before the Flood (feat. Gustavo Santaolalla)
How Brittle the Bones
Intriguing Possibilities
Pieces Form the Whole
Broken Glass / The Night Drive (aka Patriots Day medley/suite)
Appearances
A Minute to Breathe
A Minute After

~ intermission ~

What Have We Done to Each Other?
Sugar Storm
She Reminds Me of You
Clue One / Clue Two
Magnetic
Immigrant Song (feat. Karen O)
Cut Into Pieces
What If We Could?
A Thousand Details
Technically, Missing
An Itch
Four Enclosed Walls
Justified Response
Still Gone
The Gentle Hum of Anxiety
Great Bird of Prey
The Sound of Forgetting
Is Your Love Strong Enough? (feat. Mariqueen)

I'm having chills down my spine just imagining how most of these will sound in live setting and with full orchestra. Trent, you have to make it happen!

If you can choose a setlist, but not only the songs, you can choose the way they have played the songs along those years and the visuals, like a greatest hits/visuals tour just for you. what songs would you choose?

I would gladly pay full admission price if the set was JUST the Perfect drug and that was it.
I wouldn't feel cheated at all. Take a flight somewhere, get a hotel for a couple nights, suffer through a couple opening bands and then... you hear those mandolins open the show, and then 5 and a half mins later, he thanks the audience and the lights come on. I wouldn't be mad.

Not adding anything that hasn't yet been played this tour, this is my desire for two nights in Vegas. That said if I can get Last, Happiness in the SLavery, The Perfect Drug, and And All That Could Have Been nothing else will matter. If I got to add any songs that haven't been played yet, obviously We're In This Together, The Mark Has Been Made, Ruiner, Leaving Hope, Down in it, In Two, The Line Begins to Blur, Ripe with Decay, and fuck yeah to Tetsuo. I'd be down with any of their score work being thrown in as well in any capacity.

Not my absolute "dream setlist" per say, but I've tried to come up with the best possible setlist I could think of, that would be realistic with the Cold/Black/Infinite master setlist, that respects Trent's attention to flow and climaxes and that. And here's what I've got.

Mr Self Destruct
The Perfect Drug
Terrible Lie
Last
The Frail
Me I’m Not
The Becoming
I Do Not Want This
The Big Come Down
God Break Down The Down
Over And Out
Help Me I'm In Hell
Happiness In Slavery
Copy Of A
Less Than
Starfuckers
Wish

Somewhat Damaged
The Day The World Went Away
And All That Could Have Been
Hurt

Ending with Wish instead of Head Like A Hole : they've done it in Vegas back in June.
Playing both TPD and HIS : they've done it in Vegas this time around.
Opening the encore with SD : they did it at Riot Fest last year.

To think that this is a realistic setlist is pretty damn crazy.

Unlikely to happen, COVID-19 outbreak or no COVID-19 outbreak, but:

NIN at Wacken. Like with the 2009 Sonisphere set (http://www.nin.wiki/2009/08/02_Knebworth,_England), there is a deliberately large number of quieter songs to see if the more toxic metalheads attending would freak out (but still enough heavier numbers at the beginning to pull a bait-and-switch). Aiming for about an hour.

1. The Downward Spiral (first half is pre-recorded, serving as the intro)
2. No, You Don't
3. Love Is Not Enough
4. Gave Up
5. The Great Below
6. 1 Ghosts I

I don't think I'll ever complain about the "singles onslaught" in a setlist ever again after this.

This "dream setlist" is partially comprised of songs that I have not yet seen live and want to see (called out in italics) – including a few that NIN have never played. It's what I'd consider a dream setlist at this point in time, but it's different from the one I assembled a few years ago and would likely be different next year. I've included a few live staples like March of the Pigs and Head Like a Hole (despite the fact I've seen them at nearly every NIN show I've attended) because they get the entire crowd into it.

"Still" from beginning to end (sequentially; identical to the album version), then select deep cuts that fit the theme of the album in the same stripped down format (The Great Below, Ripe (With Decay), Underneath It All, ILFTJY,F, Zero-Sum), with a final NIN live interpretation of At The Heart Of It All (with RDJ if he wants to guest), with additional emotional pads and samples that ends the set on a confusing note: somber, triumphant, distraught, paranoid, but with a glimmer of hope twinkling out to the NIN logo set against a setting sun, then fade to black.

Who else would shoot jizz onto the ceiling experiencing that live?

I've always liked Maybe Just Once and thought it was much less cheesy than Purest Feeling. If they gave it a bit of a heavier makeover and made it sound a little more sinister, it could really be a badass song!
Yes, I agree! As tongue-and-cheek as my suggestion sounds, I do have genuine love for the song, and I think it could've been included on PHM (or on one of the singles at least).

I've been saying it for ages: this sort of show would be a graceful way to age NIN, if they still feel like doing it in fifteen years.

Some just-for-fun speculation on a couple of setlists that would be interesting to see at Red Rocks this September… Always thought With_Teeth would sound really interesting played all the way through, especially with this lineup of the band. After all, a lot of those tracks have been popping up of late after being out of rotation for so long. Would also be cool to see some other Hesitation Marks material make a comeback. "In Two" and "While I'm Still Here/Black Noise" were always really intense in the live setting back in '13...would be really awesome to see them played again! Who knows, at this rate, maybe some of these songs will make in into those sets? Guess we'll find out in a month's time!

Night 1 [09.02.22]:

All the Love in the World
You Know What You Are?

Another "pipe dream" setlist concept, this time for the upcoming Cuyahoga Falls show exactly one month from today (!!!). Obviously this is ridiculously long and would come out to being like 3.5 hours or something insane like that but I thought it'd be interesting to break the set up into the various live "incarnations" of NIN, featuring some of (if not all) the members from certain eras and focusing on songs prominently featured in those eras accordingly. Clearly we aren't going to get this simply due to logistics but it'd be really interesting to see if some of these songs (and guests) actually do show up in the final setlist. I do have a sense it's definitely going to be a "special" show (which, considering the sets we've seen thus far, that's definitely saying something).

you bastard

Was at that show and trust me, when it happened... I pretty much completely lost my shit hahaha

In all seriousness though, the way they pulled that off was so insanely cool, especially with the "fake out" of The Hand That Feeds and then cutting into The Frail... Here I figured they were about to wrap up the main set and then take a break before coming out for an encore but then low and behold...One of the best NIN shows I've ever been to, probably one of the best concerts I've ever been to honestly. This past tour was nuts! I'll certainly miss this particular arrangement but I'm very excited to see what new direction he takes things in next.

Anyway, I know I've put a bunch of totally speculative stuff up here just for fun but to be honest my real "dream setlist" was that Cuyahoga Falls show. Never going to see something like that ever again!

Hey everyone! This is a NIN fan setlist live compilation i based off of one i posted a few days ago. I spent a solid 10 hours working on this, and I'd really like if you checked it out! its about 65 songs spanning from the Purest Feeling / '88 shows all the way to the newest EPs / CBI tour! It's about 5 and a half hours long so it should last a good working session.

(There's a few fuckups in here)

Came up with an idea for a dream setlist focused on NIN's more patently industrial sounding material. The funny thing is both NIN's oldest and newest material is the most industrial focused from my POV with how experimental and grimy the Trilogy is and obviously how noisy Broken and TDS are.

NIN INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH SETLIST:

Preshow Music: Angelo Badalamenti - The Fireman

Branches/Bones
Wish
Mr. Self Destruct
Ahead Of Ourselves
Sin
March Of The Pigs
Dear World,
Heresy
Last

She's Gone Away

Happiness In Slavery

Burn
Ruiner
Not Anymore
The Becoming
The Idea Of You
I Do Not Want This
A Warm Place
Somewhat Damaged

Shit Mirror
The Frail into Eraser
Burning Bright (Field On Fire)
Reptile

(Band leaves stage for a minute and does encore)

Gave Up
I'm Not From This World
Hurt
The Background World
Over And Out (Band leaves one by one during song's ambient outro)

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have consumed so much NIN over the years - and have so many personal favorites - that I have no idea what constitutes a "top hit." That said, if certain songs started disappearing altogether, I would be pretty disappointed. The best way to ensure a proper mix of deep cuts and fan favorites is to schedule a mini-residency and change things up nightly.
