On Blu-Ray I only have Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Bottle Rocket, and Videodrome. I have many more on DVD, but I'm too drunk/lazy to get up and look at my collection at the moment. . .

On the topic of the Criterion Videodrome Blu-Ray, I think it is awesome that the soundtrack is mono on that one. I recently had an argument with a friend of mine who thinks that is lame. . .

My Criterion Collection edition of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was one of the best movie purchases I have ever made. Love that film and love all the special features that come along with it.

Man, I wish Criterion would hop on Cronenberg's 'Crash'. The DVD's been out of print for ages and the movie's well-deserving of the Criterion treatment.

Their 'The Red Shoes' looks AMAZING. Hard to imagine how much more life it brought to what was already one of my favorites. Highly recommended to EVERYONE.

I'll have to put together a list of mine.

I'm still waiting for Y Tu Mama Tambien to come to Criterion. They said they were working on a special release for that film. Plus, I heard rumors that Badlands might be coming thru Criterion due to new transfer that was supervised by Malick and his longtime editor Billy Weber. That needs to come out on Criterion.

I really wish they'd hop on a Blu-Ray edition of Brazil... the current Blu-Ray printing is quite incomplete.

Fear and Loathing on BD looks ridiculous.

My Blu-Ray Collection:
Antichrist
Black Moon
Blow Out
Bottle Rocket
Cronos
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
The Darjeeling Limited
Days Of Heaven
Dazed And Confused
Diabolique
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Fish Tank
For All Mankind
The Great Dictator
House
Island Of Lost Souls
The Killing
Life During Wartime
Modern Times
Naked
Paths Of Glory
The Phantom Carriage
Solaris
Something Wild
The Thin Red Line
The Times Of Harvey Milk
Videodrome

I also own all of the Wes Anderson flicks that are currently NOT on Criterion Blu-Ray.

I'm still bitter that B&N ended their most recent 50% off sale the day before Rushmore and 12 Angry Men came out. I got close to buying the Three Colors trilogy during the sale, but I didn't know enough about it to make the purchase. Very much looking forward to the Godzilla release, though. It's awesome that Criterion seems to be releasing a bit more horror/monster films lately. The release of Island Of Lost Souls was fucking phenomenal.

You have the BFI, I have their bluray of Herostratus and the Kenneth Anger shorts, they are exceptional.

Also region free bluray players are so cheap these days why don't you just go that way? I got a $150 Kogan bluray player and it is great.

I'm living without a television at the moment and watching everything from my mac. I'm a bit reluctant to flash the drive to enable it to play region free (I have a reverse Midas touch with technology). Thanks for the recommendation though, a TV and bluray player would be a good investment.

I can't remember where I saw it online, but I think Criterion may be releasing Badlands. I had bought The Thin Red Line on bluray when Barnes and Noble had their Criterion sale last month and I thought it was a beautiful movie. I haven't seen Badlands nor Days of Heaven but if Criterion does release Badlands, I'll definitely buy those two films next.

Johnny Depp nailed his mannerisms.

The Fountain would be an excellent choice to add to the CC; I was trying to think of newer movies that would possibly be easier to get into the collection :)

Lutz
12-10-2011, 07:04 PM
The Fountain already has a bluray release you can buy for below $10! Why would Criterion release it and why would you buy it?

I believe Criterion's goal is to release films in a quality edition that would otherwise not receive one or may not get a release at all.

You can tell my bias on this issue from my Criterion list on the old forum - the large portion of Criterion films I own are from other labels who also did an excellent release (eg. The four Fassbinder sets from the UK where you get twenty-five movies for the price of the Criterion BRD trilogy and Fear Eats the Soul. There is no difference in the quality as both sources come from the Fassbinder Foundation.).

thevoid99
12-10-2011, 11:13 PM
I heard that Darren Aronofsky wants to release The Fountain on Criterion not just for the commentary he made but also reveal more about its production. I think it deserves a Criterion release though my opinion on the film is quite mixed.

richardp
12-11-2011, 12:37 AM
The Fountain already has a bluray release you can buy for below $10! Why would Criterion release it and why would you buy it?

Because it's one of my favorite films, and the current bare bones blu-ray release sucks. I believe it could definitely be given a better transfer. Also, as TheVoid said, Aronofsky is sitting on a ton of special features that Sony just wasn't interested in because it flopped at the box office. It's a remarkably beautiful piece of art, in my opinion.

My (http://www.criterion.com/my_criterion/54414-iran_ed) list isn't anywhere near as vast as most of the others on this page. I didn't buy my first (Au revoir les enfants (http://www.criterion.com/films/549-au-revoir-les-enfants)) until May of this year, and was unable to get anything during the Barnes and Nobel November sale.

Supplements. Look at Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas... the cheap Universal transfer isn't THAT bad; the CC transfer certainly isn't leaps and bounds better (unless the color correction on the Universal disc really bothers you).

People still want the Criterion edition because it's Criterion and because of the supplements.

I always like to keep my picture speculation to myself, at least for awhile :)

I'm thinking the samurai are from "Three Outlaw Samurai", though.

I can't wait for La Jetee/Sans Soleil in Feb, my copy of La Jetee has seen better times

Edit: Also, I believe these are meant more as a "what they're working on" than what's coming out... I seem to remember a "Life Aquatic..." picture and a "Wild Strawberries" picture in last year's

They had a picture on Y Tu Mama Tambien for last year but didn't come out in 2011. They better get it right for this year. I heard Weekend by Jean-Luc Godard is going to come out along with a rumor for David Fincher's The Game. I really hope they release Breaking the Waves on Criterion as well.

The Iceberg is clearly A Night To Remember, and all the cars are Traffic. I'm hoping that the marionette is Being John Malkovich, and I think it'd be pretty neat to see the Coney Island sign being the original theatrical release of The Warriors.

Good guesses so far for the New Year's doodle. The only thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is the sign with the mouth eating the leg---it's definitely EATING RAOUL. I'm pretty excited for A Night to Remember and Being John Malkovich (if that is indeed what the marionette represents).

I've been pathetically holding out for a Criterion release of The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover ever since rumors started circulating a couple of years ago. That film was MADE for the CC treatment.

The Criterion Collection By The Numbers (http://thedroidyourelookingfor.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/criterionbythenumbers2.jpg)

People are freaking out over the fact that the "pop-up" Gojira (http://www.tumblr.com/photo/1280/15624955918/1/tumblr_lxlgcoNhUz1qebry0) in CC's Godzilla blu-ray resembles the 2002 "Millennium" version more than the original 1954 version. I personally could care less about that... that packaging needs some work :(

V Oh well, this is by no means as big of a deal as the aspect ratio "decision" for 'The Last Emperor'. I've personally been waiting for a Criterion Collection release of Godzilla since the laserdisc days (when they were supposed to do a box-set). Less than 2 weeks now...

I'm up for that!!! In fact, I thought about having Heaven's Gate as a Criterion release. It's not a very good film though it has its moments including Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography and David Mansfield's direction. I never realized Brief Encounter was on Criterion bluray, but it's only available in the box set "David Lean Directs Noel Coward." I would love to own Brief Encounter but is it worth the $52.99 for the boxset? Does anyone own this or have opinions on the other movies in the set, "In Which We Serve", "This Happy Breed", and "Blithe Spirit"?

If you are region free there is a lone BLU release in the UK.

I'm trying to get the best deal so I can get a bunch of them:

I splurged pretty hard on this one:
First i picked up a bunch of familiar material:
12 Angry Men

Walkabout
Colors trilogy
Seventh seal

And then i went for some leap of faith stuff. Gaps in my education
Belle de Jour
The Last Temptation of the Christ

Monterey Pop

You know, i work literally one block from where Monterey Pop took place, amd ive done lots of stuff for local museums and instituions about. And somehow i havent seen it before. FOR SHAME.

Being John Malcovich $9.99
Down By Law $9.99
Mystery Train $9.99
The 39 Steps $9.99
The Lady Vanishes $17.99
Chungking Express $17.99
Samurai Trilogy $24.96

Was denied use of multiple coupons first time I went when I bought three at once, but after that I found the other 8/40 coupon and got two at a time. I was only shot down completely once when the cashier couldn't enter the coupon in correctly and called the manager. "Whoever let you use the coupon before probably shouldn't have allowed it." The same day after getting denied I went to another Barnes & Noble and used them with no problem. I was going to wait to buy Samurai Trilogy until I got my $10 EBATES giftcard but I was worried it may not come in time, plus I've been getting such good deals I figured I wouldn't be so cheap for once.

I think I'm done with the sale for now as I am getting tired of having to explain the coupon to the cashiers and worrying about being denied. I am missing out on a couple other titles I wanted to get (Fear and Loathing, Tiny Furniture) and I'm going to marathon a few other titles (Cronos, Gomorrah, Kuroneko, Revanche, Wages of Fear, The Great Dictator, Shallow Grave, Carlos), as I hate blind-buying, on streaming services like HULU or NETFLIX INSTANT so maybe I will be back before the 31st, but I feel pretty happy with the purchases I made this time around.

Let's see if I can hold off buying The Royal Tenenbaums, The Game, Umberto D, In the Mood for Love, and Rosemary's Baby before the next sale but it will be tough.

Monterey Pop

Being John Malkovich

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I hate blind-buying

Of the 26 films I own 16 were blind buys. None of them so far have been disappointments. I think I automatically see that a film is in the collection and think it must be quality. I got to see The Four Feathers eailer this week, I would have never even really paid attention to it if it wasn't in the collection, (which is a sad reality) but I really enjoyed it. There are a few shit films in there too, (A few Michael Bay films) I saw Equinox three months ago. So bad it's good.

Lutz

You both list Tiny Furniture on your buy list... Have you been watching GIRLS on HBO?

I did a week marathon where I watched all of GIRLS and then Tiny Furniture. It's a good movie by itself but I think it may be much better in perspective of Lena Dunham's overall work to date.

The Devil's Backbone as No. 666... oh, that would be awesome. Definitely one of del Toro's best films. I'm hoping for news on possible releases for Breaking the Waves, Y Tu Mama Tambien, and Requiem for a Dream. Plus, they need to reissue some of the out-of-print Criterions for some of the films from Handmade Studios like The Long Good Friday, Time Bandits, Mona Lisa, Withnail and I, and How to Get Ahead in Advertising.

It's also on YouTube in four parts, if anyone wants to get a feel for it before purchasing the Criterion.
I see that Things to Come is also on YouTube, as is Marketa Lazarova. Three films I'd like to watch, but definitely through Criterion as opposed to YouTube. It's nice to get an idea of what you're in for, as opposed to completely blind buys.

I'm with you on that although the box set is sort of incomplete since it's missing some Kurosawa films like Dreams, Rhapsody in August, Ran, and a few others. They have done this sort of thing before with regard to other films (some Kubrick stuff) that aren't on the CC at all. I took with a grain of salt. I think B&N had a special week-early release for The Devil's Backbone.

I went a little crazy with this sale and got 20 titles but only spent $222.25, averaging about $11 and change per title. I think I am done for now, but there is still about two weeks and I might get the itch to pick up Carlos and Marketa Lazarova, although both are blind buys and I don't like doing that too often. They are both streaming on Netflix and Hulu Plus respectively so maybe I will check them out on there first.

My Haul:
- 8 1/2
- Badlands
- Ballad of Narayama
- The Blob
- Broadcast News
- Crumb
- Curious Case of Benjamin Button
- Days of Heaven
- Devil's Backbone
- Double Life of Veronique
- Ice Storm
- Kid With a Bike
- Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
- Life of Oharu
- Lord of the Flies
- Seventh Seal
- Shoah
- The Thin Red Line
- Tiny Furniture
