Apparently they just had their 10 year anniversary!

It's kinda a slow time for them right now while Albarn's doing other things, but at least now they've got a thread at ETS again.

Yeah, things have slowed down, almost practically haulted since EMI haven't liked how things were going. I saw them last year in October, and got a majority of the bands autographs. Also got Jamie's autograph. It was a fun concert.

I don't know if there is ever going to be a new Gorillaz album. All 4 members of the band have an album out now and I think Albarn is getting into the musical theatre scene. I love their music, but I really wasn't a fan of 'The Fall" :/

I think Damon said something recently in an interview that Gorillaz aren't over, they're just on a hiatus. Plus, a new tune is suppose to be made in February since they're doing that Converse shoe 3 artist, 1 song thing.

loved the "Captain Howdy" cereal, exorcist reference I think? And the crashed Stylo car outside.

I wish they'd used some parts of the full song in the video, i can't say i'm a fan of it as a stand-alone 4 minute track, I think its pretty meh sounding. But the full 13-minute piece is still really, really great. Gorillaz haven't really gone "all out" on anything since Demon Days, maybe excluding the Stylo vid.

It's so interesting that you think this. Do you still? I find it interesting because, though the whole song is amazing, Andre impressed me the most, and all the people I listened to the song with were similarly blown away. I think that his verse may very well end up being the best rap verse 2012 hears. It reminds me of the way Nicki Minaj completely dominated Kanye West's "Monster" last year. Do you listen to much hip-hop?

I at least wish they would just dish out all those Plastic Beach B-sides they're sitting on. Hell, they wouldn't even need to make a fancy package. Upload that shit to the site and sell it digitally.

But then again, he does only say that they're essentially over, and that there won't be any new material. Would B-sides from an album that came out 2 years ago count as "new material?" I know, I'm totally reaching here, but it really bites that we may never get to hear that entire song featured in Russel's Plastic Beach Ident video, and that the last song we heard from them was a one-off song done for Converse (It's an awesome song, don't get me wrong. But that shouldn't be the last project from...well, any band).

Yeah this is awful. Such a downer. There's chatter on the line that it has something to do with a falling out between Damon and Jamie.

I would love a P-Sides album. At one point there was a song called Sloped Tropics, which sounds like I need to hear it NOW.

BlueCalx
04-14-2012, 09:48 AM
Yeah, it's a huge bummer and a lame way to go out. We had 'em for ten years, though, and the output was pretty much excellent across the board, so I can't get too worn down over it. Albarn makes music every day, by law of averages, some of it has to end up being good.

That was actually pretty refreshing. It sounds like things are a lot more laid back between them than what it seemed. I'm glad they're not on bad terms or "falling out" though. Just kind of taking a creative hiatus and (most likely) putting Gorillaz on the shelf.

I WOULD like to hear about those projects that they worked on between Gorillaz albums that Jamie talks about, though. Good or bad, I'd like to see anything these guys can churn out together.

Good News Everyone!

“That’s next year. I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well. I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation. What I try not to do when I’m working in this creative period, the cooking of the mess, is go to other peoples’ exhibitions and look at other peoples’ work. I close my eyes, and don’t want to know what anyone else is doing. Doing that has kind of ruined the creative process for me in the past, and I don’t want to let that happen again.

The real tragedy is that we'll never get to hear the full version of the song in the Russel Ident video from the Plastic Beach era. :( At least I'm blissfully unaware of any other gems that would've been included on that release. ??

It looks like that's just the excerpts from the "Book Of 2D" thing they're doing. About a month ago, they started off with posting a bunch of clips from their videos, songs, live shows, and whatnot. Old pictures and magazine covers and the like. Then they did "The Book of Noodle" which told a little story about Noodle's goings-on after Plastic Beach. Then they did Russell, then Murdoc, and now 2D. The 'music' in the videos you're talking about is just generic background noise, as far as I know. Unless there's a specific Instagram post you're referring to that has actual Gorillaz music in it.

But since they've been revving up the Gorillaz social media machine the past month, I expect a new single to drop very soon. Noodle's official Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/watashiwanoodle/) posted an image last week of the logo of a Beats 1 radio show 'Soulection' which made people assume that the single would drop when the show aired on the 22nd, but that obviously didn't happen. But I believe it airs again tomorrow, so maybe we'll get it then.

I am very ready.

That was ... generally terrible. Just never comes together or goes anywhere. I've seen defense of it as "It's supposed to feel uncomofrtable! I'm hoping the album isn't like this, because Jesus Christ, I'll probably never hear it a second time if that's the case.

The press release for the song seems to imply that this is a non-album single.

As for the track itself...I dunno - it sounds like two completely different songs melded into one. Clementine's vocals and the rest of the music never seem to mesh. A composition similar to "Cloud of Unknowing" would have blended much better with the vocals. Maybe the juxtaposition was intentional, maybe Albarn suddenly became tone-deaf.

Can't wait for the new record! The four new songs are brilliant, especially Andromeda and Ascension, I absolutely love those! Man, it's been a busy few years for Damon with Blur, his solo record and the tours, it's so cool that's he's back in Gorillaz mode again!

Listen close. I think it's actually Noel on the chorus so that picutre of Murdoc is a nice hint. Although I had to think of Liam at first as well, but they both wore those glasses.

How weird to see huge britpop rivals in members of Blur and Oasis doing a song together. :p

After to listening to everything again, I'm going to say my favorite song is Hallejuah Money. That song just has a drawing power of concentration to me...probably due to Clementine's vocal delivery.

I'm dying to hear the entire track for "Submission." All the tracks are everything I expected from them, and knowing that we have over two albums of material coming makes this year that much better. The video for "Saturn Barz" blew me away though; what an interesting take on a video you can interact with. Smile on my face the entire time, and yes, that is Noel in the chorus.

Is it sad that I'm debating Kansas City AND Red Rocks...? I mean, I gotta make up for not being able to see them on the Plastic Beach tour...My only legitimate concern at this point is the anticipation that NIN dates are gonna be dropped the SECOND I can't afford to buy them. :D

UPDATE
Gonna avoid the current leak, whatever it is sourced from or whatever the original ripper did to it, there is a hum throughout and the overall quality/mix is weak. I A/B'ed it with the lossless singles that were already released and the difference is quite noticeable. It seems like it was sourced from a vinyl and a hum was picked up that drowns out a lot of the low end/fullness of tracks.

I'll wait until the official release.

There's another source going around
it's a rip of the listening party that's going on on the app
It's the actual files, not a recording. They're only 128kbps but it's better than the vinyl rip.

Loving the album after my first listen. I heard a decent amount of them before the release and most of them were not full tracks. Strobelite is fucking fantastic, Momentz, Saturn Barz, and She's My Collar are highlights for me. I think the collabs are a bit much on this one and would love to have heard some more Gorillaz on the overall piece. Nonetheless, it works for me. Grabbed tickets to the Philly show as well!

I can't be the only person who thinks a lot of this album is way too upbeat, can I? It just feels very ... inauthentic at times to me. And, for whatever reason, all of the best songs seem to be in the bonus tracks. Why things like Ticker Tape and The Apprentice are Deluxe-only is beyond me.

Oh, and shocker of the year so far: Hallelujah Money's my favorite thing on the standard CD tracklisting. Didn't see that one coming at all, but it's such a refreshing break from the stuff that surrounds it and actually seems to directly grapple with the anxiety being felt throughout the album.

Edit: the more I listen the more I like. I hoped that would happen. I still think a lot of the gold is in the back-end and it's a shame that so much incredible material isn't going to be on every version of the album.

My friends and me have been spinning the first leak heavily in the past day and so far - we've celebrated it. The general consensus seems to be "Ooooookay....", swiftly followed by "oh well, since I'll probably listen to it for the next few years, it'll grow on me". We tend to compare it more to Plastic Beach and Daft Punks RAM then everything else. But yeah, the Rip was shitty - and its download only justifiable by it occurring on four-twenty. Let's face it: That leak was no accident.

Can't wait for the release... I'm getting really giddy. This will be the first Gorillaz-record I will buy as a vinyl instead of a CD. And I digg the implications of the more dancehall-oriented songs being my OST for summer 2017... YAH YAH YAH :D

There's an actual CD rip in MP3 and FLAC of the deluxe edition out there now, MUCH better quality.

But sadly, after a couple of listens, I am still not really feeling this album to be honest. It just doesn't feel like a Gorillaz album to me. When it comes to Gorillaz albums, it's at the bottom of my list at the moment. It's Humanz versus The Fall for last place. The debut self titled still holds the top spot for me.

After repeated listens... I love this album. It feels Gorillaz, but I really wish there were a bit more of their presence on this album. I listened to Plastic Beach today and I forgot how much I fucking love that album (More than Demon Days... yes, I said it). Songs like Rhinestone Eyes, Superfast Jellyfish, Empire Ants... there is so much atmosphere to that album as a whole, it really makes me it back and actually think that the animated band is on a beach somewhere performing these songs.

Again on the new album, I feel that the first half of the album is more appealing to me. Ascension through to Busted and Blue are all top notch for me and my listening ears. I cannot help but feel someone messed up on the tracklist; it just seems so out of order to me for some reason. But how the hell didn't "Ticker Tape" make the official listing?? And only if 2-D was in "Out of Body" a bit more.

What's weird is even that track has a guest, which is Kelela. Wonder why she's not listed as a guest on that track? Is her voice on that track suppose to be Noodle? That'd be weird cause Roses Gabor, who sings Dare and is thought to be Noodle's singing voice, sings backing on Andromedia.

also, I'm thinking I'm liking the live versions of these tracks better. The ones on the album just feel sterile. This performance on the other hand is top notch.

I agree, the live versions are much better. I think because it sounds like a band performing the tracks. Gorillaz' albums always feel like a group where as this album kinda loses that feel. Feels more like a producer with guests. Having an actual band playing these new songs gives the songs the band feel they need to have that Gorillaz charm.

Humanz is a bit of a mixed bag for me, at the moment. There are some truly awesome tracks on there, like Busted and Blue, Strobelite, Momentz, Hallelujah Money, Submission, and the singles, but the rest are kinda clunkers. Sex Murder Party is really fucking boring, Damon's chorus gives it a bit of intrigue, but that's pretty much it. Charger missed an opportunity to be a raucous, electronic-tinged callback to some of the more punkier songs on the self-titled record, with the awkward, insistent kick drum beat and the kooky, sampled guitar loop not evolving into something with more energy or excitement. However, Damon's vocals have that 2D, zany vibe which is cool. But, I feel like Grace Jones was underutilized. She should've been featured in a full verse or something, instead of popping up through delay-drenched samples.

Out of the 6 deluxe bonus songs, I think Out of Body and Ticker Tape should've been slotted into the main album. Out of Body in particular, is so eccentric in such a great way. Kilo Kish's vocal perfomance is really unique, and suits the vibrancy of Gorillaz
perfectly. I'm hoping that the record will grow on me over time, it's not awful... just underwhelming in spots.

An artist censoring themselves, one of the most disappointing things I read surrounding this album. I believe Damon should have had the balls to not cut Trump references out of the record, especially when he specifically wrote and released the very first single as a dis against him. He went and edited out any mention of him. No wonder this record feels disjointed.

Damon claims he edited the Trump references out because he didn't want to give him any more publicity and he didn't want the tracks to feel dated. But his points don't really make sense considering in almost every interview he's done, he's mentioned Trump, giving him more publicity (plus the lines are sung unedited live)... And projecting your own individuals on the tracks doesn't really work when it's so obvious who it's about.

So all of the previous Gorillaz albums have been released in 24 bit. I recently got the D-Sides 24 bit version. Below you will see the 24/44 web release versus a 16/44 rip of the Japanese CD. A difference?

It blows my mind that songs like 'The Apprentice' and 'Halfway to the Halfway house' were cut from the original album in favor of songs like 'Carnival' or 'Momentz'.

My favorite of theirs is still 'Plastic Beach', I think.

I read somewhere that there's only two features on it, one of which is Snoop Dogg, so I'm a lot more hopeful for this than I expected to be. Humanz felt like they waited too long and had a lot of dust to shake off and sort of threw everything at the wall to see what stuck, which led to an overlong front-loaded album that didn't hit as hard as it could have. I'm hoping the fact that this is coming out roughly only a year later means it won't be as bloated or overcooked.

Agreed. Even the way the track listing worked, it was very uneven and hard to get through at times. What I did was scratch the songs I felt that were out of place and or bloated and made a much smaller playlist of the album which I enjoy much more. Unfortunately, it is easily forgettable. It's insane to me that they would underproduce so many when Gorillaz are still pretty hot for the time being - between the HUGE amount of press and touring and releases they've had the last couple of years. Maybe they'll start taking orders again to meet demand, but who knows. If nothing else, that Humanz box set is still looming just over the horizon. Taunting me. Tempting me...

Edit: Aaand it's gone, just kidding, heh.

I also just realized that in the past year I've gone from owning 0 copies of Demon Days on vinyl to 4. Hmmm.

I just need to buy the debut album then I have all their work on vinyl (aka I already have Humanz). I just wanted something extravagant and The Now Now looked great to do that in a purchase.

They're becoming increasingly easy to find, honestly! They should be fairly readily available wherever you normally get your vinyl. ;) One of them is bootleg, but bought it anyway for the sake of finding it heh.

I wanted to pre-order the $84.99 bundle. Their loss. I guess I get the dumbed down stripped version with nothing and buy it from a third party retailer rather than their actual store. The shit was just posted Thursday and EVERY deluxe bundle at every price has been sold out. Insane.

So I kind of didn't want to, but I ended up buying Gorillaz tickets for my girlfriend's b-day. She's a huge fan, so I know she really really wanted to go. It was big back and forth thing because we're trying to save up for vacation and I just bought the NIN tix. But we figured we'll make it work, it's fine. Anyway, I must say the ticket prices for these shows are fucking stupid. I paid 226 for seats in the 200 section. It would've been 300 to be in the 100 section. And she was willing to go for the nosebleeds, but for 126 I thought it was stupid. Really Gorillaz? When we saw them last year it was way cheaper. This show better be good because I don't want to pay those prices in the future. I mean they put on a good show, but it wasn't mind blowing for me.

Mr. Blaileen
06-12-2018, 04:30 PM
Yikes, prices like that pretty much scare me away. $99 for NIN tickets is close to if not the highest I'd be willing to go just to see one act. I love the Gorillaz, but not sure I love them enough for that.

That said, I'm loving the vibe of these new songs, and I think this album will be much better than 'Humanz'. To me, 'Humanz' almost felt like a compilation album that happened to feature the Gorillaz once in awhile. Loving the stripped down nature of these new tracks. It's gonna be a good few weeks for music.

kaydraven
06-13-2018, 09:42 AM
Yeah, I don't love Gorillaz that much, but I know my girlfriend really wanted to go and I was so ready to say well, let's wait and see what StubHub has the day of. Last minute I was like "fuck it" and just did it. If they come back again, chances are we won't go if tickets are this high in the future.

Also, wtf happened to Demon Dayz Chicago? Damon Albarn said that's where he wanted to take the festival next. Now, it's LA? I just want to know if he still plans to do Chicago.

I don't like Humility.

Sorcererz and Hollywood are fucking great.

Tranz is so fucking amazing that it's up there to me with the Demon Days era; different style, obviously, but great nonetheless.

The rest of the record just went by for me, nothing too annoying or amazing. Then again, I'll need to re-listen the last 6 songs, because I'm so hooked on these 3, that I did not even bother listening to the others too much.

Definitely enjoying this album way more than Humanz, which I just could not get into after many tries. The Now Now reminds me of The Fall but with stronger tracks. This is what Humanz was missing. If he mixed The Now Now and Humanz up, it would have been a stronger record. Their self titled debut will always hold a special place in my heart and probably will never be topped. I am just happy Damon delivered something that is at least better than Humanz and The Fall.

1 Gorillaz
2 Demon Days
3 Plastic Beach
4 The Now Now
5 The Fall
6 Humanz

implanted_microchip
06-27-2018, 11:47 AM
Humanz was just a really bloated album. The best of it was amazing but getting to the best of it felt like such a slog and having so much material plus all the interlude tracks made it get bogged down too often, and then most of the best songs were bonus tracks tacked on at the end. If you cut it down and resequenced it you’d have a fantastic album but there’s too much there, it’s exhausting. I’m hyped to hear this new one and think the brevity of the tracklist is going to be a good thing for it.

Piko
06-27-2018, 12:00 PM
Humanz has it's moments but it's definitely bloated for sure. The lack of Damon on vocals was noticeable. Can't stand that Vince Staples track at all. The bonus tracks are disposable. This album is almost the complete opposite of what got me into Gorillaz.

kaydraven
06-27-2018, 12:00 PM
I completely forgot about the bonus songs that were on other editions of the album. Yeah, you're so right. There was just too much. And it sucks because so many of those bonus tracks were way better than what was on the actual album.

I read that a lot of this album was written on the road, which is why the album sounds like 'The Fall II' to me. That's not a knock - I love that album. Very stripped down and very catchy stuff. Plenty of soul on it too. 'Humility' has grown on me a lot, and 'Sorcererz' 'Lake Zurich', 'Fire Flies', and 'Souk Eye' are all fantastic. Growing on me with every listen.

Back on a big Damon/Gorillaz kick! So let's talk...

What's everyone's thoughts on the new The Good, The Bad and The Queen album Merrie Land? It's pretty morose like the last album, but I'm really digging it! It's always impressive to me how prolific Damon is.

Does anyone listen to the Hallelujah Monkeyz podcast? They recently had Cass Browne (Gorillaz lore writer) on to discuss his involvement in Phases 1-3, as well as shedding new light on how Phase 3 fell apart and scrapped plans, I recommend fans listen to it, despite 1 of the hosts having a slightly annoying voice.

Also, what are people's thoughts on the non-album Humanz tracks from the Super Deluxe version? After giving them a listen, while they are interesting, none of them feel like must-haves or things that should have made the proper album. Also, Sleeping Powder is probably my favorite track to come out of "Phase 4." Anyone else feel this way?

Among the 3 latest Damon projects, how would you rank them? (Humanz, The Now Now, Merrie Land)
Here's mine, though I enjoy them all:
1. Humanz
2. Merrie Land
3. The Now Now

Anyone else manage to get tickets to their North American tour?? Had a chance to grab a floor ticket to the Denver show and couldn’t help myself. Well worth the $200 after fees. Cant fucking wait. Getting to be up near the stage is gonna be bonkers - the two times I saw them in 2017 were from nosebleed seats.

I REALLY wanted to see the two Florida shows, where fucking Jungle will be opening for them, but the timing won’t allow for it. That, and I’m already seeing Jungle in Arizona a couple of days before NIN’s Red Rocks shows, so that’ll be good enough for me.

And if you’re not a Jungle fan already, I hiiighly recommend them. They’ve become a new favorite of mine in the last year.

I saw them on Tuesday in Sydney, and it was absolutely fantastic! The live band is so good at bringing the tracks to life in an energetic way, and seeing Damon move around the stage and jump into the crowd was awesome. Everybody in the arena was so psyched to see them, and you could tell the band were just feeling everybody's excitement. I've only seen Damon with Blur in 2015, so to see Gorillaz for the first time was great! The set was packed too, 27 songs with pretty much each album being represented. M1 A1 as a gig opener is brilliant! Plus, the version of Clint Eastwood with Sweetie Irie appearing up on stage made everybody lose their minds.

Feeling jealous for everyone that's gonna be at the upcoming shows, including you guys here going to the ones in the US! I would definitely love to see them again in the future.

And now there's three new songs...?

You know what it is? I think NIN spoiled me with the whole YZ ARG. Gorillaz was always great about creating a world and a story but this time (and for the past few albums really) things just feel 2% of their usual presentation. When the album dropped, they sent a link to "The Cracker Island Room". It was basically just ten different links to their store.

It's not bad, just kind of lackluster.
