Is there anywhere that you can download "rare" Nine Inch Nails songs legally? By rare, I mean songs like the theme for Tetsuo: The Bullet Man, "Ghosts 37," "Ghosts 38," and the like.

legally?

Nope. 'Fraid not.

• There are some "rare" tracks available on remix.nin.com [FREE]
• Ghosts is under a Creative Commons license so any way you download it is legal (more than likely, there are exceptions) [FREE]
• If you're looking for a specific track in a specific format just ask on the board and wait!

Is there a way to make Trent actually record "Now I'm Nothing" and then release it so I can listen to it?

I have all of those, but I am not sure if me giving them to you would be considered "legal".

I'm still waiting for the songs "The Life you didn't lead" and "Message to no one" to pop up in some way, shape or form!

because Burn and Deep are listed

To edit things in, go to their page and add [[Category:Rare NIN Songs]] at the bottom.

Dead Souls is a tricky one. It's on the standard release of TDS-J, but on no other standard release (that's how, imo, a "rare" track should be judged, if it's on a standard release). I think throw this either to its discussion page or the ninwiki thread on ETS to decide?

Andrew

Dead Souls is on the second disc of TDS-DE, and it's also on the Crow soundtrack. It still might qualify for the 'rare songs' list though.

seasonsinthesky
12-04-2011, 10:38 AM
indeed, nothing on TDS:DE could be considered rare anymore, as they're easily accessible in one place. same goes for "Get Down, Make Love" since it's on the PHM remaster. the whole idea of the list is (or should be) that they're not easily found on regular, in-print NIN official releases; for instance, "The Perfect Drug" is widely available and in print, but on the Lost Highway soundtrack, not a regular NIN release (since its inclusion on Halo 11 is exclusively overseas, and the WITT singles are long out of print), so it's a rare song.

I think we surmised long ago that Ghosts 37 and 38 were likely licensed under the same terms as the rest of Ghosts I-IV. Feel free to post links to either of those.

I did a full mixdown of all the multitracks for Ghosts I-IV and made a seperate album at one point so this is from that...

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/6475/ghostsiivmultitrackedit.jpg

[iTunes / iDevice ready]
Nine Inch Nails • Ghosts I-IV (Multitrack Edition)
44.1 MB • 7 mins, 2 secs • m4a ALAC [Lossless] • 873 avg. bitrate

37. 37 Ghosts {2:17}
38. 38 Ghosts {4:45}
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
• This project took A LOT of time when I did it
• All mixdowns were done with Adobe Audition
• Silence at the beginning and end of tracks was cut so that's why times are shorter than what is posted around on internet
• Sector boundary errors were fixed, blah blah blah.... I included all of the txt files for what I did if you're interested
• Nothing extra was done to these tracks mixing or production wise except a straight mixdown
• 37 Ghosts ends nicely right into 38 Ghosts, check it out
• These are completely tagged with Tempo, Sort, Performance Credits, Album Art and Publishing Information (like on purchased iTunes files)

It would be rad if we could use the first post in this thread to compile ALL of the rare and off-market tracks that trent has produced.

I occasionally stop by a Deftones message board, and they have threads just for all the stuff you'd have a hard time getting even by Torrent. If we're really the definintive NIN board, we should start putting it together!

And of course, what constitutes a rare track can be hard to say. Is his track with Josh Wink rare, as it's not well-known? Do his remixes, which are normally b sides and thus not commercially available long after release, count?

"Rare" is a horrible term here, in my opinion. If you're going to do a list make it something like "B-Sides and Non-Album" tracks. Then seperate lists for Collaborations, Remixes, Production Work, Unreleased, etc.

just my 2 cents

Im not suggesting that we link all of them. Again maybe some noncommercial tracks. But just to get alist going? And then people can obtain them by their own methods.

Rare would likely mean: music not found on Halo'd discs, wierd collaborations... tetsuo i guess would count... zoo station, 38/37, i think yhose are good recent examples. The wink thing can be found rather easily but could make the list... right? Stuff like purest feeling... not so much for the vets, but for the noobs. People who wouldnt find it inially obvious... do it for the noobs.

Anything not on an album I think, rather than not on a halo: TPD or even Metal are on halos, but not on any main album, so might not be known to people who only buy albums - a fairly reasonable thing to do!

That would remove 37/38 since they are on a halo, but as multitracks.

I guess to even start a list you need a couple defaults for reference. How about the US being country of origin to decide if it's an album track or not, as well as CD being the default media? This is just Nine Inch Nails, no remixes or the like, no Appendage or those remixes on Things Falling Apart that lots of people seem to think aren't remixes, no alternate versions, no unreleased, etc.

Get Down Make Love
A Violet Fluid
Memorabilia
Dead Souls
Burn
The Perfect Drug
Deep
Metal
10 Miles High
The New Flesh
And All That Could Have Been
The Persistence Of Loss
Leaving Hope
Gone, Still
Adrift And At Peace
Home
Not So Pretty Now
Non-Entity
37 Ghosts
38 Ghosts
Theme For Tetsuo: The Bullet Man
Zoo Station

• At The Heart Of It All is not by Nine Inch Nails so it's not on this list
• Ripe is an edit of Ripe (With Decay)

You guys have a funny definition of rare. Just about all of these have been officially released and are pretty easy to come by. When I think of 'rare' I think of stuff like the VIP Happiness in Slavery 12", the only place where those to remixes of Happiness in Slavery exist, or that version of Every Day Is Exactly The Same that only appears on one European (German?) promo. Last (Butch Vig remix) was only available as an 11kh 8bit mono track until remix.nin.com coughed it up. The Telefon Tel Aviv remix of Even Deeper was a rare track, and then that got an official release. Stella Soleil's vocal mix of A Warm Place - rare, in that she only gave it out to a few people online, although I think she ended up posting it somewhere eventually.

The Perfect Drug, rare? It has its own halo, guys. Likewise And All That Could Have Been.

the perfect drug (edit)

starsuckers inc and star****ers inc

exactly, so I give up :)

My list wasn't "rare", it was something along the lines of "B-Sides and Non-Album Tracks", from a US standpoint. The albums being:

Pretty Hate Machine (LP)
Broken (EP)
The Downward Spiral (LP)
The Fragile (LP)
With Teeth (LP)
Year Zero (LP)
Ghosts I-IV (LP)
The Slip (LP)

Nine Inch Nails • Discipline (Multitrack Version)
35.8 MB • 5 mins, 2 secs • m4a ALAC [Lossless]

01. Discipline (Multitrack Version) {5:02}
-------------------------------------------------------------
• Straight mixdown, no extra production or mixing
• Trimmed silence from beginning and end of track (allowing some extra "silence" for echo at end)
• Ends perfectly into Echoplex; for shits and giggles queue up Non-Entity after this...
• Padded sector boundary error.... included 5 txt files of what I did for those interested
• Complete tags including Album Art, Tempo, Sort, Unsynced Lyrics, Publishing Information, Performance Credits*

* There are no individual track credits, just full album so I went with that info. Also, Alessandro Cortini stated he didn't play on The Slip but he was in the credits so he's in these credits

Rare is fun, but here's one ofthe sad things about the internet...nothing is rare anymore.
Most things are now released digitally, so its easy to find everything, just look on youtube.

Old timers will remember the dawn of the internet, when finding ANYTHING was a mission, exciting and really rewarding.

Last thing I found rare was the Stella soleil mix of a warm place, before it was on YouTube. Ended up dling it from an obscure site. That was fun!

Now, its on YouTube, its boring.

Trent should make a bunch of tracks, and van them from YouTube, amazon and such, and only release them in obscure sites, just Luke the yearzero arg!

Tracking them down would be great fun, and bring out the spirit of the old internet again when it was interesting!

All that would do is create a group of elitist asshole fans that hoard all the music they have the technical knowledge to acquire and refuse to share, on the grounds that "it's boring if everyone has it, maaaaaaaaaaan." That would be a damn good way to drive away tons of fans, as well.

The only official release of the complete version of The Perfect Drug is on the WITT single. Am I correct? Even the 6 track EU version of Halo 11 has the song end abruptly, and I checked the 2 track promo H11 as well.

No, he means the one with the extended ending. The one that leaked in the RealAudio file was a direct rip from the Lost Highway soundtrack. AFAIK, the extended ending only appears on the WITT single (and ITV, according to ninwiki (http://www.ninwiki.com/The_Perfect_Drug_(song)#Versions))

agree with NINfan04, maybe just once is catchy as hell! nealy as catchy is the version of Kinda I want to from purest feeling, its like im on a cruse ship doin the conga line

EDIT: My favorite "rare" tracks are all live ones, Animal/Tough from the Nights of Nothing and Nightclubbing/Sanity Assassin/Dreams/Warm Leatherette from the 06 Radio collabs w/ Peter Murphy.

Speaking of Nights of Nothing, has soundboard of the NIN set ever surfaced from the 2nd show? I have Manson's partial set from the sounboard (where ginger fish gets knocked out after the 1st chours of 1996,) so one must assume that the NIN portion of the set has to be out there too

I've got an mp3 of Supernaut in better quality than most of the ones I've found on various file-sharing sites.

It came from one of those shady international mp3 stores that used to charge pennies/song, and was supposedly ripped from a cassette single of Suck that I'd never heard of existing before.

Or get the FLAC by ripping one of the many legal releases of it?

Survivalism vinyl had "Survivalism_OpalHeartClinic_Niggy_Tardust!(Escaped ..." (seriously, that's the track name).
YZR vinyl had "Capital G switch remix", "The Good Soldier: Sam Fog Mix", "Vessel [Mix 2]" and "Capital G (Ladytron—Finite Climax Mix)".

I'm surprised Trent hasn't put these onto remix.nin.com yet tbh

A fan name for the music heard in this

It's not really a 'fan name' - the name of the video clip as described in the Laserdisc box set I ripped it from was "Top of the Hour" - you can read the full set of related liner notes in the YouTube video description. That shit was so rare I didn't know it existed until a few years ago, and I ended up dropping something like $150 on the boxed set just so I could rip the <30 second commercial and share it (I even had to buy a laserdisc player off Craigslist)

One of these days I'm going to find someone with a Laserdisc player that has digital output, and rip the audio digitally. At that point, I'll be sure to post about it on the Hotline and ETS.

Wait, Top of the Hour isn't considered NIN?

Yeah, its NIN, my bad. Sorry, ive got everything Trent's done (as far as scores, NIN, some remixes, ect,) on my computer titled as "Nine Inch Nails". Just makes sense to me to shuffle it that way. I dont hear much of a difference between songs like Top of the Hour and like say, Driver Down, In Motion, Just Like You Imagined, or Ghosts 8. (as far as the composer goes)

Maybe this thread should be called "Rare Tracks that TR has worked on"!

Which CD? Those ones aren't on the Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D CD. Mind you the best mixes are. I prefer YZR over YZ but the vinyl cuts don't do it for me.

Just to clarify, my intent with this list is to catalog songs that are not now and never were available on CD - and not just retail CD but also promos. For example, the interpol mixes (vocal, edit, full) of EDIETS don't make the list because they do exist on a promo CD - just one that is very difficult to find (http://www.nincatalog.com/item.asp?key=01-02102) (Speaking of which, if anyone has this and would be willing to sell it, let me know. I understand that it will be expensive. And kudos to whomever outbid me at the last second on ebay a couple months ago.)

Well, for the cost of a line out cable (about 50 cents), you can rip any vinyl to computer too (and cassette if you still have a deck(I do)), so being on ANY physical format negates rarity surely? The only rare songs are ones that are not available in any official form (Non Entity and NSPN included as you can no longer officially get them, only through mirrors and torrents) with that logic.

gorast
12-13-2012, 11:54 AM
But for that you need a record player, which are hard to come by for cheap (at least where I'm from). So, if it's exclusive to vinyl and you don't have the necessary hardware to even play the vinyl, then I'd consider it pretty rare.

you can walk into an urban outfitters and get a (surprisingly) decent quality turntable for under $100. most of them have USB outputs so you can rip vinyl directly to your computer.

The above argument that no song is really rare as a result of the internet is true, in a sense. However, there are still plenty of physical items that are rare (not necessarily the items on my list [although some are] - that is a separate issue), and - call me old-fashioned if you like - owning the physical item still means something to me.

I made the list hoping to crowdsource some information useful to me for my own collection (and by extension likely helpful to at least some other collectors). I put it in the Rare Songs thread because I think it's fair to consider songs that were never published in the dominant medium of the majority of the last 3 decades at least kind of rare.

I am interested mainly in collecting CDs, both because they were the dominant medium of the majority of my life and therefore have some nostalgic value, and because (as opposed to vinyl) they will last a very long time with no sound quality degradation with very little care. I am also interested in having a physical copy of every nin song (aside from those never released in physical form, of course), so I have all the vinyl and the fragile cassette in the list above (as well as a turntable and a tape deck, each with USB output), and having a digital copy of every nin song that was only released digitally, in the highest quality possible. I'm sure a lot of people on this forum have similar goals.

So the questions I was hoping to find answers to are:
1. Does anyone know of some obscure promo CD currently unknown to me that has one or more of these songs on it?
2. Does anyone know of other vinyl-only songs that I am not currently aware of?
3. Does anyone know of other cassette-only songs that I am not currently aware of?
4. Does anyone know of other digital-only songs that I am not currently aware of? (again, excluding demos, bootlegs, and unofficial remixes)
5. Does anyone know of better-quality versions of the songs that are (as far as I know) only available from remix.nin.com?

I can appreciate your intent, because I have similar sensibilities regarding CD's and track collecting, etc. I'm sorry that some others haven't been as understanding about your goal.

I looked over my collection of tracks, and I'd suggest adding the following to your list:

remix.nin.com (digital only):
The Downward Spiral (Instrumental)
Year Zero (Instrumental)
Dead Souls (Instrumental)
Deep (Instrumental)
The Perfect Drug (Instrumental)

NINJA Sampler (digital only):
Not So Pretty Now
Non-Entity

ReAct Now (digital only):
Hurt (Live)
Non-Entity (Live)

TVT Sampler Summer 1991 (cassette only):
Suck (Live)

The Bridge School Collection, Vol. 4 (digital only):
The Fragile (Live)
Hurt (Live)

I'm not sure if these would meet your criteria or not, but there are also the 4 2006 radio shows to consider, which were released by Trent via Pirate Bay torrent.

One additional note. Survivalism (Dave Sitek Mix) was also available in digital form as a bonus track for pre-ordering Year Zero on iTunes in the UK. It was 128 Kbps Protected AAC. I'm not sure if it was ever reissued in 256 Kbps non-DRM iTunes Plus.

ok, i know this is an OLD post, but i've never heard of these tracks. What are they? Fragile outtakes...or TDS outtakes? I heard a rumor that there was a TDS outtake with the suicidal lyric "Just do it...no one will care at all..." something along those lines. Just Do It was the one with those lyrics, it's not a rumour but a fact - it was written and at least partially recorded, but Flood said to pull it for being too dark.

The Life You Didn't Lead and Message to No One are both songs that have full lyrics on the With Teeth poster, but were never released in any form. They may not have been recorded, we don't know.
