Lets talk about how great Sephora is.

So I decided to be masochistic and go onto the US MAC site yesterday. Just for shits and giggles, I made a wishlist which ended up being about US$550, went onto the Australian site to compare prices... AU$1200 later. Stupid Straya tax.

Anyways, I need some new products in my life. What can't you people live without?

I gotta get nicer stuff. I had good stuff when I was younger. Never had a zit in my life. Switched to drugstore makeup, and I basically have the shittiest skin ever now. Extremely depressing and annoying.

Shiz, do you really think drugstore makeup has an effect on your skin that badly? I definitely noticed that my skin was worse when I was using cheaper foundation (revlon, etc) but it pretty much stopped when I started using something else.

I use baby oil to remove makeup these days, the effect it has on your skin is amaaaazing. Doesn't dry it out like most make up removers. (Although I've heard amazing stuff about MACs eye makeup remover).

Spent a few days at Sephora? :P Jelly.

Missha M Perfect Cover and MAC Fluidline for me all day, every day. Both stand up pretty well to my oiliness, and finally finding a bb cream that actually matched my fair color was a relief. I used to use MUFE's lightest HD foundation, but my skin just stopped getting along with it a couple of years ago. I still have yet to find an eyeshadow primer that doesn't slide right off my lids within a few hours, so I've pretty much given up on any eye makeup past my liner.

It's a cheapie, but I've found Revlon Photofinish (I think that's the line, will double check) eye primer is really amazing. Benefit also (or used to) make a really great eye primer.

Never heard of Earth Science stuff, I'll suss it out! :) Lancôme shampoo and conditioner holds a very special place in my heart.

I love eyeliner and lip markers so much. I'm decent at drawing, so it's like somebody just let me take my skill there. I wear winged eyeliner OFTEN.

Also, elaborate eye makeup is a thing I do sometimes. For me, short of eyeshadow fading, it's more about technique than what I'm using. Lipstick is something where quality matters more.

In my day to day life (so unless I'm performing) I don't put anything on my eyebrows, don't like the look of them being filled in.

I also don't tend to wear blush or use under eye concealer because paaaaale yassss

Also, with rare exception I don't tend to ever take off my eye makeup. Like.... I wash my face whenever I shower so it wears off, but if I'm wearing it really heavily for multiple days in a row it just turns into smeared rock and roll awesomeness.

I never wash my face at night either and it never seems to make any difference but I only wear a full face a few times a week anyway.

I'm going on a massive shopping spree when I go to NYC in July for all the American brands that are so so much cheaper in the states. Just have to figure out how to leave enough space in my suitcase for it all... my wish list is a mile long.

Whole Foods. They don't test on animals, contain no bad chemicals, and great for sensitive skin (http://earthsciencenaturals.com/product/224/A-D-E-Creamy-Fruit-Oil-Cleanser-8-oz.-.html), all really important to me but hard to find without products being greasy or stinky.

Shiz, do you really think drugstore makeup has an effect on your skin that badly?

Well, you wouldn't think so. But my skin is kinda dumb. The most common chemical that is in basically ALL face cleansers - Salicylic Acid makes my entire face come out in blisters. I don't have any other explanation for why my skin would start being shitty in my mid-twenties. The only other change at that time was I stopped doing drugs. Quitting drugs is supposed to make you skin better so...

Winged eyeliner is a skill to perfect, but once you've mastered that motherfucker, life is so much better. LOVE winged eyeliner. What do you use for it, like a liquid eyeliner? My new obsession is Napoleon Perdis' chinadoll gel eyeliner. SAH AMAZING!

Any sort of good black eyeliner marker. Something that looks like this:

http://www.kissandmakeup.tv/ckone_liquid_eyeliner_marker.jpg

For me the trick is to draw the point of wing first/that part of the swoop and then draw out to it from my inner corner/fill in as appropriate.

Also not really giving a fuck about it being even.

I'm just starting to really dip my toe into this. I wear mascara every day and lip gloss and powder after work (and lipstick when I go to my support group.) I am just incredibly ignorant on all this stuff. I hope to, at some point, figure the rest of it out. ha. Also, I didn't realize how ridiculously expensive it all is! I bought nail polish, powder, foundation and eye shadow and it cost me almost $40.

Better late than never! :) Makeup was something I only started getting into a few years ago, back in my "goth" days I used to wear lots of eyeliner and mascara and thought that was all makeup had to offer.

Basically everything I know about it now, I learnt from Reddit and from experimenting. It is expensive when you start buying designer brand stuff, but there's lots of really great cheaper options, especially in the states. Check out eyeslipsface.com - I lurve a lot of ELF stuff, some of it is pretty standard but the majority of it is great. The brushes especially are so cheap and fantastic!

This link is great for figuring out what different products do - http://www.reddit.com/r/MakeupAddiction/comments/1go4cn/misc_just_getting_into_makeup_not_sure_what_to/

I've been on a lipstick kick here and so I just ordered NYX Macaron Lippies in Blue Velvet, Chambord, Black Sesame and Pistachio. Although they are sold out on the NYX website, you can still order them at Ulta (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod10191002). I just bought NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Transylvania (http://www.nyxcosmetics.com/p-17-soft-matte-lip-cream.aspx). Yeah I feel the same about my damned dark circles under my eyes, which I inherited from my Dad and which get worse depending on my allergies and if I've had any wine. Some days, just a little foundation makes them barely there. Other days, I need either Erase Paste or Laura Mercier Secret Concealer on top of foundation, then I have to hit that with a tiny bit of powder to set it so it isn't drifting and melting but not so much that it gives me wrinkles. I won't leave the house with at LEAST that, though.

My eyebrows are REALLY LIGHT blonde and I'm so fucking tired of dealing with that; if I leave them alone, I look like Manson (when he shaved off his eyebrows). So I was using Lancôme's brow groomer stuff, like blonde mascara for brows, plus a powder filler when necessary. But recently, my colorist COLORED my brows (like, caramel blonde) when doing my highlights. So much easier. It eventually fades, though, and now I need a touch-up. On my BROW COLOR. Weird.

Pigment is so intimidating, tell me your secrets!

for loose pigments, they're not too tricky to work with if you use a slightly damp brush (or use Mac's fix+ for more staying power) then tap it onto the lid and blend with a clean brush. you can also mix them into lipsticks, cream blushes, make em into eyeliner, mascara...they're magical things. i <3 makeup addiction on reddit!

i love doing men's makeup, especially on guys who haven't had it done before. they're always so excited about how good they look and i love seeing the confidence and bounce in their step it gives them. its almost as good as grossing people out with realistic blood and gore :D

you could try the oil cleanse method. its natural, gentle and pretty cheap! I make my own face scrub using brown sugar and coconut oil, it exfoliates, then the sugar rinses off and I wipe off the excess oil with a cloth. My skin is naturally oily but it actually produces way less oil when I wash it this way and keep it moisturised.

http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/1a1cj3/everything_you_wanted_to_know_about_ocm_the_oil/ and http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction are pretty helpful in general

or for something a bit less messy and DIY but still gentle cleansing water is good (something like this http://www.sephora.com/triple-action-cleansing-water-P297132?skuId=1344852)

I don't know what skin type you have though other than sensitive.

I have very very sensitive skin. I cannot use any of these "firming" or "anti-aging" bullshit cleansing or moisturizing products, and I have to be REALLY careful with a lot of botanicals that are "all natural" but contain irritants.

I really recommend the cleanser I linked above, I get it at Whole Foods, Earth Science A-D-E Creamy Fruit Oil Cleanser (http://earthsciencenaturals.com/product/224/A-D-E-Creamy-Fruit-Oil-Cleanser-8-oz.-.html). It has little to no fragrance, it's creamy and leaves no residue, it has caused ZERO problems for my super sensitive skin, and it's fairly cheap ($10.50) and last a really long time. And it removes eye makeup!! I also use their toner, after cleansing, which also works great on sensitive skin.

Is it too late to cancel?? Do you have a Whole Foods near you? That's the best place to go "sample the goods" by EarthScience if you are able. Well, yeah, try it, we're all different, maybe you're not as hypersensitive to stinky as me.

My best pal S had me try this cream by SW Basics (http://store.swbasicsofbk.com/products/cream) because it's all natural and vegan and not tested on animals. The problem is that it's not cream, it's more like BUTTER, you have to rub it into your hand, first, to emulsify it, and then it's like rubbing butter on your face, and then I look like I just put butter on my face. Or, more like CRISCO. For $32.00. For a little jar of Crisco. I only put this on my face in TINY sections if my skin is SUPER dry in the winter. Like, after SKIING.

So then I tried Trader Joe's Coconut Oil, which received rave reviews online, and that was considerably cheaper but that was like putting coconut butter on my face and I felt like a pina colada all day. That went into the trash.

So the moisturizer I KEEP GOING BACK TO because nothing works better for sensitive skin?

LaRoche-Posay (http://www.laroche-posay.us/skintype-sensitive). Best.Moisturizer.EVAR.for sensitive skin. They started selling it at TARGET last year, go figure, but I get it from Amazon because it's cheaper (http://www.amazon.com/La-Roche-Posay-Toleriane-Soothing-Protective/dp/B000IOBEQ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400179273&sr=8-1&keywords=TOLERIANE+PROTECTIVE).

high-end as long as I'm not having to buy giant color palettes that get thrown away just for the blue shades (for example). If I am gonna have to toss a bunch of expired makeup in a few months, I'd rather it be cheap.

I'm in California, USA

edit: i'd like the high-end because I need it to look awesome for like 16 hours, and to make the end product simply look awesome.

Also, is there a good place online to source all that stuff? Should I just go into Sephora with a list?

All my makeup experience doesnt really go beyond buying eyeliner or using stuff that my wife already has. :o

edit: yes, it'll be for some halloween stuff, but also a good excuse to improve my makeup skills

um ... have you asked YOUR WIFE???? Typically, this would be an area in which a wife could be very helpful.

If you just wanna be Manson for a night, you may wanna hit up a costume store which stocks stage makeup. I guarantee you guys like Kiss and Manson ain't hitting up Sephora. They have makeup that needs to endure sweat and stage lights for many hours.

Urban Decay also make really amazing bright eyeshadows and I seriously can't speak highly enough for them.

I want that pallet! NYX has similar colors but they are sold individually. I want yellow eyeshadow. Also, Sugarpill keeps popping up on my IG with outrageous colors. Look them up.

@Digital Chaos. I'm gonna go to both Sephora and Ulta tomorrow. If I see any good blue eyeshadows, I'll you know. I would recommend using a cream or gel based shadow for Manson's look.

She doesn't know much about the flashier stuff; usually sticks to very minimal stuff.
That may soon change now that I got her interested in the more "fun" stuff after showing her the various makeup subreddits a month ago.

I saw this exact palette there last week and it looked incredible! (went with my wife and her newly acquired gift card) The "chaos" color was insane.

I just wasn't sure if it was the right stuff to get. $50 and I'd only use two of the colors. Maybe I can just solve all this by giving all the "leftover" to my wife to try out something new. hrmmm

Cream shadows (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/a/_/Ntt-Cream%20Eye%20Shadow?ciSelector=searchResults) at Ulta.
Gel liners (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/a/Makeup-Eyes-Eye-Liner/_/N-26yh?categoryId=cat80042&ciSelector=leaf) at Ulta. They have a great pigmentation and staying power.

So, I went to Sephora, Ulta and MAC today. I got way more than I had anticipated:

Immaculate Hourglass Foundation (http://www.hourglasscosmetics.com/immaculate-liquid-powder-foundation/). Holy shit! I have oily skin and this did not make my face oily at all. It's worth the money I shelled out. @ Sephora
NYX Matte Lipstick in Audrey.
Eyelashes by Eyelure. I didn't get the Katy Perry ones. I'm a cheap-o.
A makeup case which is already full. @ Ulta
A shadow brush, brush cleaner and Turquatic fragrance. @ MAC

I just realized that I need a foundation brush. :(

@Digital Chaos I saw a lot of good blue shadows at Sephora. I suggest on making a trip down there with the wifey this weekend.

I seriously didn't know such a thing existed.

For your eye makeup to last all night and not crease or smudge, use Urban Decay primer potion. I use the Eden version as it provides a better base/concealer color to put everything on top of. It's a little pricey, but if you're into makeup, it's worth it and lasts quite a while. Also, your wife can use it for everyday makeup. Cream and gel shadows will crease and smear throughout the night. It might add to the icky look that you're going for, but if you want clean looking makeup with good definition, I'd stick with powder eyeshadows on a matte primer base.

As for the colors, I'd highly recommend a good charcoal shadow on your eyelid, MAC Deep Truth (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-6CzdY8YP2k/R_DfcoiA-YI/AAAAAAAAAJM/s2a8dJ7vTY4/s400/concurso%2B%2820%29.jpg) just above that, and blend the outer edge with MAC electric eel (http://www.allure.com/images/beauty-products/makeup/2011/mac-eye-shadow-electric-eel.jpg) or Sugarpill's Afterparty (http://www.sugarpillshop.com/products/afterparty-pressed-eyeshadow) to blend it outward. I have a bunch of makeup and palettes that I use with these colors if you want to borrow them for a day or two (as long as you use clean brushes!). But if you're looking to add items to your collection, I'd get those blues. They will hold up all night and they're very fun to play with.

JessicaSarahS
06-05-2014, 12:59 AM
And I should add that everyone should properly sterilize their makeup and brushes, especially if you use it on others. I do wedding makeup on rare occasions when I feel like putting in that effort, so cleaning is a big thing for me.

Oh yeah. I didn't even begin to cover skin coverage! :P It's best to use glue stick to keep eye brows down. So glue stick, then brush brows to shape and apply translucent powder on top, then more glue stick and wait til dry. Then put on thick concealer and heavy foundation on top of that, then dust with color powder and blend with rest of skin. Eyebrows done! :) Rest of skin should use a primer to keep foundation from smudging.

MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50 (http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/mac-prep-prime-face-protect-spf-50?ID=237952) and Mineralize Skinfinish Natural (http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/shaded/12811/30734/New-Collections/Mineralize/Face/Mineralize-Skinfinish-Natural/index.tmpl) are good staples that I buy often. I haven't been impressed with their newer eyeshadows as the quality and color creativity has gone down a lot. But if you can find their old classic colors, then go for it. And mixing medium in a dropper bottle if you use a lot of glitter or loose powders/pigments. OH! And if you can find it: Mineralize Skinfinish in Petticoat is my favorite blush ever.

Yeah. I have both and the regular prep and prime feels too much like lotion and doesn't really do anything for me. But the Face protect is perfect since I have combination skin. I've even worn it at concerts all night and my makeup looked fresh afterwards, it's amazing! I heard they changed the formula recently, so I really hope it's the same. Do you need a lot of coverage? If not, maybe just go the powder route. I usually get away with lotion and a mineral powder foundation in the summer and it doesn't feel like my face is falling off, haha. I rarely have issues with my eye makeup smearing.

I can't get away with just powder. Even with powder, I get a little sheen on my face. If I had a flawless face, I would do less makeup, especially in the summer. But no. Not being on the patch ruined that.

I've been doing science on my face the last couple of weeks.

When I get home, I take my makeup off with these:

http://www.simpleskincare.com/Resources/Images/cleansing-wipes-650x650_tcm1598-822244.png

I've then been using this at night and in the morning:

Since my retinal surgery, I switched to powder liner instead of liquid and this brush is perfect for it.

That thicker one actually looks a lot better, I might buy it instead. I have this one and I don't really love it.

I say that every time I'm at Aveda. I have nearly enough Pure Privilege points to go on the fucking spa trip.

I thought it sounded pretty weird, but I LOVE it. It works well on my stupid baby skin.

Gah, why are French pharmaceuticals so bloody expensive in this country? Ordered this off amazon to combat winter dryness. We'll see.

Went to my first class at Sephora over the weekend. It was a contouring and highlighting class. I had so much fun and walked away nearly $100 more broke. I got that YSL Touche Éclat highlighting pen!!!!!

I use that, too :) I buy it from Swanson Vitamins, especially when I have a big discount code.

Has anyone tried Hourglass' ambient light blush or Urban Decay's Naked blush?

If any of you are Sephora Beauty Insider members, this year's birthday sampler is a Nars set of Cruella and Rikugien lip pencils.

I don't have their ambient blush but I do have their ambient light powder (I think it's Dimmed Light). I like it for everyday wear. It's nice and subtle and give the right amount of glow.

I saw that. I'm so stoked. July, hurry up.

Ended up picking up the last box of Diffused Heat yesterday, along with samples of Hourglass' primer, Naked foundation and Benefit's Hello Flawless.

I'm so excited for Nyx's new collection! (http://nouveaucheap.blogspot.com/2015/01/swatches-new-nyx-spring-2015-prismatic.html#more)

I just made a spreadsheet of my makeup inventory: $4538. That's not including the orders I just placed at Makeup Geek and Ulta. I know I don't have everything, but damn. That's a lot of money.

Gah, I keep buying Kat Von D products and I want to hate them because I'm not the biggest fan of her, but holy cum, they are so good.

Oh, I can relate to that. You can't just leave Sephora without spending $100 or more ;) I love Kat Von D products as well, but why I can't see thread about shampoos and hair fragrances? For example, after reading articles on Harimadnesssalon (https://hairmadnesssalon.com/) about natural conditioners I'm using a homemade recipe with baking soda and apple vinegar as advised.

I just wanted to say that my top 4 favorite colors for lipstick and nail polish still happen to be red, black, purple and pink. I don't think that'll ever change.
