Not sure if it's well known, but Celldweller is a one man show (a man by the name of Klayton), and Klayton's previous incarnations include Circle of Dust and Argyle Park, which are both much more in the vein of early NIN material. It is rumoured that through Circle of Dust Klayton and Trent became mutual influences on each other. Though they both have since obviously departed from that sound into very different arenas.

CIRCLE OF DUST, the 90s industrial / electronic-rock project created by visionary artist/producer Klayton, marked the beginning of the musical career of the man who later went on to create independent success as Celldweller, as well as forming his own label - FIXT. Along with four full-length Circle of Dust albums in the 90s (Circle of Dust, Brainchild, Metamorphosis, Disengage), Klayton created a side-project under the name Argyle Park, which featured a vast collection of guest collaborators, including Tommy Victor of Prong, J.G. Thirlwell of Foetus and Mark Salomon (Stavesacre/Crucified).

Locked away collecting "dust" for 20+ years, the rights to the Circle of Dust& Argyle Park albums were unavailable to Klayton as the original labels they were signed to shut down in the mid-90s. After 2 decades of pursuing a deal to re-gain ownership of the albums, Klayton was finally able to reclaim the rights in 2015.

As Klayton began planning the remastering and re-release of the original albums, a new idea began to grow. He decided to not only re-release each album, but to fully resurrect the project and create a new full-length CIRCLE OF DUST album, to be released December 2016, nearly 20 years after the last CIRCLE OF DUST release.

Not only are all the re-releases completely remastered, but each includes demos, unreleased bonus tracks, acoustic/alternate versions of tracks as well as some new remixes.

I'd say Wish Upon a Blackstar and End of an Empire are good starting points. Then, listen to the Soundtrack for the Voices in my Head series for his more ambient and instrumental works. His debut self-titled album is way too dated, but still has a few good tunes (some of them were "updated" on The Complete Cellout).

Aaaand new album is pretty disappointing. No ill feelings towards Klayton, as I surprisingly liked most of his debut Scandroid record, and I liked the new Circle Of Dust as well, plus End Of An Empire was between decent and good, so if anyone, then he had all the rights to do something as bland as this.

Too Many Tears and How Little I must know are the only tracks worth putting into a Cell playlist, though you could persuade me about Offworld/Own Little World (reprise), which are basically the same track, so pick one over the another.

It is obvious what he meant to to with this record, but it just falls flat. He made better slow tracks when he wasn't so focused to make such tracks, but it was missing from his discography, so he tried it. Good for him, but I hope in 1-2 years he will return to his strengths under the Celldweller brand.

Heck, Jericho (especially the COD remix) was so fucking dope that I just can't hate this record too much. - those who do not know, Jericho was a bonus on Cell's last record, so don't try to search for it on Offworld.

I need to start off by saying I absolutely adore the art direction for this album! This is probably some of the best artwork since Wish Upon a Blackstar and really lends to the feeling you're going for.

That being said, I feel like the sonic palette you used for this comes off as extremely bland and maybe a bit too plodding. Definitely, the distinction that this is different from the rest of your Celldweller-branded material is immediately apparent from track 1, but what we ended up with is 11 songs that show restraint in a somewhat detrimental way. It feels like a limitation that doesn't aid the music or the soundscape you were aiming for.


It seems more than a few songs end with little to no payoff, a slow fade out on an acoustic guitar line or synth reverb. This isn't always the case, as "Too Many Tears" and "Last Night on Earth" uses these to great effect and gives a satisfying payoff that doesn't need to end in ROCKIN' guitars or loud drums or anything. But unfortunately, it feels like the most interesting lyrics and sounds (especially on "Into the Fall") came from material that you've written or used in the past, which for a Celldweller album is kind of a disappointment. I never thought I'd be kind of bored with "Own Little World", but seeing it here turned into a typical "sadder, epic trailer song" version without a decent payoff just made me think it was added as filler to pad out the album tracklist.


I don't think it's a complete failure, and if anything I think what this album showcased is that your vocal ability and melodies have definitely improved, and this album does a fantastic job of displaying that. "The Great Divide" shows some amazing harmonies that make me jealous every time I've listened to it since it's initial release. Without the usual foray of heavy electronics, synth, and guitar work, your vocals are upfront and center and I absolutely dig that.


All in all, I really wanted to like this, but I don't think I'll be listening to it over and over as with your previous releases, nothing really stuck to me outside of a few standout tracks that I mentioned. I don't think it's ALL bad, I would love to see this sound evolve and work it's way into your work more routinely. Congrats on the album release regardless!

Honestly, the "Klayton featuring Klayton" thing he keeps doing is kind of obnoxious. I understand Circle of Dust was an entity before Celldweller but I feel like these sounds could've been incorporated seemlessly into Celldweller and no one would bat an eye. Scandroid suffers from that same restriction that this album does in that it uses one palette of sounds and ends up feeling very same-y. And I do dig some Scandroid songs here and there! I'm just kind of tired of a barrage of stuff with less thought seemingly put into it. Out of the 11 "new" songs on this album, six have existed in some form previously.

I'd give this one a listen but would recommend newcomers to "Wish Upon a Blackstar" or the debut Celldweller album for a better idea of Klayton's sound.

Haha, yes, Cellldweller feat. Circle of Dust and Scandroid feat. Celldweller are fucking annoying. I know Klayton is a dreamy dude and it makes sense to him in his spaceship, but it is kinda embarassing to be honest. The thing is, even pre-End of an Empire Cell had an extremely broad range from fucking TECHNO (!!!) to straight up metal, so there is absolutely no need for this cute self-collaboration stuff. Klayton can't really make any music that couldn't be labeled as Celldweller. What he should've done with Scandroid for example is to make it into a different line of endevaiour like Soundtracks and Transmissions. It could've been Celldwer - Scandroid Vol 1, and bam, problem solved.

I forgot to mention that the lyrics on Offworld are some next level abyssmal. Yes, those who followed Celldweller for a longer time now know, that his lyrics can sink into shameful territories, but so far I could give him a pass for almost anything. The theme of End of an Empire was pretty cool imo, and WUAB wasn't too opressing with its Blackstar theme, though the difference in music and lyrical quallity is extremely hearable between the songs which were released as part of the first 4 chapters and what came after it. Blackstar and Unshakeable for example has nothing on Tainted or Eon, though I dig those songs as well.
Anyway, don't know which song is it, but he mentions like 3 Scandroid song titles. Datastream, Salvation Code and probably more. Just don't... It is SO forced, ugh. Just stick to the "actions speak louder than worlds do" as the bottom quality of lyrical prowess and I am fine. Also, Klayton proved he can make actual good lyrics, so considering that, it is even more annoying he let himself so loose this time.

Echoes and Mother's Arm are unrateable for me. The former is just nothing, cut the inaudible vocals and put it on Soundtracks, while the latter is just another head-scratching 1-minute Cell song. Yeah, I know the theme of "mother" is important to Klayton and if it helps the immersion of the record, then so be it, but it is not a song. Now exclude Awakening With You remix an Own Little World reprise, and suddenly we are left with 7 songs!!!!! Sure, in case of Celldweller this could still mean it is awesome, just look how diverse End Of An Empire was, but this is almost the same stuff over and over again.

(Random comment: I am listening to Last Night On Earth while writing this reply. Fast forward to 1:36. CAN YOU HEAR IT?!?!?! The vocal melody is a 1 on 1 copy from that Switchback remix. Yeah, not a serious crime, but still annoying.)

I think Klayton needs to chill the fuck down. Waiting for WUAB chapters was a pain in the ass, but I rather wait months for interesting chapters than have this.

Btw I am all for compiling some Cell songs for people who would be interested in his music, but don't want to sit through his entire discography. Though WUAB is pretty great and diverse, but it's a crime to miss Switchback or The Last Firstborn imo.

And Mother's Arms is a song he made back in the WUAB era, back when he was posting on Blogspot (!!!) for his updates. All he did here was re-record it, outside of higher quality and I think being transitioned a step-up, it's the exact same song.

Let's consider this: Wish Upon a Blackstar was in development as early as 2006, possibly entered serious, dedicated production in 2008 based on the demos for Louder than Words and So Long Sentiment. Even if we take the latest date he started working on the album, we still got a solid 3 or 4 years of production before it was released in full. And I absolutely adored the idea of "chapters", but even then he was still clearly taking his time. Now it just seems like he's pumping out releases left and right, not to mention doing this extremely obnoxious re-releasing of songs and dumping them on different albums (Soundtrack for the Voices in My Head Vol 3, for example, started off as super cool new music before he ended up filling it with End of an Empire's interlude "Faction" tracks).

I'm not saying you can't make a great album in a couple months or even a week, I just think there's a correlation between the time he takes on a project to how good and cohesive it sounds. I think if we got almost monthly, full albums from NIN we'd probably run into this same issue.

And to add a note onto the Celldweller feat. Scandroid feat. Circle of Dust (FreQgen Remix) shenanigans, I find that a couple of his songs where that is the case are some of his best...almost as if using elements of multiple genres and infusing them leads to kickass music. Kind of the whole reason I got into Celldweller in the first place!
