Night two kicked my ass!

Alessandro's opening set was the same as the night before. I really wish his rig were on a stand or something as he's almost impossible to see unless you're on the rail or in the balcony.

After his set, the back stage lights started to flicker to the chirping intro of "Somewhat Damaged." It was very apropos as it felt like you were watching a lit fuse on a stick of dynamite. It was an intense opening stretch and the crowd was loving it! I could have done without "Reptile" for the second night, but I won't complain since there were some great surprises in the setlist.

I was rocking the fuck out during "Vessel" and had to record some of it as the electronics were sounding incredible! So, here's a snippet of the ending: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW8N6pXnrNk

I didn't expect to hear "31 Ghosts IV" again, so that was nice addition. Of course, the big surprise was Mariqueen coming out for a mini HTDA set. I kinda expected it to happen since they only did a small tour in the US, but didn't want to hold my breath. It was a great treat and she rocked the fucking mic on "BBB." Of course, I would have preferred "Parasite" & "How Long?" but I'm certainly not complaining. It was a fucking delight and a very special gift for Tokyo. Here's a link to "Ice Age": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfxy_YOuM1c

All in all, this show had a really great vibe and felt different from the first night. I cannot wait to see what surprises they cook up for Friday's show.

Day 2 was drastically different.
NIN opened the show with "Somewhat Damaged" that set tonight's tone.
HM was completely ignored and Day 1's minimalistic rhythm and hypnotic mood were gone. Ilan spent most of his onstage time behind the kit and hit drums very hard. Heavier, more organic and brutal, this was the "more aggressive" show that TR had promised. Even "Burn" was picked from their vault that pleased me.

But NIN always throw in a curve ball and this night's biggest surprise was the encore. After TR said they would do what they've never done, Mariqueen walked in and sang 2 How To Destroy Angels songs. Nice treat!

Lighting was gorgeous. Despite the size of the venue, they seemed to bring as many lights as possible. Strobe got nearly unbearable at the end of HLAH and I had to close my eyes.

Though "The Beginning Of The End" was listed on the setlist paper after mini HTDA set, it was omitted. I guess it was due to the venue's strict curfew. Like the night before, the show ended at 9:00 PM and we were told by local promoter's stuff to get out of the venue ASAP. One of them even threatened us that they would charge us of fee for staying overtime. Shame.

If last year NIN had released not HM but a greatest hits, this was nearly a dream setlist that covered the whole carreer plus HTDA.
But we know HM is a great comeback album and on day 1 new songs sounded fresh and vital.
Do they think new stuff performed by 4-piece NIN didn't turn out good enough or day 1's crowd's response was not warm?

Anyway, such an analyzation is a post-gig thing. During the show I didn't think but felt the great vibe from both the band and the audience. No doubt setlist was a crowd-pleaser.

The verdict will be told when tomorrow's the third and last Tokyo show finishes. If NIN finds the perfect balance of the old and the new, day 3 will be the best!
