Trust me as someone is quite familiar with the comic, if Guardians sucks, it's not going to be because of Rocket.

He will actually be hard to screw up, and he's likely going to steal the show. Probably the last thing you need to be worried about.

How/if they portray Gamora's relationship as Thanos' daughter, on the other hand, is concerning. Dave Bautista's acting ability, the apparent casting choice of Vin Diesel for Groot (a CGI character who barely ever speaks anything but his own name. I bring this up not because I don't think Vin could voice this character, but rather the fact they would pay him to do so when the role is essentially a complete waste for him, unless of course they alter it drastically) etc, these are some apparent red flags I have. Rocket is the last thing from my mind, except of course waiting on who they announce will be voicing him.

The first real, official trailer for Guardians of The Galaxy doesn’t hit until tomorrow on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Thankfully Marvel was kind enough to tease what they had in store with these images released through USA Today and I was instantly excited for the movie.

Do want. I think this will be out there to where it will work. I've always loved these kind of stories in general and I think this will become my favorite movie of all the phases besides the one with Thanos. Whichever that one may be. I've been excited about this movie since the second I read about the characters and to see them on the big screen will be awesome. In short this makes me feel like a kid again. :)

I don't know how I feel about that trailer. I have no doubt that I'm going to enjoy the film and that it'll be great, but I think that trailer did a very, very bad job of convincing the wider public that this will be something worth watching. I hope more trailers come out soon that don't emphasize comedy so heavily.

Definitely a light hearted trailer. But I think it's mostly the acting. It's hard for me not to laugh seeing Chris Pratt and John C Reilly on screen.
Action looks good, CG looks good. Let's hope it has a decent story line that sets up Avengers 2.

Biggest complaint? I wanted to heat Rocket Racoon talk......
But overall feeling good about it.

Of course I'll see it.

Also I'm very into Marvel but haven't read any of these comics. I have a few book suggestions from friends but I was wondering if there are any fans here, should I just go in cold because the movie looks awesome? Like if its going to be a great introduction maybe its better I hold off... you know?

Aside from the humor, you know what else I liked about the trailer? How everything is a bit dirty and lived in- no sterile, brightly lit sets here. Hoping to see more Rocket/Groot action in the next trailer. (Side note: if they pull off Rocket then there's no excuse to not have Beta Ray Bill in the next Thor movie.)

Also, I'm so excited that apparently there will be many Krees in this movie. I hope this is just a peek of what's to come in Phase 3 and beyond.

I was not sold on the Raccoon from the trailer but after reading this, I can see the appeal. And he is kind of cute!

And would it be possible to unlock the thread about GotG? I know it seems early to already have a thread for a movie that only comes out in 6 months but I just looked back that the thread for The Winter Soldier and it was created back in July for a movie that only comes out in April.

This is the first trailer and people are having all these crazy doubts and notions... I think it looks fantastic so far. The Avengers reeked of comedy and it wound up being what it is.. I'll wait a little bit before I say it has the potential to suck just as bad as The Green Lantern. That movie had no hope the minute they casted Ryan Reynolds.

Have had no interest in whatever this movie was until I saw the trailer, actually looks kinda promising.

Agreed, the Racoon guy is the only thing that I really cared about before seeing this trailer, but the whole thing looks pretty amusing all around. Also curious about that Tree guy (Groot), he looks awesome as well.

I'd pay to see this movie based on this trailer.

Haven't bothered reading the thread yet but I noticed around the 2-minute mark in the trailer you can see Benicio Del Toro as The Collector, maybe we'll run into Thor in this movie? That would be awesome.

*edit* glanced through the last page. Rocket is going to be great, don't question him. Also:

the apparent casting choice of Vin Diesel for Groot (a CGI character who barely ever speaks anything but his own name. I bring this up not because I don't think Vin could voice this character, but rather the fact they would pay him to do so when the role is essentially a complete waste for him, unless of course they alter it drastically)

Vin Diesel is most likely doing this just for pleasure more than business, to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's a hard core old-school nerd, super into comic books and video games and an avid Dungeons & Dragons player. I've never met him but he's a friend of a friend, and based on the stories I've heard, he probably just got in touch with someone involved and said he wanted to be in the movie, rather than them going out on a limb to get a big-name actor to voice a minor character, which would be stupid. The way I see it is it's KIND OF like when George Clooney wanted to be in South Park and they made him a dog, except in this case both parties like each-other.

marodi
02-21-2014, 11:51 AM
Vin Diesel did more than only voice Groot, he did mocap too. (http://screenrant.com/vin-diesel-guardians-of-the-galaxy-character-details/)

I love Vin Diesel and him being in the movie would be enough for me to see it. But now there's also that angry, biting raccoon who's very intriguing...

Yeah Vin definitely has a deep, smooth unique voice, reat as the voice of the Iron Giant. I'm sure he's not getting a massive payday. He probably got a very little chunk up front, and a tiny percent of the backend(which is great for him if the movie's a hit). But it's really not that much work either. Most of his work could be done in the studio on his own time(meaning no schedule conflicts with the rest of the cast). Makes it easy for everyone. Win, win, win.

AgentofChaos

All he really has to record is one word. Groot. Which is why I was concerned originally. Didnt make sense to bring in a name for a character that doesn't speak. Thus I didn't want them changing the character to suit the persona or the paycheque, even though I think Vin would do a great job. But if what Ibanez is saying then it makes perfect sense then.

wow, that trailer actually managed to decrease my already limited interest in this movie… oof… that trailer seemed so by the numbers. I've officially hit comic book movie fatigue

I appreciate them trying to replicate the Avengers success down to using nin music in the trailer… though nin music in trailers has a spotty record -- for every 300, there's a Red Riding Hood

Aren't you more interested now just to see how it turns out? I agree that the genre is starting to get fatigued. I wasn't all that thrilled when I saw the last spiderman(And I'm a HUGE spidey fan) but it was just too much of the same. Great movie, just bad timing for me. And it looks like more of the same with spidey 2. I'm sure it'll be great. But I'm just not that interested in seeing spider face the green goblin again.

Maybe this just isn't your time for Guardians. I on the other hand am looking forward to a comic book movie where I'm not familiar with the characters going in. And am curious on how a talking Racoon will play to a group of people in a theatre.

Im actually so excited for this movie b/c its so inherently different than the comic book movies that have been coming out. This is essentially going to be a fun and funnier (more campy) space adventure with a cast of misfits and flawed personalities with darker pasts. They meet in a prison for one thing. Like these aren't superheroes teaming up, they are criminal outlaws, thieves and murderers who have to work together. It sounds hilarious. Also your right its super refreshing to not be familiar with all the lead characters going in.

Im just soooo excited for Marvel to leave Earth. The Dark World was so refreshing in terms of visuals and most the action sequences just because it was a change of setting/tone. Action sequences on Earth cities have to be so clever for me not to get bored to tears now (Im talkin movies generally too lol) , which is why I liked Winter Soldier so much, mm dat hand to hand combat. This movie already undoubtably looks like 10 times the movie Thor 2 was in terms of characters and writing so Im stoked as hell.

But seriously even when I re-watch Avengers I check out once the NY battle begins. *yaaaaaawn.

Ok, so Guardians looks ok. The look is great, the cast is excellent. I haven't read the source material but the trailer is actually slowing down the hype for me, here is why:

It really seems like it wants to be funny, and it just isn't.

Also they keep talking about the guardians as though they are misfits, but among a cast of aliens they have failed to convince me that they are quite misfits or somehow seem inadequate for the job. The whole trailer is like "Look at these goofballs!" and I'm like yeah, that looks like a cast of an action movie, except one of them is a raccoon?

I'm not getting it.

The main thing is that they are criminals, some even murderers. They mentioned that in the first trailer, I guess they downplayed the prison aspect a bit in this one? They are unfit to do hero work, not to do action work.

I thought the movie was great, as far as pacing goes, I did feel like maybe things were being rushed in the beginning but it turned out fine.

There is a lot of comedy in the movie, almost all of it worked and there were some real laugh out loud instances

The villain(s) were pretty badass

Great CGI and action sequences

Drax, Rocket and Groot completely owned this movie.

I really didn't think this could top the masterpiece that was Winter Soldier, but god damn, it did. James Gunn and Nicole Perlman are fucking masters.

The film was the hysterical laugh-fest that I expected, but they really did an incredible job with the emotional, dramatic moments. Quill's intro before the Marvel Studios logo was really painful to watch. That poor kid's had it rough. Now then, let's delve into some spoiler stuff.

Mother fucking Thanos. I was wondering why he didn't look like Josh Brolin, and then I found out that he's all CG. Makes sense, I guess. He was still a total badass.

What really surprised me the most was how hilarious Drax was. I knew the not-so-bright aspect of him would be played up a bit, but I didn't expect all of his lines to be so funny. "Nothing goes over my head," man. Best character.

Nebula was a little unsatisfying, but I suppose they need an established villain for Guardians 2 after all. The way she repaired herself after getting wrecked by Drax, though - great stuff.

The Collector had a lot of interesting shit - a Chitauri soldier, Dark Elf, Cosmo, and of course, that bastard Howard. I couldn't believe it, but at the same time, I totally believed it. Only this movie could do that sort of thing. There are rumors that Adam Warlock's cocoon was busted open and also that there was an Iron Man helmet somewhere in there, but I couldn't confirm either of those.

The references to Quill's dad - that'll be a rough time when it comes around. Dude's a top-tier asshole.

Iron Man, Winter Soldier, and Guardians form this triangle of second-best Marvel Studios films for me. Avengers is still at the top, as would be expected, but I didn't think I would be this blown away by Guardians. Simply stunning.

It gave me all of the same feelings I remember having over Star Wars as a kid.

Absolutely loved this. I don't get the criticism Zoe/Gamora has been receiving--she was every bit as good as the rest of the group. Yeah, the villains were sort of one dimensional but it hardly mattered in a movie with this much heart where every joke lands. Ronan and Nebula were both scary fucking killers anyway. I hope we get more Nebula in part two. Interesting look at Thanos as well. I like how he looks and sounds, but it's Brolin so no surprise there

HEY I TALK SPOILERS HERE FOR A BIT SO BE ADVISED

FOR REAL, DO NOT READ ON IF YOU DIDN'T SEE IT AND ARE ALL HATEFUL ABOUT SPOILERS

The part where Drax comforts Rocket after that earlier interaction where Rocket was kind of a jerk to him was one of the many perfect moments in Guardians. I don't know for sure why but that and seeing Yondu single handedly take out Ronan's heavies might've been my favorite parts. So many to choose from, though. I LOVED the ending with Nova Reilly explaining crimes to Rocket and Drax and regenerating Groot dancing to Jackson 5.
Oh and lest I forget, "He got my dick message!" and the black light joke! Soooooo good!

What sort of trouble?

The jokes can get pretty raunchy at times - Gunn and Perlman did quite a job pushing the boundaries of it being a Marvel movie. Violence-wise, nothing too brutal - one or two scenes might be a bit much, and one of them involves a death.

Overall, I think it should be mostly fine. Hopefully there'll be other opinions besides mine.

Loved it. Tied for my favorite Marvel movie with Winter Soldier which had a much more sleek and solid script, but I thought this one did a great job considering they had to introduce the entire cosmic everything and 5 main characters. Loved the tone, loved the atmosphere. I thought all the character introductions were spectacular and think they did a great job with all the leads. Drax and Gamora ended up being my favorite.

Def. the most visually interesting of their films to date imo.

I will note though that the one thing I want Marvel to stop doing is having such formulaic 3rd acts.Giant space ships are always falling onto a city or a city is being destroyed *cue heroic sacrifice moments. This one was cute in how it subverted those tropes but I always find myself having slight 3rd act fatigue in all their great ones. Idk I think its a problem with the genre in general but it was good to see that they were willing to deviate from formula enough to even have a Guardians movie. Makes me really excited for the studio's future.

I saw this in IMAX 3D and it was amazing. My first IMAX movie too. Easily one of my favorite movies ever and it lived up to my expectations. The whole theaters including me were laughing the whole entire time, it was awesome. I love you, Rocket. Made me feel like a kid again. This movie had everything for me, a perfect balance. I didn't even have a favorite character cause I think they were so well done. Better then the Avengers I think. Even with peoples gripes about the main villain, I didn't have a problem with. If you are on the fence about seeing this, GO SEE IT. Especially with an audience. This is entertainment at it's best.

Saw this and loved it. I would like to give a slow golf clap to Hollywood for putting together a very solid summer of blockbusters after a couple summers of mostly mediocrity. It was nice to go to the movies this summer and, for the most part, not be disappointed by the wasted millions of dollars up on the screen.

This was brilliant.

I watch this, and I'm just ten kinds of jealous. As a lifelong Transformers fan, the fact that this exists and we're stuck with that asshole Bay making virtually the same crapfest movie over and over again makes me bitter. This is the kind of stuff Transformers movies should be made out of.

Super fun movie! As expected, there were a lot of great Star Wars vibes. Lived up to my expectations for sure. Absolutely gorgeous movie, too: the main title sequence w/ Quill and the dogfight in Knowhere stand out. Worth the extra dough for IMAX 3D.

That line John C. Reily's character gave about "I don't think anyone could be 100% dick" was brilliant. Maybe my favorite single bit of dialogue in the movie, and John C. was the perfect actor to deliver it. Dave Bautista killed it. Lee Pace did great with what was essentially a one-note character, but I guess you kinda need a 1-track minded villain when the galaxy is at stake? Loved Nebula. Glad she survived. I also have to echo what littlemonkey613 said about 3rd-act fatigue: when Quill and Ronan were in that storm of energy, all I could think of was Thor and Malekith. Not a major complaint, but when you're putting out as many movies as Marvel is, it's important to pay attention to overlap and repetition like that. Watching that made me hope for a Marvel movie (looking at you Dr. Strange) that's not pre-occupied with being an action movie, and goes more for a character/emotional catharsis during the climax. Just a thought.

This movie was super formulaic, and what makes that even sadder is that it is an obvious attempt to deciate from formula. Nonetheless it is a commitment rather than a deviation.

What saves the movie from this curse is its characters. Its sort of odd that in this one movie marvel introduces five characters each more interesting and deep than several of the Avengers combined. Its a competently directed, well paced movie too, so it ends up being enjoyable even if it is ultimately super predictable.

Oddly it wasnt particularly more or less funny than other marvel movies even though this one is branded as comedy. It has an equal number of attempts at humor as say Iron Man or the Avengers, which i think why it had trouble setting itself apart.

Really enjoyed the bit with Howard the Duck. I love that they went there.

I liked the third act better the first time I saw it when it was called Independence Day.

KIDDING (kinda) i loved the movie!

I thought it started off pretty awkwardly. I didn't like the pace and the scene switches were jarring. But the movie improved rapidly and really got into a great groove during the prison breakout. The part with the gravity was genius. Very well-written, cool to watch, and gave Rocket Racoon (sorry, I'm calling him by his real name) credibility.

As said, Batista impressed. Groot was done really well, and man Bradley Cooper hit it out of the park with the voice acting. He def. went away from his typical acting and challenged himself there.

Nebula & Ronan the Accuser looked so awesome. I read the Infinity event from Marvel a few months ago, so seeing Ronan back as a relentless bad guy was a change of pace from my last reading of him.

Thought the CG looked good overall, with some noticeable weak parts (Thanos, the creatures they were gambling on in the bar).

Wonder why Glen Close took this role? She barely did anything, anyone could have done it. Maybe a bigger role down the line.

So how many Infinity Stones have we def. seen/know exist? The gem from GotG, the Tesseract, the red goo from Thor 2, and what else?

Not a bad year for Chris Pratt w/Lego Movie & now this eh?

Most people seem to agree now that Loki's sceptre is an Infinity Stone as well, though I swear it was established in Avengers that it was an off-shoot of the Tesseract's power. That wouldn't explain why he has it before encountering the Tesseract, though. Hm.

We've confirmed three, though. Tesseract is the Space stone, GotG is the Power stone, and the Aether is...something. Soul? Reality? One of the two.

:::::::::::::::::SPOILERS IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE PHASE 1 AND 2 TRAILER:::::::::::::

Dat Thanos tho. I think once they give him time, he might be one of the greatest villains ever put on film. Cause damn, just look at him and read his backstory. Loki is awesome and all but I think Thanos will be the top big bad soon. Maybe Thanos won't be as loved as him though. Anyway, I can't wait for Guardians 2. I want it more than The Avengers: Age of Ultron. But Avengers 3 and GOTG are tied for me right now. Oh yeah and "I will bathe the starways in your blood." Up there with "Why So Serious?" for me now. I just want an audio book of Josh Brolin saying stuff in his Thanos voice and a dancing baby Groot. Make it happen Marvel. :P

I thought a lot of the comedy AND drama fell pretty flat compared to other Marvel Studios outings but overall I was quite pleased anyway.

However, I very much appreciated the boundary-pushing PG-13 humor and ZOMFG Cosmo & HOWARD THE DUCK, ffs, LOLZ!!!

:D

MOAR, PLZ.

Never really gave a fuck about this comic book except for the SEMINAL '90s run by Jim Valentino, so I'm KINDA pissed that they turned Yondu into Merle-in-Space but w/e. He was still a badass so all's well that ends well, I guess.

Anyway.

Fun movie. Kinda got location-fatigue like the 15th time they introduced a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe..but I guess that was kinda the whole point so it's all good. It did what it set out to do and left me wanting.

I would be all over an audio Thanos adventure. I totally agree, I think he has the potential to rival Sauron, Voldermort or even Vader as a big-time cinema villain. As long as they show his wicked, darkly playful side instead of making him a Dexter-esque butcher like in some of the recent comics have (specifically Thanos Rising). Here's hoping they delve into his backstory onscreen, specifically the unrequited love with lady Death and his attempts to win her over by endless killing. That has to be one of my favorite comic book storylines of all time. I don't know if Marvel would dedicate an entire movie to him, but maybe a Thanos-centric one shot leading up to Avengers 3?

Back to the movie: loved everything about it. Been following the current comic book series for the last year, so I was really hyped to see these characters on-screen. I really don't think it could have been any better. Favorite moment has got to be Peter's dance-off with Ronan. Seriously, how did the actors keep a straight face during filming?

A solo Thanos movie as a Phase 3 prequel to Avengers 3 would be fucking amazing. I'm actually going to be crushed now if they don't announce that in the plans. Brolin could easily carry that picture and it would be an extremely fun journey, and it'd be so meta and philosophical that you wouldn't even hate to worry about it not being r rated. You could easily gloss over all the death by using the death character herself as a plot device to cut away at the right times and use dialogue instead. It could span 3 different time lines; Thanos as a young man, Thanos on his mid life death quest, and current Thanos and his collecting of the infinity stones and the gauntlet. And you could even let the audience who didn't know go on thinking death was a real live girl he was lusting for most of the film, and have the death/not a real person be some kind of big third act reveal. It would be the absolute perfect lead in film, and put Marvel once again at the forefront in terms of leading the way and showing how a villain film would truly be done the right way. Ugh. They better do it.

I'm reasonably certain they'll be keeping that element intact for the films. Hasn't that pretty much always been his motivation for EVERYTHING, after all?

Plus, they've ALREADY introduced his daughters...not to mention the SUPREMELY awesome fact that he was literally introduced onscreen smiling at the comment made towards him that fucking with the Avengers was the equivalent of *ahem* courting death.

;)

OMFG, what a BRILLIANT introduction and line of dialogue.

Look, I have no doubt if it was likely in cards that we would have heard some rumblings about it, so yea chances are slim to none. But show me where there is a definitive Phase 3 schedule with all confirmed titles? There isn't. There are some films we know will pop up, and a bunch of release dates with speculation but that's about it. There is still some mystery there. So don't speak in absolutes like you have this full confirmation of 6 years of releases in front of you because you don't. Dick.

So everything I thought about this movie has already been said, minus a few things. I think I'm the only one who thinks Josh Brolin isn't the right voice for Thanos. Maybe it's just because I've been waiting to see him make another appearance since the avengers, and when I finally got to see that, it was a little underwhelming. Not menacing at all and just a short scene talking business.

Best part of the movie: The look on Starlords face when someone finally calls him Starlord.

Worst part of the movie: Post credits scene. was REALLY hoping for some kind of Avengers 2 tease.

It's pretty much the same shit. Same good guy with witty humor and self-depreciation, same villain hell-bent on domination for no particular reason, and so on.

It's not a bad film by any means but can you really tell me the difference between this and the recent captain america? There's no risks taken even though i heard this was such a long shot for Marvel.... really, all that was a long shot was the characters not being known. Replace them with any other marvel character of late and you have essentially the same movie.

Once Iron Man blew up Marvel pretty much sticked to that formula for everything else. I'm tired of them, really tired. I wont see another Marvel flick in the movie theaters for a long time. All rentals from here on out.

Yah? What's the problem?

If i'm bored at home and a new one comes out on DVD i'll check it out. If all of a sudden i hear that some new marvel franchise is completely different maybe i'll give it a shot at the theater. What's hard to understand here?
