Well, goddamnit.

50 seems incredibly young for a fatal heart attack, especially for a woman. Any further word on what's up with that?

Picked up a couple of her books over the years but haven't really dug in yet. I've always been looking forward to 'em, though. And I still occasionally crack people up, confuse them, and/or blow their minds with No More Mr. Nice Girl when I have the chance. Sadface.

And I had to notify the internet of a fallen friend a few years back. "R.I.P." does seem a bit insensitive for those of non-metaphysical/afterlife persuasions. A lot of people don't seem to consider that.

But I eventually just rolled with R.I.P. anyway 'cause it got the point across most directly and succinctly. Plus, he sincerely would not have cared at that point, lol.

Just throwing that out there.

Someone very special to me had to endure the indignity of this man's cult interrupting the funeral of someone close to her. 6-7 years ago I'd probably be having fits of psychotic joy, now I'm only concerned that this news just brings up that devastating time in her life again. The only positive thing I can muster from this is that now that the head of the snake has been bashed in the rest of the body will be sure to go now. There have been numerous reports that there is heavy internal strife within the Phelps family, with people leaving, etc.

This song best described my feelings on this whole mess that this man left behind and the true irrelevance of his message and life's work.

I'm beyond sad. Robin Williams was someone I grew up watching. Not just as a child but for so many years. Moscow on the Hudson, Aladdin, Dead Poets Society, Baron Munchausen, Awakenings, Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting, Jumanji, Death to Smoochy, One Hour Photo, Cadillac Man, Nine Months, The Birdcage, Insomnia, The World's Greatest Dad, Deconstructing Harry, and all of those HBO specials. I'm very devastated by this and yes, depression is a disease and he must have been going through hell.

Thank you Robin for the joy that you put into our hearts.

He had a larger than life persona, with an explosive personality that was full of life and could always make you laugh. Robin Williams because he was so full of life you always thought he would be there. His public persona was happy and hilarious but tragic that in his personal life he couldn't get the help he needed.

Used to always see him out and about in S.F. We used to do Sunday Dim Sum, the place was pretty popular so if you got there after 9 you would have to wait in line to get a table. Well here comes Robin, didn't use his star power at all, instead of jumping line he decided to to do what he did, went into his bits and had the whole line buckled over in laughter, everyone offered to grab his tab, he of course refused, and said, "Give me your number, after my divorce I might need that". Great guy, humble as all fuck, sometimes the biggest smile hides the biggest demons.

Robin Williams masterpiece, IMHO, is the drama One Hour Photo. He gives a superb performance as a lonely, psychotic stalker who becomes obsessed with one of the families that he develops film for. His ability to play that kind of a role and the title role in Mrs. Doubtfire shows what a talented, versatile actor he was.

What Dreams May Come was also a good film and will be hard to watch now, given the subject (life after death, suicide, depression) that the film addresses.

"When someone gets to 63 I imagined, hoped, I suppose, that maturity would grant an immunity to adolescent notions of suicide but today I read that suicide isn’t exclusively a young man’s game. Robin Williams at 63 still hadn’t come to terms with being Robin Williams.

Today Robin Williams is part of the sad narrative that we used to turn to him to disrupt. What platitudes then can we fling along with the listless, insufficient wreaths at the stillness that was once so animated and wired, the silence where the laughter was? What I might do is watch Mrs Doubtfire. Or Dead Poets Society or Good Will Hunting and I might be nice to people, mindful today how fragile we all are, how delicate we are, even when fizzing with divine madness that seems like it will never expire."

I saw The Angriest Man in Brooklyn several weeks ago. Its not very good at all and I don't recommend it to anyone, but one thing I remember thinking while watching it was that Robin Williams seems to have been missing that spark, that lively something he always had in his eyes. Except for a scene or two where he briefly came to life, he just seemed to be trudging through it with a weight on him, trying to do good work to not disappoint everybody on set, but deep down didn't want to be there. I chalked it up to age catching up to him, but now I have a different perspective.

There is actually a scene where he tried to kill himself by jumping off a bridge, but someone dragged him out of the river. So...yeah.

I can tell that years from now I'll be as devastated by it as I am today. Not like the initial shock but still that deeply sad about it. I was actually thinking about him a few days before it happened because there's a documentary coming out on Dock Ellis, the MLB pitcher who threw a no-hitter on LSD that Robin did a bit about on his last HBO special. Thinking about it made me remember that time I mentioned earlier about the Met special. I'm not that big at all on wanting to meet celebrities, but I thought then it would have been nice to have told him thank you for that.

Like most people, I'm devastated by the loss of Robin Williams. How many actors or comedians match the breadth of his work? I don't think there's any other actor who has made me laugh so much in some roles and made my heart break with others. "One Hour Photo" is one of my favorite movies and favorite lead performances ever - due in part because (like any great actor) Robin seemed to bring the weight of his life experience to the role. I'm hesitant to watch it again since we now have a clearer picture of RW's real-life demons.

Ultimately though, I'm grateful for the laughs AND tears he provided because both have inspired & moved me in different ways (and will continue to) throughout my life.

I also wanted to point out that Dillinger Escape Plan / Ben Weinman / Party Smasher Inc have shared something my older brother Joe has written in regards to Robin Williams and depression in general. Joe is the founder of The You Rock Foundation (http://yourockfoundation.org/) -- an online platform created to help young people combat depression via the sharing of popular musicians own experiences w/ the illness -- and I'm so proud of him:

FIFTY Rohypnol pills were in his stomach, and Courtney found a suicide note and later gave it to the Seattle police.

Anyway, she is dead and this is not the time to to talk about her defending Israel, something pretty much all good American Jews do anyway.

The WAY she died is a real eye-opener. These endoscopy clinics are so prevalent, they're like 7-11s, where gastroenterologists have a few extra anesthesiology certifications and they call 911 if something happens. That clinic is now under investigation. I sure as hell ain't going to anything but a hospital for anything from now on, that's for sure.

But she was a really really nice lady. Word is she put the kids of all of her staff through college, that she was nice to anybody working around her, if anybody was sick, any of their family was sick, she sent flowers or gifts, that she was always so kind and generous. She's from a different era, that Don Rickles "roast" era of comedy, one that I never fully understood, honestly, but the industry always (and still does, really) treated women like substandard citizens and she had to bust through that ceiling.

She was 81. She had a hoarse throat and went in for what was considered a "routine" endoscopy at an endocopy clinic (http://pix11.com/2014/09/04/ny-state-health-dept-investigating-clinic-that-operated-on-joan-rivers/) where they evidently removed a nodule or two and she stopped breathing, went into cardiac arrest, she was rushed to Mount Sinai, had been on a respirator / life support in ICU ever since. She was probably "high risk" due to her advanced age, and the investigation relates to why a clinic would even do that procedure and not send her to a hospital with a real anesthesiologist attending.

(p.s.: Jew, an ancient tribe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_group), passed down through a matriarchal lineage, not exclusively identified by "Judaism" which of course you should know but let's not digress)

On another sad note for us serious film buffs, Donatas Banionis of Solaris died at age 90. (http://www.avclub.com/article/rip-donatas-banionis-star-solaris-208860)

My all-time favorite Bond henchman. Plus, I love his role in Happy Gilmore. "That's two thus far Shooter". "Oh you can count, good for you". "And you can count on me waiting for you at the parking lot". "I believe that belongs to Mr. Gilmore"

In fact, that line-up with Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Nora Dunn, Victoria Jackson, and Dennis Miller with Kevin Nealon is probably the best line-up of the series w/ the exception of the original cast with Bill Murray.
