I've loved John McCain ever since he did a show on MTV talking to young voters in 96 or so.

He definitely had class. He was a maverick who blazed his own trail.
And I love that the final part of his legacy was being a thorn in the Idiot In Chief's side.
He also spent a lot of his career in bipartisan endeavors.
I think his FINAL message was about the importance of working together.
I kind of see what he represents, at least in that regard, as both what we desperately need, but also, sadly, a dying relic of the past.

Damn again.

Mac Miller, dead of an OD at 26. (http://www.tmz.com/2018/09/07/mac-miller-dead-dies/)

It's too early to tell whether or not the overdose was intentional, but the timing of it (just months after his breakup with Ariana Grande, followed very quickly by her moving on to someone else) suggests that his drug problems were only made worse by the split. Its somewhat painful to learn of someone letting his life fall apart at such a young age. It seems like he really should have tried to get help.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm not really blaming anyone for his death. He was battling addiction for years, but the proximity of his fatal overdose to his breakup with Ariana leaves room for people to think there was a causal connection, allowing trolls to put the blame on her (https://people.com/music/ariana-grande-turns-off-instagram-comments-blame-her-mac-miller-death/). It's still sad that he couldn't make it out of his battle alive at only 26.

Oli Herbert, the guitarist from All That Remains passed away. I saw them like five years ago at the South By So What Festival. They were the headliners. I was on the rail for their set, and the promoters cut it short by like seven songs because they screwed up a lot of things that day. Oli jumped off stage and walked his set list over to me and signed it. He was a really nice guy. RIP

Blake's 7 was great (I would encourage anyone reading who has even a casual interest in dystopian sci-fi to look up the first episode on youtube), and JP was also good in the hammer movies. Definitely one of those people where it's hard to name many others like her

Controversial parts of his legacy re: how much credit Kirby & Ditko deserved aside (this has been discussed ad nauseam for decades, no need to rehash here), Stan the Man is a mythic cultural figure, and one of the most important people of all time. His vision knew no bounds, and the dozens and dozens characters that are loved the world over are because of him. The comic book industry also lost of it's most tireless ambassadors. Stan has fought valiantly for decades to give comics their proper place in culture. His loss will hurt an already dying industry even more.

Excelsior.

Peter Tork and The Monkees were awesome. R.I.P.
this hurts.

When i was a kid, as in single digits, i convinced myself that the Monkees was a reality show.
My parents explained to me that this wasn't the case.
THEN, i decided that all of their adventures HAD actually happened, but they couldn't be there to film it all, so the boys reenacted actual episodes from their lives for the show.
THEN, my pops broke the news to me about the musical situation, which, as a young musician, utterly fascinated me, especially Mike and Peter's dissatisfaction with the whole thing.
later, 12 or 13 year old, early 90s, grass smoking elevenism was utterly blown away by Head and its soundtrack.

I didn't keep up, though: by 92, it was all about NIN, Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Primus and...you get the idea.

I STILL show Head to people from time to time. I still love a SHITLOAD of their songs, even the ones they didn't write. also, you know what's funny? no one seems to give a SHIT who's writing the songs of pop stars these days, you know? I think the Monkees are part of that. Furthermore, i think their influence can be seen in groups like One Direction and N'Sync and all of their ilk, not to mention, hell, Oasis for instance.
legend has it that they outsold the Beatles at one point. i think it's been debunked, but continues to be repeated by reputable news sources, so who knows.

i adore the music. i love their story. i love SO many things about them.
Now that i think about it, they were the first rock group i was OBSESSED with, and it all happened when they started showing the old episodes on Nickelodeon 86 or so.
They were UTTERLY FUCKING SEMINAL to my idea of what "rock" should be. As a little kid, they were "my beatles/stones."

And Peter was always my favorite.

:( :( :(

time to blast some Prodigy... fucking sad newswell, dude, yes, in a way. I get it. I've been a fan since 93ish, and I didn't necessarily like the "keithy as frontman" change.
But he's been inexorably tied to the identity of The Prodigy ever since, and has done vocals for 22 years. So, dude, idk. I honestly doubt Liam will continue as The Prodigy. I expect future releases to be "Liam Howlett" or " Liam Howlett featuring Maxim Reality" or something.

If he chooses to go in that direction, I'd completely respect the decision, but I would also say it's perfectly reasonable to continue forward as The Prodigy. There's a particular sound to their music that's different in style and tone to the solo music Liam Howlett's put out. If the music is "in the style of" Prodigy releases, call it Prodigy. Ultimately it's up to him of course. Probably the last thing on his mind right now.

EDIT... and in hindsight, I probably should have posted this response in the Prodigy thread. My bad.

All of us Detroit and Cleveland (and Parma and Hamtramck) kids are mourning the death of The Ghoul (Ron Sweed) (https://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/television/2019/04/03/ghoul-ron-sweed-horror-died-death-obituary/3348674002/), dead at 70.

“He was the Hunter S. Thompson of trash,” said Jerry Vile, the Detroit artist, media maker and creator of The Dirty Show. “You didn’t have to be an adult to know he wasn’t playing by the rules. He was everybody’s introduction to anarchy. He influenced a lot of people. He was like the proto-punk. It was true revolution for the hell of it. Blowing up stuff with fireworks — we weren’t supposed to do that. But here he was, doing it on the TV.”

Sweed like to show old horror films. Really old. Often really bad ones.

"Those movies he shows have been around so long that anyone who hasn't seen them by the time they get passed on to The Ghoul's show must've had the TV set off for 10 years," one reader complained to Bettelou Peterson, the Free Press TV writer. The Ghoul, of course, mocked those films as part of his act.

He was the greatest. RIP, Ghoul. We'll never forget you. :(

She was a recluse for decades, had such a rotten life, treated terribly by three of her four husbands, one of them embezzled all of her money. But when she finally came out of hiding in 2014, she looked great! (For 92) She made a surprise appearance at a fundraiser birthday celebration and people cried when they saw her. There are photos of her online from her 97th birthday, just weeks before she suddenly fell ill from the flu then pneumonia, and she had been in really good health, walked her dogs daily, etc. She was amazing, one of the greats.

Police brutality, citizens slaughtering each-other, politicians don't really giving a shit about the former two, president assassinations and assassination attempts, VIP prisoner committing suicide on a suicide watch... man, I would be severely depressed as a US citizen from the amount of apathy I'd feel.

That movie is so intense...

You know, it's intense, but it's also a GREAT straight up western, up until the part that earned it the "horror" tag. It's an odd duck, in that way.

I saw a Sid Haig tribute video, with his full list of acting credits, and DAMN. He had SO many. He'd been working for sixty years, and did everything from Gunsmoke, to Get Smart, to a bunch of old school exploitation films, to THX 1138, and THEN the Rob Zombie stuff. He spoke about never giving up on this video, and it was moving.

Apparently he died after falling in his home and getting an infected lung from vomiting in his sleep. Something about complications from the lung infection, aged 80.

It’s a lot bigger than that:

The search turned up 41 “vacuum-sealed” bags of marijuana, six bottles of prescription codeine cough syrup, two 9 mm pistols, a .40-caliber pistol, a high-capacity ammunition magazine and metal-piercing bullets, according to the sources. Two men identified by police as working security for Higgins were charged with misdemeanor offenses for illegally possessing the guns and ammunition.
