Well, 2017 is really going to suck. Sorry for the double-post but.... John Hurt dead at 77: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/john-hurt-dead-elephant-man-809521
You have to respect a man that is willing to parody one of his great death scenes for a comedy. R.I.P. Kane, Ollivander, Elephant Man, Jesus...

Goodbye, War Doctor. I shall not forget you.

RIP, Mike Ilich (http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/18661440/mike-ilitch-owner-detroit-tigers-red-wings-dies-age-87) :-(
Official statement from Ilitch Holdings:
Mike Ilitch, founder of Little Caesars Pizza, owner of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, Chairman of Ilitch Holdings, and champion for Detroit, died today at a local hospital. He was 87.
"My father was a once-in-a-generation entrepreneur, visionary and leader, setting the tone for our organization and our family," said Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. "He made such a positive impact in the world of sports, in business and in the community, and we will remember him for his unwavering commitment to his employees, his passion for Detroit, his generosity to others and his devotion to his family and friends. Together my family and the company celebrate the tremendous man he was, and we will continue to work hard to uphold his remarkable legacy. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to work with him to nurture and grow our businesses, but mostly, I’m grateful to have called him my Dad, and I know my siblings feel the same."
Mike Ilitch was married to Marian Ilitch, his partner in life and business for 61 years. They have seven adult children Denise (Jim Scalici), Ron, Michael Jr. (Noelle), Lisa (Glenn Murray), Atanas (Patty), Christopher (Kelle), Carole, 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mike Ilitch’s life is a remarkable American success story. He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1929 to Macedonian immigrants Sotir Ilitch and Sultana Tasseff Ilitch who came to the United States in 1924. He had one brother Peter who died in 2009. Ilitch was educated in Detroit where he attended Clinton Elementary, Post Intermediate and Cooley High School, where he was an All-City athlete in baseball and track.
Upon graduation from high school in 1947, the Detroit Tigers offered him a minor league contract, but he decided instead to join the U.S. Marine Corps. Ilitch served from 1948-1952 at Parris Island, Quantico and Pearl Harbor. Ilitch took great pride in serving his country and credits the values and discipline he learned while serving keys to his success as a businessman and entrepreneur.
After discharge from the Marines, the Tigers again offered Ilitch a minor league contract; he played shortstop in the minor league system for four seasons (1952-1955) making it to AAA and hitting over .300, until a knee injury ended his baseball career. He later worked as a door-to-door salesman until he and his wife Marian saved enough money to open the first Little Caesars in Garden City, Michigan on May 8, 1959.
That single mom and pop pizza shop grew into the world’s largest carryout pizza chain, with restaurants in 20 countries and territories throughout the world. Success in the pizza business enabled Ilitch to invest in other businesses in food, sports and entertainment. All businesses are headquartered in the Detroit metropolitan area and will continue to thrive under family ownership, led by President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc., Christopher Ilitch.
Today, Ilitch Holdings, Inc. provides professional services to the companies owned by Mike and/or Marian Ilitch. The Ilitch companies employ 23,000 full-time and part-time colleagues worldwide and posted revenues of $3.4 billion in 2016. The Ilitch companies include: Ilitch Holdings, Little Caesars Pizza, Blue Line Foodservice Distribution, the Detroit Red Wings, the Detroit Tigers, Olympia Entertainment, Olympia Development, Little Caesars Pizza Kits Fundraising Program and Champion Foods. Marian Ilitch owns the MotorCity Casino Hotel.
True to Mr. Ilitch’s vision for a bustling downtown area, the Ilitch organization will continue its transformational District Detroit project under Christopher Ilitch’s leadership, transforming dozens of blocks of largely vacant land in Downtown Detroit into a dynamic, vibrant area for everyone in the community to enjoy. The District Detroit will include office, retail and residential spaces, as well as the new Little Caesars Arena. The $1.2 billion project is expected to have a $2.1 billion total economic impact on Detroit, the region and Michigan.
Mr. Ilitch believed passionately in giving back to the community. Among his many contributions to others, Mr. Ilitch established the Little Caesars Love Kitchen in 1985. With two trucks on the road to serve those in need, these restaurants on wheels have served more than three million people.
Additionally, inspired by the story of a veteran returning to civilian life, Ilitch founded the Little Caesars Veterans Program in 2006. This program provides honorably discharged veterans with financial incentives and other support to help them open a franchise with Little Caesars. Further, Ilitch established the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey Program in 1968, and it has provided opportunities for tens of thousands of youngsters to play the great game of hockey over the years.
Ilitch Charities and its affiliates, the Detroit Red Wings Foundation and the Detroit Tigers Foundation, have given more than $35 million in cash and in-kind contributions to deserving organizations across the community since 2005. Additionally, Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch have personally gifted nearly $50 million to Detroit’s Wayne State University, $40 million of which was dedicated to establish the new Mike Ilitch School of Business, which will train and educate the next generation of the city’s great entrepreneurs."

I'm absolutely heartbroken. I love that man. Such a wonderful and versatile actor. He was a director too and he was good at it. I greatly recommend Frailty; a very underestimated thriller he directed and acted in.
Of all the praises coming in, I love this one from Arnold Schwarzenegger:
Bill Paxton could play any role, but he was best at being Bill - a great human being with a huge heart. My thoughts are with his family.

Bill was also the narrator of James Cameron's documentary Ghosts of the Abyss in which they dived to record extended images of the wreck of the Titanic. I like this more than the movie. One sequence in particular always stuck with me because it's the kind of thing that would happen to me: the dive to the ship (and back) took hours and the guys were stack up like sardines in the little Russian deep subs. After some hours, Paxton announced that he really needed to pee, right now; so the other guy just handed him an empty bottle. It's so funny and Bill was the first to laugh at it.
I'm going to miss him so much.

Seriously though, I read that it could have been motivated by money because his being dead would mean there could be no civil suit and the money would be left for his daughter. Not sure how true that is.

Legendary musician dies on stage during birthday concert
WHEN Col. Bruce Hampton slowly fell to his knees during the finale of his star-studded birthday concert, fans and musicians alike thought it was another one of his quirky performance acts.
Fourteen-year-old guitar phenom Brandon “Taz” Niederauer tore into a blistering solo as the 70-year-old man lay motionless just feet away, his arm draped over a speaker.
For several more minutes, dozens of musicians — including John Popper of Blues Traveler, Warren Haynes of The Allman Brothers Band and John Bell of Widespread Panic — jammed away to one of Hampton’s favourite songs Turn On Your Love Light. The fans danced and the musicians smiled as they waited for him to get up.
But Col. Bruce never did.
The eccentric guitarist and singer known as the forefather of the jam band scene died after collapsing Monday night at the end of the show billed by Atlanta’s Fox Theatre as “Hampton 70: A Celebration of Col. Bruce Hampton.” He had turned 70 a day earlier.
“As I played tonight, I had a joy that I’ve never had ... But it was eerie,” banjo player the Rev. Jeff Mosier said in a tearful Facebook post. “And then at the end, Bruce looked like he was jokingly worshipping that young guitar player. And he got down on his knees and I was getting ready to do the same thing. ... I was lucky to know him and I was lucky to be there.”
Hampton founded several bands, and while wealth and fame eluded him, he was widely acknowledged as an influence on other leading musicians. He also played the role of a songwriting band manager in Billy Bob Thornton’s 1996 film Sling Blade.
Thornton joined Hampton on stage for the Love Light encore and beamed as Hampton belted out the first part of the tune with his bluesy growl. Hampton paced across the stage and teased the audience by pretending to leave before he re-emerged. Then he fell to his knees.
When people began to realise this was no stunt, the band abruptly ended the song and a hush fell over the crowd. Stunned fans looked at one another and asked, “What just happened?”
“We’re going to take care of business backstage here,” Thornton said. “Thank you so much. We love you so much. Thanks for honouring Bruce Hampton on his 70th.”
Outside, fans gathered on the street as an ambulance and firetruck arrived. Hampton was carried out of the theatre on a stretcher. People cheered when he was loaded into the ambulance and shouted “Brrruuuccccee” as they had done throughout the night.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the death to The Associated Press.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band, also on the line-up, posted a statement on its official Facebook page from Hampton’s family.
“After collapsing on stage surrounded by his friends, family, fans and the people he loved Col. Bruce Hampton passed away. The family is asking for respect and privacy at this difficult time,” the statement said.
Hampton showed no sign anything was amiss before his collapse. He appeared on stage early in the four-hour night, conducting and singing with a band. Later, he played and sang several tunes, including Fixin’ to Die, a song he had performed many times before. This time, though, the lyrics turned out to be prophetic:
Feeling funny in my mind, Lord
I believe I’m fixing to die
Well, I don’t mind dying
But I hate to leave my children crying

No! He and John Goodman were the entire reason why Red State worked as a film -- Parks' performance in that is top-tier brilliance. His Kill Bill roles were spectacular and, for me, iconic. Such a pro that could disappear into a role -- I always felt like the way that people talk about Gary Oldman was a truer description of Parks. He had seriously become one of my favorite character actors around in the past decade. Such a shame.

This really puts a damper in my enjoyment of Roger Ailes being dead.
I was never a huge Soundgarden fan but I can't act like they weren't the real deal and every time I saw them live, two things stuck out to me -- how powerfully loud as hell their guitars were, and how unbelievably strong and flawless Chris's voice was. After just seeing a part of their set a couple weeks ago at a festival, and having a sense of taking them for granted as something of a permanent fixture in the rock world, this is really shocking. I always had a soft spot for Fell On Black Days and it's going to be playing a bit in my house today.

He's debating whether or not to go on the side of Jewish protesters, as he is a Jewish man and should stick up for his people, or to go over to the side of a Palestinian chicken restaurant, which holds heavily anti-Semitic views and yet produces incredible chicken and has also led to him getting laid. It's his comedic indecisiveness as he weighs the pros and cons on a situation that, for most people, should be an easy one to make morally, and in this context would imply a difficulty in deciding whether to be happy about someone like Ailes dying or depressed about someone like Cornell passing.

Roger Moore is someone I grew up on as he's the first guy I knew as James Bond. Later on, I would prefer the likes of Sean Connery, Daniel Craig, and Timothy Dalton but Moore always had a special place in my heart. He was just a whole lot of fun. He didn't need to be a ruthless killer but someone who played it cool and get the girls. He is my mother's favorite Bond but she knew him first and foremost as Simon Templar aka the Saint. That was a show she, her siblings, her mother (R.I.P.), and other relatives loved to watch. My mother's favorite Bond film is The Spy Who Loved Me and she is sad because she loved that guy growing up. I will miss that man. He was nothing but entertaining such as this little clip as Inspector Clouseau.

Unfortunately by the time I got to the table, they had to start charging for autographs because there was so many people, and I didn't have any money, but photos were free. Sad thing is I can't find a copy of the photo anywhere. Could I swore I backed it up somewhere. Real nice guy. Was in line for a really long time and sleep deprived. Almost fainted when I got up from beside him after my photo because I felt so weak. He asked me I was okay, and I said I was fine and thanked him for being concerned.

Not to mention they had family and were loving fathers. Linkin Park or whatever I thought about Bennington aside this really sucks and is very tragic for his family, band members and friends. That it happened on Cornell's birthday and the fact that they seemed to be close makes it very akward.
Is it the harsh media, is it the low that many people experience when they are off stage? I cannot even imagine.
Prayers go out to his loved ones and all the young people that found something in his music no matter if they thought it became to mediocre or were fans from the very beginning etc. :(

Was also accused of stalking and harassing his ex-wife, which might have contributed to her getting dropped from a major TV show at the time. I also heard something about him abusing her in front of their kids too.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I'm certainly a nerd, but I've never even been to G-Fest (http://www.g-fan.com/html/gfest_xxiv/gfest_xxiv.php).
I've never been good at eulogizing, and these days it too-often turns into a contrived essay rather than a simple summation.
Nakajima embodied what tokusatsu is and should always strive to be.

I was lucky enough to meet Nakajima at a convention last month. He was a very gracious man despite the language barrier, and he made my nephew's day. Very sad to hear that he passed away, but incredibly grateful that I got to meet him.

Dick Gregory, one of the funniest men to have ever lived: https://twitter.com/search?q=%22Dick%20Gregory%22&src=tren
Mr. Gregory was also a very important civil rights activist.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/dick-gregory-dead-stand-up-comedy-legend-civil-rights-activist-was-84-1004479
He was invited to perform on The Tonight Show in 1962, but Gregory said he wouldn't go unless he was able to sit down next to host Jack Paar after his routine and be interviewed. A black performer had never done that before.
"I went in, and as I sat on the couch, talking about my children, so many people called the switchboard at NBC in New York that the circuits blew out," he said. "And thousands of letters came in and folks were saying, 'I didn't know black children and white children were the same.'"
After the Tonight Show appearance, Gregory noted that his salary jumped from $250 for seven nights of work (three shows a night) at the Playboy Club to $5,000 a night. "And the next year and a half, I made $3.9 million," he said. "That is the power."
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/dick-gregory-comedy-legend-civil-rights-activist-dead-84-article-1.3426317
His major break came in 1961 when he was spotted by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner performing at a Chicago nightclub.
The gig included what is now one of Gregory’s best-known jokes: “Last time I was down South, I walked into this restaurant. This white waitress came up and said, ‘We don’t serve colored people here.’ I said, ‘That’s all right. I don’t eat colored people. Bring me a whole fried chicken.’”

Jerry Lewis and Dick Gregory. 2 men who made the world laugh and actually gave a shit about people. Jerry hosted telethons to help children and Dick stood up for the rights of his fellow brothers and sisters.
I just watched The King of Comedy just now for the very first time. Great film and Lewis is great as usual. He and Gregory are true kings of comedy and philanthropy. We will miss them.

Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Salem's Lot, and Poltergeist... :(
Exocet
08-28-2017, 10:35 PM
Ive always been confused with the whole Poltergiest situation...I don't know whether to see it as a Tobe Hooper film or a Steven Spielberg film...
Apparently Tobe Hooper had a breakdown on set and Steven Spielberg took over on the down low because of his contract with E.T...with Poltergeist you can see two different films..
I think its 60 percent Tobe Hooper 40 Percent Spielberg..there is a really horrific Tobe Hooper side, mixed with with the commercial family friendly Spielberg side...its a really odd film, its like two different directors competing. I cant believe it was PG movie
either way I think its one of the best film of the 80s..
And Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the best psychological horror movies of all time, I love how it undermines its title. I always thought he could have been as big as Spielberg or James Cameron or Ridley Scott etc after Poltergeist but his career nose dived. he was an underrated director

I met him in 1999 at an autograph signing at a record store. Knowing how bored and overall grouchy he had become in WCW, his demeanor that day isn't all that surprising. I talked to him for about 5 minutes, and he did well enough to engage but I could kind of tell he wanted to be anywhere else than a place that was blasting loud rock music, and being asked questions of varying interest by marks.

If the sex-positive people I follow on social media are any indication, he has a complex legacy. Some see him as the icon he is in pop culture, but others exploitative and predatory. I've got to say the fact that his plot will be next to Marilyn Monroe's, considering her photos were used without her agreement in the first issue, is creepy as hell.
