I don't know if this is in bad taste to speculate about, but when I hear that someone at this point just died from COVID at the age of 66...
Did they get the vaccine when it was readily available? It has been very easy to get in this country if you're over the age of 65 for a couple months now?

So, I just really wonder, and at this point I think it's somewhat vital to the discussion, and the article/obituary doesn't mention the word "vaccine." Maybe he was immunocompromised? I don't know, all this stuff is kind of important to a larger and much more important discussion, where there's so many people holding out on getting the vaccine and raising conspiracies and bullshit.

the vaccine is only 90% effective. that 10% means there’s still a chance of getting it.

Yes, but that’s only a vulnerability if you do directly become exposed to the virus, and most reports I’m reading suggest that if you’ve been inoculated, even if you do catch it, the symptoms SHOULD be less severe. I think?

I guess I’m just curious here but really it’s not my business. I’ve spent so much pointless time arguing with anti-vaccine/mask people lately, and they keep referring to cases that defy what scientists and medical professionals are suggesting... and maybe I just feel like this is a time sensitive crisis, and when I hear about an elderly person catching and dying from it at this point, I wish I knew if he was vaccinated, and if there were serious contributing factors.

though yes, I know it’s possible to happen regardless, my friend’s relative died of it after being fully vaccinated... and that’s a raw, personal thing, so of course I’m not going to press for any details there... but I would like to know about “the Milli Vanilli guy”

It actually doesn’t mean that. It’s complicated, but it doesn’t mean that.

It means that vaccinated people had a 90% lower chance than non-vaccinated people in a control group during initial clinical trials.

The actual percentage of vaccinated people in the Pfizer and Moderna trials who got Covid was 0.04%.

Agreed. Efficacy with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines is difficult to explain.
On the flip side, we do know that people who are unvaccinated are getting COVID at the rate the general population was in January, before the vaccine roll out really got underway.

I have idiots in my office who think they don't need the vaccine, and I'm basically tell them they're a ticking time bomb, and back off 6 ft thank you very much.

Billy Gibbons has said they're going to finish out the current tour dates with the tech continuing to fill in on bass. I can't imagine the band would want to cancel after making a promise to Dusty that they'd go on without him.

I was supposed to see them, for the first time, in Amarillo, in 2020. They're one of the very, VERY few good bands cool enough to come to Amarillo. Obviously i didn't get to go.

I sure didn't notice a make-up date for Amarillo on the new schedule, either. I hope there's another leg, though, even if Dusty IS missing.

It looks like Michael K Williams overdosed on the same substance that killed DMX. Both of the stars unknowingly took fentanyl.

Here's the strange part, that I just remembered after reading a news piece regarding Williams:
A couple months ago, he dressed up as DMX for a tribute at the BET awards, and did lyrics for from Slippin', which I've always taken to be, at least partially, about struggling with addiction.
I've always loved his acting, but I only recently learned that he'd been fighting heroin addiction all along.
Perhaps that's part of why he was asked to participate in the DMX tribute.

DMX's death was caused by a combination of covid, and rock cocaine laced with fentanyl.
Today's news suggests that Williams died from fentanyl laced heroin.
Fuck these street chemists putting fent in EVERY DAMN THING.

In hindsight, this is an eerie, heartbreaking coincidence.

Sad about Richard Kirk. I have not looked into his death or personal life or anything but I his recent output. I think I put Shadow Of Fear on my best of 2020 on here. I know I was in the minority of liking that album but I did and a lot of his other non-Cabaret Voltaire music. I even liked the newer drone stuff. And, I still love pretty much everything from Cabaret Voltaire from 79-83. Kind of always hoped Stephen and Richard would get back together but like I said I don't really know anything about their personal lives or personal band history. I just still liked the music they have been making, so its sad because seemed like Kirk still had music left.

you know, there are times when, after death, you come to realize maybe you were too hard on a person.

The ensuing controversy sank his candidacy in a race many felt he had a chance to win in a state that was increasingly tilting Republican. Akin would later write that he regretted apologizing for the remark, arguing that his apology legitimized what he believed were willful distortions of the remarks by his political opponents and the media.
This is not one of those times.

I always respected Colin Powell. I thought him to be a fairly nonpartisan man of integrity who did the best he could in an area of statecraft that wouldn't exist in a more evolved society. He was a decorated vietnam vet. He was the first African American Secretary of State. He was the first Afro-Carribean, and youngest, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was the top military man in dozens of conflicts aside from the ones that were on TV every night.
He didn't APOLOGIZE for Iraq. He TESTIFIED that he was wrong by 04 and attempted to create new ways for the intelligence depts to share information.
And as far as Afghanistan, I mean, yeah, you can blame him, I guess? But note that EVERY house Democrat and EVERY house Republican voted for the use of force in Afghanistan. And the vast majority of them CONTINUED to support it, for a long ass time. So, I'd assume they deserve some blame, too.

I liked Colin Powell. I think he was a great military strategist, speaker, and author.

I haven't read an Anne Rice novel in a long while... I did like Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and Memnoch the Devil (which it seems isn't a fan favorite, but I really liked that one). She had a really engaging style of writing that pulled you in, and some creative approaches to the vampire concept that explored sexuality, morality, religious conviction, and class structure/aristocracy in adventurous ways, and it felt like she really did enjoy herself in her world/character building. Sad news. There really aren't many modern horror novelists more established and unique and celebrated, and in the world of iconic female horror authors, she's there alongside Shirley Jackson and Mary Shelley.

Oh. Oh my dear god. I've been so wrapped up in various crises these past few days, that i didn't hear about Anne Rice.
This breaks my fucking heart. I'm actually in tears.

I've read like MOST of her work. I'm talking 29 books, here, i think? (i never read the Rampling and Roquelaure erotica.)

As a young man obsessed with the occult and darkness and beauty and sex and death, like many of us are, she brought me the most uncanny, imaginative, original tales. She was the queen of gorgeous neo-gothic prose. I discovered her at 12, and was immediately in love.
Anne created the best and most extensive vampire mythos of all time, PERIOD.

Her lush words, dripping with passion and beauty and descriptions of fluid sexuality and pansexuality were MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING in helping me feel ok being bi, or, whatever the fuck i am, when i was young. It was a refuge for a young man being told "there ain't gonna be any goddamn faggots living under my roof" by his father, in 1994.
I'll never forget my mom reading, and then giving me Blackwood Farm, a book steeped in bisexuality, when i was 22 and still going through horrible depression related to all that shit.

She played with history and religion in The Witching Hour, which is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. It's a doorstopper, weaving through generations, with details that put it on the verge of being historical fiction.

Her serious historical fiction was also utterly stunning: Cry to Heaven describes the DEEP pain of Castrati singers. The Feast of All Saints brought brought to life the plight of the free Antebellum Creole folk in 1840s New Orleans, alongside the Haitian Revolution.

She made Jesus walk for me in her Christ the Lord series, which is a FIRST PERSON account of the life of Jesus. Edit: she did this after making a great case for Lucifer in Memnoch the Devil- Jinsai , i LOVED that one too. Lestat drinks the blood of christ, all of the arguments made by Memnoch, yeah. It was fucking awesome.

She ALSO wrote a CS Lewis level non-fiction christian book called Called Out of Darkness, and it was fucking great.

Basically, she's been there for every part of my life since i was a tween.

Basically, this fucking KILLS me. This HURTS. My three big authors are Stephen King, Anne Rice, and John Steinbeck.

I just...FUCK.

In honor of this, for anyone who read the first three or four Vampire Chronicles, READ PRINCE LESTAT.
It's the first TRUE follow up to Queen of the Damned, (because Armand and Blood and Gold and Merrick and such, they all avoided continuing the story.)

And if you've never read an Anne Rice book? If you're a reader, i'd say, take it upon yourself to read The Witching Hour.

JESUS i'm sad.

Yeah, i know she was old.

It's just, she meant a LOT to me. It's still a massive loss.
There's also the part where she did live chats on facebook with her "People of the Page," up until fairly recently, talking about her plans, working on a Vampire Chronicles series scripted by herself and her son (which originally had backing from hulu.)

She was STILL working her ass off trying to get that show off the ground.

ALSO, she was still writing.

No, she wasn't Hemmingway or Dostoyevsky or Tolstoy or whatever, but at her best, she was DEFINITELY the Shelley of her time. The thematic similarities between Frankenstein and the Vampire Chronicles are pretty damned blatant: the search for identity and themes of alienation. In FACT, these themes appear in a LOT of her work, like Servant of the Bones and Ramses the Damned.

Ultimately, though, i really don't care about literary arguments right now, though. It's more "i was in love with this author for about 3/4 of my life, and she meant the fucking world to me, and now she's gone."

It's just like losing Neil from Rush.

It sucks.

In honor of the passing of Ms. Rice, I recommend that you read a lot of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Awesome stuff.

Yup. As we age, everyone dies. But, death teaches us about life. Those vampire books shoulda taught you a lot about that. :)

I've read enough Hawthorne (Faun, Gables, Letter, Romance, all at least twice,) and Dickens (Great Expectations, Bleak House, Two Cities, good GOD most of that shit is depressing) and such for a lifetime: at least a lifetime lived currently, immersed in literature from the 1900s onward.

My current fiction reading list is aimed at finishing up my Pynchon, Vonnegut, Barth, Wallace, Burroughs and De Lillo, not to mention the final Vampire Chronicle and the latest Stephen King.

Aside from that, I've got a BUNCH of biographies on my Kindle, which have been my favorite thing as of late.

I DO wonder if Anne's son, Christopher, will write another Prince Lestat book, especially if his mother had already been working on it. They collaborated on Ramses the Damned part 2 in 2017, and had apparently finished the third, to be released in 2022.

It's amazing how much of it applies TODAY!!!

If Christopher collaborated then, yeah, I imagine he'd carry on the canon.

Ah! I've not read many of those: just whatever was included in this big ass compendium I had for a community college course.

And when I said depressing, I was referring to Dickens. Yes, the Hawthorne I've read is both depressing AND realistic, especially from a feminist viewpoint. Dickens is just GRIM, though, all the way around.

So with Anne Rice, the idea is that many of the Vampire Chronicles are TRUE, and written by Lestat, under the pen name Anne Rice.

Most likely, the real Anne Rice finally joined Prince Lestat's coven.

Rapper Drakeo the Ruler got stabbed to death last night, apparently, at a show in LA.
Slim 400, famous for his song Brusin, (34 million youtube views on that song alone) was murdered on December 8.
Up and coming Memphis rap legend Young Dolph was murdered in late November.

That's three VERY famous young rappers shot or stabbed to death in the past 30 days.
I don't even LISTEN to these young "drill" rappers much, but I'm REALLY concerned by the body count.
There's also been Lil Loaded, Indian Red Boy, Baby CEO, Dope Boy Young, etc etc, and I'm JUST talking about the young, reasonably famous cats who died VIOLENTLY, THIS year, and that's just off the top of my head aside from Drakeo. It's a horrible epidemic.

Gotta admit I had a tear in my eye watching the little CNN retrospective for Bettie White. She was really special.
She worked as an entertainer for EIGHTY YEARS, and she just seemed to bring joy everywhere she went.

It's so crazy to look at her body of work, and see all the stuff she did in her late eighties and nineties.

She's also on the cover of the newest People magazine, and it says BETTY WHITE TURNS 100!
(my wife wound up with a subscription when she signed up for something or another, so I guess that's in our box at the post office.)

It just seemed like she'd live forever, somehow.

Jesus. That's horrible.

But also, having been on suicide watch myself...I mean, you aren't supposed to be able to "walk out of" it. Someone is supposed to be posted up watching you, hence the "watch" part.
They left me in a locked plexiglass room with literally nothing but a paper hospital gown and a mat, with someone outside just staring at me for 8-12 hours, and then someone else would relieve them. That's in the hospital and in jail.
Having someone die while on suicide watch is gross negligence, I think

Nah, this always happens this way.

My Mom reads three newspapers every day and one of the FIRST sections she reads is the obits and death notices.

Her Mom, same thing. “Who DIED?” Not just celebrities, but people you know. People you don’t know at all.

I’ve had a “gut” feeling lately and googled people. Found out my former boss died, my co-worker’s husband died, one of my old friends died. They were all old, so this shit happens.

After we hit 50-55, every day is just luck. I saw funerals of little kids when I worked at that funeral home. Babies, too. Look at the death notice section of any newspaper, daily. Everyday people, with pictures, with stories. Gone. During the heights of Covid, the death notice section of the newspapers are HUGE!!! Many of us don’t recognize or want to recognize celebrities’ mortality, that’s all. But death is an all-ages show and unless Meat Loaf was gunned down by an assassin in his home, or Louis Anderson drowned in his pool, none of this is shocking.

Yes, all these old people are gonna die at about the same time. Look at the Oscars’ “In Memoriam” segment every year. (Some of them I thought were already dead.)

This is a kinda funny Twitter meme …

“OMG why is [insert name here] trending???”

Usually, if they’re old, it’s because they’re dead.

Paul McCartney was trending, everybody was like OMG PAUL MCCARTNEY DIED!? PLEASE TELL ME PAUL MCCARTNEY ISN’T DEAD.

(That in between “who the fuck is Paul McCartney?”)

(Honestly, my husband and I were talking, and neither of us know anything about Bob Saget. Nada. I’m reading about stuff now but none of that was in my life. Seems like he was a really nice guy, though.)
