My favorite Aphex Twin releases so far have been Classics, ...I Care Because You Do., Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and Selected Ambient Works Volume II. I first discovered Aphex Twin through listening to Further Down The Spiral and then seeing the music videos of Come to Daddy and Windowlicker.

Aside from that, I still wonder when the new album's coming out, but I'm certainly not holding my breath either. Either way, I just know that I'm going to have an incessant urge to check it out if it actually comes out. :)

Great news there's a new Aphex twin due out

It's hard to know if he is telling the truth or not, but it's also hard to believe that he has been off the map for so long and to have not been working on anything. It's already been like 6 years since the AFX stuff came out, there's gotta be something new.

how old were u when u first listened to Aphex Twin? i was 15, and it blew my friggin mind having never heard anything remotely experimental like that before. I Care Because You Do as an entrance into the crazier side of electronic music was quite the intro.

I read about him on Wikipedia when I was 15. I had my mum get me a copy of I Care Because You Do when she was in England once based purely on the "freaky" cover. Was instantly hooked. I think the next album I got was Chosen Lords, which remains one of my absolute favourite RDJ releases.

I got into him right around when David Firth was making those Salad Fingers flash cartoons. Firth uses a lot of Aphex music in his animations so he got me hooked. I was probably like 13 or 14. Completely revolutionized my musical self.

I still wished that he'd also put out albums of whatever other best works he had. It's such a tease, especially since he claimed he'd never do it, all because he thought they were too good. :p

On the other hand, I still can't blame him for feeling out of it though, since he's been doing it since his late childhood and early teen years, so it's probably been like another day at the office for him ever since.

Eh, this goose is cooked. Drukqs was one big meh. Kind of like The Fragile in being an overbloated selfindulgent bland mess of a double album that has strangely become a fan cult favourite.
Chosen Lords was more meh.
Don't get me wrong Richard D James and I Care Because You Do are among my favourite albums of all time.
But this guy peaked about 20 years ago, let's admit it.

I'm very sorry you don't like Drukqs, but did you consider that maybe you're the one who's a little self indulgent?

I'm not the biggest fan of Drukqs either, but Chosen Lords represents some of RDJ's best work IMO (hence my username). I love The Tuss EPs too, so there's more than enough reason for me to anticipate new Aphex/AFX material.

DrukQs is a fantastic album and HIGHLY underrated in my opinion. To each their own I suppose. I wasn't very impressed with Chosen Lords when I first heard it, but that was a few years ago when I wasn't as into his music as I am now. A revisit is definitely in order.

back in 2005, i managed to get all 11 of the analord series in the span of one week, between time in boston and portland (maine). none of them specify what speed at which they play, and i wrongly assumed that they were all 45rpm when i first started listening to them. what a fool was i...

also, does anyone else think it's weird that, in the original druqks vinyl box set, 2 of the records are 33rpm and two are 45rpm? i guess it's par for the course for richard to fuck with people, though, so i shouldn't be surprised.

had no idea there was new recorded material in the works.

edit: i got into his stuff through NIN because of what he did on further down the spiral...so 1999 (when i started listening to NIN and, then aphex twin). i quite love the majority of his catalogue.

Apparently he a few albums ready to go but has been dealing with a divorce or something, he still plays loads and each set has a ton of new material some of it mindblowing, a lot of it sounds quite drum n bass-ey and rather ethereal. I like everyone else would love it in an official format though. Its been 8 years since Analord, which was great in parts but meandering in others.
But everything he did 92-96 was so out of this world. I like the compilation Classics the most . He truly was a gifted prodigy and so young. I can definitely hear the 1970s British childrens t.v influence too.

I just very recently discovered the track "Stone in Focus" that was cut from the CD version of SAW II. I didn't realize that the vinyl and the CD had different tracklistings. If they had to cut a song in order to make it all fit, why on earth was this the one that they chose? It's gotta be one of the coolest ambient songs he's ever done, tied with "Rhubarb."

It's a 20-year-old album that made it to the test-pressing stage; then the whole thing was called off. Only four people were known to own it, and a fifth one is the one that was given to the Discogs seller in '94 by Rephlex. Initially, the label gave the seller permission to sell it, but that's it. We Are The Music Makers (a dedicated electronic music forum) came up with the idea to begin a Kickstarter that will limit the amount of contributions to 600 at ~$16 per person. Once the target is met, Rephlex will give one-time duplication rights and a high-quality/lossless rip of the album will be produced. The record will then get put on eBay for bidding and once purchased, the proceeds will get divided as such: 1/3 to Richard/Rephlex, 1/3 to contributors (essentially, a refund/partial refund), and 1/3 to a selected charity. Once the record is sold, contributors will get their high-quality download. At this point, contributing the money is the only way to get the album, since Rephlex will not release it themselves. Some greedy collector could have purchased it and kept it for him/herself or distributed a shitty rip via the internet. This way, it's done right.

Basically, RDJ/Rephlex did not set up the sale, but gave permission to sell it and share it. The site admin thought it was only fair for the artist and label to get royalties. The tracks on the album have not been released, with the exception of a supposed two that have made their way out. The whole thing is nuts. I'm for sure going to contribute.

With a lot of artists, you could rightly make that assumption, but not with Aphex.

RDJ seriously seems to not give a fuck if people hear his music. I think he's gotten to a point where he just got sick of people "not getting it" and now he apparently just makes music for himself and (supposedly) shows it to his friends. There are rumors that he's just sitting on hours of mind-blowing music that will never see a release.

Also.... this is Aphex Twin. Even if it was the sloppiest thing he ever put together, it's still probably revolutionary.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do the dickstarter thing though. RDJ doesn't need crowd funding. I'm already happily giving him my money for the recent vinyl reissues.

This isn't the same thing as the anthology of Caustic Window EPs (which I have on CD); it's a full-length double LP recorded under that name. Mike Paradinas posted a track-by-track review of the whole thing ages ago on Joyrex.com, back when I kept up with that board regularly in 2002 or whenever. It sounded at the time like it was some pretty lush stuff. Only one or two tracks have surfaced as part of multi-artist compilations ("Phlaps" is one of them). I'm excited to hear it all at last!

The fact that it's charity changes the way I look at it entirely, but I'm not really making a hard-line moral stance. It's just bang-for-buck, and I like paying for physical versions of music.

That said, I think I've already bought most of the Rephlex catalog (digital included).

im loving this so far, especially the track Airflow, music here sort of sounds like a missing link between I Care Because You Do and Analogue Bubblebath 5.

This is the fist 'new' material i have heard by him in 8 years. other than some of the unidentified stuff he plays in his DJ sets.
The quieter more emotional ambient stuff shines the most and just highlights what made him so great.

I didnt know wether any of his unreleased material was going to be THIS good, he has so much unreleased stuff, hopefully more comes out soon.

Listening to the FLAC rip now! It's very cool, but I can see why it was cancelled. Not much new ground covered, very reminiscent of his early style (which, I find, is nevertheless quite enjoyable). Really? i hear music by him and cannot believe its 15-20 years old, i still think his material sounds stunning, He is still probably the most influential person of all time in the electronic music spectrum.
Electronic music dates fast, anything released before 2009, today sounds dated. Dubstep already sounds dated, its always evolving, Compared to most electronic music from the 90s his music still sounds like something else, stuff like the Richard D James Album, or tracks like Didgeridoo just becuase some of the equipment he used 20 years ago on Selected Ambeint Workings sound dated does not really effect its emotional impact to me, at all.

Out of curiosity, have you heard the "Alarm Will Sound" album where they perform Aphex Twin tracks using classical instrumentation?

Aphex Twin broke new ground, and wrote some fantastic music, but it was nestled amongst more forgettable - if still original - stuff.
In my mind, he was more impressive when I could only get the US releases on CD at Borders in the 90s, compared to being able to download every single thing he's ever released alongside a bunch of stuff he's never released. But I guess I could say something similar about the celebrated Radiohead music marking their dramatic change in focus. I've often thought that if you took the best songs of Kid A, Amnesiac and their B-sides and put them together, you'd have just about an album's worth of really good music.

Sounds similar to the show I saw... except the one I caught was with little people wearing american flag t-shirts and a clown wearing a venetian festival mask.

1999 or so?

Also, the music was brilliant.

Yeah, I saw a similar show at a similar time, with Sneaker Pimps opening. It was awesome to hear Come to Daddy before it was released, but as shows go - it was RDJ on a couch with a laptop and, maybe a mixer. Bears came out and danced, a guy in just a towel came out and danced, and then took his towel off. (Other people's) Electronic music performances have certainly come a long way since then. I'm not sure I could be arsed to see Aphex Twin live again.

Wasn't Drukqs just a supposed clearing house of tracks he had festering on his hard drive at the time? I think a lot of fans - hardcore and tepid alike - took that album as way more of a musical statement than it was intended to be.

I don't think the new album will be a continuation of the Drukqs sound. Or, at least, I hope it's not. He's got 13 years of electronic music to pull from since his last proper album, if you can even call Drukqs that. Anything short of a game-changer is going to be a disappointment, especially coming off the back of Drukqs.

I'll never understand why people think Drukqs is some sort of slapped-together collection of old tracks, it's cohesive as fuck!

Nothing against you or how you feel, I've just had friends say the same thing and I don't get it. But I'm one of the folks that deem the album to be brilliant.

How does the AFX stuff compare to his Aphex Twin albums? Specifically the compilation Chosen Lords?

The analord series is actually my favorite stuff of his. I queue up the entire series and let it play through probably once every month or two. All of the analord material is way more acid oriented than 90% of his Aphex Twin material. If you like chosen lords, I definitely recommend checking out the entire analord series and then checking out his material as 'The tuss'.

How does the AFX stuff compare to his Aphex Twin albums? Specifically the compilation Chosen Lords?

All of his albums are pretty different. There's stylistic similarities between the Selected Ambient Works albums... but they're very different from I Care Because You Do, which is more minimal and jarring than The Richard D James Album, and Drukqs is entirely different...

The Chosen Lords compilation is more dance driven acid house. I think it's great, and I don't really get what people dislike about it. Maybe people were expecting something more rhythmically intense and complex after Drukqs.

This song in particular is awesome

I've seen speculation that this track (http://youtu.be/A9Nk5tXzR6I) is XMAS_EVET10, based on BPM & track length information. The BPM of the track at 7:44 on this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyzyBZh5Zto&t=7m44s) matches the BPM for track 10, PAPAT4. Warp apparently confirmed the Manchester track (http://youtu.be/HNDumOgAT54) as Minipops 67... but I don't know where that confirmation was posted.

The new track is amazing. Never expected him to actually be interested in retaining the more tangible elements of his music, but this song displays just that in crystalline form.

I also love how earnest the dude's been with the rollout of the new album; various formats and packages to purchase the album, listening events, frank interviews, and the release date not being too far from when this thing was actually announced. Considering this is the first proper Aphex album in 13 years, it's super fucking relieving he didn't go the same route Daft Punk and Arcade Fire did last year (whose hype campaigns were nerve-grating as all hell).

I gave it a full listen this morning and I have to say it's honestly probably one of his best pieces of work. Much more hard hitting and noisy than I was expecting but still full of rhythm and melody. 180db_ and CIRCLONTA6A are incredible, incredible tracks.

It's crazy to think that some of this may have been written 10 years ago and feels extremely of the time. Not that Aphex Twin's stuff ever felt dated, but it feel like it's got it's pulse and the current wave of what's happening in electronic music. Hard to explain.

I was wondering if anything was going to be able to knock Sun Kil Moon's "Benji" from my top spot of favorite albums this year and after a couple more listens, "Syro" just might do it.

It's not going to blow my mind the way Aphex Twin blew my mind in the late 90s, but it is actually making me think more about the electronic music I tinker with. This album is super delicious. It's really bouncy! There's a lot of variety and really solid songwriting all over the whole thing. Hell, the first half of "Syro" (er, track 9—I'm not typing that whole title) sounds like it could be used in a Sonic the Hedgehog game. Good headphones make for one hell of a treat.

If I have anything to nitpick so far, it's actually the album's immediacy. I love its catchiness and how the tracks really stick, but it's a double-edged sword. I want to listen to this on repeat forever and I fear I'll get sick of it sooner than I'd like. :)

I love it. Listened three times, and it really grows on you too. Some of the samey-sounding synth pads actually give the full thing some cohesion, rather than being redundant (which is what I was worried would happen with repeated listens). I'm going to hold off on listening more until my vinyl shows up... hopefully in three days?

Almost certainly my pick for album of the year so far

All I can say is that I hope Aphex Twin releases albums more often. This brings me back in a good way. At the same time it's no period piece. This is pushing things forward. Almost immediately liked it. I love how much attention to detail is paid to each song. Things are constantly morphing and warping... there is structure but the songs seem to progress organically... or evolve... I'd love for 180db to be played at some top 40 club hits dance club.

I have the Blue Jam soundtrack CD, with a couple of tracks from Selected Ambient Works Vol. II used as background music for two of the sketches. Are there other RDJ contributions to that horrible comedy genius' output which I should know about?

Sutekh
11-08-2014, 07:16 AM
Off the top of my head, in brass eye there's a sort of hip hop montage of an abduction in the paedogeddon special which is blatant AT soundtracked, there's a bit where they force children to listen to "extremely modern music" and it's this horrible noise, there's also a bit where they're doing those interviews of stupid celebrities and they play something on a boombox and ask them what they think of it, all of it has the AT sound about it, I got the impression that RDJ is Morris' go-to guy for bits of music

Ok that was ridiculously vague... I think I might watch brass eye again and take some detailed notes! PS have a look at the TV series of Jam/Blue Jam if you haven't already, the 2nd episode is one of the most perfect things I've ever seen. It's more or less just blue jam set to visuals

Also now I think about it, I don't think anyone is credited for the few small cues in Four Lions (mashups of that Acid Brass LP and Middle Eastern music IIRC), and Warp records made that film, so who knows

edit - about 6:19, very short cue with what sounds like a cornish/west-country accent (they sound like pirates, basically) shouting FAKKK ARRRFFF. my gut feeling is it's RDJ, might not be though, but like I say the impression I get is that little cues here and there would be done by him

Out of tune? Unless your turntable is broken nothing would be out of tune. I interpret that to mean one side of the EP plays at 33.33 RPM and the other at 45.

seasonsinthesky

yeah, it definitely says "33 or 45" meaning it's a "variable speed" record. which to me is kind of bullshit, as a vinyl enthusiast. if it's not mastered at the speed at which you're playing it back, it's not going to sound right. and as a sound engineer/musician, it also pisses me off, because it's basically him saying "i don't care what this sounds like when you listen to it".

I do not feel so strongly, and I think it's a fun way to say "fuck it, and you" to vinyl purists, while at the same time giving us something to dork out about.

I haven't heard the music, so I don't know how it sounds at different speeds. But I have some old horror movie soundtracks that sound great when played at the wrong speed.

As a vinyl enthusiast this should be the most fun way to be handed an album. You actually get to check out both versions of the playback. It's fun. He's having fun.... and you, as a vinyl enthusiast, are the only one equipped to enjoy the joke.

same, but i guess i interpreted it the opposite way: he probably does care how it sounds, so either he tried it at the wrong speed and thought it was cool, or – more likely – he wants it used as much as possible in remixes and DJ sets and whatnot, so this is a way of emphasizing its sampling use.

in all likelihood, he's probably just taking the piss. and that's just RDJ, so...
