Chino Moreno's newest side project!
Holy fuck!

Total eargasm. I think my ovaries may have also exploded.
Free download of the EP & Tour info at their website (http://www.crossesmusic.com/).

I think that I read somewhere that they had considered putting it out, but they want to wait until Chi is at least fully awake before releasing it. But I do agree with everyone that releasing it with proceeds going to Chi would be great. Maybe even put it in a nice Deluxe set with a better charge, so that Chi's family gets more money.

FWIW, here's my review of the first EP: http://ourvinyl.com/†††-crosses-†-ep/

It may sound completely insane to some, but if Deftones were to break up tomorrow and this became Chino's main focus, I'd be a little upset, but completely happy with a focus on this. It's *that* good to me...and this comes from an old school Deftones fan...

Unknown Song with Annie Hardy (Sp?)
Trophy

I'm fairly sure this is accurate and in order. Considering this was their first live presentation and allowing for sound issues in a so so venue this was a great show. The crowd was very enthusiastic and I think there were more people recording than usual because it was a premiere. Watching two drummers play facing each other was unique and significantly impacted the feel of the tracks. I was pleasantly surprised they played Cross, it sounded great live. The Annie song was almost comedic as Chino was trying very hard to hit those high notes, smiling and giggling throughout the song.

The Amateur Chemist was in attendance and I'm sure he'll post an OC Weekly review shortly, with high quality pics.

Rip off package? I thought that was worth it for everything you got as far as I seen it. The vinyl, shirt, scarf and flash drive alone was a good deal to me. I don't have a magical $100.00 laying around to buy it though.

I can tell ya now that a 10" record, t-shirt, scarf and flash drive (plus keychains and stickers) don't add up to $100. Even the box it comes in is basically one that would be used to gift sweaters or something. Nothing against the band or anything but $100 for all that isn't that great. Especially when they didn't give an option to buy anything on it's own.

Found out the record is $15 at shows btw.

S/T is my second favorite album of theres. I absolutely do not understand why everyone hates that album so much. At all. Yet somehow there is a massive chunk of the Deftones fan base that hates that cd. It blows my mind. Definitely the darkest and heaviest (in both meanings) stuff they've ever done.

Wretchedest
04-04-2012, 01:01 AM
I've seen the hate for it die out over the years as it grows on people. In fact I've seen a lot more love for it in the time surrounding the Release of Diamond eyes. You have to love that unique sound, there really is no other album that sounds like S/T. It's one of those rare moments when an artist really starts to understand what their music is about. And then in SNW abes drumming and the band's rhythms become so much more sophisticated with tracks like Ratsratsrats and Rapture. They went from being a band that just really rocked to a band with some serious technical talent.

I'm optimistic but worried for the next album. The last three have all started off really easy for them and then derailed by something really awful, and wound up taking longer than expected. Here's hoping LP7/8/9 (depending on how you look at it) is smooth sailing for them.

richardp
04-04-2012, 04:16 PM
I don't know, dude. I feel like they've taken the Chi situation and made the most positive they could with it. I don't think anyone in the band is on bad terms at all, and Diamond Eyes felt and sounded like it was made effortlessly, so I bet the next one will be the same way. I have tons of faith that it will be great. The band as a whole seems to be in a really great place right now, and I cannot be more excited about that.

Those are the two songs that feel "immature" to me. Maybe it's the choruses that really come across as cheesy. They just never sat well with me...now I realize what were the songs that put me off from this project.

Ep 1 is a more unique, complex album, and EP 2 seems kind of poppy and mindless to me.

"mindless" lol

I don't know how that comparison fits from what I hear. I think they're both about equally spiced. Maybe the vibe in EP 2 is less varied, but musically they're dispersed almost evenly with change-up. For a while there I would forget which was which when it came to both of the EP closers...both songs fall into the same general song category. I couldn't help but notice that. It's all actually a bit uncanny to me...like all the songs could've easily been on one LP. Maybe too easily. But I'm pretty sure the songs were all written and recorded in the same time period.

He's been really productive the past couple of years, hasn't he? I remember an interview where he says that making music is his hobby instead of playing video games or something. The remarkable thing about his voice is that it fits well with all these different types of music-heavier Deftones, melodic Palms, and electronic Crosses. I think he tweeted something about Team Sleep started up again as well.

And then mentioned a full length following it. But I couldn't tell if he was saying that they were just going to package all three EPs onto one disc and throw some bonus tracks on it or if they were actually putting out a new full album. But either way, EP 3 comes in October!

Now that's great frigging news
I'm always playing the first two EPs.
Maybe the full release will be a combination of the best of the three EPs along with new tracks.
I guess this will be an opportunity for a physical CD release since the EPs were only digital and special edition vinyl correct?
Hell, I would pay just to have all three of the EPs on one disc.

Amazon is listing both EPs for release on vinyl the same day that ††† comes out. It also comes out a day shy of KNY's one year anniversary.

This has been a monster-prolific year for Chino. He's found time to release new albums with Deftones, Palms and Crosses, in addition to touring the globe for KNY.

Trent-level prolificity. I'm totally digging it.

Once he gets Team Sleep going again, it will be 4 :D Cannot wait for new TS material. I've tracked down literally every track they put out; I never thought I would see the day that I had over 60 TS songs.

Theres a ton of TS material out there and the s/t is wierdly just the tip of the ice berg. I still hope to hear more from them though.

Yeaa, that lo-fi sound they have is really moody, dark, and eerie which is what Team Sleep is all about. The S/T I get lost in every time I listen to it but it's been a while so maybe tonight I might have a pre-longed TS sesh. Chino said TS is VERY much alive so once all this material he is putting out now subsides, I think that is when he will give more attention to the TS project.. cannot wait.

So funny reading those comments and Deftones fans ignorance of Witch House. I don't even listen to any of that stuff and I've heard of Ritualz.

I don't know about one being an instrumental - none of the titles sound like instrumental titles to me (1994, blk stallion, death bell).

The white version of the vinyl release is delayed to the end of the month. Crosses sent out emails giving three options for people (like me) who'd ordered the white vinyl:

1. Cancel and get a refund
2. Get a free copy of the CD to be shipped out immediately while you wait
3. Get the "charcoal" colored version instead

Also, they sent out a free digital download of the album, as if it's not already all over the Internet. These are much nicer gestures than when the Dragon Tattoo box was delayed sixteen times, at least.

That's kinda how I feel. I would've much rather had either a third EP, or a full album with much more new material on it. Having a full-length with 10 songs I've already played to death makes it feel less like an album and more like a compilation of the band's catalog.

Are the new songs going to be released on vinyl in EP form, like the other 10 songs? If so, I may try to get the EPs first, since I imagine those will be harder to find as time goes on...I can always order the full album from the site later.

I got over the disappointment of it not being a full-length album of new material back when the tracklist was announced. The Epilogue is a great track, and so are 1994 and Death Bell.

The album does kind of feel like it drags along, though. They probably should've just done a third EP, because this feels like "here's everything we've got, bye" to me.

I gave it a more thorough listen, as an ep btw, i wrote this thing off as a full album on sight for some reason, and I think its just the bees knees! Grade A Chino!

Nineteen Ninety Four is like that perfect sweetspot between Palms and Team Sleep, that reverby trip hop ppst something feel. Just dig ep 3 in general, their best so far.

The album does kind of feel like it drags along, though. They probably should've just done a third EP, because this feels like "here's everything we've got, bye" to me.

This. I could have done without the pre-existing tracks, it simply didn't gel to me as a full album. The sequencing was just... odd. The new tracks are amazing. The one old track they should have added somewhere is "The Years". It's an excellent track.

I am enjoying this immensely. I was a fan of both EP's, but really just played them each a handful of times. Hearing them all in an album format has made it feel fresh to me, but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that it's been at least a year and a half or so since I've really listened to anything from this project. Bitches Brew is fucking fantastic. I love Chino.

I personally feel like, even though EPs 1 and 2 are now pretty dated, hearing them both together with added material as one whole item works a lot better than the two EPs. Granted this is probably my least favorite of Chino's many projects, but this album still sounds great front to back. Would really love a full length tour for it, but I have a feeling that won't happen, similar to the Palms project.

Even though the tracks are outdated, I find them to hold a lot of replay value. The album as a whole really works for me since it pretty much is a mellow/chill/vibey album as it is. Sitting back and smoking a blunt or whatever is your preference to this album, or just enjoying it and kicking back is the type of music this is to me. I guess for me, it reminds me a lot of Team Sleep (Which is my favorite side project of Chino) so that's why I was able to dive right in.

The Epilogue, Blk Stallion, Death Bell, and Thholyghst.

To those who think the album drags on with the inclusion of old tracks, here's a fun game:

If you could trim it down to 10-12 tracks, what would they be, and in what sequence! Maybe we can find some cool new ways to listen to it.

I'll throw in my $0.02 as soon as I hear the whole album...

Honestly, the instrumentals don't work super well here for me. I liked how they closed the EP's, but it kinda slows down the album a bit too much in my opinion. I'd just take those three tracks out and leave it as is... though I guess I would also be up for bringing Option further up in the track list. It just seems like an early album song to me.

Maybe I'm just not into Chino that much lately, but I also feel this whole sound of theirs worked better in shorter doses, as it was in the EPs.

That said, I do at least like the majority of the album. By my standards, I will apparently be buying this thing.

Interesting. I was looking up the album track listing on wikipedia (haven't gotten around to getting the album yet, probably this weekend) and noticed the pattern of the tracks. Nothing special, but it was clearly intentional, or just a really weird coincidence.

1.
"This Is a Trick"
EP 1

2.
"Telepathy"
EP 2

3.
"Bitches Brew"

4.
"Thholyghst"
EP 1

5.
"Trophy"
EP 2

6.
"The Epilogue"

7.
"Bermuda Locket"
EP 1

8.
"Frontiers"
EP 2

9.
"Nineteen Ninety Four"

10.
"Option"
EP 1

11.
"Nineteen Eighty Seven"
EP 2

12.
"Blk Stallion"

13.
"Cross"
EP 1

14.
"Prurient"
EP 2

15.
"Death Bell"

At least the tracks aren't in the same order they are on each EP.

UGH. The guy in that review is a prick. Instead of the typical over-blown hyperbole filled writing they get what sounds like a disgruntled old school Deftones fan to rant about it. I mean the guy even takes a moment to take a jab at Reznor's lyrics and incorrectly Gahan since Gore writes the lyrics. He sounds like some dude-bro that hates electronic mixing with his rock and the type that looks down on goth kids and other niche groups.

Personally I love the instrumentation AND Chino's vocal delivery on all of the Crosses material.

Pitchfork were the ones who hosted a stream of the album in advance! And just like with HTDA, they turn around and trash it afterwards. I know to praise anything they stream would be bias, but I dunno, get somebody who's not going to shit on it completely...it's like streaming something on Pitchfork is a deal with the devil. Gain exposure to a wide audience, but suffer at the hands of Pitchfork's asshole reviewers.

Technically if anyone at Pitchfork is qualified to write about Crosses its Ian Cohen because he often still tweets about Deftones and how he's a fan. And if you actually read the entire review, at the end he basically states that even though he feels it's an embarrassing misstep for Chino, he can't fault the guy because he's just "that friend who get's overly excited about something" and admires that Chino doesn't want his Deftones fame making Crosses more successful. Ian Cohen is hands down Pitchfork's best writer. I personally think that album deserves much higher than a 5.0 but just because he's a Deftones fan, doesn't mean he is required to like everything that Chino does. And just because Pitchfork streams an album doesn't mean they are required to BNM it, either.

Saw the band at Santos Party House in NYC tonight, and it was pretty great!

Got the live debut of "Blk Stallion" which was a highlight, but I think my favorite of the evening was "Telepathy" - sounded exceptional live. "Option" was great, too, and is probably my favorite Crosses song still.

Don't know if this has become a regular thing, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear "Goodbye Horses" during the encore! Leave it to Chino...

you know, i wondered for a while about that, but i'm pretty sure he does it very intentionally. even on studio recordings, his vocals almost always have that filtered quality that you get from cupping the mic, so i think that's just how he wants his voice to sound.

Pitchfork pisses me off almost all the time, but his review was fair as hell. No reason to talk shit on it. blah... him being a huge Deftones fan is probably why it's such a shitty review. His bias is blinding him.. stop comparing it to Deftones, it's not supposed to be Deftones, it's supposed to be Crosses. I also can't stand when reviewers take lyrics out of the context and structure of the music it's accompanying "The first line on “†his is a †rick” is “something’s changed in your face I notice/ a different sparkle in those crazy eyes,” and from that moment going forward, Moreno’s guyliner’d leering just puts you on the defensive".. Ian's "guyliner" reference, "stadium-status electro-rock shit" reference to NIN and overall bashing of things that aren't relevant to this album rub me the wrong way. Fair review, I think not.

Just because he's a Deftones fan it doesn't make him the right person to review it. In this instance it gives him a bias against it, comparing to a completely different project. Comparisons are bound to happen, but that doesn't mean I think they're fair.

In the grand scheme of things I don't. But this is a discussion board. Someone mentioned the review and I gave my opinion just like you gave yours. We're discussing. I'm just not a fan of being taken to task because I stated my opinion about the review. If we weren't interested in discussion of art and art critique, specifically about music, we wouldn't be here in the first place. So let's just discuss.

My grey marbled vinyl came in and it looks great. I ordered from the record label and got a poster too, did anyone who bought it in a store get a poster? It's just a standard medium sized poster with the album art on it, but still a pretty nifty bonus I wasn't expecting.

But watching those JKL clips, Chino is back to his bloated SNW days, weight-wise. Seriously, you can't tell where his neck ends and his head begins. It's no wonder he unbuttoned the top of his shirt for Bitches Brew, unless it burst when he was moving around..

I just saw them at Santos Party House on Wednesday and it was GREAT. They played pretty much the whole record and a cover of "Goodbye Horses". They sounded tight as hell. Their drummer and bassist in particular were frickin amazing!

And, no, Chino is nowhere near his SNW weight. (not that it matters) He looked great, seemed genuinely happy, and I don't think I've ever heard his voice sound so spot on. (seen Deftones a dozen times since 1995 and Team Sleep twice)

The show Thursday night in Brooklyn was everything I was expecting! It was a treat to see Color Film live and hear some new and more upbeat songs from them. Of course you get the trolls shouting "GLASSJAW".. man is that annoying.. but overall the crowd was great. I was surprised on how heavy "The Years" sounded live compared to the studio version. Chino sounded on point and was having a lot of fun on stage; he seemed very stoked on the reaction of the crowd. Really hope we get another album from these guys.

If YOU like the album, what do you care what Ian Cohen or anyone else at Pitchfork thinks of it?

It matters because, as a reviewer, you still need to treat the material you are reviewing with some mild bit of respect even if you ultimately give it a negative review. This review came off as very condescending and insulting to the band. And while I'm not too terribly enthused by this band to be honest, they don't deserve that kind of treatment.

Lol

Just stating the obvious. Remember that time Deftones promoted SNW on Letterman or one of those late night shows and they sang 'Hole In The Earth', and it sounded like Chino's vocal cords were being strangled by his neck fat? I got flashbacks of that during certain parts of the JKL 'Bitches Brew' performance

Well, most performances on Kimmel sound like shit anyway. I just saw them in Brooklyn and Chino was spot on with this vocals, not to mention doing an amazing job with "The Years", which was ten times heavier with the live version they did and his screaming vocals were a treat to hear. Everyone has their off days, but the 2 times I have seen Deftones and now Crosses... I have never been disappointed.

I agree, to an extent. I saw Deftones three times in the span of a month just before KNY was released and Chino killed it each night.

He was also nowhere near as hefty during those shows as he is now. I'm not slamming him on his weight because he can really do no wrong in my eyes, but he sounds noticeably gassed in those JKL clips, just like he did in the SNW days when he was heavier. I'm glad to hear the Brooklyn show was good because I'm planning to see them very soon.

I hear ya. After watching the video again, I notice what you're saying now. Luckily whatever band I have heard him in live has been good so far! The last couple of clips I have seen of him playing in Crosses, he seems to be very excited and lively which is a good thing.

Finally got a chance to listen to the record. I had actually put off listening to any of the new stuff prior to this, so hearing The Epilogue and Bitches Brew for the first time made it a cool experiece. I quite enjoyed the first EP, wasn't a huge fan of the 2nd, but was hoping this would bring it home. Thankfully it did, very much in the way I felt about Welcome Oblivion from HTDA. actually. Thought their first EP showed some promise and potential, the second release was a bit of step back, but once everything came together in the end it ultimately blew me away.

I never had any of the prior stuff on heavy repeat anyway, and I had taken a long break from it as well, so even the stuff I knew felt relatively fresh and I wasn't attached to the prior tracklists like some might have been. Overall I thought as an album it gave a much better picture of the nature of the band, and was sequenced extremely well. I loved the vibe here from start to finish. It was a ton of fun and one of the more romantic of his works to be honest. I saw it as this kind of 80's gothic valentine. To that reviewer who said Chino embarrassed himself, well if his definition of that is exposing yourself emotionally, then ok if that's not what your looking for but I definitely found it to be a pleasant surprise. Chino's work in all his bands has always been extremely raw emotionally, but I felt there was a softer side shown here that he hasn't fully explored before. It was a risk and one that will surely piss off some his hardcore metal fans, but pretty sure he's never given a fuck about that image to start with.

After listening this record, I will say I enjoyed it more than Team Sleep, and while not as instrumentally proficient as Palms, it had more heart, which makes this my favorite Chino side project to date (though I've liked them all in their own way).

Here's hoping one of the 7 dates teaser posted on their site over the weekend includes some east coast cities.

Saw them last night in San Antonio and had a blast. Chino was in a great mood with an ear-to-ear grin the entire time. All the songs sound great live. If you even marginally like them, I recommend seeing them live if they come near your town.

I saw them in Seattle last night. Their drummer is RIPPED! I could count different muscles in his arms while he was DESTROYING the drum kit at the end of The Years, awesome screaming by Chino in that song. Chuck Doom is also one groovy fucker, I didn't expect him to be so lively. Going back to the drummer: it was so much fun watching him perform. I definitely don't know anything about drumming, but his patterns looked weird, the way he hit the drums, nothing conventional...it reminded me of Josh Freese. I wish they had played Death Bell...I don't know why they didn't perform it, I was kinda expecting them to close with this song. Nonetheless, The Years was a good way to finish their concert. Their merch was not that exciting and didn't get anything. I wanted to buy a tshirt, but black tees don't do anything for me these days.

About the opener, JMSN, I was really impressed! Does anyone know more about them? The singer kinda looked like Jesus Christ (and his clothes kinda helped this image) and he sang amazing! Great voice, the guy could definitely sing. The bass player and drummer were so into it, very energetic performance and amazing ending. Came back home and checked their Wikipedia page, according to it, it's an R&B band. When their set finished last night I thought to myself: "This is how pop music should sound like!". Bought their Priscilla album when their set was over and ran into the signer, I shook his hand, great dude. I could tell he was still in another dimension/pumped up from his performance. Another newb question: JMSN has an EP and an LP out, and both titles have crosses signs on both ends of the title (†Priscilla† (https://www.google.com/search?espv=210&es_sm=93&q=jmsn+%E2%80%A0priscilla%E2%80%A0&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAGOovnz8BQMDgzEHnxCXfq6-QbplVVJxlRKYXWGal2NcqSWenWyln1tanJmsn1hUkllcYpWYk1 SaW8x4n8mP29xoU5-6l3uAwLUyvaU7SgATLE88UAAAAA&sa=X&ei=m90-U8-OHerWyQH8j4HIAQ&ved=0CKIBEJsTKAIwFA) & †Pllajλ† (https://www.google.com/search?espv=210&es_sm=93&q=jmsn+%E2%80%A0pllaj%C3%AB%E2%80%A0&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAGOovnz8BQMDgzEHnxCXfq6-QbplVVJxlRKYXWViaVxgqiWenWyln1tanJmsn1hUkllcYpWYk1 SaW2zS0nVWvfvo5DvRcr-W7Ww84ryK8QsAoYU3QVAAAAA&sa=X&ei=m90-U8-OHerWyQH8j4HIAQ&ved=0CKMBEJsTKAMwFA)), does any of you know why is this? What's with the crosses (with JMSN and with Crosses)? I remember reading in this board that the symbol is associated with the witch house movement and well, at that point I felt like Homer Simpson in the Hulabalooza episode, what the hell is a witch house? After further reading I learned that neither do Crosses nor JMSN are part of the witch house genre. Kids these days...Will post pictures of the show later.
