So, some of you may recall the car I WAS driving until lately, an awesome 1987 Audi 5000S, custom exhaust and rims, lowered, tinted windows, lovely burgundy paint job. It was called Dangerhawk, and Dangerhawk fucked my ass every chance it got. Well, finally it went too far. My transmission blew, so now it only goes backwards- which is not an asset in a vehicle, unless it's an Italian tank in WWII. So now I'm driving the polar opposite of a cool car: http://carsinlondon.com/photos/000_0025.jpg It's a 2001 Dodge Caravan. The sound system is decent, and it goes forwards, so that's really all I care about. Oh, and it can hold a lot of my work gear in the back. I named it Thunderhorse.
WHAT'S EVERYONE ELSE ROLLIN' IN THESE DAYS?

Hey, nothing wrong with a Caravan! It's a comfy ride, spacious, and you'll always be in demand for friends who need to move from apartments!

I just got a Lincoln MKZ hybrid. I love it. Not terribly sexay, but it's comfortable, has a great sound system, and gets fantastic gas milage (about 38 MPG so far).

Gotta post a picture. Best car I've ever had.

If a car was so hot that I had to park it and get out of it, I think I would rather jump out before even having the chance to take the keys out.
To keep more on subject, I ride the bus with fellow citizens. If you have your own car, you don't have the chance of getting hit on daily by minority races; take that into consideration while you ride in comfort.

Just recently got my first car, a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta GLI... Kind of a steal, but work is needing put in still (some cosmetic and some functional). Since it's not a junker, I've already mapped out all I want to do to it down the road, inside and out. I'm pretty excited.

I'm actually trying to make it appear less sporty.

We'll see how well I pull that off in the end.

my auto I have had for almost a year now after the untimely demise of my little Saturn. Besides a continuing water leak issue and the fact that I need to replace the brakes on all 4 tires I love it. Very fun to drive and I feel safer knowing that its bode isnt made out of plastic like most cars these days.

I've got a 2007 Dodge Magnum SXT w/ a 3.5l V6, the first time I've ever owned a car that other people randomly tell me is cool. I also own a 2001 Hyundai Elantra, which is by definition the opposite of cool, but I bought it new and have put over 150,000 miles on it, and it's been very good to me. I'll probably post pics later. In fact it was membership on car forums related to both of these vehicles that influenced me towards picking vBulletin for the new ETS. (Of note: Charlie Clouser's on the Magnum-related forum I'm on, cuz he's got a Magnum SRT, among a couple other badass cars)

I currently drive a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 :) I've had her for about a year and she's a blast. I was missing the hatchback and had to pick her up when I saw her at my local Mazda dealer. This photo was taken right after I installed a set of coil overs and rattle canned a set of mazdaspeed6 wheels :)

Mini>>>Hyundai. Congrats!

(Still think Ford > Dodge, though!)

Ford really put together some good cars over these past few years, but generally speaking I avoid domestic vehicles because they are dumb. The ergonomics are dumb, the warranties all sucked, the styling was terrible. I don't really understand why anyone would buy Chevrolet or Cadillac or Buick. I do like the outside styling of the sportier Dodge vehicles, but the interior of my Magnum is pretty dull, as interiors go. The new Charger has a nicer cockpit, but I was admittedly disappointed that the inside of my car wasn't nearly as cool as the outside - although the seats are friggin' great.

As to whether MINI >> Hyundai, we'll see. You know what I liked about my Elantra? I bought it in 2001 for $13,000 and only let it go in 2011 with 155,000 miles because we weren't really using it. The warranty was great, and even better perhaps was that I didn't need to use it. Replacement parts were cheap (I swapped out 80% of my suspension at 100,000 miles for $200 in parts from someone who had upgraded their car, and upgraded a few suspension bits to Tiburon GT parts on the cheap), the entire shop manual is posted online for free, maintenance was easy. But it was showing it's age (No robo-car functions like traction control), and Mel wanted an automatic for driving in the city. If I had the choice between buying a brand new MINI and a brand new Hyundai Veloster, truth be told I'd probably put money down for the Veloster, given the reliability and low maintenance costs.

The MINI we got has the supercharger and a 6-speed auto transmission (again, for driving in Philly)

I don't know that I have a dream car really. I thought the Magnum looked cool when it came out in 2005, and now I own one. The MINI was a curiosity, but Mel wanted on when she moved to the US ("All the cars here are huge!"), and now we own one of those. Both can go fast if we need them to. One can haul a bunch of stuff, the other can fit in tight spots and sips gas. If the MINI lasts another 100,000 miles without too many serious repair bills, I'll be happy with it.

Funny thing about both of these cars -- in Philadelphia, they're everywhere. On my street alone, there are four Magnums. The MINIs tend to be in more hipstery neighborhoods, but they're still everywhere. But when we drive west to my parent's place, it's not even 100 miles away, and we're deep in SUV territory. The Magnum becomes a very unusual vehicle to see on the road. I feel like it's a very good car, but I can see why it was canceled after 2008. Chrysler was basically betting on the Magnum as an alternative to the SUV crowd, but suburbanites never took to it.

We got an SXT with the "comfort package" IIRC. Power adjustable leather heated seats, power adjustable pedals (which is great for my half-Chinese Mormolyke), sunroof. For sure, SRT8s with the 6.1l Hemi will be eye catching rare beasts in the future, but not so much that people should buy them as an investment. Ours is a nice touring vehicle that has ample power for us (they came with the base option of a 2.7l v6 which apparently sucks balls) and gets surprisingly decent mileage for being a huge vehicle with 250hp. The only mods I've done to it are to add a catch can, and I'll be throwing on the police-trim rear sway bar when things warm back up.

That Beetle is amazing, haha. More backstory please

Really like the looks of the Veloster. I currently have a 2006 Honda Civic. It's still in great shape with 60k+ miles and have only really had oil changes performed and changed the brake pads finally not too long ago. If I wasn't still paying off a small personal loan (car is paid off) and wasn't toying with the idea of finishing my basement, I think I may check out the Veloster. Still may see if I can test drive one at some point.

Dodge/Chrysler is headed in an interesting direction with the Fiat takeover, you'll see some very interesting stuff start appearing here with a Dodge label -- for example, the new Dodge Dart is an Alfa Romeo under the skin. I considered a Magnum wagon years back when shopping for a vehicle for the wife but ended up with a new 06 Subaru Legacy which has been absolutely bullet-proof so far. She's got 56k on it and is not interested in trading it. I just put a Parrot bluetooth/ipod thing in that car - can't say I enjoyed that... works great though.

Agreed that Ford is the most solid US automaker at this point. Top Gear tells me that Ford is looked at with huge respect in the UK... probably moreso than in the US.

One maker that pisses me off badly is Honda/Acura. I don't like where they are or their bizarre design directions. I drove Hondas for a long time -- two Accords, a CRX, a Prelude and an Acura RSX -- and that last one was just an uncomfortable, disappointing car. I've cast a look in their direction occasionally but usually end up nauseous (Ridgeline, TL) or underwhelmed (TSX, CR-Z). I do kinda like the TSX wagon - aka the Euro Accord tourer -- might consider that if in that market.

At present I drive this - 08, 3.2 V6 Quattro, 6-spd manual. Traded the 350Z last January after four years of being unable to drive in snow. Or rain for that matter. This thing gnaws through snow like a rally car.

darktemplar: you should try to turn those graphics into a Human Centipede theme somehow

edit: yeah, that's 3.2 L. No idea where my "2.8" number came from. Also: yes, we haven't had any snow here this winter (until today!) but last winter it was awesome. Dry/wet handling is pretty spectacular also, especially compared to a RWD car favored by the drifting crowd.

It's essentially a different company. Ford Europe is run from Germany and until the new 'world' Focus, it fielded an entirely different lineup. Ford has a particularly strong reputation in England though, as they've produced a range of affordable but excellent sporty hatches for a very long time.

On topic, I really need to take some pictures of my shiny new X-Type, before the inevitable pranging begins.

You can thank Mazda engineering for this. During the Mazda/Ford years it was clear that Ford was getting all the help it needed (platform wise) to start making decent cars again.

I have heard that before but I have seen 3 different size diesel pumps. There are the massive ones at truck stops, the midsize that are typically at the pumps that are on "islands" and the smaller size that tend to be on the pumps that include both diesel and regular gas. I have never tried it so I am not sure but supposedly there are restrictors which will prevent you from inserting a diesel pump into a gas car so hopefully that is true.

I can't tell you how many times people would rush over and try to stop me from putting diesel in my car thinking I was making a mistake so if by chance it does happen hopefully one of those good samaritans will come to my aid. ;)

Hey Levi, check this guy out!

When shopping for Melissa's car, we basically narrowed it down to a used Mini Cooper, a new Veloster, and she was curious about the new Prius C, based on the concept (although I assumed the production car wouldn't look anything like the concept, and that turned out to be the case). Since her primary concern is fuel economy, I don't think she'd be interested in a turbocharged Veloster. I'm not a big fan of the big-mouth grilles on the hybrid Sonata or this new Veloster though, aesthetically speaking.

Having said that, we got the Cooper S because, well, it was there and it was sharp. That turned out to be a lucky break all around, given that she wanted an automatic transmission (city driving). Apparently the standard auto tranny on Minis is a really horrible failure-prone CVT - which costs > $5k to replace - but the 06 Cooper S has a much more reliable 6-speed Aisin auto. And, bonus, apparently the 2006 is considered the best year of Mini Cooper to buy. While I find the reviews overly gushing ("MOST FUN CAR EVER") it certainly seems like a slick car so far.

It's slow off the line, but zips along once the RPMs start to get up there. I'm used to the feel and sound of the Magnum, so when I'm in the Mini, I feel like I've still got a ways to go before getting up to speed, but I look down and I'm already doing 90 :| The auto has a sport mode that changes the shift points & enable the paddle shifters. I believe that with the right tools, you can change the redline on the car, and the tach reflects that change. *shrug*

I got it from my stepfather since he had no use for it. He got it from a guy he knew that did all the custom work on it, mainly as a way to promote his sports bar he owns. Ended up not using it much because he needed his pickup truck far more for work. It sat and did nothing for over a year, and so he gave it to me if I could come up with the repair money. It's had plenty of issues but it's fun as hell to drive. I get people at stores asking if they can take a picture, people giving my thumbs up driving it, I even had a guy get out of his car at a red light and take a picture (I thought I was gonna get robbed). I'm surprised I haven't caused an accident yet. People know my car before they know me, if I meet someone I ask if they have seen the Baseball as an ice breaker.

The interior is all leather and set up to look like baseball gloves (the seats) and the steering wheel is a baseball cover, the stick shift is a baseball, and the emergency brake is a Cracker Jack baseball bat. I'll post some pics of the inside next time I'm out. It's hilarious.

Not sure what your price range is, how much you drive, etc - but best advice I can give you is to go to a dealer of your marque of choice and look for a three year old car that's just come off a three-year lease. You'll know it's been maintained, previous owner probably took great care to avoid getting nailed with check-out charges at the end of the lease, and the dealership may give you the rest of the new-car warranty (ie 5-yr when new, you get the 2-yr left on the 3-yr old car) Huge savings for a car that's probably still got tons of life left.

When you say you want a hot hatch does that mean you want one that looks good or one that's fast?

In other news, I finally managed to clean the speed3 last week and man does she look good :)

Just wanted to clarify :)

Now, here is what I would recommend:

VW GTi / R32
Comes with a Turbocharged 4cyl or non-turbo VR6 engine a friend of mine had a limited edition 2002 GTi that was turbo'd and it was auto, but they also come with a six speed manual tranny. The R32 comes with a twin turbo 1.4L i4 engine with the 2007 body style

2002 model

2007 model - was never a real fan of this version since I feel it looks really dumb'd down and non-aggressive

2010 model - the brought the aggression back :)

turbocharged I5 engine - these things are a blast, but a pain in the ass to work on much like the GTi / R32

Subaru WRX STi
Its a five door, but these things are crazy fast. If I didnt own the MS3, I would have one of these.....in white......
305HP from a tuned turbocharged 4cyl engine

Another 5dr but these are a cheaper alternative to the STi and still manage to put down 263HP out of a turbocharged 4cyl DISI engine. These are highly tuneable and can hit the mid 300's with bolt ons.

Subaru was my first choice when I went looking last time. My criteria was: fast + small + low + AWD, and I strongly considered a 2010 STI 5-door. Our 6-year-old Legacy wagon is still rock solid and has been unstoppable in any weather.

Grab a copy of the current year Consumer Reports auto ratings, that's a good place to browse offerings with reasonably accurate opinions.

Lots of Honda Civic hatchbacks out there, but your experience may vary. I am no fan of the current Civic.

A three-year old Honda Accord coupe might be the right thing for you (similar size to the Camry)

Definitely stop by a Subaru dealer. I am completely sold on AWD and they all have it (at the moment)

Audis are ridiculously cool, VW in there too. Some durability questions but I have not personally experienced anything bad. yet.

Nissan is a question mark. I had one for four years and the mechanicals were solid - great engine, handling - but some general stuff failed that was completely unexpected... bad design in the window motors led to random failures, headlights that were strangely dim, a crack that appeared in the cover of the tach gauge for no apparent reason, etc. It's like there was a random cheapness scattered throughout the thing. I really enjoyed that car but I am not sure I'd recommend a Nissan.

I've driven a Mini since 2007. I bought a used 2003 base model. I fucking love that car. It handles great in any weather. I've driven the fucker over the Santiam pass in Oregon every winter in blizzard conditions without having to put on chains because the traction control is that awesome. I can also fit more stuff in the back with the seats folded down than my fiancée can fit in her Beretta. Having said that, I've also had a shitload of electrical problems. The airbag sensor light is always on, the windows frequently get stuck so you have to bang on the doors, the headlights burn out really fast, the idle shudders if you have the AC on while stopped, etc... Most electrical problems are known to BMW, but they don't give a fuck. I fixed the idle shudder thing with upgraded sparkugs & wires. Having said that, the S models and automatic transmission models...I wouldn't fuck one of those with a stolen dick. The S models have a catching on fire issue, and the earlier CVT automatic transmissions explode at 70-80K miles. Having said all that, my next car is going to be a manual base model Mini. I'd rub my dick all over my car every morning before work if I didn't have neighbors.

Non-S models have the terrible CVT transmission, but the Cooper S automatic is a Aisin six-speed, and as far as I could dig in the various MINI forums I pored over, no one had anything bad to say about 'em (except "it's not a manual").

My biggest concern is the power steering pump fan, but it's been too cold for me to bother looking at that just yet, and apparently in 2006 they added a duct that helps with cooling the PS Pump. The solution to the fan 'burning out' is apparently putting an external resistor inline, with a massive heat sink on it. They're like, $10 from Mouser or something.

But yeah, the 1st gen MINIs were rife with problems that were mostly fixed in the 2005 refresh. I compare MINI fans to Apple fans. There's a weird reality distortion field. "It's the best car ever. I don't mind paying thousands of dollars in repairs!"

Regarding your headlights burning out fast, are you using OEM replacement bulbs? I know that in my Elantra, I would replace my headlights with silverstars and who knows what else, and they'd all burn out surprisingly quickly. Then, based on a forum suggestion, I replaced the bulbs with OEM bulbs, and that was three years ago. Can't say my Hyundai suggestion will necessarily work for your MINI, but it might be worth a shot.

Using OEM headlights. I hate the way super bright aftermarket bulbs look. I forgot about the steering pump fan. I replaced mine a couple years ago. Mini refused to acknowledge that the airbag sensor light problem is their fault, even after it has been proven to be an issue with how sliding the seats damages the wiring. They actually put the wiring for the airbag sensors in a place where they can be damaged by just sliding the seats back and forth. It can cause the airbag to deploy with improper force in the event of an accident. Mini refuses to fix it, so I reported the issue to the HTSA.

Nope! I think the best part is the back of the car. Heh. I would add that, having just looked at the interior shots, that's actually first time I've seen woodgrain interior options that don't look cheesy to me.

Both my Magnum & Mini have fake-manual modes (the Mini has paddle shifters on the wheel, wee!), and I very rarely use them. I might if I lived in a more hilly environment, but I'm either in the middle of the city (stop signs and traffic lights) or on long flat highways. Up until buying the Magnum, every car I've owned was a manual transmission. Autotrans/shiftronic/whatever just isn't the same. And I'm kinda okay with that.

I know next to nothing when it comes to cars. I've been the type of person who buys a used car and then proceeds to drive it till it dies. But now, I've just started a new job that's paying me considerably better than my last and I'm looking to get something a bit nicer than what I've been accustomed to. I'm looking at something in the vicinity of the Kia Sportage. We've got two kids (4 and 9) and I'd like the room in the car for the various stuff that comes along with that. Regrettably, I won't be doing too much serious looking til a month from now as I'm waiting for the refi on my mortgage and as such can't really be taking out a car loan just yet. I'm looking for collective input on what I should be looking at. Also, I'm not really sure if it makes sense to be shopping new or lightly used 2-3 years old. Thoughts?

I've never owned a car for more then 120K miles.Heh...I had my last car for nine years, and ended up racking up about 230,000 miles. It was still running fine, actually. The only "major" problem was that my radiator gave out, but it was relatively cheap to replace. That and my AC quit the summer before I traded it in (though it might have just been a motor; I never looked into it). It cemented my love of Toyotas even more.

Melissa is squarely in the "buy used" category - you do save a lot of money buying used. Having said that - she's generally not the one who goes to the garage to get the cars fixed, mostly because across the board, places have tried to pull a fast one on her. I do like that by buying used, I can pay the car off in months rather than years. I don't like finding out the car has the wrong kind of coolant in it, and that the suspension is shot, and the plugs haven't been changed in 100,000 miles, stuff like that. Now, being handy (read: cheap and internet-equipped) and having some time on my hands, I am able to take care of some repairs myself. And if you add up the cost of the repairs with the cost of the vehicle, it's still much cheaper than buying new.

But in 2001 when I bought my Hyundai Elantra, I sure did like having a 10-year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, and a 5-year 50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, not to mention five year unlimited mile roadside assistance. Given Hyundai's reputation at the time, I expected I was really going to make the most out of that. Well - you see where Hyundai is now: They make very, very reliable vehicles. I put 150,000 miles on the Elantra before trading it in.

The last two cars I've bought have been used cars. The 07 Magnum has been good to us so far, and the 06 Mini needed a little sprucing up, but we got each of them for half of what they cost new - and they're the nicest cars I've ever owned. I guess that's easy to say when the only other cars I've owned were an 01 Elantra and an 89 Dodge Colt.

When I was Magnum shopping and Mini shopping, I created a search on Cars.com, and bookmarked the results page. I checked it periodically - about once a week, maybe twice a week. It gave me a good idea of what I could expect for what price. I ended up driving two hours south for an absurdly good deal on the Magnum. The Mini we bought off a lot near our house, rather unplanned. That's not counting the year of research I did - unplanned as in, I wasn't really thinking "This weekend, I'm going to buy a car."

US News has a really nice site for comparing different kinds of vehicles. If you do decide to go used, look for an enthusiast forum for the car (or at least, the manufacturer). I was on an enthusiast forum about Hyundai Elantras. If a car that dull (at the time!) can have a huge following, pretty much any car can. Look for common issues that existing drivers have. For example, from the Mini Cooper forums I found, I learned that the 05-06 year models are preferable even to current models, and that the automatic transmission on non-S model Minis before 2007 need to be replaced around 40-60,000 miles at ~$5000 for the work. I knew there were suspension issues, and factored the cost of that into the price I was aiming for.

My 2001 BMW 325i (bought new ... the only car I've ever bought used was my first car when I was 16, a 1970 VW Beetle with no heat) has over 140,000 miles on it and it still drives and runs like it's new, not a squeak or a rattle, still tight as a drum. G and I have discussed when we'll replace my BMW with a new BMW (I want to stick with the 3 series) but I'm in no hurry, it's still a great car and I don't miss making car payments yet.

Btw, I'd never owned a car with an automatic transmission in my life until G insisted on the various Hondas as our second vehicle (CRV, Odyssey, now a Pilot); he's the primary driver of the automatic vehicles, I still always drive my 5-speed BMW. If I get a new BMW, it's still gonna have manual transmission. Although we may go with xDrive so I don't have to swap out tires 2x per year.

My current BMW looks pretty much like this (http://pics.hoobly.com/full/U26G347ISF7ZFI3EKA.jpg). We put Blizzaks on it in the winter.

CVT transmission

the CVTs are nothing compared to NAG1's in Chrysler vehicles. the only time ive heard people bitching about a CVT trans is when the service adviser is trying to explain why CVT fluid is like, $40USD a quart, and the flush is going to take 16 quarts.

Also, I'm not really sure if it makes sense to be shopping new or lightly used 2-3 years old.
If you're planning to keep the car for ten years and run up 100k+ miles, new is probably the right way to go. You'll always know its history and you'll have no mysteries about things done to it prior to your possession. If you're thinking you might need something different in five years (ie more seats, less seats, AWD, towing capability, etc) then aim for something Certified Used (http://www.edmunds.com/certified-cars/what-are-certified-used-vehicles.html), preferably a car that was leased by previous owner. I mentioned before in this thread that I've had great success with that, grabbing a three-year-old car that's been tended to under lease terms.

For a family machine I cannot say enough good things about Subaru. The wife's 06 Legacy wagon is at 55k of mostly hard miles (six mile daily inner-city Boston commute) and still bulletproof. Bought new and they gave us a ridiculous amount as a trade in for her beat-to-hell Saturn. Definitely worth a look.

So my girlfriend drives a 2005 civic and we're planning on trading it in for the new 2013 Genesis 2.0T - I'm trying to teach her how to drive stick on the speed3 but I have a feeling we will be getting the autotrans. When I test drove the genesis I was left feeling like it was a gutless wonder, but then again it was the 2012 and not the refreshed 2013. Currently the 2012 puts out 223HP on premium pump gas while the 2013 will be bumped up to 274HP on premium :)

I was very impressed with the interior of the genesis. I'm a big guy and I felt very comfortable in the drivers side seat. The radio, trim, and gauges were all very attractive and easy to access as well. Like Levi said, the warranty that Hyundai offers is awesome and is one of the driving factors for us choosing that car. Right now there are some good dealer incentives/rebates and we're kicking the idea around about leasing. Who here has leased a car? Is there anything we need to look out for when doing a lease? (other than knowing the miles we can put on the car each year)

A decade ago, I thought Moog was cool because of synthesizers. Thanks to my Magnum, I have an entirely different Moog to appreciate :p

So far we've only replaced one outer tie rod, but I'm going to replace the other one before we hit the road. Bought the car in late 2010 with just over 40,000 miles on it, for under 14,000, and the previous owners appear to be a family (based on the toys and photos I found in between the seat cushions) so it hasn't been beaten too hard.

It's got the comfort package too, which is perfect for roadtrip purposes. Power adjustable heated leather seats, power adjustable pedals, sunroof... A real cruiser, this one.

Semi-related, I've got a police-grade rear sway bar and an SRT8 front sway bar in my shed, waiting for the right combination of time and weather. Might get a strut tower bar just to round it all out after that...

But yeah - our intention was to buy this solely for the road trip, but it's really grown on us - even if I think the interior's a little bit boring. What the Magnum lacks in dashboard character, our Mini Cooper has in spades, so it all balances out ;)

So I've settled on a car. Bought a 2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited on Saturday.

Been thoroughly enjoying driving it and really looking forward to our weekend road trips this summer.

Went looking for a car today since I really need a new one because my 2006 Pontiac G6 has been fucking up non-stop for the past year now. Saw this today and I cannot describe the amount of want I have for this car.

I know a lot of people don't really care for the newer Chargers, but I love them. Same for the newer Challengers as well. I don't care if it has 4 doors. I'm usually with friends anyways and 4 doors just makes it easier for them to get in. 4 doors isn't a big deal to me like it is with some of my car enthusiast friends. The price was like $32,000 though and I definitely do NOT have that kind of money.

I'll just look for a used 2006-2009 Charger on Craigslist or something.

What are the opinions of the Charger here on ETS? Just curious.

I drive a Magnum, which is basically a Charger station wagon. I thought the first gen (new) Chargers looked nice from the front, but everything else was blah. The interior is bland. The sides and rear end were boring. When they refreshed it, I feel like they finished what they were originally going for, and the current generation Chargers are pretty sweet. I understand not having that kind of cash though, and the later model you can get, the better. Don't save money by getting a 2006 - there are minor fitment issues and glitches in early models that get ironed out in the later years (this is why I got a 2007 Magnum instead of a 2005 or a 2008)

If it's any indicator of how good a car is, I just drove over 10,000 miles in a month, in all kinds of conditions (literally went from 116 degrees and sandstorms in Death Valley to snowstorms in a mountain campground in Sequoia national park in the same day) and the only issue I had was a flat tire in Yosemite. The front-end suspension bits are the car's weakest points - make sure you check the tie-rod ends, either before you buy the car, or within the limited warranty period after you've bought the car. Another issue is finding a used Charger that hasn't had stupid shit done to it, and hasn't been abused.

What model are you looking at? SXT? R/T? SRT8?

I had the new charger as a loaner car when my speed3 was at the dealership and I felt the car didn't drive nicely at all. It looks AWESOME, and the interior is great too, but the steering wheel felt numb and the power was lacking when you mashed down on the pedal. After a week of having the thing I came to one conclusion: domestics still suck :( Unless you go all out and get the top of the line model you end up feeling ripped off and will be stuck with a stinker that doesn't hold its re-sell value :( (most of the time cars like the charger will be fleet'd out and it completely undercuts the used car value)

In other news, my girlfriend finally got her Genesis Coupe!

The interior is pretty awesome too (BIG upgrade from older Hyundai's)

Granted, its not as fun as my speed3, but the bump in HP was a much needed thing and the 2013 doesn't fail to deliver a great driving experience. We went with the Premium package A/T 2.0T and managed to snag the only Catalunya Copper GenCoupe in the state :) Its got leather interior, touch screen nav, XM Radio (which is pretty cool, this is my first time getting the chance to check this system out first hand), as well as the bluetooth goodies and iPhone integration. We managed to snag the car $500 below manufacturer invoice and opt'd for the extended warranty that got us 10yr/100K mile bumper to bumper coverage and full synthetic oil changes up to four times per year. If you haven't had the chance to check out Hyundai within the past few years, I highly recommend that you do. They have REALLY stepped up their game and have started to build solid cars that look nice and offer features that other manufacturers are not offering in similar cars. Hell, you can snag 2012 Premium GenCoupes for 22K brand new right now (and I'm sure you can talk them down from that price too) which is a steal. If you're not looking for a 'go fast' car but want some unique style, the 2012's are perfect.

NICE! I've been a Hyundai advocate ever since getting an Elantra in 2001, it's great to see how far they've come. I was debating getting a Veloster, but went with the Mini in the end there. If the Mini prematurely bites the dust, I'll probably replace it with a Veloster though. And how the hell did you snag that deal? You've gotta have some kind of hookup... or is it just the gift of gab?

Re: Your rental charger -- curious which trim package it was. The base model is pathetic, the SXT (with the bigger V6) is plenty for me, but once you start ramping up to the Hemi models, they start bolting on proper suspension to go with the oomf. I've got sway bars from a police-grade Charger sitting in my shed that I'm going to get installed one of these days... they're even more heavy duty than what gets put on the SRT8, muahaha.

Having said all that - the transmission is a giant weakspot for Dodge. I installed a shift kit on the Magnum which helps that tremendously, but Dodge is about a generation behind when it comes to their automatic transmissions, and it's definitely a disappointment. There are apparently new ones coming down the pike, but as it stands, the current choices just ain't great.

Sadly, the only people who grew up in and/or live in Detroit who buy Chrysler are ex Chrysler employees, so they can get the discount.

I'd LOVE to buy Detroit and support my home town and UAW friends and relatives, but I just can't bring myself to do it anymore. The ONLY car I'd consider, at this point, is the brand I swore I'd NEVER buy again after TWO prematurely dead cars:

RECAP: We went in knowing the manufacturer invoice price, fair market value, and unlisted dealer incentive discounts. Then focused on getting the price of the car down to their absolute bottom line before talking about trade-ins or cash down.

(long winded response)

Well, I did my research before going into the dealer. First I google'd the invoice price for a 2013 GenCoupe with all the bells and whistles that we wanted. Once I got that info I then googled the fair market value based on my zip code; thus giving me an idea of what my model was selling for locally. Now that I had these two bits of info, I was ready to head in to the dealer. When I got there I had a sales guy greet me and I told him "Hey, today is your lucky day. I want this car and I've already done all my research and I am ready to buy......but......" then I walked over to the car and started to look at the sticker price. I went on to say that the dealership is asking too much for the car and we will need to work on bringing this price down. He tried to pull the whole "well thats what they've been going for and the normally only stay on the lot for a day or so" blah blah blah. I just chuckled and said "ok, lets go inside and talk numbers." Once we were inside he started to ask me about any trade-ins and what I wanted for them. I told him that I did have a trade-in but lets focus on the current price of the car. He agreed and we moved forward. He went on to show me that they were originally asking $29k+ but there was a online price discount that brought it down to $28,998 and that "it was a really good deal and I would be pleased with my purchase." I let him spout off a few more meaningless details about the car and how happy I would be once he got me into one until I finally said "Look, likes not waste one another's time here. I've done my research and I know what the car is worth and how much these have been selling for locally. I want the car at invoice, nothing more. Invoice is listed at $27,129, if you can get me the car at that price then we can continue to talk (what I didn't say is they would have a deal)." He wrote down the price I gave him and walked into the lot manager's office to see what he could do. When he came back he said something to the fact of "well, you're not going to make this easy for me huh?" and I just smiled. They came back to me with a number of $27,649 and asked if we had a deal. I shook my head no and told him that he knows what I want and asked him to head back in and see what he could do. After about 10-15 minutes of waiting, the lot manager came out with a sheet that had the invoice listed + the price of delivery and a few other items on it. I looked it over while he explained that he couldn't go any lower on the price. Now that I knew what their bottom line was, I agreed that the price is decent. He then went on to ask if we finally had a deal. I said almost, but I needed one more thing. I asked them one more time if they were positive that they couldn't go any lower which they said "yes, thats as low as we can go." I said great but now I want my unlisted dealer incentive discount of $500. The lot manager sat back in his chair and had a smile on his face while saying "well played, you're good and you have done your research." Hyundai had a dealer incentive discount for customers who were leaving a competitors car (ie, our civic) and this 'discount' is more or less wiggle room for the dealer. Most of the time customer's dont know about these additional discounts. They end up paying more for the car since the dealer doesn't have to give you this type of discount if its not requested by the buyer. So, now that I had them down to the absolute bottom price of $27,149, I was willing to talk about my trade-ins. I had two; one being the 2005 Civic (112k miles) and the other being a 2007 F-150 SuperCrew 4x4 (122K miles). We went back and forth on the trade-in values but finally ended up right where I wanted to be. Right before we were going to sign everything, we asked for a moment alone in the car. We went out and I jumped on my iphone and started looking around for another GenCoupe that was cheaper. I ended up finding one and got the dealer on the phone. (this is where I get kinda dirty) I gave the guy the run down on what was happening and that if they could give me the car for cheaper than what they were asking, I would drive down to their lot asap. They said that they were sure they could give me a better offer and told me to come in. I said "great, we will see you soon." Then I went inside and told the guys that I think we were going to sit on it for a while and check out another dealer. The lot manager came out again and said "well, I want your business. I dont want you going to another dealership. What is it going to to take to sell you this car?" I told him that the price was just a little too high for my liking and that even though the other dealer didn't have the color I wanted, I was willing to sacrifice that detail in order to get a cheaper price. (In reality we had no intentions of getting that other car since we REALLY wanted the Catalunya Copper) The lot manager went back into his office and told me to follow. He went on to show me the invoice sheet again and said that he cant go any lower. I asked him about the dealer incentives again and he showed me a list of what they had available. I noticed that there was a repeat buyer incentive of $500 and asked if he could give us that since Winny's parents both owned a Hyundai; that would seal the deal for sure. He then made a call to someone and once he was off the phone, he said he would do it. So, in the end we got the car for $26,649 before trade-ins. :)

Ford.
For reasons too complicated to explain, I recently drove a rental Ford Fusion from DC to Boston, about 475 miles in one day. I think it was a 2010, it was not the latest - the interior and steering wheel were covered with buttons, and most were in the least intuitive place possible. I think they have tuned that. Aside from the button-chaos (the Sync system did work really well, once I figured out what control was where) it was a nice ride. Felt like a 90s Accord, and I mean that in a really good way. Good size, good handling, and pretty comfortable through some nasty stretches. I think it was an SEL; I didn't have time to look under the hood, plus it was raining like hell.

Route was beltway -> 95 -> Baltimore -> 83 (sucked) -> 81 -> 84 -> masspike -> home

anyway, +1 for Ford because that felt like a pretty good car.

The Ford Fusion is a Mazda6 in disguise :)
Lots of cars built on the Mazda-designed CD3 platform (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_CD3_platform) from the looks of it. The 08-12 Mazda 6 note says the platform is "modified" - any idea what the mod is?
Last batch of the Ford/Mazda stuff. It will be interesting to see if the 2013+ Ford models feel the same way.

Anyone have experience with a Honda Element? The 4-seater detail is the one definite thing that really puts me off... But I'm still curious. I'm thinking about selling or trading in my Volkswagen Jetta GLI 2005. For something bigger, and in the department of cheapER maintenance.

When we were looking for a vehicle for our roadtrip, it was a toss-up between the Honda Element and the Dodge Magnum. I have a friend with an Element, and she loves it, but she says she'd have gotten a more recent model, given the opportunity. Little tweaks like where the seatbelts connect & stuff like that. Sitting in the back, the stadium seating was weird - but nice.

Not sayin' I'd trade my Magnum in for one, but if Dodge hadn't made a station wagon, we'd have bought an Element.

I already love this Element for the fact it was here for me at the right time of being in serious need for a replacement under as much of a time budget as a financial budget. Talk about memories.

My VW Jetta GLI 2005 had a known coolant or coolant related issue of some kind (99.9% of the time it's been defined by the dash coolant notice that would come on upon turning on the car, 9 times out of 10), but Arizona just blew that issue up the other day with its record-day heat or whatever (lol it's all the same to me after 100, because I'm not used to it), sucking basically all the antifreeze out unbeknownst to us after the car had been parked for somewhere under 2 days. I'm hardly even a basic "car guy" (though I will aim to be that and then some after all of this), and I guess everyone else in my life here happened to forget to stop my girlfriend and I before taking off east, where, within a reasonably close drive away from my mom's (stopped to see her for a bit on our road trip/move back to Ohio from central Cali), we overheated pretty quickly once it started to go above 190/210 temp, apparently getting close enough to almost brake the car. Thankfully we weren't far out and there was a nearby exit with dealers of all things around, the first one being a Ford. We just needed to stop. As soon as we parked is when there was some noticeable smoke from underneath the hood.

The car got its diagnosis (some leak in the coolant system, let's just say, which I guess was pushed to the edge this day), got brought back to life, the people there were nice enough tending to us and our issue on a personal level having only bought antifreeze and distilled water from them, but of course my mom, girlfriend and I spent ALL damn day there being sucked into looking at their puny selection of used cars. Keep in mind it's at the peak of this terribly hot day, we're behind our desired schedule by one day, not knowing how many more will come (we have a deadline to unload the moving truck that'll be waiting for us at our destination), my two cats (who I forgot to mention being with us during all of this, including the incident) are in their carriers behind the Ford showroom counter (already with cold water by this point, still I am worried for their sanity)...just not fond of their used models...we move to their Hyundai sister dealership next door along the way (bringing the cats)...yada yada...test drive a Matrix and Sante Fe...I don't really like either...but then again I just wasn't feeling what the day brought me...I'm sweating bullets...stressed...I'm not interested in hasty decisions. Then it's just the whole dealership experience from there...no need for specifics...it's all textbook...lol...staying till past their closing time. Ultimately the sales director comes out to try to offer something better for the Matrix, with the trade-in option, but I rejected the hell out of it, pretty easily because he sure didn't "get" customer service in a presentational sense. Just kinda rude. They were trying to play all kinds of cards. This all was my first dealership experience where I had to handle things, so that moment in particular felt good. And I felt the best I did in the whole day once the Jetta was towed to mom's house (to be on the safe side, though it is running stable), and I stayed up till 2 a.m. looking up dealer and owner Elements in the general area to go check out first thing next day.

I'd laid out a bunch of stops, but only got to two by the conclusion. I first went to one dealer who would've accepted the trade without even seeing it, but they wouldn't budge on their Element's price, at all. While that one was a 2003, I liked it a little more because it was an EX (though no moonroof, so no difference there), but most importantly it had pretty considerably less miles than my 2005 I went with. So...yada yada yada...the Honda dealership nearest to my mom's place comes to the rescue...it was on the list but I left it for last because it was one of the LXs. They also honored a trade without seeing it, so I'm bringing that in there today. I'm choosing to leave out other things that went down, it was "some day" also. Different way. The dealership experience rounded off nicely though.

The Element owners club forum shows promise for getting creative for the things I wish it came with, so that's cool to know. For one thing, I totally see myself rigging a raised center console/armrest or something (I really appreciate when I can rest my right elbow when I'm driving!). However, I do wish it was AWD, for Ohio winter, but that's okay.

The rest of this drive should be infinitely better than the first 10 hours were. I can't wait.

Time to go clean out the Jetta and swap all my baggage and personal car stuff to my new...ELEMENT?!?! (o: Now we've got serious space for my babies in the back to roam around in!!

Sadly, the wife in the Saturn was sitting in the back seat and didn't have her seatbelt on. When the car hit me, she was thrown into the front seat and her head hit the windshield which ended up scalping her clean. My boss just happened to be driving by and stopped to help out, she said she caught a glimpse of her and she didn't look good at all......I am happy to report that she is ok now and is home recovering. Now I have to lawyer up since the driver was uninsured and my medical bills are building up. My PIP through StateFarm most likely won't cover it all, not to mention I might have some permanent damage to my face above my eye. :(

On the flip side though, I just bought my new (used) car today! It's a 2011 Mazdaspeed3 that has every single bell and whistle that you could get from the dealer. The other kicker is that the previous owner had the car fully built by a company called Corksport and the car makes 315hp at the crank, 295hp to the wheels (and this is on a very conservative tune).

I've been so pissed off at my BMW X3, I'm thanking God it's a lease and I'm never getting another one. It's been in FIVE FUCKING TIMES for this problem with the computer module that controls the air bags, the SRS or Supplemental Restraint System, which seems to be triggered whenever it rains a lot. Since it's a lease, I never pay for it and I always get a free loaner but it's maddening. My lease is up in July of '15, and two months ago when this happened again, my husband took it to the dealer (we had to wait NEARLY A WEEK to get it in since they were short on loaners ... hmmmmm, short on loaners; THIS IS A BMW AND A MINI DEALER) and told our regular service guy that we were so fed up with this, we were looking at getting an Acura RDX when the lease expired.

The service guy said: "Well, you can get reliability, or you can get performance"

Dealer's full of shit - that's a family BMW, not a TVR. The company trades on quality, and that car and that dealer have let their side down. If you do want to stick with BMW, you might want to try a different dealership, as they do vary a lot - my local Jaguar dealer charges 3x what most of them do, for example.
FWIW, my Jag's not put a foot wrong (with the exception of poor treatment by a previous owner) and the last one saved my life in a similar manner to TIMP's adamantium Mini, and both go like a frictionless cheetah on cocaine.

This X3 has a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 240 horsepower so it's not grandma's car, but BMWs have been having a bitch of a time with these computer modules (and, really, FUCK these run flat tires) and I realize the dealers are stuck dealing with this shit but come on, BMW needs to fix this and stop fucking around. BMW corporate is handling this, directly, and sending my dealer new computer modules every time. From what I understand, they cost about $1,300 each.

But, yeah, I'm done with this dealer, too. It's Knauz on the North Shore, they do a lot besides BMW; Mercedes, Land Rover, Mini, Hyundai.

By the way, my car before the X3 was a 325i that we bought brand new from this same dealer and this same dealer serviced that 325i for 12 years until the car died with 125,000 miles on it.

I'm more surprised when a Mini owner doesn't have problems. With all due respect to owners those things are notorious for issues- been awhile since i looked but a lot of electrical shit.

New, at least you got a warranty, but I'd stay far away from a used one.

I'm fortunate in that we happen to live a stone's throw from a well renowned Mini shop called Helix Motorsports. I've had a couple of issues with the 2006 Cooper S we bought three years ago that a Mini dealer would have taken us to the cleaners over, but having an independent shop that knew it's shit meant we were in good shape afterward. Case in point, one of the exhausts was rusting out (something my 1989 Dodge Colt and 2001 Hyundai Elantra didn't have happen in the 125,000+ miles I had either of them) - apparently a common problem because of a design flaw. If I bought a stock exhaust from the dealer, I'd be looking at well over a thousand bucks. Even a third party exhaust is at least $600. Most people who go to Helix go there to get stuff like a performance exhaust, and they keep the stock exhausts kicking around just in case. I got a brand new exhaust for $180, installed.

It's pretty widely known in the Mini community that 2006 was the peak year for the car. We've got an auto transmission, which is kind of a heresy in the Mini world, but we live in a city, and we got tired of manuals. We got lucky in buying an S, because standard Coopers with automatics apparently had a problem where the auto transmission only lasted about 30,000 miles, and cost something like $6,000 to replace. We only paid $10,000 for our Mini (100,000 miles scares people), but it's almost completely tricked out from the factory, and was always a daily driver rather than a track or autocross beast. Before this car, I scoffed at things like in-dash GPS and automatic climate control and never knew the pleasure of heated seats. Now I'm going to rue the day we have to get rid of it, because I'll never get those things that cheaply ever again. Just for grins, I priced out a 2015 Cooper S with similar trappings, and it's over $30,000 - no way I'd pay that.

But, yeah. Dear reader, if you ever want to buy a Mini Cooper, get a 2005 or 2006 Mini Cooper S. Earlier than that and you get beta-testy automobile weirdness. Later than that and they switched from superchargers to turbochargers that get carbon buildup all up in everything... and they progressively get uglier from 2007 on up.

Just curious - I noticed in your FB posts that you had a bunch of trouble with the Mini. Is that something you'd be cool with sharing the details of?

Well, to start it off, 2007 marked the year that the Cooper S went from Supercharger to Turbocharger. Clearly someone dropped the ball with this build as the turbo kit that was applied to the italian engine was crap. Lots of blow by and carbon build up on the injectors and in the intake. Mini refuses to clean issue under warranty and wants roughly $600 to sandblast everything with walnut bits. The turbos on the '07 have a high failure rate from what I've been told. When I checked this with Seattle Mini, they ran my VIN and yup, my turbo was replaced at 19k miles. I also found out that the previous owner had driven over something on the freeway and it ended up damaging the exhaust as well as the intercooler + turbo. This was all at 23k miles. I bought the car with 26k miles at a Buick dealer who claimed to have done all warranty work with Seattle Mini, but after talking to the dealer the only thing that was done was an oil change. I was pretty pissed at this point but told Seattle Mini to take a look at the car from bumper to bumper and give me a rundown of all the issues they found. Here is a general rundown that I got when I went bak to pick up my car:

1. Excessive carbon build up on injectors and intake system
2. Excessive shaft play with turbo blades.
3. Water pump failed to pass (they somehow got Mini USA to cover this at no cost to me)
4. Timing chain was loose, needs replacement
5. Front brakes worn below recommended safe level (The Buick dealer said they looks like they have 60-70% remaining)

This was all found out after owning the car for three weeks. I was pretty upset since this just added to the frustration of breaking up with the fiance just a month prior. Fast forward two months to July. I drove the Mini down to San Diego and was on my way back up to Seattle when I stopped in SF to spend some time with friends. The morning that I was supposed to head out I get a check engine light. FUCKING. WONDERFUL. So I have the car towed into SF Mini and it takes them two days to figure out what was wrong. Turns out a sensor had gone out that allows the car to read engine temps or some shit. SF Mini pretty much knew they had me by my balls and charged me $24.95 for the sensor, and $789.97 in labor. At this point I wanted to shove the car over a cliff and call it a day, but I needed to get back to seattle. I reluctantly paid the tab and drove home more pissed off than I was when I originally drove down to San Diego (which was for my father's passing).

Here is a picture of the sensor that was replaced.....I've kept it as a constant reminder of why I will never buy german again.

No, it's mostly original minus a really awesome sound system setup the previous owner had. When you rev it the roar is unreal. I'll look into mods and performance tweaks as I own it. Acquiring knowledge through time!

Check out LXforums.com - dig deep enough in the archives and you'll run across me and Charlie Clouser. He's a huge Mopar fan. I have a 2007 Dodge Magnum that I drove around the country. Solid vehicle, it's been very reliable - although it's worth noting that the OEM front-end suspension parts aren't great - you can read more about that at the forum I mentioned earlier though. So I drove it today to work. Loved it. Very smooth and extremely tight in handling. Great sound system. Exceptional condition inside and I forgot to mention earlier about any modifications (I answered it being mostly original, which it is). It is all original minus a K&N intake system that was installed by the previous owner. The base horsepower for the model is 250 but I'd wager it's higher due to it. I haven't tested it fully. I plan to find out some day. Taking baby steps as I was never the MOST car savvy guy in the room but I'm gonna change that owning this badass car. I wanna know all the in's and out's. The previous owner took good care of this, I actually think his only reason for trading it is probably buying a newer model.

Tremendous! If you download a dyno app you might be able to determine how much of a boost the custom intake gave the car.

None. One day, the LXForum guys did comprehensive dyno tests across a number of intakes, and finally, with no intake at all. Turns out they're for show, not for power, when it comes to modern Mopars. The onboard computers auto-tune.
@Space Suicide (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=532) 3.5l V6? That's what my Magnum is, as it's also 250 horsepower. Coming from a 140hp Hyundai Elantra, it feels like a beast, but if you've driven an SRT8, it's evident that you 'only' have 250hp, and that it's fucking plenty.

Don't fuck around with the power. Dodge has great engineers, they did their job, you'll only fuck it up. The improvements I can recommend personally: For better handling, upgrade your sway bars. There are a few different thicknesses, the beefiest being the Police equipment sways. I changed out my front sway to police sway, and I've got a rear police sway (in storage at the moment, unfortunately) that I bought when I thought I had more time than I actually did. This will reduce body flex, making it so you don't have to slow down as much while making turns - your tires may complain though, be careful.

There was a pretty sweet strut tower bar a vendor was selling a few years ago that would tighten things up even more, but I never quite went that far.

Do some research on the appropriate forums for the best upgrades for your front end, and as soon as you start seeing issues with your front axles, just swap out all the associated parts as directed online. Preventative maintenance.

Do you find the automatic transmission feels a little bit sluggish? This will blow your goddamn mind (http://www.zautotech.com/tranzformer.html). Our Magnum went from "Wow, this thing is pretty powerful huh" to "I'm going to try to make that yellow light HOLY SHIT IT PUSHED ME BACK INTO MY SEAT"

Your fuel injector should be pretty easy to get to from the engine bay; clean that bad boy out, and then throw a Big Bully Catch Can (http://www.bigbullyintakes.com/) into the mix - but only if you know you'll take the time to empty it out from time to time.

Gotta say, I am loving my Acura RDX. I have had it for a year, now, no problems other than the airbag recall, and my Acura dealer let me keep my RDX in my own garage (I just had to show them a pic of my odometer) and they gave me a free loaner (a Jeep Cherokee from Enterprise) for over 2 months until the new airbag arrived. Even though we started up the RDX regularly to avoid a dead battery (and moved it out of the garage and drove it around the driveway to avoid flat spots on the tires), we still ended up with a dead battery; my insurance carrier sent service to jump the battery, then Acura replaced my battery. The RDX has a 273-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine, so it's really peppy. The only thing I wish it had (that my BMW X3 had) is power retractable side mirrors.

Mine's a 2015, the RDX is smaller than a MDX natch. G is looking at a MDX, although he's also considering that mid-size Mercedes SUV (he wants to trade in his Honda Accord next year). G wants me to get a convertible but I'm too damned practical, too. I am considering going back to a sedan when my lease runs out in 2 years, possibly Lexus ES.

i guess that's the trade secret, classic cars are easier to DIY, thus they have low equity / overhead and high sale value. though i have no plans to sell.
