oh i can't wait until you two have seen it so i can talk about it with you.
even just to to talk about the fact that even had it no dialogue, it was worth seeing for the visuals alone.
that man has an eye that speaks SO LOUD.
so few film makers can create brain fodder, imo, that address all of the senses.

Ok. I saw it and I loved it! This is on par with Life Aquatic. I thought the performances were spot on and the timing and attention to detail was impeccable.

Finally saw it today and right now, film of the year so far and Ralph Fiennes better get a fucking Oscar nod. He's so fucking good in this film. Here's my review (http://thevoid99.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-grand-budapest-hotel.html)

did you find it hard to process and then shake the ending?
i am STILL doing that, four days later. lol.
it reminds me (and bear with me here) of a headless chicken flapping around the hen house...the separation of body and brain take a while to line up again.
fuck. i cannot think of a more elegant analogy right now. lol.

I think it takes a certain pedigree of people to understand and appreciate Wes Anderson's films. I had an ex who didn't get Life Aquatic. He is an idiot. I'm glad I'm in such good company here.

I'm tempted to see it again. It was that good

I love Wes Anderson's dialogue beats and framing of shots.

I just wish he'd have two main female characters talk about something other than men more often.

Amazing! Simply wonderful! Wes Anderson has a total gift for immersing you into a story and a world the way a gifted storyteller or beautifully drawn book could when we were children. This is as close as I can get to describing the feeling I experience, especially from Grand Budapest Hotel and his previous Moonrise Kingdom. But I think Grand Budapest probably tops my list of Anderson's films right now. Everything and everyone in the film was top notch. I cannot think of a single criticism, really!

Watched it today (at Fort Wayne, Indiana's Cinema Center (http://www.cinemacenter.org/), a nice little arthouse theater smack dab in the cultural district of what's seen as one of the Midwest's more conservative cities) and enjoyed it immensely. While there is a presence of humor throughout I can say I only truly laughed at a couple of bits, which is okay. The grand visual style presented here is taking over from the situational comedy of films like Rushmore, Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic. That's not to say I wasn't invested in the story, the characters felt as fleshed out as anyone in those movies (the first two anyway).

Let me say I was also impressed with the music. I'd always hoped Mark would work again in the role of primary composer, but with this film Alexandre has really stepped up and manage to weave a style wholly appropriate to the Anderson aesthetic.

Absolutely adored the movie. Although the cackling from the lady behind me was a bit distracting at times...

I'd rank it in the top 3 of my favourite Wes movies. I'm still partial to the divisive Life Aquatic.

Also... I don't agree with the statement that it takes a certain pedigree of person to appreciate his films. I think that statement falls right into the trap that critics of Wes's films make towards their fans (pretentious and style over substance). If someone doesn't get the film, then that is OK. To each their own, right?

I really need to go and see this. My town's cinema is garbage and only shows the bottom of the barrell blockbuster movies, anything that resembles a plot I have to go to the next town over.

Life Aquatic and Moonrise Kingdom are brilliant.

I'm surprised on how Life Aquatic performed compared to Wes' other films. I would want to say that Wes' films were of cult status as of yet but the Royal Tennebaums (which was released in 2001) proved me wrong.

I'm happy that Grand Budapest Hotel has done so well.

I'm glad Wes succeed with this film not just artistically and critically but also finally got the chance to hit paydirt commercially. I just hope he sticks to what works no matter if it's an ambitious film or a small film. He puts my ass in the seat!!!!!

And the Oscar for Best Actor goes to... Ralph Fiennes. I'm calling it.I think this too, but then I saw he got screwed out of an Oscar back in 1993. Didn't get one for Schnidler's List.

Overall, I really enjoyed this film. Some of the pacing was so great and the casting was just amazing. I feel like I have seen Wilhem Dafoe in so long . Loved the all the scenes with the models: the hotel, the venicular, the skiing.

I do wish there were more women in the film.

I don't think I've seen any of his others so I'm going to be looking to do that soon.

I don't see it getting any Oscar attention sadly, because it opened in March. I'll be very happy to eat my words if I'm wrong though.

Hmm, I might need to watch GBH again sometime...

I saw it the other night and was kinda disappointed, it just seem sort of flat. There weren't many moments that made me smile or laugh and I don't have any stand out moments sticking in my head like I usually do with Anderson's films. All the main characters seemed under-developed and the side characters even more so.

I just watched this for the first time and I enjoyed it but I don't need to see it again anytime soon. It just falls a little short in what made Life Aquatic and Moonrise so enthralling. Still it's good to see films and directors like Wes still creating in this day and age.

I don't see it this way. I just think Wes Anderson is extremely erratic. Yes his movies would be confusing to people used to Tranformers, but I think people can pick up the aesthetic pretty quickly if they are trying and have a brain.

For me, I didn't get (and therefore hated) Life Aquatic. I also disliked Tenenbaums and wasn't thrilled with Bottle Rocket & Moonrise (i was just 50/50 on it..it was real slow at times for me, and a bit pedo-creepy). But I loved Darjeeling, Rushmore, Fantastic Mr. Fox, & now Grand Budapest.

So having only seen The Grand Budapest, Moonrise and Life Aquatic is there any particular film I should be seeking out next? Tennenbaums seems to be a popular choice.

I'd go with Rushmore & Darjeeling. Rushmore is the funniest of his movies, and Darjeeling is just so beautiful to look that.

onthewall2983

Rushmore is still my favorite of his. Max Fischer is the kind of kid I wish I was more like in high school, ambitious and daring (even if his grades suffered). Plus there are so many little beautiful moments of film acting that it's hard to resist. A perfect little movie.

I think Tennenbaums is his best movie, by far. My personal favorite though is Life Aquatic.

Although i think my answer as to which you should see next depends on which of the three you liked the most:

If it was Life Aquatic-->Tennenbaums
Moonrise Kingdom--> Rushmore
Grand Budapest-->Darjeeling

(i'd be real surprised if Grand Budapest was your fav of the three though)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Might just be a case of what I come across first but Rushmore and Tennenbaums sounds like a likely destination.
