Here's your place to post and talk about news items that don't necessarily warrant their own thread but are worth discussion.

Here's one. Kind of important. The senate just voted to keep a provision in the National Defense Authorization Act that would allow American citizens to be imprisoned, indefinitely, without due process, if they are suspected of being a terrorist. Yeah, that shit happened. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/29/senate-votes-to-let-military-detain-americans-indefinitely_n_1119473.html) This is insane. Here's a petition asking Obama to veto this. (http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/ndaa/?source=fb)

Admin edit: Actually, considering the gravity of the subject, the topic is worthy of its own thread.

Good time to bring up the racist woman on a tram incident.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=i47HoiM0Au8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i47HoiM0Au8)

I used to take this tram every day to go to school. She got arrested (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-15933829) following the video becoming so popular online.

Due to a current class action settlement underway against Ticketmaster, if you bought tickets through TicketMaster from Oct. 21, 1999 - Oct. 19, 2011 you can join. Should it win, you will receive codes for discounts of $1.50 for each ticket you bought ($1.50 TicketMaster cash, that is...towards another ticket). If you had UPS deliver, that's another $5 each time. Not too great, like $25.50 max per person, and of course U.S. only so I'm fucked out of it. Still interesting though.

She was, however, a massive cunt. It's not a fine line at all. The law in the UK (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1986/64/section/4A) is quite clear: "Expressions of hatred toward someone on account of that person's colour, race, nationality (including citizenship), ethnic or national origin, religion, or sexual orientation is forbidden. Yes. I understand harassment is an issue, but saying something racist or homophobic shouldn't be against the law. It makes someone an asshole, sure. But it should not be illegal. That's ridiculous. Hurting someone's feelings shouldn't get you arrested.

Unless it's actually leading to violence. Enticing violence through abuse of your right of free speech, I think, should be illegal.

How would bullying fit in? I agree for the most part that people should be able to say hateful things and express hateful ideas And only have to suffer everyone knowing they are bigoted assholes, but at some point doesn't someone cross the line into directly harming another person? Call it bullying, harassment, stalking, terrorism, whatever, you're using your words and general behavior to harm people. To a point It should probably be let go. I mean people shouldn't jailed for a simple insult. But if you take it so far as to make a person legitimately afraid, or to make an entire train horrified? At some point words have to be counted. Ideas are fine, but abuse is abuse.

theruiner

3) We in England have freedom of speech. You live in America - seen the UC Davis pepper spray video?I'm strictly going by the law that Tim posted. That doesn't sound like free speech to me. Now, maybe the spirit of the law isn't the same as the letter of the law in that situation, maybe it's enforced differently than the way it's read, I don't know. But, like I said, I was going by the way it was written, and was only commenting on the law itself.

And no one is arguing that we don't have our share of problems, nor was I arguing free speech in America versus England or anywhere else.

How would bullying fit in? Ideas are fine, but abuse is abuse. You took my quote out of context. Which is understandable; maybe I didn't quite explain my argument as well as I could have. I'm not saying what she did wasn't harassment. In the section you quoted me from, I was specificially talking about the law that Tim brought up. You and I are pretty much in agreement, actually.

Yeah, I realized that after I posted my reply. Sorry about that.

Though maybe it's good that I clairifed, anyway, just so no one misunderstood what I was saying. *shrug* Or maybe I just screwed up. ha ha.

It's specific to hate crime.

A person who uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting, is guilty of an offence if—
(a) he intends thereby to stir up racial hatred, or
(b) having regard to all the circumstances racial hatred is likely to be stirred up thereby.

...

The Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_and_Religious_Hatred_Act_2006) amended the Public Order Act 1986 by adding Part 3A. That Part says, "A person who uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred." The Part protects freedom of expression by stating in Section 29J:

Nothing in this Part shall be read or given effect in a way which prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents, or of any other belief system or the beliefs or practices of its adherents, or proselytising or urging adherents of a different religion or belief system to cease practising their religion or belief system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech_laws_in_the_United_Kingdom

In other words, the behavior must be threatening and the law cannot be enforced to limit speech otherwise. Note that threatening basically means "violence" in this context.

theruiner
12-05-2011, 01:04 PM
Ah, gotcha. Well, to be fair, that context wasn't in the original post. In the context of what we were talking about, it seemed to be specifically talking about speech in general, not hate crimes. Lesson learned, though- next time I'll check the link and read the entire statement in context.

They had to use a real model's face, so they can't have saved on much money there. I don't get why we can't look at clothing on actual humans before we buy it. It seems to be almost false advertising, as the clothes never look as good on real people. But I guess that's marketing and why I never bothered to go into the business.

Gathered from a student on lockdown at a campus library posting online: "Supposedly there was an armed robbery in Radford (like 20-30 minutes away) and the suspect matched the description of our shooter, so when the police pulled him over here...that could be what this is all about."

Not in any way comparable to the Cho Seung-Hui rampage... it appears to be just a random dude fleeing from the cops. Still awful that the students are on lockdown again, but at least it's not one of their own students targeting other students.

For anyone that followed it like I did, you obviously know it didn't end well. I live in that area and it's been hard to avoid it. I'm not even sure why I'm bringing it up here, other than possibly having a venue to talk about it where it doesn't end up a family discussion like it would on Facebook. By some accounts from a family member who's had to deal with the local press before, they've done a bang-up job of reporting it with the proper respect and clarity on all issues that the Nancy Grace's of the world can't grasp.

I had a life-changing experience this year, centered around a newborn child. Things like this just tear me apart a little. Some people are so fucking weak, all they can do to compensate is destroy the innocent. This is something I will never understand.

California's Proposition 8 has been ruled as unconstitutional. Hope for the intelligence of humanity after all???
Well, sort of. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled 2-1 against Prop 8 on the narrow grounds that, first of all, marriage or an arrangement nearly functionally identical to marriage had for a time been legal for same-sex couples, and that this right cannot be removed by popular vote. Second, they ruled that the term 'marriage' is of primarily symbolic value and that the law has no 'rational basis' for prohibiting gays from that term when they've been given an arrangement like civil unions that affords most or all legal benefits available to 'marriages'. This has no real legal effects until the Supreme Court issues an opinion on the matter (it's pretty much a sure thing they'll grant cert), probably about a year from now. What the 9th Circuit's opinion *doesn't* address is the broader issue of the constitutionality of prohibiting same-sex marriage.

If the Supreme Court upholds this ruling, though, they could rule narrowly enough that it would apply only to California. However, as a number of legal commentators have been pointing out, the arguments made in the 9th Circuit majority opinion have some problems, and at this point one may very well be right to dislike this decision while still supporting the cause of same-sex marriage equality.

Depending on how deep the snow was, i.e. completely covering his car, it would insulate and hold in whatever modicum of heat he had.

Now the big thing is his mental state. Obviously he had the will to hold out for as long as he could instead of just saying "Well, I had a good run!" and going to sleep forever.

If you (or anybody else, here) isn't aware of how nearly everything you do online or related to commerce is tracked, now is better than never to find out. You're being tracked, all the time, solely for money and profit. Facebook? It's not there for your enjoyment; it's a profit and data-mining venture. Every time you use a credit or debit card, or a grocery store discount card, your behavior was tracked. Since the data is being used solely for marketing and capitalism, it isn't considered nefarious. This teen getting the pregnancy coupons from Target was in Target's "system," somehow; her spending at Target was tracked, so she must have a Target Red Card. I have a Target Red Card and that's the only way I get coupons.

It ruins the perception of Zimmerman as a gun wielding conservative vigilante, it's like when that guy shot up the Holocaust museum, news networks were more than happy to paint the picture of a crazed Republican, but once it starting trickling out that he was a major leftist they basically just started downplaying his politics.

Corvus T. Cosmonaut
03-29-2012, 05:44 PM
I haven't seen any coverage on George Zimmerman's political party affiliation, really. Outside rants on the internet either attempting to paint him as right-wing or Republican, or an even larger number of conservative pieces about how leftist-liberal media have been trying to paint Zimmerman as Republican, the overwhelming response seems to be, just, "Murderer!" But then I don't watch television news because so much of it is worthless.

The Holocaust shooter was a major leftist described as a nut job right winger, that's not exaggeration, nor is the fact that the story was swayed by the leftist media once those facts came out. As far as the Zimmerman thing goes, it has become political, unless you think taking shots at Jeb Bush and the NRA aren't blatantly political pot shots, and that politicians implying racism in the case in the same breath as supposed racism amongst conservatives isn't political too.

The Holocaust shooter was a major leftist.

I'm afraid James von Brunn was no such thing (even though it would be irrelevant had he been). I would go so far as to argue that he was neither a right or left winger, but a holocaust denier, a white supremacist, and Fed conspiracy theorist; things I don't attribute to either 'wing' and tend to exist on their own political spectrum. But where he did show left/right political leanings, von Brunn was a Bush apologist, a Palin apologist, and a Birther (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/documents/2009/06/james-w-von-brunn-obama-is-missing.php?page=1&ref=fpblg).

I didn't really pay your comments about von Brunn much mind, mostly because they were irrelevant to the situation at hand, but for some reason I decided to check and immediately failed to find anything that would merit him a 'Leftist' label (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=James+von+Brunn); not using a coherent definition of the term 'Leftist' anyway. You know, I thought I was just being paranoid, that an argument that bad would probably include things that were marginally true, but, holy shit man, I'm a little creeped out.

I'll be charitable enough to give you Truther as a leftist position (although I know there are contrary examples), and I'll even give you the matter of Bush and bitching about neocons (tho here, too, I can point to some rather scathing commentary from libertarians and non-neocon conservatives), but how are Holocaust denial and anti-semitism inherently "leftist"? And, please, include an explanation about what "leftist" actually means, to you.

The point is people will call him whatever's convenient for their own political group because people are biased and want to dally about like the actions of an asshole speak to the ethical ground of the whole. Which is bullshit, obviously—it's bullshit when liberal media types write editorials about so-and-so shooting what or whomever and doesn't-that-say-so-much-about-the-GOP-and-NRA? and so on, and it's bullshit when the other side clings to something and starts weaving their tale of atheistic secularism and dehumanizing communism and ethical voids and so on.

All of that is the sort of thing we ought NOT be getting tied up on, as in the case of Brunn. His madness transcends political categorization, and he's best described as that worst-of-all-worlds beast we've come over the past decade or two to know as "the conspiracy theorist", who knows no allegation of deceit too unbelievable. But even that is an over-simplification and a way of attempting to build some kind of sociological construct through which we can begin to understand these people, when really Brunn was just sick, as anyone who'd do such a thing was sick, and as healthy and sane and reasonably or at least comparatively well-balanced people we don't really have access to the sort of thought and feelings that pounded against the inside of his skull before he decided to open fire in that museum.

I'd argue that anyone who belived that the government perpetrated something of that scale would be unlikely to support anyone currently or in a position to run for office.

how are Holocaust denial and anti-semitism inherently "leftist"? And, please, include an explanation about what "leftist" actually means, to you. Exactly my thoughts: 'Von Brunn a "Leftist" huh? Surprised, but I suppose it's possible he's some kind of wannabe one-man Weather Underground or Misguided Gringo Zapatista. Let me actually google this . . . ' And, oh dear. Nope, nothing near that coherent. Tonight, Venus puts on a cosmic light show
here’s how to see it

Once every eight years, a luminous Venus passes directly between Earth and an elusive cluster of stars known as the Pleiades. Tonight, you'll have a chance to witness this event with your own eyes.

The photo up top was taken a few days ago on the evening of March 31st, and showcases the two astronomical entities that you'll be looking for. Obvious-as-ever is Venus, the brightest object in the night sky save for the Moon, beaming on the right. Less dazzling, but conspicuous in its own right, is the cluster of blue stars gathered on the left. These are the Pleiades.

Also known as Messier object 45 (M45) or the "Seven Sisters," the young star cluster is thought to have formed less than 100 million years ago, which helps explain the blue-white hue of its largest members (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap091014.html). At just 400 light years away, the Pleiades are still visible with the naked eye, but they're usually easier to spot with a pair of binoculars or a small telescope. Tonight, however, you should be able to spot them due to their proximity to Venus. According to NASA, the planet will join the Pleiades in the night sky beginning just after sunset, making it "look like a supernova has gone off inside the cluster."

Full size (http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17ifxttms7imfgif/original.gif)
http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17ifxttms7imfgif/medium.gif

The cosmic conjunction began last night, and will remain visible through Wednesday, when Venus finishes passing across the face of the cluster. Tonight, however, promises to provide the most spellbinding view. Look west as soon as the Sun dips below the horizon, and remember to look for the light of Venus — you'll find it resting in the company of the Seven Sisters.

(Also: be sure to check out this breathtaking photo of the Pleiades posing with Ecuador's active Tungurahua volcano (http://io9.com/5898440/theres-so-much-awesome-in-this-photograph-i-can-hardly-stand-it).)

it's because of stories like this that I get pissed off when I see concerts where bands play too loud. When I saw My Bloody Valentine play, I left the show early even though I had earplugs in... it was just obscene. The walls of the venue were shaking, and I saw people walking around without ear plugs in (which in that case was just stupid). I get that concerts are supposed to be loud, but sometimes it gets to a point where it's just insulting and disrespectful.

This will probably be discussed right up until this summer, and I'm not sure how it's even possible to pull off, but the Olympics in London are not allowing any sharing of photos via social networks for people in attendance. (http://www.petapixel.com/2012/04/25/london-olympics-wont-allow-sharing-of-photos-and-video-via-social-networks/)

Pretty interesting in my opinion. Would Facebook pics not be 'personal'?? Are they going to eject people for taking pics from the crowd? Is that even doable?
Yeah, good luck with that, security company. Only way it would even remotely be possible would be to flood the event venues in infrared light. Invisible to us, but visible to a camera. Problem with that is that then there would be zero way of broadcasting anything ever.

I guess they're just going to google everyone in the world after the whole thing ends and start suing left and right.

My first thought when I got to this?

In Somalia, Bin Laden cautioned against al-Shabab’s harsh and rigid interpretations of Islamic law. He counseled the group to grant “the benefit of doubt when it comes to dealing with crimes and applying Sharia,” so that the most extreme punishments could be avoided.

Shit. We killed al-Qaida's conscience...

Great. Just great. The Nazi-worshipping party of Greece, "Golden Dawn", is racking up 6-8% (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/may/06/greek-elections-exit-polls-parties) so far in the elections, they will definitely be part of the new parliament if a stable government is formed.

EDIT: To put it into perspective, these guys were getting around 0.2% in previous elections. My only hope is that this surge is almost exclusively a "protest" vote and that people who voted them didn't really think through WHO they were voting (though this is not terribly reassuring either) and will understand their mistake in the following days. Because seriously, this party is Nazis Inc. Remember American History X? They're that bad.

I wish, but our astrology is not derived from misconceptions about the Mayan calendar. So I'm not really sure what the finding about Mayans plotting dates past 2012—which isn't new, BTW: we've known for ages that they weren't stopping with 2012, even if the end-of-the-worlders kept their heads in the sand—has to do with astrology in the first place.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will spread. I'm not optimistic, but I'm hoping.

While I'm completely on the side of supporting this and agree that it's a necessary progressive push, I'm going to offer the perhaps downer opinion that this is a dangerous thing to encourage right now. A large part of the backing for Prop 8 (the anti gay marriage proposition) was being sold on the bullshit that "if they legalize gay marriage, then next thing you know they're going to be teaching our kids about homosexuality in school!" And this was in CA... a progressive state, and they sadly voted in favor of Prop 8.

It's a really divisive topic in this country. The very suggestion of this sort of thing in a red state would create some really hateful public discourse. A complete meltdown would ensue. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic, but I just don't think this country is ready for this yet... and I'm willing to bet that people (assholes) are going to start pointing to this law as the result of the "slippery slope" that starts with supporting gay rights.

Search "James Von Brunn leftist" and it all comes up, not real difficult. He was a Holocaust denier, a Truther, an Anti-semite, and raged about Bush and neocons on his website. Those all read fringe left to me. But hey ignore away.

Holocaust denial signifies fringe left to you? You must be taking the piss... Name one leftist figure or movement that denies the holocaust...

I would argue "truthing" has more links to the right, they invariably come down to shadow government, nwo, big money being responsible, and anyone who knows anything about the anti semitism of the far right will recognise those silhouettes/ciphers

Just because someone is critical of bush and neocons does not mean they are left... The extreme right is critical of all non extreme right admins, does that make them left? Put very simply... If i dont think bush is right wing enough, does that mean i am left? Of course not

Out of interest, what do you define as left?

I'm only basically schooled in economy, and even I know you cannot fight your way out of a recession with cuts in government spending alone. All it does is factually lowering the spending potential of middle and lower class households, enhancing the crisis instead of pacifycing the mechanisms behind it.

That's great and all, but over here optimism is nearly dead. We only have a temporary government and it is very likely that the elections of June 17th will not produce a majority government either, not even through coalitions. And nobody seems willing to make some compromises, take responsibility and pull the country out of this mess. All that the previous election did was further prove what petty, bickering, ambitious (in a bad way) and highly dangerous politicians we have.

I don't know much about Greek politics, but is it true that there is a time limit that each party has to respect in trying to form a coalition? And that you usually don't have coalition governments.

If I look at how long our government was in the making (we broke every single record, including Iraq, most even twice over) and the problems with the Dutch coalition, it is getting difficult everywhere, and it's definitely not just Greece. Belgium and The Netherlands have a very long tradition of coalition governments, but populism coupled with a financial crisis and its devestating social effects on one hand, and the demands of the neoliberal EU Commission, is making it hard everywhere.

Are you personally affected by the cuts?

There is a time limit to form a coalition, yes. The first three parties of the election each has three days to try and form a government and if that fails then all elected parties meet under the supervision of the President of the Republic (mostly an honorary title, something like the Queen of England) in order to try and reach some form of agreement. All this happened after the elections of May 6th, and all failed, because it was painfully obvious from the very start that nobody wanted to co-operate. Sadly there is no tradition of coalition governments here. The funny thing is, I remember the whole ordeal of Belgium, and I remember thinking "Man, this is ridiculous"! The joke's on Greece now.

As to your second question, I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a job, my salary has not been affected yet (it's not an impressive salary, but it's ok) and I'm not financially exposed in any way, no loans, no mortgages etc., I have my own house (well, my mother's, but you can't be choosy with independence right now), so all in all I'm ok so far. But even for the lucky ones, there is a prevailing feeling that the shit has yet to really hit the fan and that, under present conditions, there is no forseeable future for anyone in the country. Unemployment is at 20-25% (and at 50% for young ages) and we're experiencing a wave of emigration that hasn't been seen since the aftermath of WW2 and the civil war that came right after that. What's worse is that it's not uneducated people and unspecialised workers leaving now, it's the highly educated scientists/technicians/businessmen.

Is it that parties think a second election will have a clearer winner, so they won't have to form a coalition? I mean, is there a strategy there?

It doesn't have to be bad - it depends on whether they send money back home, or not. Temporary migration might actually help Greece forward, but then there has to be a government who can make sure it's actual temporary migration. The longer the crisis last, the bigger the chance it becomes permanent of course.
I had no idea there was such a large migration wave.

I think Greece fell victim to overeagerness to disprove claims of thorough corruption. Because they started following the Comission's orders to a T almost immetiately, making those huge cuts in middle-class and lower income salaries and benefits for those groups, and offering no incentive to the economy at all. Especially because Greece has, as far as I can tell, a pretty thriving 'shadow market' economy, which is destroyed when incomes drop.
This blind capitalism is not working, and it's so frustrating to watch it happen and to be unable to stop it.
