Trying not to be build my hopes back up again, but that sure looks like a magical NIN screen....
Now I'm thinking, cool light show, screen AND flexible setlist, plus impossible to please expectations!

I'm not taking that article as gospel truth, particularly as it says '40 band members plus additional employees' unless Trent is really going for it and adding an orchestra to the mix!

I think they're talking about 'hired crew members' to help out to create the basic stage set up.
After reading this article, the pic of those eight trucks makes more sense to me now.

dominik
05-02-2014, 02:24 PM
to be fair, I'm sure musically they need less rehearsal time each leg, because all the performers on this tour have been doing it for ages now, it's not like they're adding anyone new who has to learn from scratch

you are right, but they are more or less always rehearsing, adding new songs to the setlist, etc etc.. and we don't know if there's a new band member. but reading that article really got me excited. Trent will deliver as always.

American "super group", lol. Some of this is probably lost in translation but the article sounds like it was taken directly from the Vevo part 1 Tension tour. Looks like there's definitely better production than previous 2014 shows but to a Tension level probably better to wait and see before getting too excited.

Crosses fingers and hopes for the best, and also hope it includes the NA Summer tour.

THANKS FOR CLARIFYING THAT BILL BECAUSE I KNOW MOST OF US THOUGHT THERE REALLY WOULD BE AN ORCHESTRA AND THERE WAS NO SARCASM IN THAT AT ALL!!!!

...and he obviously won't play Revealed In The Thaw or In Motion either. So annoying.

This obviously won't work, cos I mentioned the lack of The Line Begins To Blur a while back, and he played it the very next night for the first time in gawd knows how many years....lightning won't strike twice....

Though Revealed would actually work really well as a segue, in a 'A Warm Place' stylee...:p

Is that a fucking screen? Latvia gets a screen, but South America, Japan and Australia don't?

I know the NIN fanbase isn't much to look at down here, but damn. Latvia.

It's all just logistics. I don't know anything about the fanbase of Latvia versus South America, Japan, or Australia. But the Riga show is getting the setup it is because it's part of a 25-show* tour leg in a relatively small area. The whole Japan/Australia/Mexico/South America tour leg, even if you count it as a single leg, has fewer shows than that and spanned 4 continents. Although even that's kind of irrelevant because the shows in South America were all festival shows. There's a good chance the festival shows in Europe won't get the same setup either.

* 22 shows if you don't count the festival shows.

I was watching some of the footage of the Chile show and the crowd seemed amazingly into it - did they play any of the LITS south America shows? I guess Mexico is Central America, did they play there?
Yeah, they played 3 gigs in Mexico. The tour was called LITS Over South America, but Mexico is North America, so it shouldn't really count. Either that, or they should change it to "Latin America".

I don't have a car, otherwise I would

Yeah, looked into getting to those 2 Washington venues, they are basically made for people who have cars (not me either).
The White Water one is 2 hours to the nearest hotel, the other one in Ridgefield isn't quite as bad, it's about a 30 min ride.
But once again, no car...

Public transit does not go to either of them, and for some odd reason the show on the 29th offers a free shuttle service from Vancouver (Washington) to the venue before the concert starts, but nothing after the show for some reason.

Still contemplating hitting up at least one of them, the one on the 29th seems more feasible, and it makes more sense financially and geographically for my girlfriend and I to go there over Toronto.

We're thinking of flying to Portland on the 27th spending a couple days there, then taking the greyhound or amrak up to Ridgefield for the show and stay in Vancouver, WA at the hotel that is approx an hour and a half walk from the venue (could spring for a cab after the show), then just greyhound or train back to Canada the day after the show.
This seems to be the most feasible option based on what we worked out last night.

Originally wanted to hit up both, but the white water one is even more complicated for a non car user to get to.

I looked up toss design - they seem to have done some of the Tension visuals - they certainly linked to Rob Sheridan photos in November 2013

If you look at their website it's the guy that helped with a lot of the lighting for NIN this past year, including the most recent one. For Tension it says he was mostly involved in just the lighting and had little to do with the screens; however he also helped with the Grammy effects, which did have screens, so who knows. Needless to say this guy isn't a new member.

They did it in 2007 and 2008, so I don't see why it wouldn't happen in 2014. This seems to look like the previous shows setup just with the classic screen, no real elaborate thing like Tension but I could be wrong.

Well, if you look at the Tension tour, there were also quite a few of back-to-back shows, but they stilled pulled off their crazy production. Take a look: http://tour.nin.com/pastdates

I couldn't imagine Trent constructing an entire leg of a tour where some gigs are just missing entire pieces of the production that were at the gig the night before, as he usually doesn't what some audiences feel left out/ripped off. Also, having to rehearse two versions of the show seems a bit unlikely.

I think it'll come down more to the venues themselves -- remember the Vegas shows for Tension, the UK festivals where they couldn't get set up for various reasons? I think it's safe to say, just going by those events alone, that if they're doing a more visual-heavy tour than the Latin America/QOTSA tours, that they'll have some sort of fall-back setlist/lighting setup, where it'll be a bunch of fog machines, strobes and sets that are re-arranged heavily. For instance that one Vegas date at the Joint was the first show to open with All Time Low, etc.

The shows we just did in Australia and South America were pretty bare bones – the show we’re building for your neck of the woods has much heavier production than that. It’s not the same as we did last year. The challenge is that this is 100 times more hard work on my end, because I have to keep redesigning and this is now the fourth set of rehearsals. But the goal is that it’s exciting for us on stage and it’s exciting for you in the audience, and you’re not sure what’s coming.”

loved this bit:

“When I started to put this band together for this cycle I thought ‘What if I really stir things up and bring in some people you wouldn’t expect and flip it on its head?’” he reasons. “What I found then was that Robin wasn’t a part of that initial rehearsal. I had really underestimated how valuable what he brings to the table is. It’s excellent musicianship and it’s also spirit. Singing those songs, looking over and not seeing or sensing him there wasn’t right, it was then I realised I’d very much miscalculated this. The second he walked through the door it was like ‘My bad – I fucked up here and it won’t happen again.’”

What I took from that is Europe is getting a mix of everything. So, not as stripped as asia and aussie but not as big as the US tour. Which is fine by me. I have watched a lot clips from the last few tours and now going into hibernation. I want this fresh . Bringing a friend who shares the exact same music taste but cant get into NIN. That's true. I don't consider Closer to be anything special as it has been played so often. The Becoming was rehearsed already so I don't consider it too much of a surprise.

I wanna know what song they're playing in that black and white picture!

1. As far as I know the rehearsal for the becoming was just that warmup show that apparently didn't happen. So we don't know it was rehearsed. Well we do now obviously but we didn't

2. More importantly. This isn't the 2009 guitar version. This is the weird distorted album version. I don't think that's been played since 1995. Very happy. I hope it survives to the Soundgarden tour.

So for sure we have:
1000000
Terrible Lie
March of the Pigs
The Frail
The Wretched
The Becoming
Closer
Gave Up
Me, I'm Not
The Great Destroyer
Find My Way
Came Back Haunted
Wish
The Hand that Feeds
Head Like a Hole
Hurt

So we're probably missing six songs or so which could be these:

Absolutely; considering Eraser and The Becoming both haven't been played at all whatsoever since 2009, I'd say this is pretty fantastic, and old or not it is technically a comeback for Closer. There are things I could complain about, but nevertheless there's a really nice focus on TDS so it would seem and I can't complain about that.

While I generally agree with this statement, this is still part of your European shows, and some of these places haven't seen NIN in years. So for them to get a setlist like this, they're probably pretty stoked. To people in North America, yeah, the setlist is a tad "same old, same old" for die hard fans like us who read the setlists night after night and obsess over this stuff to no end. To the average NIN fan in a place like Latvia, this is a great setlist.

With that said, as long as I get to hear "The Becoming" on one of the upcoming North American shows this summer, I don't care what else is on the setlist. It's one of my top 10 favorite songs that I have still yet to experience live yet, so i'm glad it's been taken out of the grave for this this tour.

As do i. I mean I love eraser and the becoming, but realistically would much rather hear heresy and ruiner if I had to choose.

I hope reptile comes into play as well. I've yet to hear that live in person even though it does creep up often.

I'd really be content with 10 songs from TDS and 11-12 "others" for the 20 yr SG/NIN tour.

Like said too Trent CANT financially cater to the NINgeeks like ourselves. He has to play the "hits" for the casual fan. I'm going with a few people to the SG/NIN show. 2 of us are geeks, the other two just know a handful of tracks and thats what THEY would like to see. I have no problem with the "hits" as long as theres gems thrown in every show.

I could do without Closer and would much rather have All Time Low with the Closer ending though.

Yeah and guess what? That was meant to be the "goodbye" tour on which Trent pulled out all the stops and made it focused on the fans, making it a point to cover tons of loved material that hadn't always found its way into setlists, and doing generally whatever the band felt like. There was no focus on making return trips, on catering to casual fans or winning anyone over for future tours; that was it as far as anyone knew at the time.

Currently we're at a point where Trent literally just said in an interview that he's more than ready to go write another NIN album and is thoroughly enjoying touring, so it kind of makes sense that this is more of a "normal" touring cycle.

If you want to compare this to other tours, pick pretty much anything from 2005-2008, by all means, but seriously, going for the farewell tour is ridiculous. Everyone knew and everyone knows that those were special, unique things meant for something very different. That was the tour where Trent openly said at one festival (I think it was the Hurricane Festival), "We're not playing any of the hits, so if that's what you want to see, fuck off, we're the wrong band."

There's nothing wrong with discussion about sets but seriously all you do is complain and find new angles to attack from anytime anyone criticises something you've said before.

EDIT: FeelBetterINC. I'd really love to see All Time Low do the Closer tease and then lead straight into Closer, could be really awesome, especially if they were to do the original version of it without TOT breakdown (although if it became a 3-part song mash-up, that would be pretty cool as well).

Yes, on the Wave Goodbye tour 2009 they played very various setlists in Europe.
I even got to hear -Last- That was really an unexpected surprise!!
As far as I remember from the last WG-European tour, -The Becoming- was played very often. So, that's nothing new... but I read somewhere that it's another arrangement this time.
Closer wasn't played on WG. So, I'm fine with it on the setlist.
I would love to hear more different Hestitation Mark songs. As I attended just one festival show last summer and so they are still very fresh to my ears!

ManBurning

Yeah, all this tour is doing is extending to the markets that never got a chance to see the festival 2013 or Tension shows. I wouldn't expect this tour to be drastically different from what we've seen so far, with the exception of a few rare gems thrown in to keep fans from other continents wishing they had played that song at their show (The Great Destroyer, Me I'm Not, The Becoming, Eraser).

Take the [With_Teeth] tour for example in 2005-2006. They literally hit every city in the world and the setlist was almost the most static setlist I had ever seen a NIN setlist being. Wasn't til the summer Amphitheatre tour in 2006 when they finally changed up the songs drastically. Besides, I bet there are a ton of fans in Japan/Australia/Europe that are upset they never got a full blown Hesitation Marks concert like the US did. For a brand new album that's not even a year old yet, he certainly is ignoring playing most of the new songs live. There are all these songs that were played on Tension and then dropped off the face of the planet for whatever reason.

If he plays this exact set again for the NIN/Soundgraden US tour, then i'd be concerned, but I think he knows better than to do that. He said himself he wants to reinvent every leg of the tour, to me, this is the same leg as the February/March shows from earlier this year.

Krazy
05-06-2014, 04:33 PM
I'm pretty sure a lot of the fans (especially European) would go with the static set-list for higher production. You know why? Because over 99% of them are only going to one show and haven't seen every song 40+ times.

There are all these songs that were played on Tension and then dropped off the face of the planet for whatever reason.

I think part of it is that a lot of it became really connected to the sound of the Tension lineup -- Lisa and Charlotte on While I'm Still Here/Black Noise really made that song, Running requires a lot of different sounds/instruments, and in general the Tension performances of HM songs had every member doing something, with there having been 6 main players and the 2 backing singers. It's probably just a matter of a lot of the HM songs not sounding as great with only 4 members, especially when most of them are fixed/attached to specific instruments (while there's been a lot of instrument-swapping recently, it hits a point where some songs simply need constant drumming, guitar, bass, etc.) I remember a lot of people complaining that some of the HM songs sounded far "flatter" at the Tokyo dates -- and most of those were then quickly dropped (Various Methods . . . is what's coming to my mind immediately here).

Krazy
05-06-2014, 04:40 PM
I think ManBurning touched on it already- it's similar to what he did for the '06 summer tour, even if it's markets HM hasn't been played in. New tour usually equals to promoting the new album. HM just isn't new anymore, just like WT in '06. Trent really didn't do a US tour for YZ either, just a handful of tunes during LITS.

This is the most truthful statement here. All of us, we are not the average fan that Trent is catering the setlist to, we are a VERY small majority of his fanbase.
Most of us try and hit up 2,3,4 even 10 shows per tour if our budget allows, your average fan will not.

Hell, NIN came to my city last your on Tension and I STILL travelled for 3 other shows. I even said to myself "Next time NIN announces a show in Vancouver, that's the ONLY show i'm doing. I need to stop this traveling for NIN business ESPECIALLY if they come straight to me" Next thing you know... NIN announce they are gonna be at the Pemberton Festival (which is basically Vancouver, just a small drive out of city limits), What do I do? Buy tickets for Portland and make travel plans... lol. I just can't do it. I can't settle for just 1 show per tour, it's just too hard.

But I am not your average joe fan, most people here wouldn't even shell out the $300-400 to go see them 2 hrs away at the Pemberton festival, let alone travel to see a show.

So all of us that say "Ah, c'mon... Closer? Only? THTF? Ending with Hurt? AGAIN!?!? C'mon change it up!" We are a VERY small percentage of his fan base and for every 1 of us saying these songs are run into the ground, there are 10 other "average fans" on their way to a NIN show right now saying "I hope he plays The hand that Feeds and Hurt" and if they don't get to hear those songs... they'll be upset.

Yup. The only band that I'm a major fan of and will go out of my way to see- and have a legitimate reason to piss and moan about their setlist is Tool.

We NIN fans actually have it pretty damn good. And TR cares enough about the visual production to eat some of that earned money, which I'd say is well spent and probably has A LOT of average fans coming back for more shows or will hit the next tour because they know it'll be worth it.

Greatest hits albums are not made up of fan favorites. They're singles. Greatest hits compilations are made for casual fans. Give a casual fan a playlist of those songs and they won't recognize anything except Closer until the end.

According to NIN tour history it's the first time playing Latvia or Riga. Not up to date on European origins so th names may be different by now. :/

Also EDIT: probably playing Closer because it's one of the biggest hits. Wouldn't doubt to for it to be a staple during the Euro tour.

I'm assuming they'll be an a and b setlist like there has been over the last few months featuring on an alternate night basis - so hoping for Somewhat Damaged, Reptile, The Big Come Down, All Time Low, Sanctified and Last to come in for (probably) Eraser, Frail/Wretched, Becoming, Gave Up and Burn on those occasions.

It's not at all a coincidence that Last and WITT both first appeared the first time they did a tour without a static setlist. And WITT never returned and Last returned for another completely different setlist every day tour.

Yes, he has stated it's hard on his voice. Hence the reason when he had a fan sing the song's chorus during a soundcheck in 2007 in Australia.

Anyone notice the new Eraser film is a reimagining of the 1994-1995 Further Down the Spiral Eraser film? Both have desert landscapes in the beginning and bees and worms at the end. Much like the current (since last year) Hurt film is also in many ways similar (and identical) to the 1994-1995 Hurt film.
