News about new Sigur Ros is coming!

I am so happy that they are back in the studio. I love Jonsi's solo stuff (one of the best live shows I have ever seen, almost topping Lights in the Sky), but I am really looking forward to new Sigur Ros. New album in the spring yay!

Thoughts on Inni? Works completely as the opposite of Heima. I only wish they would have cut about 95% of the unnecessary "behind the scenes" footage and just put in more performances. The end of Popplagid was amazing though. My surround was on full blast, and the moment that explosion of confetti came out, I got the more enormous wave of goosebumps.

Did anyone else get the Deluxe Edition box-set? I (think) I got a piece of Orri's jacket. Pretty neat. Might have it framed with the 4 prints.

I haven't even ordered my copy of the blu-ray edition yet. :( I will soon though. I'm not in a hurry to get it by Christmas or anything. I'm not sure if i want to order any of the new light-sensitive shirts with it. I liked the old design better than the new one.

But I don't think I can bring myself to order the Deluxe Edition with the way my finances are looking. :P Otherwise I'd jump on it.

I have listened to Inni, but I haven't watched it yet I'm sad to say. The album is pretty damn great though.

I know! I it was phenomenal. The visuals were insane, but somehow they didn't overpower the music at all. I wish I could have seen it more than once.

The Jonsi show in Lawrence was easily one of the best shows that I've ever seen, as well as even topping the one time that I've seen Sigur Ros live. I slightly wept during the last song.

I've seen SR four times and saw Jonsi's show here in Vancouver, caught up with them for a drink at the same place I drank with SR after their first show here waaaay back in like 2001 or so. The Go show was pretty phenomenal.

It was really not to not feel like you were IN the show. The sound and lights were so overwhelming that I still can't explain how it felt to anyone who asks me what it was like. The Go Live DVD, while great, doesn't come close to doing the show full justice.

I'm sure they will. Jonsi seemed like he really enjoyed touring for Go, and I'm sure that, plus the new soundtrack, might even help build up the Sigur Ros fanbase for the next tour. I'll be seeing 'em for the first time if they do. I'd SO be willing to drive 3+ hours to see this band.

At 2:27 there's a build up I really like, but then the melody just vanishes and never comes back to something I enjoy, which is disappointing. Looking at the track listing, with only 8 songs, one would imagine the songs are long, which is something that seems like a good sign.

Fair enough, I just think it's like samskeyti where it'll tie in with the rest. No drumming, so Orri wouldn't have much to do but they still do the tracks like that live so no biggie there. I just dig the little nuances, the withering strings, the light backing vocals that start around 1:15. I'm a fanboy, I know.

I got mine on some blog after googling in the band and album name followed by "zip." I can't tell ya where exactly 'cause I got it and had to jet for a trip. At least I'm pretty sure it's not that low in quality (128). If it's the same as yours then we may have different definitions of what is horrendous.

In any case I am not impressed by the album. I also feel like they literally could've whipped it up in a month, if they had to.

I'll spin again, but I just may be over the band.

Edit: Yeah, I can't see myself buying this record, a first with Sigur Ros for me.

I entered in to buy 3 tickets, it said I had them, then after entering my credit card info, it said "processing, do not hit refresh or back on your browser." It hung there for 8 fucking minutes, at which point my priority hold on the tickets expired and I was sent back to their home page.

Great show, Ágćtis byrjun heavy. The public was quiet when the show needed to be quiet (ie. Vaka). I was actually really surprised at how well behaved was the audience. And then the crowd went wild in between songs, they were really into the show. So glad to hear Olsen Olsen. Sound is so rich right now, with 11 people onstage. Not a lot of new songs, only 3. A bit surprising, as this is a tour in support of the new record. All in all a great evening.

08-10-2012, 01:59 AM
Never underestimate a Sigur Ros crowd, dude. Both times I've seen them and the one time I saw Jonsi's solo show, you could hear a pin drop. Hell, even at Lollapalooza last weekend, everyone who saw them straight up forgot it was a festival and at 4 in the afternoon. I was way up front and everyone up there treated it as if it was a theater show and not a festival, and I had friends who were way in the back say it was just as quiet back there. I've never heard 50,000+ people be so respecting and quiet. It was amazing.

ImTheWiseJanitor
08-10-2012, 03:38 AM
I'll never forget seeing Jonsi's solo shows. I've never seen a crowd so tame and attentive and respectful to the performer in my entire life. Nobody even clapped until instruments were put down, but when they did applaud, it was one HELL of an applause.

Jinsai
08-13-2012, 05:04 AM
Wow... the show tonight at the Hollywood Forever cemetery was incredibly epic. They set up guitar amps, littered alongside the gravestones on the entryway playing high pitched ambient music. One of the amps was playing back recited stories that sounded like people reminiscing about dead loved ones, along with what sounded like tragic stories about the experience of loss. Some of it sounded like it was read from an obituary clipping, or a speech someone had prepared for a funeral. It was hard to tell because, even though we lingered for a bit near that amp, it was often drowned out by the ambient hum of the other amps (and the opening band (whose name I don't recall)). It was unreal.

The band played a perfect, immaculate set. For at least half of the show I was lying down in the grass, staring at the stars, watching the stage from my peripheral.

One of the best shows ever, and by far the greatest thing I've seen happen in the cemetery, which was already my favorite "venue" in los angeles. I'm almost a little sad that I'm pretty sure I'll never see anything quite like that again.

richardp

Yeah, the Hollywood Forever cemetery is a really amazing place to see a concert. I go to the movie screenings there too. Fun stuff... you camp out, have a picnic, bring a bottle of wine, it's a pretty unique experience. I saw The Flaming Lips there, and it was fun.

Still, Sigur Ros owned it in a way, and I can't imagine someone topping what they did.

Here's a pic from part of the amp setup on the entryway...

heard Svefn g Englar and the Nothing song the other day, forgot how beautiful and moving some of this groups stuff was.

Those tracks sound sort of like an Icelandic Radiohead and i hear a little bit of Shoegaze-iness in there too.
For some reason i always exptected this group to be a bit too challenging to get into, which is probably why never bothered listening to their LP's only full album ever heard by this group whole way through is Agaetis Bryrjun. Which i loved.

What album by theirs would people recommend as their best other than the one mentioned above, want to get into them more, i want to hear some of their more conventional guitar based recordings.

You'd be surprised. I was fully expecting a fairly low attendance for their mid-day Lollapalooza set this year, and it ended up being bigger than Jack White's crowd, from what I'm told.

Point being, people love the shit out of Sigur Ros.

I did see Jonsi in St. Louis and Chicago in 2010 when he was doing his "Go" solo tour, even took my Mom with me both times and she's really into his music now because of that incredible show. Without a doubt, one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

So Tim Hecker is opening for the US Shows ! Wow : )

Sounds likes it's only on a handful of east coast dates :(

Oneohtrix Point Never is playing the SF date. That won't be a bad opener though. Why can't it be both of them and maybe they can do a collab set too from last years album?

Fuck! I haven't seen a single promo until earlier today, just some random ad on Facebook saying "Want a chance to win tickets to Sigur Ros at the Starlight?" HELL YES I DO.

Are you sure they sold out? I went through part of the ticket ordering process to see what seats were still available, and the closest I got was orchestra row E. If there's aaanything left by payday, I'm buying it up. I don't care if they're lawn seats. The Starlight's a decent-sized place.

Did you get tickets?? If so, have an awesome time.

these two songs sound really really good! was a bit let down by valtari, sure a nice album, but I missed the catchy moments of the other albums.

strangely, the new songs remind me most of hún jörđ off the "von" album which was also done without kjartan. btw, hún jörđ is featured in a recent trailer for game of thrones:

I'm a little disappointed that they canceled plans for a limited edition release -- I'd been holding out on the preorder for that. Oh well.

This song is so good. Kveikur has so much potential to be my favorite album of the year.

Oh and they said they canceled the deluxe edition in favor of an expanded vinyl edition with a bonus 10". But I'm guessing that 10" will just be the two instrumental tracks from the Brennisteinn EP, and it'll probably play from the inside out.

I saw Sigur Ros a month ago in Phoenix, and all I can say is WOW! Their live performance was a fusion of crisp vocals, unbelievable instrumentals, and a hypnotizing light show that captured my mind and especially my heart. Similar to How to Destroy Angels, they too played behind a translucent screen which projected abstract images. The whole crowd stood silent, gazing in awe until the music built up and the screen finally flitted down, revealing the musicians. When that happened, man, the whole audience just snapped out of a daze and went crazy! It was a transcendental symbiosis that I will never forget.

I was at the show and you're right. I was headbanging as if my life depended on it during Popplagio. I've seen them three times now, every time closing with Popplagio and this was the best rendition out of the three. I thought the show was a bit too short but not a big deal. I wish they would had played more of Med Sud and Valtari (or different songs, "Festival" is not particularly my favorite on that album). Excellent sound...crystal clear.

On my first listen, it's obviously a much more bouncey and lively record than Valtari was last year but as far as people comparing it to their best since Takk...I'd have to disagree with that. Maybe it's just not catching me at the moment but I don't even think it's as good of a full listen as Međ Suđ Í Eyrum Viđ Spilum Endalaust...which people seem to not care for that record and I've always loved that one.

I'll need to revisit it again perhaps. It's good but I wouldn't call it great or anything.

richardp
06-09-2013, 05:10 PM
So glad I bitched about it not leaking yesterday, forcing the universe to actually leak it.

I just finished my first listen and I already immediately love it. I would definitely say that it's probably their best since Takk.. Med Sud just felt like a lazy halfassed attempt. It felt like a boring version of Jonsi's solo album (which I absolutely loved). I get they were trying to change their sound, but I think Kveikur's change is the sound they needed to switch to all along. It's absolutely insane hearing, dare I say, dance beats on this album. It's by far the most modern sounding album that Sigur Ros has ever made.

As far as I know, tonight was the first it's leaked. Either way, it's a great record. I liked the last 2 albums well enough, but they didn't capture the magic that I felt Takk and all the albums before had. This kinda has it, but it will take time to tell. Great album either way.

Re: the Kveikur leak, to borrow a comment from the Came Back Haunted thread:

All I can seem to find is the dance remix. Where the original version of the song?

No, really, I'm super into this album. Hrafntinna is especially gorgeous! I was a little afraid that the title track would be a disappointment after hearing it in the live setting first (it sounded so massive, and I felt the TV appearances really didn't do it justice), but it turns out I shouldn't have worried.

Also, I am all over that Auditorium Theatre date! I'm wondering if it's worth it to go out to IN as well, but none of my friends would be interested in going with, so probably not...

that link is slightly wrong, Jonsi did it on acoustic guitar (and georg was on acoustic bass) . and the piano player did have a light, though less than the three.
they also did svefn-g-englar in the encore.

the gig was maybe the best i've seen them? Jonsis voice wasn't always it's best, but it didn't stop it being amazing.

they did AB in Brighton the night before as well, though I don't know if it was acoustic.

“every time you go on tour you want it to be different…and every time it is, usually because you have a new album you want to play people. and that can be fun, because you have to work out how to recreate all the complicated stuff you did in the studio for the stage. but there was a time when things were the other way round, when we worked stuff out on the road, and trying to capture lightning in a bottle was a problem for the studio later on. this time, in addition to playing songs you know, we wanted to remember the seat-of-your-pants feeling experienced in the wake of, ágćtis byrjun, when for two years we formed and re-formed the songs that would go on to be the ( ) album, live in front of people, night after night. with this in mind, we are pleased to announce that we are playing festivals next summer in the spirit of adventure. all we can say right now is it’s going to be different, with new unreleased songs, a new show and maybe some other *new* things. beyond that, we can only ask you to trust us on this one.”

I'm listening to Valtari right now, I didn't use to care for this record that much, one of my least favorite actually, BUT with my new Yamaha system (two speakers and a woofer) at full volume, on a rainy and cold day, it is AMAZING. The pounding bass of the woofer makes all the difference, it's like a discovered a new album. Give another chance to Valtari if you dismissed it like me.

Sigur Ros - North American Tour

sigur rós have announced an upcoming north american tour this fall. for the first time in their career the band will be touring without a support act, instead offering the audience two sets (+ intermission) starting from 8:30pm sharp at each show.
the month long run is comprised primarily of theater shows, marking the band’s most intimate tour in a decade. in keeping with the scale of the venues, the group will be performing without the string and brass sections that have been characteristic of recent performances, opting instead to focus on the core unit of the band itself. the shows will give the group a chance to road test new music, the first time since the tour leading up to the acclaimed ( ) album in 2002 that the band has performed new material ahead of album recording sessions. alongside this experimentation played out in public, the band is also planning on attempting new interpretations of old songs that haven’t been played in a very long time.
though the scale of the venues and band will be reduced, the live production will be characteristically stunning, designed again by the team behind their previous knights of illumination award-winning tour

Pair of front row on the floor! Took the Besta seats which ended up being $149 cdn each, so hopefully I can ebay one of the two signed books we get to recoup some of that lol. Apparently even with the presale if you chose normal seats it was gone in a second due to bots/scalpers. Ugh.

Nice. I went regular, but managed to snag a pair at a great, nearby venue. Only 5 - 6 rows back. Super stoked.

Pretty sure it's literally just the three of the them. From the looks of their Instagram posts today, their new stage design looks like a mashup of the With Teeth Amphitheater tour and the HTDA tour.

Honestly, they're all good. But if I had to pick one I'd start with Ágćtis byrjun

saw them at Primavera Sound in Barcelona last Sunday. First time seeing them since Bonnaroo 2008. They were excellent and the crowd was SO well-behaved on the quiet parts, which I was impressed with considering it was midnight and everyone had been drinking all day. It is just the 3 of them on stage, Jonsi's voice is showing no signs of aging (dude's 41 now), and oooooh man does their stage show resemble NIN at times (although I feel like who doesn't at this point). They ended with an epic rendition of Popplagiđ. here's my ok quality clips of Festival & Popplagiđ:

Saw them on treasure island in San Francisco a couple days ago and it was very good. The mood was super chill, there was wind and rain, which really enhanced the experience. I believe I heard 2 of their newer songs and they sound more like the older stuff, which was surprising. In the beginning they stood in a small circle and were looking at each other while playing. The stage was visually stunning, it was set up to look like the lights we 3D. The show was an emotional experience, and at times gave me goosebumps.

Those variants are a thing of beauty. Really excited for this one, especially since it's produced by A.G. Cook.

I still adore "Go", but it's hard to listen to that album now. His 2010 show at the Vic Theatre in Chicago was the first show my Mom and I saw together of something that I was really into and it just brings back a lot of memories of that trip. She passed this year nearly almost around the same time as the show a decade ago and it's hard for me to be in that head space and not get sad missing her.

First listen though of Shiver and I really dig it...there are a few tracks that sort of go for the vibe he was going for a bit too much (see Salt Licorice above) but Cannibal is still of course amazing, Wildeye starts off a bit hectic but really fleshes out nicely. A few very SR-esque mellower tracks in the middle and it finishes off strong.

To be honest, I feel there are only a few parts here and there that resemble Go, or SR at all...the middle of the album is where that mostly happens. Also, for me anyways, that's actually the stuff on the album (up to and including Salt Licorice) that is the least memorable too. Nothing bad about it, but a few of the more orchestral, mellower SR-esque tracks like Sumario and Korall...they just sort of meander a bit and I can't recall much about them off the top of my head. The beginning and end of the album is where it really shines for me.

It's definitely different though, for what it's worth lol. Oh and yes, there are scenes from ORM in Heima indeed.

I was reading the Sigur Ros reddit and I didn't know that Orri was not the original drummer, someone else, Agust (forgot his last name) drummed in Von and AB. And someone else in that Reddit mentioned the drummer for the first Jonsi solo tour, yeah, he was quite good as well.

I went to see them about three weeks ago, in Stanford. The weirdest thing happened to me during the show: we got to our seats kinda late, but before the show started. We walked through our whole row without finding our seats, and then realized that someone else had taken our seats, so we asked them to move and the people did not have any trouble moving to their seats. During all this we realized this was a big group of people, which included the people in our seats, and it seemed like they were Icelandic. Anyways, the show starts and the sound is PERFECT. Just PERFECT. And we had amazing seats, we were like 7th row, almost dead center. They start with a lot of () and Takk... songs. Halfway through the show Jónsi says: "by the way the President is here...(pause)...the President of Iceland, that is". And the guy to my left me shyly lifts his hand. I ask my wife to google "President of Iceland" because it'd be too obvious if I was googling the guy right next to me. She says "it very much looks like him". The show finishes, the band gets a huge standing ovation, and someone in the band makes eye contact with the guy next to me. So, once the band leaves the stage and I turn to this guy and ask him if he is the President of Iceland, and he said "yeah, I am" (Guđni Th. Jóhannesson (https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ALiCzsan3QEl_Vc35wWKiL9ydHLdPUkuyA:16 53868026775&q=Gu%C3%B0ni+Th.+J%C3%B3hannesson&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLVT9c3NEzOs6jIyDYqfMRowS3w 8sc9YSn9SWtOXmPU5OIKzsgvd80rySypFJLmYoOyBKX4uVB18i xiFXcvPbwhL1MhJENPwevw5ozEvLzU4uL8PADma5GUZgAAAA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiG1PbB8oX4AhVUIzQIHamjDpMQzIcDKAB6BAgnE AE)). We tell him that we've both been to Iceland and we like their country very much. He said they are really happy with Sigur Rós, they are perfect ambassadors to the country. We asked him to take a picture with us and he sure did! Nicest guy. He was rocking out to Popplagio by the way. I started following him on Twitter and he was in the Bay Area to talk to some of the IT companies here (Apple, Google, etc.) to see how they could contribute to save the Icelandic language (apparently less people speak it nowadays, than before). This is a story for the grandchildren, if I ever have them. Granted, in Iceland the head of state is the Prime Minister, the President is more of a PR type person, but still, I can say that I've rocked out next to a word leader.

Show was amazing. The only complaint I have is that I think they played 4 or 5 less songs in Stanford than the other stops in the tour, it must have been a University curfew. They only played one new song, as opposed to the 3-4 new songs they were playing. The one I heard sounded fantastic, very atmospheric, and evoked Valtari a bit. Definitely excited for the future of this band. Again, a Takk...and () heavy set, but all their other albums were represented (except for Von). The venue was great, it was an outdoor theater, no roof, in the middle of the University, lots of trees around the venue. At the show I bought the Agaetis Byrjun 20th Anniversary CD set, it is lovely and has some cool liner notes.

Grabbed a ticket for Minneapolis today. After missing the last US run, I simply couldn’t let myself miss this. So fucking stoked.

If anyone hasn’t seen them before, and is on the fence even a little bit, I cannot stress enough that you owe it to yourself to do anything you can to see one of these shows. It WILL be worth it.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger for the Beacon Theater show.

I actually advise against it, unless it's your hometown and you know what the audience is like. Especially if you're in the UK. The SR audience there is as shitty as it gets.

Expect a wave of smartphones in the air, blocking all your views so that you can only see them play through a wave of fucking phone screens.

If you're in Japan (where the audience actually puts their phone down and not talk through the performance) or have a chance to see them in a relatively small venue, I'd say go for it.
But even then, the live experience is not as magical as some claims to be.

Okay, well...I guess I'd advise never going to any live shows anywhere, I guess. In case the audience might be bad. Can't take that chance. Unless it's in Japan, or in a small venue, or in your hometown.

I plan on going and having a great time, and I still recommend it to others. Sorry.

I've seen Sigur Ros 4 times, each time on different tour and in different city. Not once cell phones were a problem, even compared to other bands I've seen in the same venues/festivals.

It's worth going even if they just come out, play Pop Song and go away.

The new songs they played on 2022 were perhaps the closest to the classic AG/()/Takk-eras material. Although I loved the direction they took on Kveikur.

I saw them in Stanford, CA last year, and even though the band did not have a no cellphones policy (like Tool), I barely saw any phones during the show. The audience was really quiet (maybe it helped that there were seats in an outdoor amphitheater?) but the ovation they got after each song was massive. And the sound was just gorgeous. I'm planning on getting tickets for their Berkeley show.

I’m undecided, and might wait until closer to the show, but I might try making the trip to LA for the final NA show. Never been that far west before, and it’d be a great excuse to go on a road trip. I’m gonna have to see what other shows get announced for this summer first, though.

I think I read on Reddit that these are the only North America shows for the year, and the only shows that will have an orchestra (Darren posted this, he works with Sigur Ros). So if I were you I'd be getting tickets!

If you get the tickets for the Berkeley show I'll buy you a beer before the show. It's a beautiful venue! Saw NIN there last year and it was awesome.

Good to hear you had a great time.

I had the worst concert experience of my life in one of the SR show I attended (UK), so I'm just sharing my opinion. It's up for others to decide.
My experience so far with the 4 SR shows that I've attended is that sometimes the audience gives the respect the music deserves (Japan), but more often than not they don't.

So will I attend another unseated, outdoor/festival Sigur Ros show? Probably not.
