Recently released album 'Bad As Me' is definitely a return to form for Mr. Waits. While I of course loved 'Real Gone' from 2004, I find this album to be more accessible and similar to 'Mule Variations' and the awesome 'Alice' 'Blood Money' pair that dropped shortly after. I'm dying to see if he'll announce some tour dates, saw him here in 2004 for both shows and I'm dying to see just one more show!!! If he comes to Seattle or Portland even I'm effin' going...

I hope his tour doesn't stick to the south again like PESKAJUMBA did. It was a cool idea, but not for us Minnesota folk.

Bad As Me was awesome, definitely one of the best albums of the year and worth the wait. Glitter and Doom was a good live album, I just wish they put in the "Tom Tales" within the tracks and not just a separate disc.

Given the last few months I've had "Walk Away" on nearly constant repeat for the last couple weeks. At times i think it's not the best decision but it sure hits the spot.

Great great album. I'm not sure where I read it but someone said Bad As Me sounds like a Tom Waits greatest hits album but with all new songs. I kind of agree. Every song is kinda different and the album spans all the styles of music he's done over the years. Gotta say I'm very impressed and can't wait for the tour.

So I'm trying to get into Tom Waits as I never really understood the appeal, so what would be a good way to start with his discography? So far the only song that I really like is "goin' out west" (reminds me some Beasts of Bourbon) so songs/records/bootlegs similar to that could get me hooked. any recommendations? :)

The 'Mule Variations' album is a good start, as is 'Alice' though that's his appeal to many...he kept his style but really changed the beat from album to album. Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers, and Bastards is a good compilation too. Hell, his first album 'Closing Time' is fantastic too...you can't go wrong. New album 'Bad As Me' is akin to Mule Variations too. LoL I'll ramble on about Tom for hours...

Thanks! I was searching for some more guitar driven stuff (should have been more precise I guess), but I just borrowed "mule varations", "rain dogs" and the "glitter & doom" live CD, so I'll start from here since I really want to get into this guy as I've seen and heard some wicked interviews with him, but most people around me that claim themselves to be huge Waits fans are quite the people I could do without so I never really gave im a chance in the first place :P

Tom Waits narrates a short film about John Baldessari. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU7V4GyEuXA&feature=player_embedded)

From my days in graphic design school, I've always loved Baldessari's work. Hearing Tom narrate a quick video about him was super cool to watch.

The Orphans collection is probably one of the greatest collection of works I have ever heard.

Seconded; I used the "Children's Story" as an audition piece.

dlb, it's a bit late for my input now, but if you're looking to ease into Waits from any lyrical sort of standpoint, I'd go with Small Change or Blue Valentine in a heartbeat. Easily his best of the first few, more stylistically understated albums. Put out before too much of the experimentation came about, and really great to sort of break the ice with the Waits characteristics. After that, Heartattack and Vine followed by something really out there. Bone Machine, definitely a good choice, though if you want more of a transitional experience, go with Swordfishtrombones and then anything following. Mule Variations, sure. Waits isn't a terribly guitar-driven performer; not sure what to tell you there.

I just got into Tom a few weeks ago when I first heard "Heart Attack & Vine" and fell in love with it.
Then I got Bone Machine when I saw it had "Goin' out West" which I already knew from the Queens of The Stone Age cover and I saw it had Clay Lespool playing bass on it.
Next I'm gunna give Mule Variations a listen. And I love that videos he just released and am excited to see what he does in the future.
What album should I check out after Mule??

I got the album Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards on CD for Christmas this year (2012). Before i really got in to Waits heavily i thought this was just a Greatest Hits collection or something and quite honestly i avoided it without really doing proper research about it, haha boy was i way off.... i realize now that a lot of these are b-sides, soundtrack numbers and previously unreleased stuff. It's quite the incredible opus to go through and I'm loving every minute of it.

Really great collection!

Does anyone know exactly why Tom's vocals took such a shift from his first couple albums Closing Time and The Heart of Saturday Night to the gravel of Small Change?

It's just so crazy how night and day it is. Not that i don't love gravelly Waits too and generally that's what he's most known for in regards to his music but it's just such a difference in singing style. Was it the smoking and drinking or some throat ailment and what not? or was it just his choice in direction to go?

Any essential interviews i need to check out?

He has discussed it numerous times in print and probably more than a few times on tv, but as always it's usually drenched in jest. If I recall correctly, he told Letterman (or someone else?) that he did it by routinely screaming as loudly as he could in to his pillow. Truth is, I think of course the booze and smokes (and age) are a factor, but it's probably just a stylistic decision. On his next album The Heart of Saturday Night, he touched upon the more gravel-voiced type stuff and probably just got more and more in to it. He kept pushing it more and more as you get in to his Island albums, Bone Machine, etc. etc. He still has the softer songs where he touches upon the less gravelly style, but I think by now it's just the right fit for him.

I love both, I adore him now but still love going back to Closing Time and hearing what I always think of as Tom Waits hangin' out with early Billy Joel.

It's funny when you're getting into an artist that has been around for so long and you realize you've heard some form of their music in some way.

Hip Hop is obviously notorious for it's sampling of other music.

Recognize the beat 30 seconds in?

I would've heard this in 2006 before i even knew who Tom Waits was, cool figuring out that this was a piano tune sampled from Ice Cream Man after all this time.

i ended up pre-ordering blood money/alice/real gone from amazon (although alice was listed as "temporarily out of stock") because they were so much cheaper. i thought we always knew real gone was going to be "remixed" (which i correctly assumed just meant they did a better/different mix of the album rather than a remix album haha) as that was how it was listed on his store website (remixed & remastered)

Anyone know what the likelihood of getting some of the older albums reissued on vinyl is, in terms of record label hold ups, licensing, etc.? While it's nice that they reissued the albums they did, none of them were exactly difficult to get prior, while some of the older ones are very rare.

Happy I'll now take the plunge on Nighthawks and Small Change. Two favourites but I never see them around and I end up buying other stuff when I use Discogs.

Gotta wonder if some of the longer albums will get expanded into double LPs. It gets really bad around the Rain Dogs period, which itself has a 28-minute side B. Assuming Waits had the remastering done to improve on things, maybe it'll happen.

finally listening to this re-mixed and remastered vinyl and it sounds great. the new horns in "hoist that rag" really threw me off at first, but i think i like them? it's so odd to have a new element to a song you've been listening to for almost 15 years but the generally less muffled sound of the whole album is fantastic.

I've ordered/preordered every reissue thus far, so will definitely be trying for these on top of the set when it releases later this year.

And Bawlers is the best of the three albums lol. Case in point...

One of my top 3 fav Tom songs...hands down.

So, got shipping notification of my latest order of Tom Waits remasters...listening to the remaster of 'Closing Time' right now and holy shit. It's a significant increase in sound quality and clarity. I'm blown away.

Wait, what?

Sorry if it was written poorly, haha. RSD next month will have the Orphans albums separately apparently, while the official store (https://www.kingsroadmerch.com/tom-waits/) still has it listed as 'Coming 2018'. Very well could mean the RSD releases, but hoping it means the full set. Now that I think of it, with the original set I have (with book and case), the individual releases, and remasters it'll mean I'll have 3 copies of it but oh well lol.

Official store (https://www.kingsroadmerch.com/tom-waits/) now has the Elektra remastered albums, special clear vinyl editions, as well as bundles. There goes another few hundred bucks...

Grain of salt time...

Tom is supposedly working on a new album, according to a few sources.

That is all.

Suggested retail prices for RSD are here: https://thefutureheart.com/2018/04/19/rsd-prices-record-store-day-cost-genre-rock-hip-hop-indie-jazz-punk-metal-list-vinyl-lp-official-rumor-full-rsd18-rsd2018-disc-set-ep-recordstore-waits-grateful-wilco-allman-elvis/

Each TW record will be $33, equaling just under $100 for all 3 (before taxes). Someone help me decide whether to jump on it or just wait for the wide-release down the line.

OH YEAH!

That album has some damn good songs on it too, should have recognized that one.

Ok so it's basically a cover song, yeah that threw me off listening to this other dude narrating it. I guess that came from this collaboration project called Stories for Ways & Means which is a book with special art.

For those interested, Iggy Pop hosts a Sunday music show on BBC6 Music, and it's usually absolutely brilliant. It took an even greater turn last Sunday when he had Tom on for 2 hours, they chatted and played a bunch of music and it was a very enjoyable couple of hours.

I haven't watched that video yet, but it reminded me of this: did they talk about it?
