Once again, I'm astonished that there isnt an thread about her.

I just recieved my vinyl of Versions. the album where she redoes some of her best songs with the great JG Thirlwell (FOETUS) and a string quartet. its really beautiful

If you dont know her I suggest you start with tracks like

Vessel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY9WUZZrTpw

and Hikikomori

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZRxgtpn1fY

and Seekir
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHRFqjGCUvU

Here she performs at the Guggenheim with JG Thirlwell.

i have my reservations and generally feel pretty meh about her overall (i am very, very picky when it comes to new gothlings). i could take or leave most of her material, but i LOVED 'night':

I hear ya about the gothling thing. I haven't been a fan of the goth thing for 10 years. At least.

Nika is pretty interesting tho. She doesn't attempt to identify with the "goth scene" per say. Because that scene is corny as hell.

Her music seems real to me and appeals to the side of me that goth appealed to back when I was a youngster.

She's dark and original. And doesn't walk around in black talking about how shitty everything is. It seems more like she is just a fan of the same stuff I was growing up. And obviously that translates into her music.

It took me a while to totally accept her. I think only because I didn't totally understand her. I knew I liked SOME of her stuff. But now I seek out her music wherever I go.

I'm going to see her and thirlwell in sf in September at the palace of fine arts. Super excited about that.

Seeing her with Thirlwell at Mountain Oasis, but hadn't had a chance to check anything out yet. Just a minute or so into that first video and I'm already pretty sure I'm going to have to check out the rest of her stuff. Thanks for kicking the thread off well, dude.

No problemo. I am really hoping a live album or even better a Live video of this tour surfaces.

I was just telling my dad about this show this morning, and telling him how I remember him and mom yelling at me "WTF are you listening to??" When I was listening to the FOETUS GASH album. Told about how he's a composer now, and I'm going to see him and Zola at Palace of Fine Arts in SF.

We were cracking up.

Anyone into this wonderful artist?

She is five albums into her career and has also released a split album with Burial Hex, as well as a joint album with LA Vampires. Nika has also collaborated with Former Ghosts, Fucked Up, M83 and Orbital among others.

Zola Jesus dj set on KEXP last week, stream here https://www.mixcloud.com/kexp/kexp-presents-midnight-in-a-perfect-world-with-zola-jesus/

Nika Roza Danilova, a.k.a. Zola Jesus, is a Wisconsin native and recent Pacific Northwest transplant that has released stunning operatic albums of dark, cinematic electro-pop on the Sacred Bones and Mute record labels over the past five years. She stopped by KEXP to piece together a rare DJ set for Midnight In A Perfect World and it's a thrilling, adventurous, visceral mix that boldly showcases her love of power electronics, punishing techno, enveloping noise, and classical opera in a seamless yet unpredictable fashion.

Seeing her for the first time in September.

So this is a serious question: Is Jesus pronounced like the Christian savior or with a Hispanic pronounciation? I've never heard anyone say her stage name aloud and haven't done too much searching online to figure out the answer.

Show last night in LA was so, so good even though she only got a 40 minute set. Sadly, the crowd sucked so I am hoping those of you seeing future shows on this tour have a better experience with Alice Glass fans than I did. Right before she started Witness (and had just explained that it was for her uncle who attempted suicide) a guy in the crowd yelled "Show me your tits" to which she calmly responded "No I won't show you my tits" and went into the song. :/ I was so in shock that the only thing that came out of my mouth was a loud OH MY GOD and a girl behind me yelled "somebody punch that guy please". Un fucking real.

If the Sacramento headlining show wasn't the day before my husband's birthday I would definitely be driving up for it.

Got to hang out with Zeej in the afternoon before her show here last night (friend of mine interviewed her for his radio station) and she was really nice. She's so tiny! Couldn't be any taller than say, 5'2" or something...but that voice and stage presence. God damn...

Wow, that's fucking disgusting. And really strange if that guy's actually an Alice Glass fan, given the quite public abusive experiences she's dealt with during her time in Crystal Castles.

The Zedd remix (https://soundcloud.com/zolajesus/the-middle-yung-zeej-remix) where I believe the 'Yung Zeej' name officially begins is pretty remarkable, and has achieved more rotation in my listening than I think she may have intended. In as much 'Yung Zeej' means anything, hope it continues to free her to do things that she might not otherwise pursue.

I first heard a Zola Jesus track, Wiseblood (Johnny Jewel Remix), in the movie "Beautiful Boy." Wow, I was floored and went to buy her albums. I love her work; just, wow. I hope I get to see her perform live, in the near future.

Edit: Random thought, whenever I discover a new artist, whose work I enjoy, I just have this hopeful feeling. The older I get, the more I wonder if there will come a time when I no longer experience the discovery of a new artist because I won't be able to relate because old. I don't want to be one of those jaded oldsters, shaking my fist in the air screaming, "All new music is crap; back in my day, music was actually good!" Odd fear, I know, but, good music matters that much to me.

Hi
I'm not too interested in the t-shirts, but I'm eager to see what gets sold in future.

Yeah, the Patreon only tracks have been great so far.

I think i'll skip the new remix release with Johnny Jewel too, I thought they were quite dull. Really like the original track though.

Congratulations on seeing a NIKA set, you're lucky.

I can't recall Nika saying anything specific (if she did I missed it). I do recall her stating that the NIKA project is more about mood and subconscious. She has shared a couple of demos. One she described as a pre-cursor to the NIKA project, which sounded more ethereal than ZJ material? The other track was much darker with a driving rhythm and unintelligible lyrics.
Thrilling stuff really.

You should join her patreon if you can, it's well worth it imo. Enjoy the gig. Come back and tell us about it ;)

@Camille (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=2030) I’m back with a belated report. NIKA’s performance was definitely presented as a stream of consciousness, spontaneous event. The performance was small and intimate, probably about 100 people in the room. She did not use a mic and spent half of her time on a small stage and the other half walking around the room after the audience parted in a U shape to let her navigate. The only instruments she used were a drum, something that sounded like metal on wood (don’t know the name), and her voice. She was dressed in a diaphanous white dress with a nude body suit and she started her performance with her head covered in the fabric. NIKA started by saying unintelligible things while beating the drum slowly. Then yelled “yes, it’s what I wanted!” over and over. More yelling, wailing, sitting down on her heels and bending over onto the floor in the audience. Walked around the audience while wailing/chanting and holding an apple with a corer or some sort of skewer.

One section blended seamlessly into the next for about an hour. The audience was respectful. It was a cool experience in a unique setting.
