He had kind words to say about NIN as the song was finishing.

Also, someone on here pointed out that the live version may or may not feature a sample from The Downward Spiral. I can definitely hear that sound in the studio version (It pans from left to right ear each time you hear it). It does sound like that same sound from TDS. Thoughts?

About people calling ZL a piece of shit: let's cut him some slack, guys. Two reasons:

1- He does promote and preview stuff that no other major show in the world would. There's a reason why he has previewed tracks by the likes of NIN, Garbage, QOTSA and many others.

2- Find My Way is a 5+ minutes song. As a former radio journalist myself, I must say that you can get a lot of shit for playing stuff that is more than 4m30s longer. He spoke only what was necessary to promote the album and the track given the time he had. And the promotional stuff he said was probably demanded by Columbia or NIN's PR team.

Yes, they're very strict on it. If you watch TV without a license, you can get a fine of up to £2k and criminal charges, BBC likes people to stick to the guidelines so have all kinds of protection measures

He's just doing his job, but fuck him, right?

And never mind the fact that we've had perfectly acceptable live versions of this song already, well ahead of the album release, let alone this individual track "debut." Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful. Probably my favorite ambient/quiet track to come from TR in years. But we've had the song for a couple weeks, and we have less than a couple more weeks until the album release, AND a leak that's likely coming a week-ish ahead of THAT. Can't we just be thankful for what we've got and...I dunno....Cool our jets a little?

Zane's show won't load - every time I drag the bar to the 40 minute mark it restarts. So I'm listening to the first 40 minutes - actually listening. It is 1995.

There is a band called "Cerebral Ballsy." I don't know what to make of it. Apparently their second album is infinitely different from their first and it would be a real travesty if they ever repeated themselves. Cerebral Ballsy - raising the bar for us all.

You are 100% right about this, but wow, I can't believe people in here are so impatient and reactive that we have to apologize for Zane Lowe, A DJ, talking over a track ON THE RADIO. Really?

when the fuck did zane lowe become the official NIN spokesperson? the guy is an utter tool....in other news, the song is sick

Dude's been doing this for years now, hasn't he? I'm speaking in the context of promoting Trent's shit. He's good at hyping Trent up, and that's really all that matters.

I've never understood all the hate for the dude. So he talked over the debut of the song - it is literally the same as the live version, but with less emphatic vocals and more audible layering at the end. We'll all be hearing it in less than a week anyway, officially or unofficially. No big deal. Not to mention talking over music is just what DJs have done since the beginning of radio, new songs or not.

I still think TR should go on Howard Stern..Stern has always said nice things about NIN and the music interviews he has done the past year are WAY more in depth and intelligent than the Stern of years ago

Is it just me or are the layered synths a little... up front? I'm not sure I like how they seem to bully out the percussion and piano, especially toward the end. That said, this song has yet to really grab me. It's not a skipper, or anything, but I'm not trolling when I say that I had a stronger, more visceral reaction to Everything.

Too fucking right. I'm slowly absorbing all the parallels to the themes in TDS in what I've heard so far, and here we have almost supplication rather than rejection. Whoever said "I Would For You" and "In Two" might focus instead on finding comfort in love and family life as opposed to trying and failing in the embrace of a a whorish she-Reptile figure may have been dead on the money.

Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but I may never be able to listen to TDS the same way after this album drops.

This. A hundred times this. It's just a gut feeling, but it really feels like we'll be seeing a sort of revisiting/confrontation/acceptance in regards to the themes conveyed in TDS. Even if it's completely not that, I think I already have so many of those little perceptions in my mind that they'll probably stick to me anyway. These are exciting times!

If you don't have a decent pair of headphones you could be forgiven for thinking there isn't much difference between the studio and liver version but there is a lot more lurking in the background on the studio. Trent says that the album has a sparse style but all the tracks I've heard so far are really dense and multi layered I'm finding new things with each listen.

Does anyone have any interpretations of the lyrics?

On my first, second and third lesson only one thought popped up in my head - Josh Wink. I think that this is a song about how Trent has constantly been trying to Find His Way in the music industry and how he has never been able to live up to his goal. What is his goal you ask? Simple, to become 1/10 the musician that Josh Wink is. Every time he tries to do so, he fails - but he gets up and keeps on trying.

Also, someone on here pointed out that the live version may or may not feature a sample from The Downward Spiral. I can definitely hear that sound in the studio version (It pans from left to right ear each time you hear it). It does sound like that same sound from TDS. Thoughts?

The big surprise here is that's not just Zane's banter, that is actually on the track! ;-)
(j/k other than it being his style in general, he's just watermarking the track, since it is his exclusive)

As for the song itself:

1. I think it's just lovely
2. So glad to hear that my favorite parts of the live renditions are intact and actually enhanced in this studio version (+MMR!)
3. I was totally right that he's saying "oh dear lord, hear my prayer" - and even though I was expecting this, I was surprised with how clearly it is stated here (as opposed to how it was buried/whispered in the live versions)

Not that Bose is terrible, but for the price you can do better. Back in the day, the Triports ($149) had approximately equal sound quality to the Sennheiser HD201 ($25 at the most). I'd suggest looking at headfi.org for better answers on what's good at $100 these days. And I'm sorry about your wallet.

Get the Sennheiser HD 280s.
Not only do they sound great, they do a excellent job of blocking out noise.
If background noise isn't really an issue for you (maybe these are for your quiet listening place?) then AudioTechnica has some comparable ones. The 580 or 850 or something. I think they actually sound better than the Sennies, but they don't do nearly as much to block out noise.

Um, if you are going to premiere a song, have some respect.

Talking like an idiot during each song is not a prerequisite of being a DJ. Talking like an idiot maybe, but not during the world premiere of a song. And fuck everyone who thinks it's justified as being a watermark to protect sales. If that's what TR was really thinking then have some integrity and don't release the song until people can buy it.

I contemplated not listening to this one and waiting... But considering I've already heard it live a million times, it was justifyable.
Immediately put the live version on right after...

The studio one is definatly the better of the two, which is funny as I feel the opposite towards Copy Of A, live is better.

This song is definatly growing on me. Absolutly HATED it when I first heard it live at Lollapalooza. Thought it was the most boring thing in the world, but after multiple listened over the last month, it always gets better.

I read an interview where he said during the recording of the album it almost felt like these were demo versions of an unfinished product because they were so damn minimal, so they er-recorded everything with actual instruments instead only to scrap it all and say "yeah, the direction we originally took was right" I can definatly see what he means by this comment. This and Copy Of A almost seem like they sould belong on a "demos and remixes" CD. The vocals in particular seem quite weak, very echoy, like they aren't mixed properly...

Maybe it will be different on the CD.But the vocals seem very faint in this and Copy of A.

Beautiful, haunting and warm and comforting at the same time. This resonated with me, it stirred all kind of emotions and memories - something that didn't happen with the live version (which was actually one of my favourite parts of the show).

Just one more thing, I thought it was common for radio presenters to talk over the intro/outro of songs, why are someone you acting like this is the worst thing ever? Or have forgotten radio works...or perhaps never listened to the radio in your life?

Odd...

The question I would ask is have you heard the better Depeche Mode albums? Have you listened to Violator or Music for the Masses?

I don't mean to be antagonistic in any way, but if this is the first time you've been exposed to depeche mode, listen to Violator.

Violator i've heard a few times. but only causally in a 'it's one of 1500 songs on my mp3 player' kind of way, so haven't really absorbed it. Really do need to sit down and give it a proper listen! Obviously I know the singles from it though. I was in at the beginning with them, but quickly tired of them as I discovered heavier stuff. Tastes are mellowing though again as I get older!

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this already, but something about this song screams Bat for Lashes, especially her most recent album "The Haunted Man." I think it's the combo of drum-machines, ambient distant droning, and quiet piano. Really, it's more likely she was influenced by NIN, but the parallel is definitely there.

If you like Ultra, give Playing the Angel a listen.

Hell, I'd suggest giving everything after and including Music for the Masses a listen. Some of it is kind of hit or miss, but that's when they started coming into their own. Like NIN, each of their albums is a bit different.

Does anyone know what he says at about 2:45? To me it sounds like "Please, I never meant to ____ " ??

Lord my path has gone astray
I'm just trying to find my way
Wandered here from far away
I'm just trying to find my way

You were never meant to see
All those things inside of me
Now that you have gone away
I'm just trying to find my way

Oh

I have made a great mistake
I pray the lord my soul to take
Ghosts of who I used to be
I can feel them come for me
Looks as though they're here to stay
I'm just trying to find my way

Oh

[???]

I have been to every place
I have been to everywhere
I'm just trying to find my way
Oh dear lord, hear my prayer

If you're going to sell a record, promote it in a way that's going to make people still want to buy it.

As if this will make any difference. By the time people can actually buy it, there will be complete un-dokneyified versions available free to download. In other words, people who wanted to avoid paying for it now, will still avoid paying for it when the songs are out officially.

Another textbook example of marketing "genius".

It's definitely a watermark (whether you like that or not), but not to protect sales, but to publicize Zane. This might come as a shock to you, but Zane Lowe is running a business, not a charitable organization (well, for all I know he might be running one of those too, but that's not the topic here). What would be the point of negotiating an exclusive if he doesn't get to use it to promote himself? And he's not stupid. He knows damn well that this will be ripped and put online and if he doesn't talk over any of it, nobody will know who got the exclusive which makes getting the exclusive pointless. Talking like an idiot is not a prerequisite for being on the internet either.

Everything wasn't an exclusive, so to speak, because the studio version was thrown out into the wild an hour later when it was dropped into our nin.com accounts. FMW, on the other hand, so far has been exclusive to that one airing of it.

I feel like a bunch of hardcore nin fans on a nin message board obsessively listening to (and bitching about) a radio premiere of a song are probably not the people who should be armchair-quarterbacking how to market and release a record

to add to my inevitable facepalm, am I the only person who doesn't think Zane Lowe is a total dick? He's a hyper guy, but he actually conducts pretty good interviews and tends to actually know what he's talking about most of the time. He does some research. Totally agree with your post here, especially the top part. I do find Zane a little annoying but he does a great job in promoting bands and he does have a genuine love for a lot of the bands he promotes. I'll say it again, getting angry about a DJ that talks over a part of a song is like getting angry that the sky is blue. It's radio, it's what they do.

Again, I refuse to spoil the album, so I've not listened, but an article says he spoke over the last 15 seconds. Of a 4min+ track!
Fucking wah wah wah. Grow a pair a just wait until you have the album.

Its the same whining as everyone saying 'PM me a link' for the previous tracks. Why don't you just buy the track from iTunes/amazon or better, buy the album from nin.com instead of being bitches and begging for a freebie.

it really annoyed me to see so many fair weather fans come out begging for tracks so they could avoid paying (supporting nin), just as it annoys me to see so many people bitching about Zane! He's the only DJ who's played ANY nin here in the uk, atkeast appreciate that.

None of the DJ's where I live do that, I honestly thought that fad died off in the late 80s/early 90s because they realized how annoying it was.

EDIT: They DO skip the intros of most tracks, or will talk up until the lyrics start though - but never, ever, ever on a premier or the first playing of a notable track.

Zane Lowe can be a little annoying it's true but his show is pretty solid. When you compare it with most radio programs around the world, it's definitely among the better ones. Jian Ghomeshi's interview with Trent on Q a few months ago was top notch in my opinion.

But going back to the song, it's just great. I've been listening to this in loop for a couple of weeks now and the studio version is even better! I'm surprised at the lyrics though. They seem more "Fragile"-like than "Happy guy" with wife and kids. I'm getting more and more curious about the album. Can't wait for it. It's going to be a very eclectic piece.

Zane did a decent job with promoting NIN, say whatever you want. Yes, he talked over it, so we couldn't have a perfect radio rip of the song instead of actually buying it, big fucking deal. Yes, he's hyper. I don't like hyper people. However, if you're gonna have someone work on the radio I think he shouldn't sound like a sleeping pill either.
