The most egregious example of this I can remember when they did this during the Pink Floyd reunion for Live Aid, smack in the middle of the Comfortably Numb guitar solo. I hucked a beer and I put a crack in my friends TV screen.

Say what you like about Zane, and I see you all are, but he's one of he most enthusiastic champions of the music he plays on the radio. He plays the stuff he likes, he's not got a playlist. When premiering tracks (as he frequently does like this) he's been known to play the tracks two or even three times. I don't think he'd get the exclusives if he didn't give a shit as much as he clearly does.
He does some great documentary content in this slot too, there's a brilliant one about Songs For The Deaf.

QFT. I am not the target demographic for Radio 1 but Zane is a good bloke who loves his music and has always been a supporter of NIN at a time when the BBC flat out ignores anything outside the mainstream. Tastes in DJing styles differ, but Zane has more than earned his stripes.

Whoa, those verses are easily the poppiest thing Trent has ever recorded. When his vocal first came in, I was taken aback. The vocal melody is so immediate, it's weird. The chorus is decidedly noisy and unpopy, though. Interesting track. I don't know how I totally feel about it yet. It will help to hear it in full quality.

So what happened, for those of us who couldn't listen in...

Zane asked what went wrong at Pukkelpop. Trent joked that they sucked, then went on to explain about the daytime lighting interfering with the light show, and that most of the fans were there for Eminem and not NIN. He did clarify that he likes Eminem. (All paraphrased, of course.)

Ok....so here's a long drawn out reasoning as to why I love this...

Is it poppy? You bet....but it reminds me of certain parts on other bands I love like My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr. It's got this optimistic tone to it but the rushing guitar chords and drums have a underlying almost anxiety to them. The whole song has this "I really went through some horrible shit, but ended up okay on the other side" vibe to it. For whatever reason...at work today, I was caught up in emotion listening to this. Maybe it's because I feel kind of the same way, at 26...although I haven't experienced "Everything"...I still feel like many positive and negatives have caught up with me. I'm unsure where I'm at in my life, but I know that I'm in a better place than I was 3 of even 10 years ago. Hearing Trent Reznor be a little more optimistic got me extremely emotional and I teared up a bit while listening to it. I feel like as fans we've gone through so much with Trent that listening to a new song in a new context like this...really pulled my heart strings for some reason.

Whew. Okay.

Anyway, I really like it. I can see why people won't....but that won't stop me from thinking how much I enjoy this song.

The best part of the show was the part where I got a shout out by Zane. Or maybe that was the worst part. I dunno.

Anyway here's how it goes:

"I LOVE THIS NEW NIN SONG!" "YOU'RE A TASTELESS MORON"
"I HATE THIS NEW NIN SONG!" "YOU'RE A TASTELESS MORON"
technically speaking we're all tasteless morons.

i'm loving it for similar reasons. it's the exact opposite of the brutal, heavy, and dark band that i discovered in 1993. of course the focus has changed several times over the years, but this one is a complete antithesis. it's not that there haven't been pop songs before (moments of the slip and with teeth aimed for this, too), but this one really exceeds in capturing a different, but just as effective sound. as a pop song, in line with the likes of u2 or new order's heyday, it's amazing.

while i've liked the previous songs just fine, this is the first i've found myself listening to repeatedly.

I'm going to have to listen to it in FLAC, and I'll want to read the lyrics. But at the moment I'm as shocked as anyone. And my gut reaction is a sort of dislike—the same sort of feeling I had for The Decemberists' The King Is Dead: This is just fine, but it's not what I come to this band for. Which is to say, I wouldn't go to Arby's and bitch about the broiled fish they served that day. I've never bought a bottle of scotch and complained it wasn't tequila, but I would be vaguely disappointed if I bought a bottle of scotch and found it only contained plain Irish whiskey. If y'all catch my drift. I'm confused and not as initially ecstatic as I was with "Copy of A." But I don't hate it.

EDIT: I should actually also mention here that, once I figured out what it was supposed to be, so to speak, I came to quite like The King Is Dead. The artist challenged me by doing something relatively unpredictable and once I caught up, it turned out to be something totally respectable even if it wasn't my personal favorite composition.

And, for whomever it was who said we heard this out of context of the album, I think that's probably a sensible thing to keep in mind. It might be worth noting that, assuming "The Eater of Dreams" and "Black Noise" are intro/outro instrumentals and everything else is a vocal track, this is the shortest song on the album, and in its dead center. I honestly don't see Trent releasing what would, in critical analysis terms, be called a comedy (i.e., Merchant of Venice is technically a comedy because everything ends just wonderfully even though it's kind of grisly and bleak in a number of places and doesn't smack of the Jim Carrey shit most people associate with the word "comedy"), I suspect this might be a wonderful contrapuntal eye of the storm type thing. I haven't heard "Disappointed," but sandwiched between something that sounds so positively upbeat as that and something more sour and lonely (which a song called "Satellite" could very well be), it might not be one's favorite Nine Inch Nails song, but it might serve a damned good purpose. Or I could be totally wrong. The song titles before "Everything" seem much more undeniably bleak than the ones after it. So, maybe it will be an LP that ends happily. Which in itself would be an interesting idea to close out the Nine Inch Nails career.

Of course, I'm going on nothing but pulled-from-ass speculation, a very basic idea of dramatic structure, what I know of the way Trent seems to like to structure things, and a number of single-word song titles here.

For all we know, maybe he wrote it as a big "fuck you" to Interscope for that Greatest Hits LP. Like "Cocksucker Blues." "Yeah, Interscope, I've got your new track right here, assholes. Enjoy it. The kids over at the Death Cab for Cutie camp said it was a bit too chipper." However, I doubt that. And suspect that, given a little while, I'll like it just fine. It may never be "And All That Could Have Been" in my book but, hell, I genuinely enjoy "Maybe Just Once" and "Purest Feeling." And it's neat to see Trent do something that's really ballsy considering his fanbase. An album with no guitars, or no synth, or no layers, or live drums might all be different, but none of them inherently defy pretty much everything his long-time devotees have come to see as sine qua non of Nine Inch Nails. Something earnest and possibly even optimistic is maybe the biggest risk he could take with the audience he's got.

Man, I have loved every HM track I've heard so far, and this is no exception. Different, yes, but isn't he always, and I would certainly expect a drastically different sound or two given how drastically different his life is now.

I remember Maynard saying something about having grown out of/moved on from some TOOL material, and that he saw this as vastly healthier than being stuck. Then again, I've seen plenty of musicians lose that "spark" I liked in their work once their personal lives got satisfying. So, personally, I'm delighted to hear the mood growth amid all the sonic growth of the other tracks. Square deal. Even more excited to hear the whole thing.

Okay, so I just listened to the full quality 320 MP3 Link that NIN sent out on the preorders on a pair of nice headphones. Let me tell ya, it helps a LOT. the Distorted guitars on the chorus hit A LOT harder then they do on the radio rip. I suggest everyone listen to the full quality version oh nice 'phones before totally hating on the track. The fade out is way more intricate then I initially thought, too. The verses certainly have a pop-punk flavor, which is unexpected, but I always welcome change. But then again, I've always been a sucker for a good pop melody. A pretty good track, IMO.

The first time I heard the track, my eyebrows nearly popped off of my face. "Whaaaaaa?" The quality of the BBC broadcast really sucked, too, and I'm glad there's a higher quality version out there. The more I listened to it, the more I got sucked in - that didn't happen for me with Came Back Haunted. I wasn't sure what to think on the first pass, but the more I listen to it, the more I really like it - and the more I think this is going to be one of the most polarizing songs in the NIN catalog.

I think it's fucking great, hahaha.

That was tongue-in-cheek. Although that's not to say that good work couldn't come about that way. One of what people tend to think is one of the better pieces of fiction I ever wrote was actually written with the goal of pissing someone off by giving them exactly what they had no use for/didn't want. It seems to me, like "Everything" is NIN/Trent in a song. Call me crazy here...

It starts clear, with lyrics about 'surviving everything'. This is early NIN, before the problems he had with drugs and drinking.
It then gets loud, and hard to listen. Then you hear lyrics about "being who you used to be," this is NIN in the 99-01 era, medicated and falling apart.
It clears up, again. We come to With Teeth, and more current stuff.
Then shortly after a "wave goodbye" we go loud again. Trent fights Interscope. 09-13.
Then, he returns. "I am home/I believe/I am free" Hesitation Marks.

All throughout are lyrics we've heard before. Like a scrapbook arranged in a cheery package. This is NIN in a song - meaning well but frequently falling apart.

It's brilliant.

I completely agree.

As I posted earlier, it evoked the strongest reaction out of me both as in the context of the music as well as the lyrical content. It's really good.

Couldn't agree more, man. And I also think it's fucking great. Polarizing as it already is, fuck it. I'm gonna dance to this mother at the concert like Avril Lavigne on Nickelback's backstage.

Reminds me of Maybe Just Once.

I bet this song was meant to be the most "marketable" of the album.

To be honest, considering the rest of the album and the apparent connection to The Downward Spiral, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a moment where the narrator is experiencing some false happiness. Even with all of his issues, I'm sure there were times where Trent had a good time. Maybe he's reflecting on those moments and how, in the context of the rest of the album perhaps, those moments don't last.

When I saw 'Blood Into Wine' I completely understood where Maynard was coming from about his interests diverging from Tool/growing as an artist, and I thought to myself "If they record one more album and I call it quits, that's fine by me. The same thing can be said about Trent Reznor...and the "Wave goodbye" line is probably hinting that this may be the last Nine Inch Nails record, it definitely made me think about it second time I listened to the song. Someone else mentioned earlier that this is no TDS2 but after hearing this track, Hesitation Marks could be The Upward Spiral? And closing the theme of what Nine Inch Nails is. Trent Reznor will continue, although I will understand if he chooses not to make music under the NIN umbrella anymore (maybe more Ghosts albums?).

The song also reminded me to "Not So Pretty Now".

Yo this song is way better than anything I've heard off the album so far. Ive been waiting for him to commit to the "pop" like Discipline on crack for a while now. This is perfect. // The production after the first verse is INSANE. The way those guitars come in on the chorus. Holy fuck. I could listen to this song just from how its mixed and what not for hours. And it makes me happy mood wise.

I just listened to my nin pre-order version on headphones, and its even better than the first three listens. I love it. I feel TR and NIN have evolved as I have evolved. Angry depressed teenager, to a recovering drug addict, to a clean, healthy father who is actually optimistic about life and the future.

Just as speculation, could this song actually be about the sweet release of death after overdosing, or some kind of dementia due to blood loss when trying to commit suicide? The lyrics sound a bit bittersweet, like he's been trying to kill himself and has finally succeeded. Or maybe the "old Trent" has finally killed himself and allowed the new Trent to prosper. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to like, cling to some hope that NIN will never write a happy song. It was just a thought I had while listening to it for the umpteenth time.)

Bare in mind, when he wrote this it wasn't intended to be for a new album, it was gonna be for a single to tag onto a greatest hits album.
personally I think it would have been a great way to end the greatest hits album.

(The reactions to the free song and asking of the track being removed from the final tracklisting on the NIN facebook page makes me feel so awful and terrible at how entitled people think they are.)

You're reading into it too much. With all due respect, I don't think what you're saying makes any sense.

I, for one, am happy that Reznor has not gone like the Korn guy, still writing "I hate myself" songs pushing 50.

Also, I love the fact Trent premiered the song in the UK even despite getting shafted at Reading & Leeds. I'm glad he still sees the UK as a great place.
I can't wait until April.

Well, after that, no one can accuse him of just retreading old sounds. Listen 2 sounds better than listen 1. I'm pretty much on the fence on this one. I can see why it hasn't been part of the summer shows. I don't see how you could fit that next to anything else in the set and maintain any fluidity. I do think it'll grow on me, and I don't exactly dislike it right away. I'm just a little meh... But lyrically, I dig that it's easily the most cheerful, happy and hopeful thing the man has recorded. Okay, finishing up listen 2, I do like the layering of the different sounds. Hmm... It certainly has potential. I just don't know what to do with it quite yet. That's not a bad thing.

Well... let's just say it: this day had to come at some point. The day that we listened a happy NIN song. And that isn't actually a bad thing, my first reaction was like woaaaah what the fuck is going. I still don't dig it too much, but I really think this takes big balls for a guy like TR, plus, let's face it, Trent is happy now, and this song doesn't have to be a 'fuck you'. I've always admired Trent Motherfucking Reznor for being honest with his music and I think this time isn't the exeption, so if he want's to transmit these feelings to us, well then, bring it on.
