Top ten favorite Halos

I am sure this has been done. But I am also sure this list can change daily. I don't have any remix albums unfortunately but I do own all of the studio albums and have heard quite a few other halos. Keep in mind this is all opinion and I love every Halo I have heard. Don't look at this as worst to best but rather great to personal favorites. I feel I will get chewed out for my number 4 pick but it was how I got into NIN so leave me alone haha. 10 is my least favorite and 1 is my favorite.

9. halo 9 (2-disc version) - closer to god
8. halo 27 - the slip
7. halo 19 (in 5.1) - with teeth
6. halo 5 / 6 - broken / fixed (inseparable, to me)
5. halo 17 (disc 2) - still
4. halo 2 (remaster, not including get down, make love) - pretty hate machine
3. halo 26 (DE...i'm a sucker for box sets, especially when they're full of amazing music) - ghosts i-iv
2. halo 8 (in 5.1) - the downward spiral

honorable mention to march of the pigs for having probably my favorite piece of cover artwork on a NIN release (up until the hesitation marks artwork was revealed).

i really just don't like year zero aside from 3 or 4 songs.

also, if i could include TR&AR soundtrack work in here, the girl with the dragon tattoo (vinyl box set) and the social network (in 5.1, which i'm currently listening to) would be tied with still for the #5 slot.

The Downward Spiral That remaster made me appreciate PHM in a whole new light. I agree. I think PHM is very good, especially the 2010 remaster version. But I do prefer is later works more. Ghosts opened my eyes to a whole new world. Really fed my subconscious.

The gap between TF and TDS is very, very narrow, but as I love concept albums and rock operas, the former gets a slight edge because of its sheer density. The "prog rock" factor is also the reason I have YZ on a third place. Broken is just awesome and will always remain so, though I find it hasn't dated as well as TDS.

The Slip and With Teeth probably mainly get high positions because I have fond memories of their respective releases. The latter, especially. The former scores a lot of points because the whole indie-thing Trent had going back then was cool as hell.

Ghosts I-IV I have to acknowledge because it's such a massive collection of awesome, instrumental music. And again, what a way to use the newfound independence! FDTS is arguably their best remix album. It feels like a natural extension of TDS, but it's more explorational without ever becoming grating like Fixed does in a few spots.

I only really got into PHM recently with the remaster. I like it, but my young age (well, relatively!) doesn't permit me to have much nostalgia about it. It's a good 80's industrial/synth pop album and the songs that are still performed deserve their status as classics, but it's not the NIN I love to the same degree as the above ones.

AATCHB is still the perfect live Halo. It's a killer live video, a great live album and Still contains some of Trent's most beautiful compositions. AATCHB (the song) is just jaw-dropping.

Finally, there's nothing here I really dislike, and the rankings are always subject to change. One day, I'll be in the mood for TDS. Another day, I'll fall madly in love with PHM. And judging by the songs I've heard, I also reckon Hesitation Marks will quickly find its way onto this list...

This list is different every day in my head. The Fragile, Year Zero and The Downward Spiral are pretty static at my top spots, though.

I do feel bad attaching numbers to these as I honestly only hold TF, YZ and TDS above the others in NIN's library. I do love most of it all equally.

My list should actually be 1-4 with the same 1-3 above and all other Halos being tied for 4th.

I think he means that it is a story, but that would mean TDS and The Fragile would also be considered prog rock. When I think of prog I think of vibrant and spacious noise, like 2112.

That would mean every concept album ever, is prog. Prog can be on a song by song basis. When I think of prog rock, i think of Peter Gabriel era Genesis (which rules!), rush, some tool etc......

The live DVD is pretty much what got me hooked onto NIN while I've been spinning an audio rip of BYIT for ages. Together with unofficial live recordings both remain staples on my iPod as I like to have pretty much every NIN song in my favorite live version before I put any album on it. With teeth may not be as good as the fragile, but I listened the shit out of it and it's probably the one NIN record that I have listened to the most in full. The fragile and the remix CD do somewhat belong together and the vinyl version of TF is a glory to behold! then there are the classics: spiral, closure (as it's the only great example of NIN live in 1994 IMHO), broken. The reissue of PHM gave the album a whole different dimension for me. It might have been the NIN record that I neglected the most, but the reissue changed that completely and I found myself enjoying it a great deal!
And then there is still that I want to list seperately as I usually put a mix of it and the CRC session on my iPod. Haven't listened to either in a while and thinking about it, I might just do it now. ;)

I actually had to struggle between still and the perfect drug but went with still as its more songs rather than a single. I love TPD though and it's pretty far up there with my top NIN tracks.

The Fragile does not contain a narrative so it's not a rock opera and a "soundscape" does not equal a "concept album" (a concept album being a modern term for rock opera).

And most classic prog rock albums were not rock operas, although many had soundscapes (e.g. most Yes albums).

Well I may be reading what Trent has said out of context, but I do believe he said this album is about someone is at rock bottom trying to rebuild his life and failing miserably at it.

That was the gist of it. Of course it could be argued whether the music of YZ is actually "prog rock". I do agree that it isn't, but I think it is very "progressive" compared to the standard sound of NIN.

This is list is ever changing, depending on my mood.

Even though With Teeth wasn't my favorite album for a long time, I continue to find myself playing it more often than others. I am also surprised how far down the list Pretty Hate Machine fell.

If I could pick and choose songs, I think some songs from The Slip would rank higher than those from say Year Zero. As a whole, though I find Year Zero to be a better album.
