I just got into Killing Joke this year, and I wish I had discovered Killing Joke much sooner. I hope I'm off to a good start with their music as I have gotten Night Time, and have thought about getting Brighter Than a Thousand Suns and Hosannas from the Basements of Hell next. I've also kept reading good things about their self-titled debut, so I'm definitely going to check that album out without a doubt too.

killing joke are amazing- top shelf. from the self titled up to and including brighter than a thousand suns, it's all awesome. i can't vouch for anything after (haven't listened), but i'll get back to you on that.

First learned of these guys after playing Need For Speed Underground 2 on the xbox way back. Their track The Death and Resurrection Show was on it, and i've loved that track ever since.

Amazing band! I started on the 2003 album. Brighter Than A Thousand Suns and Night Time are great, different, but great. I'm very partial towards What's THIS For. Fall of Because and Butcher slay me every time.

I might actually get the self-titled 2003 album next. (And no, I will not overlook the 1980 one either. ;)) I have ordered Hosannas from the Basements of Hell though, and like other bands, I'm just amazed at all the changes they went through.

This was the first band i ever saw live, dont want to say how long ago because its embarrassing and makes me sound really old. Their 1980 debut is their best record, it one of my favorite albums of all time. Its much better than you think its going to be.

It sounds like Public Image Ltds first record. But better. I love a lot of the suff this band have done. Their 2003 comeback album was amazing.

Requiem and Wardance =awesome. That guitar sound is epic.

Geordie Walker is one of my favorite guitar players out there! Every KJ album has its highlights in my book, while my favorites are "night time", "brighter than a thousand suns" and the later self titled together with "hosannas from the basement of hell". Their new one is pretty solid too and I can't wait for their next one and the supporting tour in 2012.

While that band is a bitch to be a fan of, since they like to cancel tours and postpone their albums with alot of unofficial and not really worthy stuff being released, a proper album from KJ is sure to make an appearance on any of my "best of year XXXX" lists!

I'd like to know what Trent thinks of them now. I know he has mentioned them a few times, but a collaboration would be out of this world!

I know it's like their most well-known song, but I cannot overstate how much I enjoy "Love Like Blood". The guitar in that track is eargasmic.

Having heard half the new one live and also caught how some of the tracks sound in their studio form, either leaked or promo wise, I can honestly say I have very high hopes for this one. It's sounding pretty damn majestic. If any of you catch them playing "Polar Shift" live then watch out for the mosh pit when the mad, mad, chorus bits drop in - that was insane!

You know when bands that have been around for ever start to trot out that line that their forthcoming album "is the best they've ever done" or "a new defining point in their career" or even that all their previous albums were them "leading up to this album" and it all sounds like a bit of a marketing cliché written by committee and it has the effect of setting a bar so high in fan's minds that when the release drops it's never quite that good?

MMXII does not have that problem. It IS that good.

Yeah, the mastering and production could do with a tweak here and there - that's a given for KJ these days - but by good god does it deliver!

There are touchstones all through that remind but never copy classic periods in their career but this is one solid, cohesive body of work with power and emotion absolutely undimmed & unbowed.

I've been listening to this band for the 31 years from "Killing Joke" to "MMXII" and I'm truly overjoyed this is now where they've got to.

If you're fan then prepare to be very pleased indeed.

Maybe I haven't given the album enough of a chance yet. But, so far I've only managed to click with just a couple of songs. I've yet to sit down and really absorb it though. It's good, but as of right now, I might like Absolute Dissent a little bit more. That could change though.

I really wanted to love Absolute Dissent but for parts of it I couldn't help feeling it was a bit of a "nearly" album for me.

Still very good and in parts brilliant but that thought in the back of my mind was that it was a half-step to one side of the rest of the catalogue like it needed to be/do something specific for the band for that release.

This one just seems like it sits absolutely with the back catalogue right back through the stand out releases - not so much an album at a point in time but one on the same ongoing trajectory.

Hard to explain - hope it makes some sort of sense!

Of course. AD did have some stinkers/filler tracks. But the songs that were good, really excelled. In Excelsis is easily a KJ favorite of mine now. One thing I'm noticing with this album, though, is that there seems to be remnants from every album prior. I hear a little bit of Night Time, a little bit of Pandemonium and Democracy, and a lot of the older stuff. It mixed well. Maybe my expectations were set a little too high. And maybe when I come back down to earth, I'll "get it". Regardless, I'm still buying this on Tuesday.

I really like this album as expected! While I love this band I have a hard time enjoying their albums as a whole, but this delivers! AD grabbed me immediately but I soon left it staying on my CD shelf and never really came back for it.

EDIT: The album is really a grower. It's gotten better and better with each listen. I think they might have outdone themselves with this one. It just flows so well and neatly combines everything that I love KJ for. Can't wait for their show in almost 3 weeks!

Extremities, dirt and various repressed emotions is my favourite, i'm surprised it doesn't get more praise. If you like NINs broken ep, manics holy bible, early PiL its a sure bet.... Money is not our god is one of their best ever and i am astounded they do not play it live

If I wasn't away, I would've posted about the Killing Joke concert on April 19th at the Irving Plaza ASAP. It was also very nice to see that Killing Joke played Money Is Not Our God, and felt very fortunate to have seen them play Turn To Red, Empire Song, Chop-Chop, Sun Goes Down, and Pssyche, especially when I looked them up after the show. (I'm still fairly new to them, so I had no idea about those songs before.) I also liked the way Jaz Coleman moved on stage. I can see how it very likely of Jaz to have also influenced Al Jourgensen in that way too.

My other highlights from that gig were also Requiem, The Wait, Eighties, Money Is Not Our God, The Beautiful Dead, Whiteout, Pandemonium, and The Death and Resurrection Show. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire show, and would like to see them again if given the chance.

As for any news on the latest release, all I found was the The Singles Collection 1979-2012, which came out on June 4th, but I've figured that most longtime/huge fans would've already heard it all by now. I actually thought of getting it too, but I also thought of getting the rest of the actual albums first.

I snagged a ticket to the Manchester Ritz gig in a month, cannot wait. Last time I saw them was the Hosannas tour, and the last tour with Raven. The sound wasn't too good that gig, but Hosannas holds a special place in my heart. Strength to strength since the reunion and Absolute Dissent, they can not put a single foot wrong.

This is one of those bands I'd heard a lot about over the years, but for some reason, I just never bothered to check them out.

They popped in my head last week, so I grabbed my headphones and finally gave them a proper listen. Now I'm completely hooked. Wow!!! These guys are badass!

"Discovering" a band that's been around for 35+ years, with a large discography, that's still making great music is a rare treat for me. I'm still combing through their albums, but so far, I'm really digging their early-mid 80's stuff and their 2003+ albums.

They'll be in Phoenix in January, along with The Soft Moon (love 'em). I can't wait to hear the new album and catch them on tour.

Indeed, this band are amazing. So influential. I like many still hold in affection ....their first self titled album from 1980 the most, one of my fav albums of all time. Just Post Punk at its finest. Its the type of debut album most bands would dream of making. however

I think the album Pandemonium (1994) their first with Youth for a decade is jawdropping at points, followed by Killing Joke 2003, i love the production on that album. The nasty crunchy guitar sounds particuarly epic on that album.
I was never a massive fan of Whats this For?? or Revelations, but loved the slightly New Wave sounding mid 80s album Night Time.

Probably their most underrated and heaviest album Extremities, Pain Dirt is great too.

I really want to see them live on this tour.

Killing Joke has many hidden gems, out takes, alternative versions, remixes, dub variations, and rarities with so many different songs.
Chaos For Breakfast is a great example and one of my favorite releases.
Absolute Respect has some really good to ok covers and interpretations and its definitely work checking out for those who haven't.

They've done it again! Most bands after 30 years lose a few steps. Not KJ. Another solid album. Unless they go the Outside the Gate route again, I don't think they can do any wrong. Only way I see age catching up to them is Jaz's lack of screaming. Aside from that, he sounds great. You would think after all the years of screaming, his voice would be shot. How it isn't is beyond me. Musically, this is a great album. No signs of them losing it or slowing down.

One thing ive noticed, The post punk era bands have had the longest longevity of any form of rock music, maybe its some sort of mindset thing , Killing Joke, Wire, Swans, Foetus, i even like PILs new album, ....i saw Cabaret Voltaire last year blow me away with new music.....they have been around for decades yet they still kick ass and sound vital.
They never sterilized their sound like so many do. Its awesome.

You’re not the only one but I like some time to get an emotional bond with the album just like Night Time.
It hits the right spot when I feel a certain mood for it or any of their albums for that matter.
It takes me a while for any album or a particular song to grown on me.

For example, This world Hell, and New Uprising, really get me pumped up and those where the first songs to really capture my full attention when I first heard them.
The entire album of Brighter Than a Thousand Suns makes me feel like I'm not alone when I'm feeling a bit down.
I mean the songs Adorations and Sanity help me cope with looking at what’s wrong with the world as a whole.

Not many artists let alone a band play their music truthfully and with conviction. This is why I hold Killing Joke in high regard.
Then there is The Raven King, that song to me has a lasting appeal and reminds me one of my favorite and most influential artist that has played in nearly every band that I care for.
(Prong, Ministry, and the web of other artist that he worked with that led me to discover more amazing music).


I always have no expectations when I listen to a new Killing Joke album and try to let the music speak to me and see what the band intentions are and the meaning they try to portray.
Sometimes it takes a little longer to fully comprehend and digest the music such as Pylon.
So far Pylon is an incredible album but I don't want to get swayed by the hype and like to draw my own conclusions.

I was about to buy tickets for their show in Phoenix, but noticed that there's a meet-and-greet/soundcheck option for an extra $75. Worth it? Are they pretty chatty/cool guys?

Pylon is way more stunning and incredible than I ever thought it would be, I loved AD, MMXII wasn't too bad and had a load of belters but this one just tops them all. It's still kinda revealing its power to me after a lot of listens, but to produce something like this so far into their career is incredible. Apotheosis is so very Hosannas-esque in all the right ways. All the riffs are killer and there is a lot of weight to the album, truly brilliant.

I saw them at Manchester last weekend, and they brought it harder than bands half their age struggle to. I was a few pints deep, and Geordie's guitar onstage was just otherworldly. They also played Panopticon & Exorcism which made my evening.

I'm definitely happy and thankful that I'll hopefully get a chance to see Killing Joke for the second time on a Saturday night next year. I felt like I lucked out as the first Killing Joke concert I've attended was a Friday night. As for Pylon, I really don't have much to say or add right now as other posters have summed up my exact thoughts. Dare I say though, it seemed to click with me a lot faster than MMXII did.

I Am The Virus also seems to be their latest music video to date, and even though it's a lyric video, I'll still take it. Aside from it being Killing Joke, I've always liked lyric videos anyway, and heck, they're sometimes fun to sing along to. :)

I forgot to ask this question earlier, but is Democracy hardly played anymore? (I was actually hoping to hear Prozac People and Pilgrimage on my first concert, but noticed that they didn't touch Democracy at all.) And if I'm not mistaken, is Outside the Gate the only Killing Joke album that sticks out like a sore thumb among The Gatherers?

As for calling the fan-base Gatherers, when did that actually come about?

I also like to sometimes make analogies when talking about certain bands, but as far as standing the test of time since the 1980s, would Killing Joke sort of be like the Deftones and would Ministry be like Korn? (This is more like a reverse analogy as you can see, but I thought you'd be the perfect person to ask as I've noticed that you also loved the Deftones.)

Would it also be safe to assume that there is a huge crossover between The Piss Army and The Gatherers?

As for a random Killing Joke thought, Money Is Not Our God really struck a nerve with me along with Age Of Greed. (Which I'm sure can also refer to the greed with in, which also ties in with gluttony.) Those songs really won me over as it's always thought-provoking to for me to be reminded of seeing just how money can be exactly like a god, especially after always seeing "In God we trust." on United States currency. I ended up chasing possessions and experiences a lot more than I should've and just forgot to live life and also took things for granted without even realizing it. And well, I'm still thankful and appreciative for what I've got, but those songs really reminded me to put such things into perspective in a sort of George Carlin/Bill Hicks sort of way. And with that being said, I also loved the video too.

Ok bit of resurrection here but I skipped page 2 and I'm relatively new to these forums so what is anybody's favourite era of this band and care to elaborate? Been a personal favourite of mine for many years now.

The Extremities, Dirt and Various Repressed Emotions through Pandemonium with Paul Raven had always been my favorite Killing Joke era; however, the past few albums have topped everything for me. The original lineup has been fire and on top of their game for a while now.

In retrospect, this is kind of a tough decision because at times I also heavily enjoy their Post-Punk New Wave, early-to-mid 80s material as well. Love Like Blood, Nighttime, etc.; but I suppose nothing tops the newer stuff for me.

I don't mind the new stuff myself but I like all eras of the band. Extremities is probably my favourite. Night time, pandemonium and Absolute Dissent ater that, but I like all of it. I don't think the last couple have been as good as AD, but close in places. I wouldn't mind some sort of a shift in style with whatever comes next though as I sort of feel that the current sound has reached its logical conclusion.

It's a hard choice. In a pinch I'd give it to the Night Time - Brighter Than A Thousand Suns period, but there's no denying most of their material is top-notch. Very few albums even come close to being bad, and yeah, Outside The Gate was just a Jaz Coleman solo album rebranded because record label bullshit so it barely counts.

Know what I think's an underrated album though? Democracy. It gets lost amidst everything else and I goddamn well love it.

Very few bands like Killing Joke out there anymore. Sometimes it's hard to be a fan with all the promies being made, yet they continue to release quality albums and their live shows are still amazing. Personally I cannot name a favorite, but I love the stuff from 2003 self titled onwards as much as I adore the "eighties" (literally) era. Too bad they don't play that stuff often apart from of course eighties and love like blood. Geordie Walker might easily be one of the most underrated guitar players out there.

But I do have to confess that I really have to be in the mood for KJ to fully appreciate them. Sometimes their albums are released and I couldn't care less, yet again there are times where they fully hit the nail on its head for me. Either way, I keep coming back to this band all the time and I always look forward to a new tour date near my area.

Bear in min 7-12 are all basically equal and great.....13 is solid but was getting too close to Duran Duran territory. Pylon I havent absorbed yet....Pandemonium is their best. Full on fucking assault. The Ministry album Al Jourgensen wishes he made....2003 is also a masterpiece..Revelations is the under-rated masterpiece that gets overlooked. Honorable mention goes to their 1979 debut EP Turn To Red which is also great and would fit in somewhere between 10-12

One of the few bands who actually get HEAVIER and MORE interesting as their career progresses. Pandemonium was a BIG step in that direction for sure. Though I love a good bit of their earlier post-punk and new wave output too!

All eras of KJ have been great. From the early post punk stuff, to the more new wave/synth poppy albums, to the later more industrial metal stuff, they really haven't put out a bad record. The two self titled albums are probably my favorites, and they're such totally different sounds from one another.

Forgot to menton, KJ 2003 and Pylon recently got reissues. Pylon benefited from it a ton, the mix feels less muddy and the drums have more punch. I hesitated before jumping on it as it felt like it only came out yesterday (2015! How?!). But it was worth it. The original version of Snakedance is a fun, groovy track.

Jury's out still for me on the 2003 rerelease. Maybe a bit more balance, less loud. Not sure.

Picked up the the 2020 Pandemonium reissue last month, same deal, less muddy. Only thing is the CD has "front cover" printed in the middle of the artwork and 'back cover" on the rear page of the booklet. At least it comes in a slipcase :p

Absolutely crushed by the loss of Geordie. One of my favorite guitarists of all time and a wholly unique ingredient to Killing Joke's sound over its forty year existence as a band. As with the band in general, he may not be a household name but he had a profound influence on those household names that cannot be understated. Was lucky enough to see the original lineup perform three times - the first time in 2008 when the then newly reunited original four played all of the self-titled debut and What's THIS For...! plus more at Irving Plaza in NYC, and the final time at an unbelievably tiny and intimate show at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn - and they rank among the best shows I've ever seen. Very little beyond NIN compares. And now those memories are even more treasured in my heart.

The bandmates and his family are in my thoughts. He leaves behind an incredible body of work, was active and kicking ass for decades (they released a great single just this year around the time of what is now sadly Geordie's last performance at Royal Albert Hall) and all the same was taken far too soon. Certainly an unprecedented time for Killing Joke. Jaz and Geordie have been the only constant members throughout its existence so I'm not even sure Killing Joke exists anymore, especially because he was so instrumental to the band's sonic quality. When I consider that the original lineup got back together when they were reunited by Paul Raven's death, I consider that maybe they will want to make something of this and move forward in some fashion. But whatever happens from here, Killing Joke will never be the same if it has a future at all.

Selfishly hoping that this year's single, Full Spectrum Dominance, was a tease of an album and that there is at least some finished material we haven't heard. When they were scheduled to play Sick New World last year I was hoping they'd book a few other US dates while they were stateside but then they dropped out. When they were scheduled to appear at next year's Sick New World I got up the same hope and I do believe they were gearing up to tour again but sadly it is not to be.

RIP Geordie. When it comes to your art you are irreplaceable. Thanks for all the music and memories. I'm gonna miss you.

Their show here in 2013 or so was one of the greatest by any band I've ever attended. I only knew a select few songs at that time, and I was instantly converted overnight. They absolutely pummeled me to oblivion.

This is a tremendous loss, and I can't fucking compute it.
