It's probably trying to say you aren't in a recognized U.K. location (being you are from New Zealand according to your profile). The same thing is happening for me in the U.S. so methinks we'll just have to wait until it's released officially for our region (wink wink).

Mystery solved. Live intro is just the extended Copy of A intro, not The Eater of Dreams, perfect. It's gonna take a while now to get used to the album version, but I already dig it, especially after minute 3. Weird hearing "start", "heart", "part"... pronounced like that. I like this version a lot more, i like the production,.The chorus is classic NIN but the music itself is quite different, it sounds not too dissimilar to a lot of the recent wave of electronic acts out right now Actress, Factory Floor, OPN, Emeralds etc etc and definitely recent Radiohead.
Its the opposite to anything on The Slip. Definitely a new direction.

thanks for the pm! i can see why this wasn't chosen as the first single. it's definitely a bit more unconventional/experimental than CBH. starts off very minimalistic, but then all kinds of layers of texture keep weaving in and out throughout. i love it! that instrumental bridge is very much like something off 'the downward spiral'. which i like the fact he's gone back to using layers of interesting textures this way. maybe a bit too soon to tell, but that sounds like adrian belew on guitar in some parts. who else thinks so?

Reznor, you cad! GodDAMN this is way more intriguing and layered than I expected. And yet, at the same time, I totally understand Trent's assertion that it plays from a more "minimized" aesthetic. I love how the vocals are so clearly near-whispered, and most of the track is held through only a few beat lines... until the noise and intrigue crosses the bridge. It's at once delicate and agressive - instantly better than anything on With Teeth and The Slip. And the live versions (though their frenetic pacing can't be denied).

To be clear I'm not dissin on WT or TS - I love and appreciate both for what they are - but yes, this seems to have better production and heart behind it. I also thought YZ was superior to the other two if a little forced in the narrative at times.

All the live-debut "leaks" had me hoping that HM would be a return to DS and TF style composition... and it seems like that's the case in the studio so far. Copy of A is a MUCH stronger and more dynamic track than CBH, but I understand why it wasn't the debut single.

Oh man, this makes me long to hear Eater of Dreams even more. I hope it's the kind of face-smash tag team that Broken and TF made famous...

Instantly better than anything on With Teeth? Surely you're forgetting ATLITW and the final trinity of songs? However, this is taking some of the best ideas he's been playing around with and sculpting them together, in a dark and minimalistic way. It already sounds like 'classic' NIN, imo.

The last four on WT are some of his best songs and THTF/Only are good but the rest of that album is trash. This is a great song that hardens back to PHM.

Heh... I honestly did consider those when I wrote that. Also "Sunspots". I actually think that final trinity is a strong close to the album, BYIT was an instant fave and remained so for a long time, and TLBTB is simply glorious for its pounding aggression. Thing is though, those songs - especially BYIT - seem so... simple... compared to what we knew Trent could do. Which is not at all to say they are inadequate, just that they lack a certain depth or intrigue. BYIT is a few loops drawn out for maxium effect. TLBTB is agrressive but sonically simple. RWIT again, seems to follow a simple structure.

You could say Copy of A also follows a simple classic structure, but... I don't know (this is where I get pissed at myself for not studying music enough to know all the terms better)... it just SOUNDS like there is a lot more going on, there's a greater dynamic range in emotion and noise and source at play.

They're all great songs and I'm forever indedbted to Trent for making them... I just think this one is better.

The most unfortunate thing with WT for me was/is its presentation in being rather rough. The main message of the album is plastered everywhere you turn (just look at all the lyrical similarities, b-sides included), and yet musically it's scattered in style (although generally less layers, for sure, sometimes going way back in time). I dislike that the last three songs are so together at the hip for the reason that everything else is basically not. I'm working on a custom WT track listing for myself, I'll post it somewhere on here when it's done.

Okay so I'm on my second go around. If this is the "minimal" direction Trent is talking about...it sure sounds incredibly layered to me. This is exactly in the direction I was hoping Trent was going to go...something experimental and soundscape electronic wise in the vein of Ghosts and The Fragile but also feeling very new and fresh.

I loved the live version but holy crap, this is just as good if not better.

September 3rd....( or a couple days before for the leak...which doesn't matter since I have the deluxe edition coming to me :D )

The amazon version is actually 274 kbps. Now, maybe 256 kbps AAC is theoretically a little better than 274 kbps MP3, but in practice it doesn't really matter. Heck, I'm completely fine with -q 4.25 ogg vorbis ("136 kbps" though in practice closer to 128 kbps)

These seem to be the correct lyrics:

I am just a copy of a copy of a copy
Everything I say has come before
Assembled into something, into something, into something
I don't know for certain anymore

I am just a shadow of a shadow of a shadow
Always trying to catch up with myself
I am just an echo of an echo of an echo
Listening to someone's cry for help

Look what you had to start
Why all the change of heart?
You need to play your part
A copy of a copy of a
Now look what you've gone and done
Well that doesn't sound like fun
See I'm not the only one
A copy of a copy of a

I am little pieces, little pieces, little pieces
Pieces that were picked up on the way
Imprinted with a purpose, with a purpose, with a purpose
A purpose that's become quite clear today

Look what you had to start
Why all the change of heart?
You need to play your part
A copy of a copy of a
Now look what you've gone and done
Well that doesn't sound like fun
See I'm not the only one
A copy of a copy of a

I am just a finger on a trigger on a finger
Doing everything I'm told to do
Always my intention, my intention, your attention
Just doing everything you tell me to

Look what you had to start
Why all the change of heart?
You need to play your part
A copy of a copy of a
Now look what you've gone and done
Well that doesn't sound like fun
See I'm not the only one
A copy of a copy of a

Look what you had to start
Why all the change of heart?
You need to play your part
A copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a
Now look what you've gone and done
Well that doesn't sound like fun
See I'm not the only one
A copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a

The only thing I'm not feeling about Copy of A is the annoying gothy artwork of some fucking dead dude's face. Didn't like the CBH art either, glad these weren't Halo's.

Song fucking rocks though, how can you not want to dance when the noise hits!

Actually this artwork is just a larger version of a segment of the artwork for the vinyl. There is a thumbnail of this cover right in the center of the vinyl cover.

So, should I bother actually legitimately acquiring this if/when Amazon US has it for free at midnight, even though I've already "borrowed" it?

If it's FREE then why wouldn't you? You'd have your own legally obtained copy.

If the UK got this a day early to make up for the Scala Horror, then that is very cool indeed. Thank you.

I wish this would be available on nin.com like Came Back Haunted is for those of us who preordered it.

edit: i have the track already, just wouldn't mind it in nice shiny apple lossless with hi-res (probably single specific) art =)

This fucker really bumps the second round of the chorus.

Like everyone else, I'm ready for this album

Fuck, this song rules! I loved the live version the first time I heard it at lollapalooza but holy shit, the studio version blows it away. His voice sounds amazing and the electronics sound so much more precise and interesting. The breakdown in the middle is unreal and the cutting of his voice during the second or third verse is very cool.

I am so excited for this album!!

Thanks again for the PM greyskies13!!

Jaw. On. The. Floor.

This. Chills.

Copy of A, memories of The Fragile. Seriously. Is this a single? Cause if it is, I can't think of a better NIN single, ever...

Well, there were some off TF that were awesome too, but yeah this one is definitely up there at the top of the list!

Into The Void was a great single. Starfuckers was such a weird song in the context of the album (it sounded so different), but WITT and TDTWWA were decent. Recently, I've been feeling 'meh' with NIN's singles. They're 'good' compared to what else is out there, but not as good as the other songs on the albums they were on. Every Day is Exactly the Same, Capital G and Discipline especially.

I have to say, being a Chuck Palahniuk fan, I'm really loving that chorus, "A copy of a copy of a."

The US version has about a 20 kbps lower average bitrate and different artwork.
EDIT: Plus, the US version was encoded by LAME 3.98 beta whereas the UK version was encoded by LAME 3.99.
