Wow I'm late to the party on this one!

https://youtu.be/NBWSm3dQpvk

edit: this got me thinking, does anybody have the link to the Wendy's commercial from a few years ago that was obviously inspired by Work For Love?
I often find myself returning to that Shasta commercial as well. It actually reminds me as to why I sometimes prefer Al to sing more than scream. I also like how hearing "So So Cola" instantly reminded me of So So Life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st6YE1BSR-M

https://youtu.be/6H9KgoiCdOY
I also missed this due to skipping to the latest page a lot, but it also reminded me of Walk in the Park.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPVH1PjYgXQ

It just makes me wonder how his older material would sound with industrial metal/rock mixed into it. And as far as 1980s and 1990s Ministry go, I just find myself listening to With Sympathy, Twitch, Filth Pig and Dark Side of the Spoon the most. I think it's also because I actually kept listening to The Land of Rape and Honey, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, Psalm 69, Houses of the Mole, Rio Grande Blood and The Last Sucker non-stop when I became a fan during the second half of the 2000s. This could also be why I still wished there would be more songs from anything but those 6 albums, even in spite of how they're still easily among my favorites.

I still somehow found Relapse and From Beer to Eternity to be fun listens though.

Every Day is Halloween and What's Wrong With Me? (Although that's a Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters song.) also seem to get more relatable with age. But that's also just me talking. :p

Speaking of which, I think that's also what has drawn me to Filth Pig and Dark Side of the Spoon, as I find them to be very relatable albums.

(Some of the Bush Trilogy stuff is better than I remember too, like Let's Go? Damn that's a burner!)
A storm's a brewing! (It seemed like a good chance to post this too.) https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/images/smilies/wink.png

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nso3wgGQu3s

But for real. As a matter of fact, I always liked The Bush Trilogy, but I still agree that Ministry's set-lists are obviously/clearly so much better with more songs from outside of it as well. For some reason though, I actually found myself listening to Houses of the Mole and The Last Sucker more than Rio Grande Blood though, but then again, I also really enjoy Ass Clown and Khyber Pass.

There is a proven track record of Ministry(and co-conspirators) doin' pretty good covers, so in that sense, I am curious.

I'm so thankful and happy to know that Al is finally coming to terms with With Sympathy. Albeit extremely at a gradual pace, but it's perhaps much better than having him loathe it and trash it more and more, decade by decade. Sometimes I also like to imagine how it would've turned out for Ministry if they also have the chance to perform at Woodstock 1994 without Al disowning With Sympathy. It's quite fun, at least to me imaging how the set-list could've gone, with Ministry beefing up With Sympathy and Twitch songs alongside The Land of Rape and Honey, The Mind is a Terrible Terrible Thing to Taste and Psalm 69.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MR8lMcT9-o

And as I've mentioned numerous times by now, I sometimes still can't get enough of With Sympathy, so it's a pleasant surprise every time I come across a review of it.

Ministry in 81-82 (pre-WS) was raw and energetic. in fact some of it doesn't sound too dissimilar tempo and aggression wise from stuff he'd do 5 or 6 years later. so much synth awesomeness in this. even political lyrics that he's known for show up here.

If only Ministry would perform America live again, especially after putting out an album that has AmeriKKKant as its title.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcp4kJCj2ns

It also seems like Just Like You and We Believe have also become even more relevant than before.

Anyway, I also wanted to say that I still think that it's pretty cool to see lots of early Ministry fans here. In real life, I think most fans I've met and seen were mostly fans of everything 1988 and up, or were also far more fixated with the post-Paul Barker eras.

oh, I love the track America!! again, it just shows how his lyrics have always been politically conscious. it's so weird when I see comments on youtube saying "I'm not a fan of him anymore, how dare he bash Trump" and I'm like.."but he's been saying this type of stuff since 1981!!"

I have been on a big 84-87 period lately. Listened to Twitch/Live Toronto 86 a lot the past few days and was thinking the same thing..Just Like You, We Believe, Over the Shoulder, Isle of Man...more relevant now than ever! I recall having a conversation with Trent some years ago and he was saying Twitch was his favorite.

So the Chicago 1982 LP from the Trax Box just got an extended CD re-release as Chicago/Detroit 1982 (https://www.amazon.com/Chicago-detroit-1982-Ministry/dp/B07VGTYMKY). A few new performances on there. According to the folks on Prongs, those last few tracks might be a little off pitch-wise.

I love "Le Stupide". :D

Slight update is that that's from one of the old band members from that period who posts there. So the speed and pitch of the Detroit show is supposedly off "a half-semitone sharp and too fast by about 4%". I ran said tracks through Audacity's Change Speed function (which accounts for pitch as well), and they sound way better as a result. PM me if want :)

I really enjoyed how All Day turned out to be back in 1984. Dare I say, I even like this more than it turned out to be in 1986/1987.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mieL3FUXQbo

And I finally came across Toronto 1986, and Just Like You and Over The Shoulder also sounded so much better than I expected them to be. I enjoyed it so much, that I'd actually switch between Toronto 1986 and In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReddfRfZWtE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYMNx-XdfIc

I was also pleasantly reminded and surprised that We Believe was actually performed in 2003.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY1VL8g6kQU

All of this is actually making me miss the Piss Army forums, with Ministry fans being Pissants or whatnot, even if I never joined. And even if I was never around for it, in spite of how much I enjoyed 1990s and 2000s Ministry, I just can't and won't ever let go of 1980s Ministry. :)

Nice video and great song, but there’s definitely some cheese mixed in there. Al frantically playing around with the sound board controls and the lighter part. Perhaps the biggest lol moment is Al having to read the lyrics. This song has been in existence for about 35 years and Al still doesn’t know the words. I bet 95% of his concert going fans can sing this without a lyric sheet.

Those setlists for all the bands are fucking phenomenal it's gonna be a good time tonight!
I'm wondering what the tour poster looks like I might snag one along with some merch if they're available after the show ends.

You won't be disappointed.
Even though their set is short it's the best setlist they've played in years imo.

Pics from last nights show including some of the merch.
I got a few videos too but I might upload them to YouTube seeing as I just learned that imgur doesn't have sound in the two videos I accidentally uploaded.

Aside from the ones they are given to the VIPer's the only one I saw was from Primus. It was $100 signed and around $40-$60 without signatures.
If there was other posters being sold I didn't see it with one caveat, VIP'ers also got a first chance at the merch tables and they could have sold out even before I got to the table.
I really want the Final Campaign Tour poster so I can frame it with my ticket :(.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I feel that's Ministry's best era of work, so definitely worth it if you love that material. The demos and unreleased songs are fantastic and are just as good if not better than the songs on With Sympathy and Twitch. They are fully realized songs, and apart from some tape hiss, they sound like studio quality tracks.

They've reissued that box set, and last time I checked it's $50, not bad for the amount of content, plus the cool 12" record and book it comes with.

I know this got shut down in the RHCP thread, but I wasn't familiar circumstances surrounding with River Phoenix's death, and upon some research, i noticed on his Wikipedia page this...

On the evening of October 30, 1993, Phoenix was to perform with the band P which featured his good friends Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, actor Johnny Depp, Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers along with Al Jourgensen of Ministry at The Viper Room, a Hollywood nightclub partly owned at the time by Depp.

Can't say I've ever heard Al being involved with this. Is this factual or just someone making shit up? (cuz that never happens on the internet)

I know he will never do With Symapthy stuff ever again but busting out a few Twitch songs can't hurt. What a fucking show man... And not a single fuckin' Canada date. I am so cheesed. Man. We get the shaft on EVERYTHING!
Starting to hate this country. If I could pack my bags and join ya'll in the USA, I would. You guys get it all.
This Canada thing is a joke. Pure joke. All we have is snow and 2 million dollar 500 sq ft 1 bedroom condos. Fuck this place.

I just came home to see this and my spirits soared for like 5 seconds before crashing to earth.

Not even fucking Toronto? Jesus. What is happening lately?

This is just me speculating, but I’d imagine going through customs and an possibly traveling internationally is a pain in the ass for doing paperwork and taxes and what not. Maybe someone in the industry like theimage13 can provide some insight.

Al finally recognizing how good his 80s discography is and giving these albums the love they deserve. I know he will never do With Symapthy stuff ever again but busting out a few Twitch songs can't hurt. Yeah it was pretty awesome to hear Missing/Diety and finally Supernaut (after getting shafted at RIOTFEST, that would have been the perfect time to play it. But Trent couldn't be bothered to even give a New Order or Saul Williams cameo. Oh well, it was still awesome but I'm sure I'll always be slightly salty...)

I donno about that, because canada still gets the odd date attached to a US tour. But it's mainly been garbage pop acts that will tack on the odd Toronto or vancouver date. It just seems like we keep consistently getting the shaft. I mean, NIN skipped us on CB+I as well. I understand not coming out west, but the absence of even a Toronto date is concerning and unheard of.

I know that Sascha of KMFDM hates coming to Canada because he said the boarder always treats him like shit. Plus, the last time they were in Toronto the promoter stiffed them of their pay, so I'm sure those play a picture as to why he doesn't come here anymore, but this is Ministry's tour by the looks of it, and kmfdm are just guests. Doubt kmfdm have control over where they go on this one.

I mean, matchbox 20 and wallflowers are coming. Yay...
/sarcasm

Just seems like anything in the goth/metal/industrial scene doesn't come up here anymore for whatever reason that is. Or at least they're coming here less and less and less.

Yeah, I travel at least once if not twice a year for shows as well. I usually plan a huge outing once per year, which takes a huge bite out of the wallet, so it would be nice to recoup some and have bands come to me for once, but they never do. This year, we're doing Germany for the Wave Gothik Treffen Festival and then heading down to Switzerland for the Rammstein stadium show. This trip is gonna set my girlfriend and I back collectively around 10K. Sheesh... just thinking about it makes me want to cry, lol. Least KMFDM are gonna be at WGT this year, so that softens the blow a bit about this show not coming here. I know for a fact that Rammstein will never step a foot back into Vancouver again no matter what, so I know I need to travel to see them. They came here in 2012 to a half empty arena. The venue upgraded everyone in the upper bowl to lower bowl to try and pack the seats and make it look more busy, lol.

That could be it, or it could be part of the story at least. It is expensive and time-consuming to get through customs just once if you have any previous convictions for something as "minor" as a DUI. It can be done, and it often is (as should be obvious by the number of tours that cross the border). But sometimes it may be prohibitively expensive, or you may have someone within the band even who just says "you know what, fuck that, we're not going through the hassle just for one fuckin' show".

Typical border crossing goes something like this: your bus pulls up to the border, usually at a painfully early hour of the morning after having finished your last show. If everyone on the bus has a squeaky-clean record, there's a small chance that an agent will board, match up passports with faces, and let you head on through. More often, it's "everyone off the bus," you each speak with an agent individually, and if you're clean it's still nothing more than your basic "any weapons, massive piles of cash, etc", then as soon as a cursory drug / weapons sweep of the bus is done, you're back on and heading to the next city. But if there is even ONE person on your bus who's got a prior conviction, it gets more complicated. You basically carry a letter that says "people who cost lots of money have made sure that I'm legally allowed to come in here even though I've been arrested for something". Sometimes they read your letter, have a quick chat with you, and let you go. Sometimes it takes an hour or more. In one instance, we almost missed a show because a carpenter had the same name (down to the middle initial) and hometown as someone wanted for aggravated assault and they held him (and thus, the rest of the bus) for six or seven hours.

So with that in mind, think about the history of people in a band like Ministry, as well as probably some of the people who work for them. If there's not a major demand for multiple Canadian shows that can all be done in two crossings (one in, one out), there is a very good chance that they could do the shows, but just don't want to deal with the hassle. This is, of course, merely speculation.

Yeah my local events center did that with Ghost a few months back. Pushed the stage forward too. Another manager i work with originally had seats right at the corner of the stage and ended up pretty far from it, I would be pissed off too but I had GA and was FOB so it didn't matter to me.

That's usually what happens here though, we get a string of shows that they have to close off the upper seats for and end up selling tickets for 20 bucks, then it's nothing for years and years. Why would a band want to play to that when they could go to Minneapolis or Lincoln and sell the place out and make double on merch? For use it boils down to being geographically in the middle of nowhere.

as of 1/18, Spin reported Ministry's only response during the reporting was:

Al Jourgensen, frontman of Quirin‘s current band Ministry, was contacted by Spin in regards to the allegations and responded via the apparent same lawyer, Randolph Ortega, offering:
“Mr. Jourgenson (sic) is unaware of any of potential nefarious activity by any member of Ministry during their respective tenure(s) with the band including but not limited to Mr. Sin Quirin.”
Various other details regarding the allegations against Quirin, including exact details, commentary from other industry professionals, the emotional trauma suffered as a result and more can be found in Spin‘s exhaustive report over at Billboard.com (https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/rock/8548353/ministry-guitarist-sin-quirin-accused-underage-sexual-relationships). In 4 days maybe Al can fire the rapist he has as a guitar player who he is bffs with....My guess is they will just announce a new album. Considering he has been dropping shitbombs on a regular basis ever since Barker left, this brings me no excitement. If he finds an albums worth of B sides from Land of Rape and Honey/Mind is a Terrible Thing To Taste....Then I will get excited

HmmmI agree about it being the best since Mole (which I love), but that's just because everything in between has been pretty shitty. Hopefully this new one builds on the good aspects of the last one and is even better.

I'm in the boat that maintains Amerikkkant was a massive step up from anything since Houses. At this point I'm not expecting Al to reinvent the wheel or anything, just hoping he puts out the dirty, heavy industrial rock he does best. This delivers, hope it's reflective of the new album.

I’m late to the party, but as I work my way through Ministry’s back catalogue in a non-linear, haphazard fashion, I’ve recently begun listening to Twitch. My goodness, I can hear how Trent found this to be such an inspiration; Sherwood and LeBlanc’s fingerprints are all over this thing like they are on PHM. It’s like nothing else that I’ve heard in their catalogue, so far.

And tonight I stumbled on this era-relevant gem -

I've been periodically nudging him. Last I heard he was holding until after Industrial Accident was released...and here we are.

Those videos definitely have the best sound quality so far any of the 84 live recordings.

In the meantime, here's a Twitch outtake that just got released, which leaves about a dozen songs (pre-Twitch) in the unreleased status.

Probably because Sire doesn't want to invest in it.

Maybe Cleo will work out a licensing deal. Would love to see remasters and unreleased stuff from that era.

Did anything ever end up happening with that? I know that Cesar was doing those riff videos for Ministry for a while, but there was never a peep from Al about this.

I'm certainly hoping that Connelly is a part of it and Sin is out. That would be the best outcome for sure. I am sad that KMFDM won't be part of it anymore, but I'm not upset about Helmet either. I saw them a few years back and it was a great show. Probably one of the loudest shows I've ever seen, so with Ministry too earplugs are gonna be necessary.

I just don't believe in coincidences. His original tweet states unforeseen circumstances but the timing was too good to be anything other than Sin related. All this noise was around Jan 2020, so deets are a bit hazy...but I remember some noise pertaining to Lucia from KMFDM and her not standing against Sin's alleged behaviour. I don't believe cancel culture is right but investigations should happen and Al should have said something.

Dont think this will ever happen. During the WaxTrax RSD show in 2019 I had the chance to chat with Barker and asked him if he had any plans to join the band on stage that night. He looked right at me and said "there is no way I will get on stage with them tonight or any time in the future." It kinda caught me off guard and our conversation ended on that note :(

EDIT: As you may have seen before I said a bunch of kinda rude shit about Al and current day Ministry...For those of you who know, well...if you saw the post, you know. But after seeing them open for NIN at Cuyahoga Falls on Saturday... I'm gonna have to eat my words. They totally bring it live and their set was insanely fucking good! Everything I'd hoped for in a Ministry set. Dark, chaotic, insanely heavy and maybe just a big unhinged. The band was incredibly tight and the classic tracks sound as intense as they ever did in the late 80s/early 90s. Sorry to anybody interested in that previous post but it feels better to delete that in light of this. I had the time of my fucking life seeing them, even if it was only for 45 minutes. The project and post-Paul albums be what they may (and my opinion in that regard hasn't changed) but I'd highly recommend going to see them live if the vibe is anything like what I saw this past weekend.

Not bad I'll check it out, though those Filth Pig harmonicas are starting to wear a little thin. :P

I do like the fact that this has a few lead lines and it's not quite all the chugga-chugga metal I've become used to/afraid of hearing out of Al. Amerikkkant was a step in the right direction, I've been able to throw it on here and there. Still think Surgical Meth Machine's I'm Invisible is the most interesting thing he's done in recent years.

Still crossing fingers for more stuff out of the early ages vault though, of course. :)

Speaking of, not the best quality but check out this absolutely amazing and fucked up version of All Day from 1987, when Al had shaved his head, looked terrifying, and had gone all Hulk Smash Synthpop:

Still think Surgical Meth Machine's I'm Invisible is the most interesting thing he's done in recent years.

Still crossing fingers for more stuff out of the early ages vault though, of course. :)

Speaking of, not the best quality but check out this absolutely amazing and fucked up version of All Day from 1987, when Al had shaved his head, looked terrifying, and had gone all Hulk Smash Synthpop:

This version is amazing - wish there was a better quality or a studio version. All Day is easily my favorite Ministry song.

I've been on a big Ministry kick lately after not paying attention to them my entire life. Was never a fan of their heavier stuff, but Twitch is amazing, and there are a few tracks on LORAH that are absolute bangers (like the title track and stigmata)

There apparently is. Story goes on the Prongs boards that he reworked the entire thing, new vocals and all, and this is the result, done live 86-87, but the finished track never saw release....like many things from that period, it seems. A bunch of stuff still remains unheard (https://discourse.prongs.org/t/knowledge-base-for-unreleased-tracks/6492).

Trax! Box is absolutely essential!

Al's apparently stated that he's got TWO Ministry records in the can, and just needs to finish vocals on the second one.

I'll check out the trax box - I'm familiar with the 12" singles (1981-1984) and this appears to include a lot of that. I actually snagged the 12" singles vinyl on preorder price for 16 bucks, although it's now at 34. Looks like a rerelease, comes out in September

Random Ministry question: Paul's Flowering Blight release, The Perfect Pair, very obviously uses the Type O Negative font as well as album cover layout (Name in top right, Album in bottom left, both turning with the corner). What is up with that? Has that ever been asked or commented on?

Fuck fuck fuck fuck. Need to correct myself here.

I'm thinking of a remix of The Angel, not All Day. The Angel remix is some kind of holy grail of a scrapped single, described as unrecognizeable from the original. "You wouldn't be able to tell it's Angel...It went from this kind of ambient song to this real in-your-face kind of anthem march."

https://youtu.be/eBQay8SYPhU

If there's a studio version of that reworking of All Day, nobody knows. I mean, there very well could be. There's probably a lot of stuff nobody's ever heard. I'm not sure too many people were aware of the existence of 'Cause We're In Love Again' (which is from 1987 according to the prongs forum, same sessions that produced 1000 Homo DJs' Apathy) until it surfaced on the Industrial Accident soundtrack...there's also a snippet of a song called 'Hopeless Days' that appears in the movie, which I need to rewatch to see if I can catch it.

I've noticed that too and I've often wondered if it was meant as a nod :)

It's my pleasure. There's something about the early period of Ministry that's really captivating; I can't get enough of it. There's this mystique and almost a sense of mystery about it; it's fascinating to belhold Al's sound evolve and change into what it became, and every time a new gem is found and gets dusted off, I'm thrilled. Nobody can really say how much material exists. It's like various pieces of a six-seven year puzzle constantly being found, all of which seem so wildly disparate yet fit together.

Since it can be really daunting trying to make sense of it as all these releases occurred in isolation here and there, I whipped up a spotify playlist of the officially released stuff to illustrate how things changed as they went on, up to the Stigmata single (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6XlORtYudEC1ti8JGeqDa9). Tracklisting is pretty well approximate; as when the demos in particular were recorded is the subject of a good amount of guesswork. :)

This is so true. What an entirely fascinating trajectory this band’s sound has taken over the years. And I think this journey pre-dates even the synth-pop of With Sympathy. ‘I’m Falling’ was released prior to WS, and owes more to post-punk (The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division) than synth pop.

Listened to some of the new singles (Good Trouble) and it sounds kind of reminiscent of Amerikkkant and not in a good way. Nothing really interesting there, hopefully some of the album will surprise me, lyrically wise Al is still doing the same protest thing but it has none of the bite or effectivness. I will still give it a shot when it will release though.

With regards to unreleased stuff they recorded a whole album in 1998 but scrapped it apart from 1 track(Kaif) and then recorded and released Dark Side Of The Spoon.

One song does not make an album... and compared with the "Good Trouble (Unity Mix)" posted on the last page, I don't see any issues with the up-coming album.

Everything Al has released post 2003 has been utter shit so I won't even bother with this new one. And I am someone who thinks Dark Side of the Spoon is a good album. Plus Al claiming half the songs are about climate change and black lives matter (a year too late Al) makes it sound like it will be about as cringe as the antifa song he did a few years back.

Yeah, I'd actually be really interested in hearing that, too. Kaif is one of my favorite mid-period Ministry tracks, and actually relatable to me as I push 40. "Where did the time go?"

Supposedly there's a whole other alternate version of Filth Pig, too!

As for the new Stooges cover...s'alright. I'm somewhat intrigued by what I've heard so far, but I really need to hear more of it before I plonk down (like I just did for an LP of Live 1986 to go along with my CD :P).

I doubt the new album will blow my mind, but if it's as listenable as Amerikkant, I can dig it. I'd say there's been a mild upswing from the later Bush years, Relapse and From Beer To Eternity to what we're hearing nowadays. Nothing great, but listenable.

Been wondering about the "other album" Al said he needed to finish vocals for. Kind of wondering whether that means he's doing what he did when he decided to put out "I'll Do Anything For You" a few years back and touching up old stuff - he totally re-recorded his vocals for that one. I wish he wouldn't take it quite so far, but I'll take what I can get.

One listen though, this certainly does not suck. I like how processed it feels at points - like good, lockstep, industrial processing. There's hints of Rape and Honey influence going on. Might be a big step up from Amerikkkant, which was just that to the prior few albums.

I'm just so sick of the political shit. It immediately dates the record and he's not saying anything profound. People who shape their personality around politics usually do so because they lack interesting qualities. I don't think that's Al. He's simply given up. It's boring.

I don’t agree that responding to the political climate in one’s art means one is shaping their personality around politics. A lot of the time art is used as an outlet so that the stressors and anxieties themselves don’t shape a personality.

I think Al is a fascinating character, who has a lifetime of fascinating stories. A person who, despite what one might think of his current state of mind, was once a fiercely intelligent person. An artist who has in fact been making political statements in his music since the opening track on 1986’s Twitch, ‘Just Like You’. Politics and Ministry have been closely intertwined for almost the entirety of the band’s existence, and has been a near ubiquitous lyrical thread running through its output over the years.

Being “sick of the political shit” wouldn’t leave you too much of a discography left to enjoy.

I think maybe the point the guy was trying to make was that Al gets hung up on politics and can't let them go. For instance, there's a "Bush Trilogy". Nearly everyone can agree that guy was a piece of shit, but do we want to go back and hear songs about him complete with samples?

He does tend to date his albums with current events, especially more recently.

If you think about the protest songs of the 1960s, they didn't point out specifically what they were singing about (in general). They remain classics even if the subject matter goes over peoples heads.

The transitions between tracks on this album are great. Really feels like a cohesive album and probably the best thing they've released since Houses of the Mole (an underrated classic IMO). The more instrumentally-driven tracks toward the end really reminded me of LORAH and TMIATTTT. Will need to give it a few more listens to see if it holds up though. I think I had similar thoughts about the last album, but I've still only listened to that once, so I'll have to check that out again too. I do agree about the overly on the nose political lyrics. Trump already lost, why are we still complaining about him? And are people going to want to listen to a song about Covid-19 10 years from now? The album was dated before it was even released. Musically it ain't bad though.
