I really wish he would remove all the shit out of his face...it just makes him look sillyIf he wants to look like a carny, he's succeeded. The forehead tattoo takes the cake though. It's not even good. It's like some drunk guy tried to draw something illuminati-ish, smeared it, then tattooed it. Probably what happened. The piercings are weird but not the end of the world. It's crazy to see how he de/evolved since 1980.

honestly only kinda regretting missing Chelsea wolf at this point.

Yeah I feel like that. If I lived in (or closer to) London I might consider it for a night out, but I can't bring myself to make much effort. Having Chelsea Wolfe in support is a tiny bit left field and I would like to see her at some point.

One thing I would go out of my way to see is that Cold Waves line up. Super annoyed with myself for missing both Cocksure and Revolting Cocks when they came to the UK. If I win the lottery I'll be heading straight to Chicago, but I live in hope for a Cold Waves Euro tour at some point. I see FLA are touring with Die Krupps this year, which is part of the way there. Old-school industrial nostalgia package tours are the way forward. Bring it.

The reality is probably not that amazing, but just the idea of having Chris on stage again with Ministry is rather exciting. I don't have any grand visions of Ministry returning to what they once were, or a classic band reunion, but the fact that Al is clearly a bit happier and more grounded is great to see. I've not listened to the album proper yet, but I'm increasingly tempted to give it a go after what people have said.
That current band though - I don't know, even with better (or older) songs they sound kind of limp to me. What are the chances he would switch things around at this stage?

Just got back from the Montreal date. Definitely the craziest show I've been to in a while, felt like half the floor was moshing to Just One Fix. Heavy on the thrash period but I knew that going in. New material went over well with the crowd.

Sadly Chelsea Wolfe had to cancel on us due to their bus breaking down. Hope they come back around soon.

If anything, it goes to show what Paul did with his latest album is, everything after Filth Pig and all the way through to Animosity was majorly influenced by him.
I think that's why I don't like most of the latest Ministry albums, it missing Paul's special touch (House of the Mole is an exception).
While I lament that Paul split from Ministry, I'm kinda glad that he did.
He can continue making and releasing awesome music without any of the BS that he had to put up with while he was around Al.

I don't know. I heard the original version of that album (whatever that was, demo maybe?) and it was a HUGE letdown. Save a couple of decent songs (pretty much just the ones Chris sings on), it was pretty bland/generic. Hopefully the final album is better, but that demo's gonna need a lot of work to make a good-great album.

I know sound-wise they are different, but an artist can change sounds and still use the same moniker. I meant more like are there any differences personnel-wise, or are they both just Paul but utilizing different equipment/sounds? Regardless, all 3 albums are fantastic and I'll eat up anything Paul shits out at this point.

As long as it isn't anything like Primitive Race I'll be happy.
I mean the amount of talent that worked on PM they should be ashamed that they released that album.
That was a huge disappointment after all the hype and teasing.

I'm not as afraid that Bells into Machines might follow the same path.
The E.P they released is pretty good.
Hopefully with the amount of time that they have taken to release the album means that they fully fleshed it out and it's decent.

Paul walked past our table entering the venue and I called out "Paul Barker kicks ass", and he smiled and gestured. Recognized it as me when I met him at the merch booth. Great show. :)

I got a Perfect Pair CD and the Sun Behind The Sun LP from him, and he was kind enough to sign a bunch of my Ministry CD booklets - I asked him to choose and he picked Filth Pig, The Fall single and DSOTSpoon - was surprised and said he never sees that one. He wasn't going to sign Animosity but I asked nicely and told him I enjoyed a lot of it and he relented. Mentioned Al basically disowned the album and we had a good laugh agreeing that Al says "lots of things". Also got a pic. Great guy. :)

I looked at recent set lists and you’ll be hard pressed to find much prior to Psalm 69, even then nothing really goes before Houses of the Mole.

Speaking of old Ministry, besides Live Necronomicon I bought recent vinyl presses of Psalm 69, The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste and The Land of Rape and Honey.

saw Ministry in a tiny venue in Wales a couple of years ago, basically the set opened with 7 new/bush trilogy songs & then they went into most of the set from that live VHS (the first one, minus breathe, burning inside and LORAH) + the usual psalm 69 songs. and bizarrely they finished with a Devo cover. Never got around to seeing them before & have to say I was pretty happy with that

Saw a recent interview where Al said he plans on reuniting RevCo with Chris for at least a song but possibly an album if the juices start flowing. That'd be really cool to hear something from the two of them again, but reunited RevCo without Paul? I don't know about that.

As long as Connelly is there it should be good. Barker is a driving force for a lot of the music influence during that time (in my opinion).

I agree, but on the other hand I thought Amerikkkant was pretty good, musically at least. Certainly better than anything off of any of Al's Revco "reunion" albums. Connelly's Cocksure vocals over that kind of production could be very cool.

Musically Twilight Zone is awesome. The entire album is modern Ministry meets early 90's Ministry. It works and has atmosphere. However the lyrical direction and content is so cringe worthy.

I love all forms of Ministry but they lost me from Relapse on. It's like Al switched on the try hard activation button and the band has circled the drain ever since. Relapse, From Beer to Eternity and Amerikkkant are all dogshit lyrically and visually. I actually dug the Bush trilogy and Under Cover. I REALLY loved Rio Grande Blood also.

However when I see this:

This is most likely. Honestly, just Cocksure + Paul would be the closest thing to a real Revolting Cocks reunion album we could ask for. Throw Billy in there for good measure too. That would be great.

I agree 100%. They made Wayne's wife sound like a Yoko Ono situation, and now that she has passed away, they are all about a reunion (probably has a lot to do with not having to pay her royalties as Wayne's next of kin is my guess). No doubt he's had a chat with Paul, which is nice, but is anyone else actually going to commit to this? I'm not going to be negative on this though... say something does actually happen... what would it be? Full on old-school Ministry revival? Will Al want to keep the current band together but with added Book Club goodness? Personally I'm going to wish for a full super group revival. Ditch the new guys (sorry new guys), Bill back in on drums, guest spots from Ogre, Luc van Acker, Richard 23 even... that really would be awesome.

Went and saw Ministry two nights ago and managed to make it up to the rail (a first for me at any concert). Man, Al looked really bored and would twirl his microphone in his hand while pacing back and forth on stage. Makes me wonder what it was like at the shows back in the late 80's early 90's. Anyways, I had worked a 10h shift that morning and was pretty worn out so I found myself yawning uncontrollably which annoyed the guitar player so he threw a pic at me and hit me on the forehead. I guess I deserve that since I was on the rail and must have looked insanely bored (much like Al) during the first half of the set. Sadly, the second half of the set had what I consider to be "good Ministry" and even those songs were lackluster.

With what I've been noticing from a few YouTube videos of Ministry concerts this year and last year so far, I've definitely been missing out. I hope to see more songs from Filth Pig and Dark Side of the Spoon and What About Us. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Every Day Is Halloween being performed at all in spite of it differing from the original version. The fact that Filth Pig, Supermanic Soul and Bad Blood got played at all got me all hyped/psyched. I've also noticed that as time passes by, these are the following albums I'd like to hear more songs from live. (As much as I like With Sympathy, I just know that's obviously going to be impossible.)

Twitch
Filth Pig
Dark Side of the Spoon

As much as I like The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, The Land of Rape and Honey, Psalm 69 and the entire George W. Bush trilogy, I'd still love to see more songs outside of those eras altogether. I'm also well-aware I'm not alone on this, but I'm definitely still feeling it.

Anyway, should I catch Ministry for the 3rd time, I hope I get that lucky. At least for the first two times, I was also lucky enough to catch a show in the spring and the summer. Even though I don't go to concerts that much, I realized right away, that I'm always far more of a spring and summer person for concerts.

And well, I'm always interested to see what Ministry's up to. I'm also reminded to take in the fact that I even got to see Ministry after The Last Sucker. (I made sure to wait and see, but sometimes you never know, but at least I was glad to be proven wrong. I also found Relapse to be a bit more fun than I thought whenever I look back at it again.)

Now that I'm into encoding my Ministry (etc.) CDs, I'm working my way through the RevCo portion... and holy shit does "Something Wonderful" sound like "Burning Inside" to my ears. Like an early or alternate take of it. Just made it through the Ryko 2004 remastered and B,S&Q(r). Still have Cocked and Loaded, Cocktail Mixxx and Sex-O Olympico to go.

And then 18 other discs of Ministry/Alien to go.

So I had a cool experience this past weekend...

My friend and I went out to Arizona to catch the Padres play in spring training. I was looking for places to get a drink when I noticed there was a Merkin Vineyard in Scottsdale. We made our way over and yup, it was one of Maynard's & Co. store fronts. We went in and ordered some glasses of wine. The Tarzan Red was amazing! (pictured below)

https://i.imgur.com/U6MQwqk.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/AkaSbhf.jpg

As we are sitting there enjoying our drinks, the bartender and I strike up a conversation about the music that was playing overhead. I asked "does Maynard control the setlists of songs that play overhead?" - He replied "yup, he has a bunch of playlists that rang from industrial rock all the way to 50's commercial jingles...hey, hold on a second. Dirk knows more about this stuff than I do" - at this point a guy comes out from the kitchen and we strike up a conversation about music. I told him how I was a big nine inch nails fan and how I love industrial music. He went to tell me that he was actually involved with Uncle Al and helped out during TLORAH recording sessions. He also told me how he was heavily involved with Pigface during the late 80's and into the 90's and for the next hour he shared all sorts of stories about being on tour with Ministry/RevCo/PigFace. I swear, I wish I could have recorded it. He's stories were so funny/unbelievable and he was very approachable. Long story short, if you find your way to the new Scottsdale location of Merkin Vineyards, ask to chat with Dirk Flanigan (https://twitter.com/dirkflanigan?lang=en) if the traffic is slow.

Did anyone manage to brave the lines and actually get the record +tickets? I was going to go to Amoeba but apparently people started camping out around 4pm the day before, so I figured I wouldn’t even have a fair chance and decided to pass up on it. I did get the free tickets, which don’t guarantee entrance so I who knows

UPDATE: ticket claimed

Is anyone here in the NYC area in need of a VIP single for the show tomorrow? If so, I may have one available to give away.

Only real caveat is that you would need to arrive sufficiently early to enter with me, as the potential spare is registered in my name.

PM me if interested; I should know for certain later tonight or early tomorrow if the ticket is in fact available.

I'm incredibly glad I was able to make it out to the Brooklyn show last night. Some seem to have developed unrealistic expectations about what the advertised "Wax Trax-era setlist" would entail; I got exactly what I wanted (short of a reunion with Paul, naturally).

The overwhelming majority of Al's post-2003 output has left me cold, so I haven't bothered catching a tour since Rio Grande Blood. While I'm happy for him that he's found what appears to be a commercially sustainable path, it's not just not for me - especially in a live setting. As such, I wasn't willing to commit to this show without first seeing the Chicago setlist. If anyone is similarly on the fence but trying to stay spoiler-free, it should be safe to say it's an undiluted, classic thrash-era set. If that excites you in the least, these shows are worth an effort to catch.

Thankfully, Al and friends also delivered with good cheer and energy, and the crowd responded in kind. Al appeared in great spirits (except for a brief interval when his vape pen malfunctioned) and looked quite healthy. Presumably he's benefiting from whatever genetic mutation rendered Keith Richards nigh-immortal. The other band members admittedly faded into the background from my perspective, though I intend that as a compliment - they executed classic material with vigor and generally avoided unnecessary embellishment. While being on the rail was pretty low-intensity, it felt like everyone behind was responding enthusiastically for the duration - and someone even managed a successful stage dive, thankfully not on top of me. It was also great meeting @imail724 (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=207) and having some company for a change!

In light of all this, finally being able to see Industrial Accident could have just been icing on the cake, though it was quite a bit more than that. At a mere 95 minutes covering more than three decades, I was inevitably left wanting more from a label lore and trivia perspective. However, for the casual viewer - to the extent they exist for a feature-length documentary about a relatively obscure record label that's been defunct for a couple decades - I think Julia Nash made the right call to prioritize a brisk narrative. She also succeeded in painting a vivid and engaging portrait of Jim and Dannie, to the point that I felt the obvious tragedy of their decades-premature deaths much more acutely afterwards. It would have been incredible to hear a first-hand account of all the "signings" (not that anyone ever signed anything), successes and failures, how they sustained a relationship that was both personal and professional, etc. - but they were robbed of the chance to speak directly. How incredible then that Julia gave them the next best thing and assembled a tribute that will rightfully endure along with the music they helped propagate.

EDIT: Someone's got a pretty great recording of the full show up already:

Okaaay...

So I picked up that Trax! Box (https://ministryband.bandcamp.com/album/ministry-trax-box-digital-collection) that Cleopatra put out a few years ago and... I'm happy with it. I wanted to pick-up the corrected pressing of the Side Trax CD by Ryko but Discogs didn't have any... so... may as well just replace the whole 5-disc series, along with Twelve Inch Singles with this new box set but also get rarities and a concert 12" as well.

I like the book that comes with it, but if you read it now you have to realize it was right before Al started to embrace his With Sympathy era...

Had no idea that there was a dub version of Supernaut.

The vinyl is good in quality. No defects with mine and has a good inherent volume.

So yeah, if you wanted to binge on, like... 10 hours of early Ministry (etc.), check it out.

Now that's a setlist i can get behind!

It's probably the best Ministry setlist I have ever seen. It's like something straight out of the 90s. I would totally go see Ministry again if that was the regular setlist.
I saw 2 shows (2004 solo show and a festival show in 2015), and that was more than enough for me because I can't get into his new stuff. I appreciate the fact he is still going strong and making music at his age, but the music just isn't what it used to be.

He looks great for his age though. Considering all the years of drugs and alcohol he's done.

I was in line for the Brooklyn show at 4:10, which left me maybe 30ish people from the front of the VIP line. I’d guess there were at least 40-50 people in the GA line at that time. Either way, definitely a good call to arrive reasonably early.

Separately, looks like Austin didn’t get LORAH. Maybe it was a last minute call, but if there had been any chance to plan for a slightly shorter set, it should have been a no-brainer to skip one of the warhorses instead - So What being top of my list.

What’s the story between Al and Paul? I don’t know any details minus the fact that Paul was sick of Al’s drug use. Is there more to the story than that?

Disclaimer, I could be off a bit on the details here but in Al's book (going on memory here) he basically accuses Paul, Chris Connelly and Bill Rieflin of stealing from him and taking over the band. Like they were concerned about the bands finances and the drug use preventing the band from moving forward (god forbid) or something like that. So, Barker (according to Al) took over the band for a stretch of years, from Palsm 69 to Animositiasomina, as he was sober. Al eventually got 'clean-ish' and felt that Barker and his 'book club' friends (Rieflin/Connelly) had taken the band in the wrong direction. Leads up to Barker leaving and Ministry turning into a metal act for the better part of the last 15 years. Al held a pretty big grudge for whatever reason. He was asked in an interview about Barker and said he was '....only the bassist and Spinal Tap had like 15 of those.." Then when pressed about the drummers in the band he said "Whatever..." But time heals wounds and the initial anger of it all passes, and I guess he ultimately thought he was being taken advantage of by his band mates (I look at it like they were 'working around Al' and not with him because he had a hard time contributing due to his drug issues). I am sure, looking back at it now, he probably views it a little bit differently and not with the harsh lenses he did at first.

imail724
04-22-2019, 09:25 AM
I know when Al and Chris reconciled there was a whole thing about Al's ex-wife manipulating him while he was at his lowest, and essentially turning him and his friends/bandmates against each other. If that was true for Chris, I'm sure it played a role with Paul as well.

Is that based on official USPS confirmation, or just the email from WT! titled "Your order has shipped"?

If the latter, I would temper your expectations - some folks on the WT! Facebook group have had orders stuck in "pre-shipment" for weeks. That said, it stands to reason that things should be moving more smoothly now that the tour is wrapped up.

This is Cleo we’re talking about... some other variant or a CD release must be around the corner. They’re shameless with their dribble out approach, which drives me nuts. I never would have bought Necronomicon (ugh, that name again) on the original vinyl if I’d known a CD release was planned.

Well, that's common practice with a lot of labels. I used to think Cleo was a joke until the Trax Box came out, compiling virtually everything Al did on Wax Trax wrapped up in a nice little bow. I only recently acquired it and man is this thing legit.

I hadn't personally witnessed something quite this egregious among the other labels whose output I track, but I'm not surprised to hear you've seen others do it.

I've always been torn between appreciating Cleo for bringing over a lot of great European EBM back in the day and being annoyed at their marketing choices (e.g., the chopped-up and hideously repackaged Leæther Strip releases). The fact that they've provided an outlet for Al's archives is commendable, though...but it won't stop me from nitpicking :D

This makes me cock an eyebrow. The first uploads came out around the time the Trax Box came out, and now Industial Accident drops and this shows up around the same time.

According to Setlist.fm the full setlist for that night is:

1. Hizbollah
2. All Day (Up on YT)
3. Do You Even Like It?
4. The Nature of Love (Up on YT)
5. Revenge (Up on YT with some cuts)
6. (Everyday Is) Halloween
7. I'll Do Anything for You
8. I Wanted to Tell Her (Up on YT)
9. Here We Go
10. I'm Falling
11. Ricky's Hand (Fad Gadget cover)

Encore:
12. Work for Love (Up on YT)

I wonder if this is being teased to drive up hype for some sort of official release or what? Someone capitalizing on waves of Wax Trax Ministry interest?

Just compared the 1990 reissued CD to the 2014 reissues vinyl of "Twitch"... the vinyl sounds so much more textured and rich compared to the CD. So glad I trusted my instinct+experience (generally, electronic music from the 1980s sounds better on vinyl, even the original scarcity thin 1980s vinyl, than the 1980s CD version of the same album, probably the same for all genres but this is one I can talk about) and picked it up to give it a shot.

(partially picked up also because of Al's talking about it in the WaxTrax "Industrial Accident" documentary)

What album are you talking about?

Ooh, good to know, that one's been on my list for a while but I still haven't picked it up yet. TMIATTTT and LORAH both sound great though.

Totally agreed on those two (have originals... but tempted to picked up the MOV recent ones) . I was actually surprised that Filth Pig (2014 vinyl reissue) sounded so good on vinyl. Opens it up a bit more, lets you get into the grunge of it (or as I put it to another friend, Filth Pig is the album at the back of the bus after ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ was performed on-stage).

Another indication that he's completely bananas.

Just so frustrating, he used to be amazing. Then the metal happened.

The bit in the Wax Trax! doc about that concert and recording are interesting... :)

FYI, my RevCo order shipped already. Guess they decided to get them all pressed up and ready to go before putting them up for sale. Also, the listing says they are limited, but doesn't say how limited like some of their other listings say.

edit: this got me thinking, does anybody have the link to the Wendy's commercial from a few years ago that was obviously inspired by Work For Love?

Hey i missed the Shasta commercial, and that's awesome.

But I've been wondering what they will be playing on the Slayer tour. Hopefully keeping it old school,. missing/diety and burning inside. I saw them in 2003 and they were thankfully playing the classics still (BREATHE AND STIGMATA FTW)
