Hi, here goes nothing, I'm "the 8-bit NIN guy", I did Pretty Eight Machine (http://inversephase.bandcamp.com/album/pretty-eight-machine) (all of Pretty Hate Machine on eight different 8-bit things). Right to the point, there's a Special Edition of the album for kickstarter backers and I'm late delivering it. One of my holdups is trying to finish up SE audio, but I'm also trying to do a nice booklet to come with the SE. After a chain of events regarding my recent HTDA cover track's image here (http://inversephase.bandcamp.com/track/between-the-traces), I had some good ideas, but I need serious help with photography to make it work. So, I'm asking for help. First of all, not sure if I've really "confirmed" this anywhere, but I would like to do a TDS and Fragile tribute in the future....the question is when, the answer is "I dunno"....but there's a chance for a few different photography/artwork styles here. Again making it easy: I want photos "in the style of" certain NIN eras — that is, PHM/TDS/Fragile — but I want them to incorporate the consoles I use with the tracks. Explained further: PHM's front cover is a distorted pic of part of a farm combine with some nasty interlacing artifacts, so I parodied that with a chip. Now I have an entire booklet so I want the inside to be worth looking at, not just white-on-black, so why not do the same thing with parts of consoles? Like, display a distorted pic of (or point a video camera at) a keyboard, joystick port, or cartridge slot of some console/computer on a CRT with nasty interlacing, then take a photo of that to imitate the effect on the PHM cover. For each system I would explain the details about the track related to the system pictured in the background. One system per page. Make sense? If you'd rather not try this idea, my other ideas are "console/computer in an industrial/gritty (rusty/metal/stone/dirt/etc) scene" for the TDS album, and then maybe images of consoles cut off by other images like the Fragile cover for that album. But priority one is finishing P8M:SE. I'm poor and I don't have any fucking money, but if you help me with any one of the albums I'm happy to give you a final copy of where your work ends up and of course proper attribution (in booklet, link on bandcamp where the image is, shoutout on twitter or something, whatever as long as it's doable). So far I have synt4x (the guy that took my HTDA cover's pic), @MAD (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=136) , @bgalbraith (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=10) , and @robot32 (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=2194) onboard, and possibly @Leviathant (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=1). This is a group effort; I don't want there to be a lot of pressure on anyone and then we can also sort of "fan-source" the images...make it more of a community thing...get some variety in the mix, etc. Maybe this isn't a good idea, but I won't know until I ask. Anyway, I'm sorry for the wall of text / I'm so wordy but I hope this gets the point across. Ask me questions! Let's do this! Etc!

I don't own any of the consoles you used to create music, BUT.. I'm pretty sure I can do something. What albums do you have in mind and do we have a deadline?

I am a huge fan of yours and I would love to help you out with this!

I don't own any of the consoles you used to create music, BUT.. I'm pretty sure I can do something. What albums do you have in mind and do we have a deadline? All of that information is in my top post. Right now my top priority is "distorted/interlaced to hell pictures of consoles in the style of PHM". Don't worry about not having the console, you can always just use a picture from the internet or I can send you photos of my systems specifically, but the goal is that the image will be mangled to hell and unrecognisable by the time you're done.

The PHM-style stuff I want to get done right away, or as soon as possible. The Special Edition album is way behind schedule and I want to get it done and out. If I can get all the images done sometime this month, I would be thrilled.

The TDS- and Fragile-style stuff doesn't have a deadline. I haven't started on those albums yet, so they're really far off.

I am a huge fan of yours and I would love to help you out with this!Aw, thanks.

Got your PM and I can see what I can do. My availability to do anything art related is kinda shit right now since I just started an overnight job that takes a good 12+ hours of my day 5 days a week. I might be of more help for your later projects.
MAD is an awesome guy, he's done a lot of art for various NIN fan projects (nearly every DVD and CD I've downloaded and burned a copy of, or in the case of AVOTT bought both versions of).
If I get anything to shoot your way, I will.

Awesome man, thanks for any and all help you can provide.

If any of you guys know anyone else that could (and would want to) do stuff like this, by the way, feel free to loop them in!

As an update. I'm trying to track down some consoles. I might be able to borrow a couple in the near future.

I saw your reddit thread! Almost all of the systems mentioned there are so exotic! The "Terminator" sounds hilarious, but also that NES disquised as an SMS? And the HC sounds nice and weird too. =]

Someday, I'll gave to get my hands on some of those....for now, let's stick to what people know.

I can supply pictures of the US versions if you think that will help. That way you know what I'm expecting things to look like. For the most part things are the same; the Game Boy, NES, Sega Master System, all look alike... the MSX I use is european to begin with......and even though I didn't use a Genesis, even though it's called the Megadrive in Europe, the cartridge slot looks the same, for example.... stuff like that.

I just want to repeat for the sake of doing so, my first priority is getting PHM:SE done. The interlacing and distortion can be done live or photoshopped afterwards, I don't really care as long as I find the effect aesthetically pleasing =] But it should look like the closeup on the cover of PHM, except the picture is of a part of a game console or computer.

Thanks so much for all your help.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I'll send you an initial stab I took at a PHM-era GameBoy.

Hey all,
bgalbraith has my idea for the P8M images almost nailed (puns, sorry)... I'm looking for something about halfway between these.... the interlacing doesn't have to be quite that pronounced (maybe somewhere between 20-50% of that, and I think I will be changing up the color scheme on this, but overall, hopefully this will help people see what I'm going for:
http://i.imgur.com/545Z8XM.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/bsNhkjG.jpg
If you can't tell, it's a gameboy =]

But yeah, if anyone participating can reproduce something like this with all of the consoles featured on the album, that's the goal.... I can help you either acquire images if you can't take snaps of the consoles yourself, or show you the exact hardware you need to find, just let me know what you need!

I will deliver the photos in batches. They will have the PHM idea but they might or might not look like the actual cover. I'm going for artsy while keeping the original idea.
Kinda like this:

That's really awesome looking, too! I'm sure we can make this work; in those images I would mostly like to make the interlacing more noticeable, and of course they should be of consoles instead of what looks like gears, but I'm excited to see what you'll come up with.

Here's a list of the consoles used and some hires shots where I was able to find them if any of you guys need them, especially for MAD since he may need to find correct regions or non-clones something like that =]

1. C64 (Head Like I/O, SID):
- front: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/Commodore-64-Computer.png
- rear: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c9/Commodore-64-Back.jpg
- alternate (Commodore 128): http://scacom.bplaced.net/Collection/128/1283.jpg
- alternate (64C revision): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/40/Commodore_C64C.JPG

I don't care about region here, the cases varied so much over all of the models it really doesn't matter.

2. Atari 800 (Atarible Lie):
- front: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/35/Atari_800.jpg
- alternate (XL model): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bf/Atari-800XL.jpg
- alternate (XE model): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Atari-130XE.jpg

I believe the first Atari XE was called the 800XE in Europe, but really the region doesn't matter much on this one either, and we could always just not photograph the badging.

3. NES (Downloadin' It): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/NES-Console-Set.jpg

The NES is visually the same for europe and US models.

4. MSX+SCC (SYNCtified): This is a tricky one, because the SCC chip is really what makes this track what it is, but the MSX is also in use, so I wanted this to be a picture of an SCC cartridge in an MSX.... but barring that we could always just use a picture of my devcart: http://www.msx.org/wiki/images/b/b8/MegaFlashROMSCC%2B_cartridge.png

Actually, here's a picture more like what I was going for: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/t-hLqqS9rL31YCHtVTw00nZFyBjYdI1zd_Cn6m5_lfbRiLNy_r9B DFrPdG9uTzWb-obX83EVcoGT0DP1RUQNu45LwIeXCsT5XyKb240Dcr5UCW8kw2Q dccNp9g -- this is the SD model which I don't have, I'm probably being pedantic at this point =]

5. Sega Master System (Something You Didn't Ever Have): Either of these would be suitable...
- SMS 1: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/Sega-Master-System-Set.jpg
- SMS 2: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/Master_System_II.jpg

6. VRC6 (Kinda I Want 2A03): Kind of like #4, Castlevania 3 (or MADARA, or Esper Dream 2) in a Famicom.

The Famicom looks like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Famicom-Console-Set.jpg

We could always feature the chip, which is this one (bottom): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/archive/f/fe/20061124223314!Vrc6.jpg

7. SID: See #1

8. That's What I Chipped: See #2

9. Gameboy (The Lonely Byte): The Gameboy looked the same everywhere, I'd like to use the original "brick" gameboy for this, but bgalbraith may have this picture already done, so don't worry too much unless you want to give it a shot anyway:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/Nintendo_Gameboy.jpg

10. OPLL (Token Ringfinger): To keep this one simple we should probably not find a picture of an MSX with an FM-PAC in it, although we could use a picture of an MSX with MSX-MUSIC built-in like this one: http://www.msx.org/wiki/images/1/1f/Fs-a1gt_front.jpg

The alternative is using a Sega Mark III with FM expansion: http://www.segadriven.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/08.jpg

I'd rather not use the Japanese SMS because even though it has the FM built-in, it doesn't look different enough from the US model.

So yeah, feel free to play with those images (or the systems pictured) and let me know what you come up with. =] I'll get your picture to the right place and stuff.

here are two MSX-with-SCC-cart images that I have permission to use if you guys want to mess with them:

I envision probably a cropped section of part of the cartridge, part of the keyboard, the LEDs that in that area, and maybe part of the rensha slider.

I'd be really happy to help you out with your artwork. To clarify, do you only want to use pictures of the systems you worked with? I have an old SNES and a Gameboy/Gameboy Pocket/GBA I can photograph.
If you only want images of the consoles you used in making the album, can you please tell me which ones are already taken so I don't overlap with someone else?

If you're interested in seeing some of my work, go to opensourceresistance.net, where two of my [old] artworks are featured. They're the two black and white highly distorted pieces three rows from the bottom.

Hey, your art is excellent! I do want to keep the art for P8M to systems featured on the album, I feel that will keep the artwork relevant and the project tight. So far everyone that has been giving me artwork is tops, but I do want to make sure everything ties together, so I'm going to ask that everyone please not be offended if a piece doesn't end up getting used in the way you intended (or not used at all).

This post has the systems I'm expecting specifically: http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/1783-Call-for-photography-for-current-and-future-IP-projects?p=94427#post94427 (or just scroll up)

Hey there, yes it is. Things are a little slow going right now because life kind of took another shit on me, but progress is being made.

If you didn't join the kickstarter, the only way to get the P8M SE tracks will be to download it from bandcamp, and it will be separate from the regular edition. So if you were thinking about picking up P8M, don't worry about a "better" physical version coming out soon that will make you regret your purchase.
