One of the best fucking rock band right now. I just love all the shit they've been putting out.

This year they released their seventh album Wasting Light. They recorded the whole fucking album on tape in Dave's garage. Pat Smear is officially a full time member again, Krist Novoselic played bass on one song and the producer was Butch Vig. Ex-Nirvana members rule!

They also did some cool music videos, a documentary (out now on DVD and Blu-ray), a garage tour and a worldwide run from spring.
Such an amazing band. Please share your thoughts!

If we're talking about mainstream rock bands, Foo Fighters are the cream of the crop. They're the ultimate singles band, they play every show like it's their last, and for the most part, their albums are fucking solid. I liked Wasting Light, and I hope they actually pay a show this tour in which I can see them. Fuck Courtney Love.

Saw them in Vancouver at the end of October, and it was awesome!
They definatly give you your money's worth concert wise, they played for 3 hours!
The show was alot of fun. I was stuck in seats, and I can't stand being at a concert in seats, but it was still ALOT of fun!

Wasting light is their best release since "The Colour and the Shape".

they put on a helluva show this time around, but there were waaaay too many extended singalongs/interludes/whatever throughout the show. It reminded me of what Green Day does now. Just play the song, no one needs you to add3 minutes of nonsense to them. I also could have done without the guitar solo off...silly. Could have heard 4 or 5 more rare songs or something instead.

Always hate posting things like this but, it sure would be cool if I had a high quality mp3 of Darling Nikki... cooler than paying $100+ for the single it appeared on. Thanks in advance, for what? I don't know, nudge nudge, wink wink.

I used to dislike the Foo Fighters, but only because I was irritated at the overplay of The Best of You when that came out. I don't mind that song but I've grown to like them now. Wasting Light is a good album, love The Colour and The Shape.

Ok, excluding the commercial, i do think they are great, love the first album eve thought they weren't technically a "band" in that moment... I also like "The Colour and The Shape" (but i think it's a bit overrated) and the awesome "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace" (this one is my favorite).

I'll bet if Dave Grohl died today, his legacy would eclipse Cobain's.

I would hope! At least he can play his instrument(s) and I can understand what is coming out of his mouth. Can't say the same for Cobain.

I'll bet if Dave Grohl died today, his legacy would eclipse Cobain's.

Kurt's a member of the 27 club, never going to happen.

Dave's career with the Foos and with everything else is like the Frasier of Rock music, in that no one else has had quite the second act after being part of something so ground-changing. Not even Paul McCartney who despite making great relevant music since his old band broke up, is still quite tethered to it's legacy.

Good god, nine covers. The complete picture looks pretty awesome, though.

Foo Fighters always insist on doing these ridiculous bundles - a bunch of them come with a fucking puzzle.

I really don't know what cover I want to get. The New York one is pretty nice.

08-11-2014, 12:13 PM
Yeah, the NY and Hollywood ones seem to look the coolest, or at least stand by themselves the best without feeling like the rest of the picture/context is missing.

Will probably opt for one of those. Haha, kinda wish I could get one of those puzzles w/o the shirt or deluxe mega-package.

Regardless, really looking forward to this and quite curious to hear what it sounds like.

8 song album? What is this, an EP? I remember when artists used to record 13-16 track CD's. Seems like albums have been getting progressively shorter as time goes on.

ManOfAtom
08-11-2014, 02:10 PM
It's still 45 minutes long!
You're about to get an older forum member tell you about when 8-10 tracks was the norm too.

I'd rather a short, great album, then a load of filler.

I've always had more respect for the Foo Fighter than I liked their music. They always seemed like a band who genuinely loved what they do and didn't Kanye them selves too seriously.

I was hearing on the radio that for their new album they are recording each song in a different city. That's pretty cool.

I think comparing Dave to Kurt is pointless. The whole genius of that little guy was that his vocals and guitar playing had a tonne of soul in them despite their technical shortfalls.

The shortness of the album is the whole point, though. Eight tracks, eight cities, eight weeks, eighth album. That's the theme, that's the concept.

And plus, it's forty-five minutes. That's nowhere near an EP.

Yeah, I think Wasting Light was their best album since The Colour and the Shape. It was classic Foo. With Pat Smear seemingly a full time member again, seems like this incarnation of the Foo's sure can write a good tune. Looking forward to hearing what's in store this time around. With the album only 8 tracks, and the total running time of 45 mins, that's almost 6 minutes a song. Those are some long foo songs, but that's cool, I like long songs that kind of progress as the song goes on.

FF does Black Sabbath on night one. I must say, that was fun to watch :D

They're reeeeally dragging out debuting any of their new material (other than during those Sonic Highways snippets). AFAIK, no full songs are available yet (or have even been played), right? The short clip of "The Feast and the Famine" sounds pretty cool though.

I'm guessing they'll do some type of guest-singer thing each night and then debut a song on Friday, or something. It feels weird watching Letterman, since I haven't seen a full ep in maybe 5 years.

Yep, I would do the same if I wasn't 3+ hours away. The other thing that makes that challenging is that it looks like it's basically "Trent" rules for the tickets (i.e. need to have your name on the ticket or have your guest with you on entry).

I've seen ppl get lucky with that at NIN shows though, so it's certainly possible. Best of luck!

I signed up for the FF forum like a decade ago, wasn't a very active user. But it's become somewhat of a running joke, because every year at midnight on my Birthday, I get a Happy Birthday e-mail sent out from the Foo Fighters message board. And earlier this year, it was a few hours before my birthday or something and my girlfriend wishes me happy birthday, and I was like "you know it's not my birthday yet" and she was like "close enough" and I replied with "It's not my Birthday until the Foo Fighters wish me Happy Birthday" and she was confused...

However, in a few hours I got the Happy Birthday e-mail and then it all made sense to her. So, that's kind of a running joke.

I totally relate to that birthday email story...always cracks me up. I signed up there in 2001 and was fairly active for a bit. Some pretty cool people, but then when FF became more popular the younger fans started posting and it just gets messy at times. I use that postboard much like this one, for info on a band I enjoy. And in the early days if you lived in or around Los Angeles it was great because you got info on secret shows and they did contests and drawings for tickets. Saw a few great shows because of that site. Paid 10 bucks for the One By One cd release party at the Wiltern. So being a member of a website for a band you like can have value, doesn't mean you have to be an active poster.

The lyric video/thing at the end really puts into perspective how much they took away from all the interviews with Rick Nielsen, Steve Albini, Buddy Guy, and others in that scene. I remember watching the lyrics on screen going "shit, he really put thought into his choice of words here."

I agree. It was cool seeing the lyrics and connecting them all back to what these guys said in the interviews.

I liked that so much of the Chicago episode was personal to the band, particularly to Dave. I wonder if they'll be able to maintain that level of connection/deep story throughout the series -- it was so much more interesting to me than just a mini-doc on the city's musical history.

I have to say, though, that I was uncomfortable with the level of call-back in the lyrics. I guess I assumed the album came first, and that they were then inspired to do this documentary. But having the lyrics so directly "inspired" makes it seem like the album is the secondary product. I really hope it doesn't end up feeling forced and insincere.

I don't think they will have a problem with those personal connections. Next up is DC. Dave grew up there. There's Seattle, obvious. LA, where they all live.

Love that this is a concept album. Also, really cool/weird that I've been listening to the Foo's for close to 20 years...

My Foo story/fan boy moment:

My wife and I got into NYC for a little vacation and we walked by the NBC studios and my wife was talking to me about something but i spot someone VERY familiar to me... Nate and Pat just looking at the bootleg stuff in front of the studio. I DART across the road to geek out and just tell Nate and Pat I'm a big fan from Miami, come back down, etc. It was right around when "The Pretender" was just released, but I was busy with work and didn't realize they had a new album coming out. They were playing SNL that same night.

My wife joined me after she realized i just left her walking and asked who I was talking to and they laughed and we left after i thanked them for their time. Just great guys. I completely forgot to ask for a photo with them. Didn't matter. Made my trip, plus I saw QotSA later that night at the MSG amphitheater too.

Washington, DC show on Friday. Damn -- they changed the rules so you have to be at the venue and pay cash. If that's how they did Chicago, I probably would've been able to go.
http://on.fb.me/1DxmWcL

I might get lucky if they keep this up; I know people in Seattle and LA who could potentially get tickets. Crossing my fingers that they keep it up for the next 6 weekends/episodes :)

Edit: btw, (long shot, I know) if anyone is planning on getting tickets at the Black Cat venue today and doesn't already have a +1, let me know. ;) Would be happy to meet you there/pay you back.

Just checked the setlist for the Cubby Bear show to see if this was something I wanted to make a trip down to Seattle for (in the event a Seattle show shows up), but the setlist wasn't anything amazing. I would have preferred more new material... But, I understand what they are going for on this mini club tour. They want to play the new song that they made in that city and only that new song on each different night. Makes sense. I'll just save the trip and wait for the the Foos come up here for their own full show.

Seems like a summer 2015 North American tour may be in the works anyway. Pollstar (www.pollstar.com) has listed a new foo date for this summer in Chicago on August 29th at Wrigley Field. I doubt this is going to be a random one off show. Seems like a late summer/fall North American tour may be in the cards.

Yep, sounds like that will be the case. The page for the Wrigley show (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/ticketing/ff.jsp) has a "Sonic Highways World Tour," which makes it sound like it'll be quite a large tour, and I'd imagine that would include the US. Wonder what type of venues they'd be playing (arenas, amphitheaters, both?).

Still, I'd really love to be at one of the (presumably) 8 super tiny shows that they will probably do. Pretty much impossible though; I guess the line formed in DC for tickets pretty much as soon as it was announced online.

The presale for the Wrigley Field show starts on Friday morning. General sale starts Monday.

Hopefully they play one in the NY area.

When does the NY show air? Maybe I'll have better luck with the "stand in line for tickets" deal.

Supposedly, this is the order of airdates. If they do small shows, they'd likely be announced early that week (Tuesday-ish?).
Oct 31st - Nashville
Nov 7th - Austin
Nov 14th - LA
Nov 21st - NOLA
Nov 28th - Seattle
Dec 5th - NY

Best of luck if they do end up doing a NY show! I'd suggest turning on notifications from their FB/Twitter feeds if you haven't already, since you'll want to know the second they're announced.

Strange that they would have NY at the very end when they were just literally in Chicago, which geographically, makes sense to head to NY next instead of trekking from the east coast all the way to the furthest point North-West (Seattle) just to head back East again.

In fact, the whole schedule is pretty messed up now that I think about it... Nashville and then to Austin when NOLA is right there, then off to LA and back tracking to NOLA just to head back west for Seattle...

Yeah, it's bizarre, but I guess if they're doing crazy stuff like playing insanely-small venues and just being awesome in general, then traveling a weird path isn't really out of the question.

They're also playing Voodoo Fest around Halloweekend (which is literally in NOLA); yet that's the week of Nashville, not NOLA.

Technically it's all speculation right now. But the odds seem very good, esp. since they tweeted "1 down, 7 to go" or something, a few days ago.

One of my friends was lucky and scored P1 seats, so at least I can fall back on those if I'm unable to find GA tickets for a not-insane price. I have 10 months to find them, I guess.

Trying again Monday for GA. Best of luck, everyone!

I'm going to assume it's going to be a full blown North American tour, but since the album is focused on these 8 cities, they are going to release/market those ones first and then the rest of the dates will be filled in along the way.

ALSO, last night's setlist in DC was BADASS. This set was better than the Chicago one and 29 songs!!

Just finished Ep 2 also. Seems like DC might have the least "meat" to talk about out of all of the cities and was mainly just included because of Dave's growing up nearby. Seems like the end note was basically "no one really knows the bands that came out of here, but they did influence the bands that people do know now."

Fully enjoyed the ep, but if I had to guess it'll be the least riveting of the mini-series. TV-wise, probably would've put this one as maybe #6 of 8. Maybe it worked best as the 2nd track on the album?

Wonder how they decided to order this entire process, anyway (recording order, album/TV order, etc).

Stream the album here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/11/07/foo-fighters-dave-grohl-album-stream-sonic-highways_n_6123984.html

I'm sad to report that this album will not get anymore rotation from me though. This was one of my most anticipated albums of the year and I am severely let down.
The songs are just very boring and just generic rock songs. They don't have that same Foo Fighters catch that their previous albums have.

"Something from Nothing" and "Feast and the Famine" are the closest you get to classic Foo Fighters and then the album just takes a nose-dive from there.
All the other songs are not memorable and just meander on as background noise.

I knew it was going to be hard to followup "Wasting Light" as that album is treading on "The Colour and the Shape" territory... but... this is a very disappointing record.

Dave Grohl has become what he feared the most... the most generic musician in Rock 'n Roll.

I'm casual FF fan. Wasting Light was amazing recording and I agree that this is nowhere near that quality but I wouldn't call it complete let down. It isn't very exciting but I still think it's solid rock album.

I don't see how anyone watching the doc can say this record was generic. Considering the different styles of songs, the various guests, I think it's a huge triumph for what they set out to accomplish. It's too early to gauge how much I like it yet, but I can already tell it will rank higher for me than Wasting Light, but then again I wasn't huge on that like everyone else seemed to be. There was definitely nothing on that record as good as Something from Nothing.

The show is fantastic, but yes the record is pretty generic. Aside from the lyrics, the songs don't really even represent the cities that they were recorded in. They're just songs. None of them are necessarily bad but none are all that great either. Sure the guest spots help at times to give you a vibe, but the biggest example of the songs falling flat is the last track. Cool Joan Jett is on there? Where is she? It's a 7 minute power ballad that doesn't sound anything like New York Punk. I dig that song, but it's a completely failed attempt at recreating a certain scene and legacy. They are just simply standard Foo Fighters tracks with last minute guest spots recorded in various historical recording studios that were filmed for a fantastically interesting television series.

r_k_f
11-10-2014, 02:18 PM
I agree, the show is great.. the album, is ok. I like 50% of the album. As others have said though, the guest spots all seem like after thoughts. Even though each episode focus's on multiple styles of music, I wish some of the songs musically reflected at least one of 'em. They had what, three amaaaazing guitarists and you can barely pick them out on the 3 tracks? I still give Grohl & Co. a ton of credit though, this was a very cool thing to do as a concept..

I think maybe a Sound City / Sonic Highways hybrid is what we need, or at least what we were hoping for.

I've listened to "I am a River" twice now and both times I get to the end and I'm like "oh, wait, isn't Joan Jett on here?".. i'm guessing she's singing on the chorus and Dave's vocals are just overpowering hers?

i like being able to pick guests out audibly...

I gotta say (and others have said something similar), even though I don't really like the Foo Fighters that much (they're a little bland), I'm loving this series of documentaries. Great concept and execution, and good god it must have been hard to pull off. Can you imagine the amount of work and coordination involved in this project?!

Yeah, I agree, I'm not a Foo Fighters fan at all, and I'm not even a huge Dave Grohl fan, but I'm liking the documentary, I'm recording the series, and I'm enjoying learning about each city and the people and music from each city, etc. The stuff I learned about Nashville, alone, was worth it. This has to win an Emmy.

Managed to score a ticket to the show in Sydney Australia today. Will be there on vacation last 2 weeks of February, show aligned perfectly for when I was there, so why the hell not!

Ended up spending a little too high above my budget for this show though... Ended up with the highest priced ticketing level for a seat kind of by an accident. $200 a pop! (OUCH!) The GA Floor seats were even cheaper at $150... Was aiming for the cheap seats in the $92-120 range.

Logged right on from work at the sale time. Chose "Section B" for 2 seated tickets... Nothing... went back... chose "section C" (lower price level)... nothing... went back...
chose "best available" in the whole venue... nothing. Nothing at all 1 minute after they went on sale at a friggin Stadium of 50,000+ seats? Something is wrong...

I kept refreshing over and over under "best available" and always got nothing... To make matters worse there is this bullshit timer that you need to complete your purchase by and it doesn't reset by each new "page" you go to. So 38 seconds left on the clock and 2 really shitty seats in section C show up for $92 ones. I was like "sure, whatever... gotta grab something" but 38 seconds left... and I get kicked out and sent back to the queue. "Too many fans on the site now, please wait" FUCK THAT! I was in!!

Totally pissed off at this point... But I wait the queue line out, get back in |select 2 seats Best available... Row 11 beside the stage comes up, $200 a pop... Fuuuuck...
This is more than I wanted to spend on Foo Fighters... *watch the clock tick down*... if I throw these back in and try for another set, there is a chance I might not get anything again.... FUCK IT... *grabs credit card* I'll work some overtime to pay these tickets off, you only live once.

Yeah, been waiting for the US dates all day. I'm not sure if I should be excited or nervous now, because I can make a good handful of those shows ... but I'm guessing tickets will be extremely tough to get.

First presale is box office only, so that rules out that possibility since I'm not close enough to any of the venues. Going to have to cross my fingers for the online presale :)

Luckily I snagged tickets for the July 4th DC show awhile back, so at least I'll have that!

The way I see it, that's just more time to save a little here and there for merch and gas money. Besides, by then I'll be balls deep in schoolwork, so I'll probably appreciate the trip(s).

Throws me back to watching Back & Forth, when they talk about how far in advance they had to start selling Wembley Stadium tickets in like, 2007 or 2008. Now they've got a whole US tour that they're announcing almost a year in advance, a TV series, and Grohl is pretty much establishing himself even more as a rock 'n roll icon. Not sure I want to get up at 7am and lineup outside in the cold Saturday morning though... They have a "beat the bots" pre-sale this saturday at the box office venues to each city. Giving actual humans a shot at getting the best tickets as opposed to doing it online and having a scalper scalp them all up.

Regular sale is December 5th. I think i'll just deal with fighting off the bots on the internet in a warm heated environment.

It looks like each venue is a little different. I would honestly play it safe and, yes, get up before Jesus. I was debating driving 4 hours to St Paul, but I decided I wasn't that big of a diehard. If I had gone, I would have tried to get there and be parked by 7am.

Some venues are doing a lottery-type thing, probably cuz theyre assuming that a gazillion ppl will all get there at the same time in the morning. Some venues (like Xcel in StP) are "no camping allowed." Some have some crazy-ass complicated rules. I'm not on the Foo forums, but there's a good NA Tour thread I've been creeping on for awhile.

I mean like a real show... Like they're doing in all of the other goddamn cities. WHY WOULD THEY LEAVE THE BEST CITY OFF?!

May have something to do with them just playing the Voodoo Festival a few weeks back. NOLA may be in the radius clause for Austin City Limits though, which would exclude them from playing in the area. These dates make it pretty obvious at ACL, so that whole region gets screwed because of the festival date. Wouldn't be surprised to see them do Jazz Fest in April if that is the case.

I was at work a couple of blocks away when the sale happened, but a friend that I work with went at 12:30 when everything had died down and was able to score me a floor ticket, but he said that the people at the box office were saying that lower level was already sold out and most of the sides on the upper level were gone already from the Beat The Bots sale. There won't be much on the general sale, when that happens.

I think when coming directly through the venue, it's up the discretion of the venue whether or not to hold back 10% for presale or just run with it. In the case of the KC crowd, i'm betting they saw how many were there and just said "screw it, open it all up".

But Dave hinted on the Daily Show that there "may" be a second season. :)

In his interview in this month's Rolling Stone (the one with Dave on the cover), I think he says something along the lines of "I already know what we're going to do for our next album, and that's (X) years away. Nobody has done anything like it." I'll try to dig up the exact quote later.

So if there were a season 2, the logical next step I guess would be to do an international version of the concept (8 countries?); on the other hand, he's already mentioned in the past that A) it'd be too expensive and nearly impossible to do logistically, B) they're an American band, so it made more sense to stick to the US.

Either way, should be fun to see what they have up their sleeves next.

richardp
12-08-2014, 03:31 PM
He could easily do Detroit and Omaha on a second season. As much as I'd love to see a KC episode about our rich jazz history I just don't see that being a thing because we don't really have any famous musicians from here other than Janelle Monae and fucking Puddle of Mudd. Not to mention we don't have a classic studio here. But our jazz history is so great.

But yeah there here are definitely other cities he could do and I would watch the hell out of a second season.

Apparently this is the trending news of the evening... not sure if this goes here or we create a new thread for this... but Dave Grohl is now is a new supergroup with Cory Taylor and other musicians including: Lamb of God's Randy Blythe, former Queens of the Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri, Clutch's Neil Fallon, former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra, Fear's Lee Ving, Off!'s Keith Morris and Prong's Tommy Victor. It will also feature current and former members of Misfits, Red Fang, Sunn O))), Bl'ast, Brujeria, My Ruin and Sacred Reich, among others.

The project is called Teenage Time Killer, and to be honest, I think it sounds pretty cool.

Record is "supposedly" going to be released in January and was recorded at Grohl's 606 studios. No word on whether this band will play any live shows together.

Unfortunately, it will be released on Rise Records, so it will probably be full of open string breakdowns, dubstep interludes and autotuned choruses. Its the only way you get on Rise Records.

It seems like everyone and their cousin had their phones out for most of the show instead of really soaking it in (I'm admittedly a bit guilty of the same, though I usually try to keep it to just a few quick snaps :)), so I'm guessing the whole thing is documented from many many angles.

Would be a fun one to do a multi-cam compilation for sometime, as long as there's decent audio somewhere and nobody else is already on top of it.

NOW the setlist makes sense! I looked at the setlist Sunday morning and was perplexed by it being 50% cover songs. I was confused... did FF just become a cover band?
But now it makes sense with all the guests there and that it was his "birthday" show.

I know a lot of people in the UK were bitching and moaning about Dave cancelling their shows and not cancelling the US leg.
But I mean, the man's leg was JUST freshly broken when those UK shows were. He's had a couple weeks to rest since then, guess a fall like that is going to take longer than a few weeks to recover from. Yep, rogers in Vancouver.

I've surprisingly never been to a show at the Gorge considering how close I am to Washington. Heard it's a fantastic venue though.

Least it's not 4 months of straight touring for them, I can see a couple decent breaks in the tour.
A Break from July 26 to August 12th And then another before the Vancouver show starts the tour back up between Aug 29th and Sept 11th.

Dave probably never anticipated how much he'd appreciate having those 2 breaks in the tour until now, heh.

I never said they didn't, I just said I doubt Dave will stick to it because he's a workaholic. Trust me, I'm not trying to talk shit about Dave. I get it. They can do whatever they want.

EP is good, loving Iron Rooster. They deserve a break, as they/Dave seem to not had a break since Sound City which was released 2 1/2 years ago. Seems longer....!

All 147 Foo fighters songs ranked from worst to best. According to SPIN anyway. Can't say I personally agree with the list 100%, but it's a good read either way.

Soooo...official announcement later tonight. Either the long-rumored breakup / hiatus, or season two of Sonic Highways (wishful thinking).

... They're actually coming to Birmingham! We rarely get rock shows of this caliber, so I'm excited about that. Here's to not driving to Atlanta! Please take note, Mr. Reznor. The only hometown NIN show to date was 2006, and sadly that was a few months before my interest in the band was renewed.

I just think it sucks...super generic and forced. I really liked "Run" too and was a little excited.

I think it's great! But then again, I heard a recording of a live version first and "meh" was my first impression of it as well.
The studio version packs much more of a punch than the live versions I've heard.

I really dig both the songs off the new records so far. Saw videos of some of the other songs coming up played live, and they're not bad either.
So far, I'm really getting into this era of the foos!

They come and go for me. My "true" introduction to the foos was "The Colour and the Shape" (I say "true" because technically the first foo song I heard was "Big Me" When I saw the video on Much Music, but it wasn't until I saw the Monkey Wrench video that I knew this band was something special)

I went out and bought the colour and the shape, and it instantly resonated with me. However, when "There is nothing left to lose" came out, I hated it and abandoned them.
Then, One by One came out and I was fully back in foo mode! Then In your honor and Echoes, Silence...etc came out and I jumped off again. Wasted Light brought me back in, but Sonic Highways pushed me away.

I have a love/hate relationship with Foo Fighters records. The ones that are good, are realllly good. But, they do have a lot of lull's in their discography. I'll give ya that.

Speaking of The Colour and the shape.... why do I no longer have this record in my CD collection???? WTF.... What Blasphemy is this? Where did it go? Straight to the thrift store for me today to see if I can find a copy for $2 I guess....

I just finished my first listen, the record has a very "classic rock" vibe to it. Like something you'd hear in the 70s or earlier. Lots of classic rock influence here.
It's better than Sonic Highways (I hated that record), but I won't be placing this record high on my "Best of the foos" album list.

The stand our tracks for me were both the singles, 'Run' and 'The Sky is a Neighborhood'

I probably won't be listening to this record very often. It wasn't awful, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Wasn't sure how much I cared for the record the first time around, but it's since grown on me. The 3 songs you mentioned are probably my favourite tracks from the whole thing.

I keep going back to Dirty Water in particular.

The album is very different from what they usually do.

Yup, the drums have surprisingly no punch, there's no air but artificial, cymbals sound congested and guitars don't pop out. Songs seem quite good (I'm on my first listen) so it's really a shame.
(RANT ON) I WISH albums would be mixed with the EBUR128 or ITU1770 standard (with a higher ref level than cinema of course) as to preserve the dynamics. People don't need overcompressed shit, it only makes them lower the listening level and produces distorsion ffs. (/RANT OFF)

I'll admit, I really dig the new album. I'd echo sentiments about the compression, but aside from that I actually enjoyed Concrete and Gold much more than I enjoyed the majority of Sonic Highways. After I get back from vacation I'll probably buckle down and get a GA ticket to their Wichita show, too.

Their first four albums are flawless in my opinion, One by One might even be my favourite FF record. Everything else is pretty good, there's always a bunch of standout tracks, but as full album listens they fall kinda short. They should definitely give Rami Jaffee more of the spotlight, I really like what he brings to the band's sound.

I've seen the foos live 7 times (wow, I had to count that one. I didn't realize I've seen them that many times), but they always put on a fantastic show.

I was visiting my friend in Edmonton in 2003 and we were going to hit up the foo fighters show there for the One by One tour. We were just hanging around downtown the day of the show killing time, walking around and we joked about what your average foo fighters fans looked like. We were like "They're just regular guys in orange t-shirts and jeans, they can be anyone." then in the distance we saw a group of 5 or 6 guys walking towards us and we one of them had an orange t-shirt on and we said "See, here's a group of Foo fans coming our way now" to our surprise, it actually WAS the foos....

We stopped Dave and he was nice enough to take photos with us and sign my one by one album cover. That's probably my best random celebrity sighting story I have. That was an awesome day.

I have only seen them once (I've had tickets for three shows - long story), and they played, no shit, about 30 songs that night. Motorhead was supposed to open for them, but due to weather, were unable to make their flights. So FF just played forever instead.
