What sort of songs will you be focusing on? For instance, the list of halos? Songs that are particularly meaningful to you? All of them?

I really enjoyed reading the first post, can't wait for more.

I don't know yet. If there is enough response to it, and demand for more, I'll do as many as I can.

Really cool idea, I enjoyed the first post. Dammit, now I'm tempted to do my own NIN song analysis-- we could have dueling song blogs, our battle coming to a fever pitch over the deeper meaning of Just Like You Imagined...sounds nifty.

Fantastic idea and execution. I hope you'll continue to update this thread when you draft new entries.

A very good read! NIN virtually lends itself to this sort of Blogging - it being so well documented online and all. I once had a similar idea, making elaborate features for every Halo-Release (back when I had a 12 hours/week-job)... but since I write in german, the target audience would never be big enough to justify the effort.

I hope you keep these posts coming! Good work!

Thanks everyone. "Sanctified" is coming next, very soon. Also: you can now simply bookmark http://ninsongs.com if you prefer. Shorter, easier to type and remember... and pass it along :)

On vacation right now but I wrote a new post (http://ninsongs.wordpress.com/2013/06/20/kinda-i-want-to/) on the plane!

Suggestion: instead of linking to the Youtube page, embed the Youtube player, but only the stop/start thing when necessary. Pitchfork do it occasionally but I have no idea how to do myself. That way people can play the track on the page without having to open new tabs etc., but you don't need to have the entire (usually still) video.

Suggestion+1 - link to Spotify player too, because of the various countries that block youtube

Loving the blog so far though. Are you going to delve into PF too, for the title track and MJO?

If for nothing else, this project is awesome because of the links to the old demos. Forgot how great they were, in their own weird little way. Seriously though, digging it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Yes, sheep, I want to do MJO & PF at some point. Not linking to Spotify, though — they don't have most of the versions I want to use as examples.

I'd like to, but it's not mobile compatible and bogs down loading time. There may be an occasional inline video, when it's critically important to the article, but these links are mostly for reference only.

Quick little rundown on "That's What I Get" (http://ninsongs.wordpress.com/2013/06/28/thats-what-i-get/) composed on the airplane today.

"..after you just taught me how to kiss....you" is a great line, sir. ;p It's like he's quickly trying to cover up the fact she is his first kiss by adding "you" at the end.

Er, I see what you mean.

Oh yeah: here's a new post (http://ninsongs.wordpress.com/2013/07/11/the-only-time/) that talks about the word "fuck" a lot more than the song "The Only Time".

piggy

Great write-up as always, but SICNH has the first F-bomb in a NIN lyric. Unless you're talking about the fact that this is the first use where 'fuck' actually refers to a sex act, in which case I apologize for my quibbling.

As far as we know, "The Only Time" pre-dates "Something I Can Never Have", which isn't on any of the existing demo recordings.

I see. I thought you were speaking in terms of material that has been commercially released as opposed to demo versions, and then going in track list order.

Great work!

I really enjoy how these posts seek to place the songs in their proper historical and political context.

I am so jealous right now it's not even funny. As much as it pains me to give you a compliment in my current seething state I must admit thats a damned fine review. First proper review we've had so far that actually reviews the damned thing instead of simply talking about Trent Reznor. Granted it is an important aspect when it comes to a NIN album but right now I want to know about the damned tracks!

Disappointed is currently my favourite track aswell so I'm very much looking forward to hearing the studio version. After reading your review however, While I'm Still Here now currently sits at the top of my list of songs I want to hear. It sounds like such a conceptually different song than what we're all used to hearing from Trent.

Anyways, thank you for the review you lucky bastard <3
