My guess is the deal with Columbia includes at least 3 albums. They are not going to spend money on marketing him up just to have him go independent (or dissapear) again.

The whole album should be premiering this week, technically.

I have to say, Columbia has done a damn good job keeping this one under wraps. And I've been doing my best not to add to the pointless noise going on in this topic that boils down to "LEAK FUCKER", but after reading botley's incredible review, fuck it. LEAK FUCKER.
And eight hours after I cracked and joined the chorus, there it is.

You're all welcome.

It's been a LONG time since I've seen across-the-board praise for a NIN album. I'll wait to see if this holds up after the initial shock wears down/official release, but it's really cool seeing everybody enjoying the same piece of work. It's been a LONG time since I've seen across-the-board praise for a NIN album. I'll wait to see if this holds up after the initial shock wears down/official release, but it's really cool seeing everybody enjoying the same piece of work. And the favorites aren't even narrowed down to one or two. They're all spread out, which is awesome.

I'm burning this baby to a CD for my car, and it's not coming out for...a while.

Praise has been almost universal across the entire internet.

I finally think I understand what he means by "minimalist". He means "no walls of head blasting noise". Which holds true so far, there's no Mr Self Destruct or Somewhat Damaged chorus going on here.

Two listens in and I love this. One or two tracks may not stand the test of time but some really incredible stuff here. My ONLY criticism is that Copy of A into Came Back Haunted into Find My Way seems a little jarring. Like it could have used a little bit of a outro/intro to connect the songs better but maybe that's just because I've heard them as singles.

first listen down. i liked it a lot, but did not love it outright... but going to give it a second listen in a few to see what really sticks. just finishing up the three mixes. surprisingly loving those? the beatles-esque aspect of the todd rundgren remix is very welcome. the psychic tv remix of 'while i'm still here' is as dark and weird as you'd expect while still retaining the same warmth, and it's nice to hear genesis trading verses with trent.

a few quick observations:
1. 'all time low' makes excellent use of the final fantasy NES intro music... cracking me up a bit.
2. the closing half of 'various methods of escape' is worth the slow, meandering build.
3. 'in two' is probably my favorite, outside of copy of a/everything
4. sax honks in 'while i'm still here' remind me slightly of 'neukoln'- the closing instrumental of 'heroes'- neat.
5. lindsay buckingham owns the intro of 'all time low'- really welcome addition

lots of funk, lots of hooks, some excellent drum machine/beat work. seems like a reaction to the current crop of pop artists who are cribbing the NIN sound.

ps- for those not listening to a lossless rip-- the VBR links that went around this morning sound pretty great, if they were truly encoded with LAME V0 they should sound very close to lossless. i never mind V0 in the 256 range as far as mp3s go...

I've already read a few "NIN is dead" comments somewhere else, lol.

I've the feeling that this album is pretty close to what Interscope wanted when they asked Trent to collaborate with Timbaland, a song like "Satellite" would fit in a Justin Timberlake album quite well, and this could be said about several other tracks, it's very poppy and commercial, and I don't mean that this is a bad thing at all, but I'm wondering what will Chris Cornell think when he listens to this album after the comments that Trent made about "Scream", lol. I know it's not the same thing at all, "Scream" was such an obvios sell out move to reach mainstream audiences and save his declining solo career back then while this is a proper NIN album that just happens to have a more accesible and poppier sound, but Trent is going to receive sooo much shit from so many people for this album (not from me)... I guess he just doesn't care anymore about those things. XD

Don't get me wrong, I'm not shitting on thi album, quite the contrary, but I can see the baclash that is coming from so many "true fans" (not here, where it seems that people are receiving the album very positively).

And to think, people were saying that Trent's foray into the world of ambient/minimalistic electronic music for the last 3-4 years would hurt what NIN sounds like.

If anything, in hindsight, that seems like the absolute best route he could have taken to help create the new Nine Inch Nails.

VMOE: HTDA call back "illuminates the (final) scene"
Running: Is it me or musically I'm noticing a lot of musical call backs to PHM?

The main beat/bass of the verse for "I Would for You" reminds me so much of El-P's "The Jig is Up"

This is scary exciting. I think I'm going to have to head home at lunch and DL the leak. Seeing all these uber positive reviews have my hopes sky high right now. I'm trying to keep my expectations in check because I want to be blown away on my first listen. And to top it off I haven't even downloaded the rehearsal stuff yet. Christmas came early for sure this year.

i'm not really digging the remixes so much and i think i like the live version of Copy of A better so far which is weird as i normally prefer studio versions..just sounds beefier and more engaging live.. but i still fucking love the album..can't even pick out a favourite they're all too fucking good.

Well, I got around to listening to the remixes. I was floored by the pipe organs on the Find My Way remix. I'm not exactly churchy. Didn't grow up with the stuff, really, but those are some excellent sounds to hear. The While I'm Still Here is really surreal. Really, really surreal. I like the original better.

I love that the tracks we heard prior to the leak (Copy of A, Came Back Haunted, Everything, Find My Way, Disappointed) are by and far EASILY the worst tracks on the album.

Not saying the tracks are bad (and this is from someone who loves Everything), but if the tracks were arranged in order from best to worst, they'd be at the bottom.

But the "worst" track on an album like this is still fucking great.

This album is goddamned delicious.

The sax honks at the end of While I'm Still Here sound just like the sort of horns that David Byrne and St. Vincent utilized for Love This Giant. I can't deal.

Okay, in all seriousness- these songs have more variety than ANYTHING he has done since The Fragile. Quiet parts, loud parts, unique instruments, soundscapes, interesting vocal deliveries, explosions of raw emotion and power.... it has ALL those layers. There is some complex stuff going on here- the songs carry so much tension, and have a bit of unpredictability to them that pretty much ensures that it will hold up over repeat listens. Yeah, this is more overtly poppy than anything he has done, but it's done expertly. It sounds like a very matured version of NIN, led by a guy that has a more sophisticated view of the world than "everything fucking sucks my life sucks fuck you all" and though I'm sure most of us have related to that outlook before and could have related to it again now, its goddamn amazing to see Trent at the point in his life where he could make this album. It has it's dark corners, to be sure, but this is a much more grown up NIN.

Knee jerk reaction from me:

TDS > Fragile > Hesitation Marks > Year Zero > Everything else.

Could see Year Zero over taking this, but as I listen more and more I think that's unlikely. This is about as good as we could have hoped for from Trent. Jesus fuck, this album is great, and definitely does take NIN to a new place. Going to jam this nonstop until at least November, when I see them live!

Oh, and I gotta add- Hearing Came Back Haunted in the context of the album makes me love it even more. Everything doesn't have the role I was expecting it to, but it fits in here. Probably the worst song, though- which is fine, cuz I love it.

Just finished listening to this.

It was only my first listen, so maybe my opinion will change when the novelty wears off... but that may have been one of Trent's best albums.

More on this story at 11.

I think this is his best album since WT. Possibly since The Fragile. Stand outs for me so far are: All Time Low, Satellite, Various Methods, and running.

The rest of it is fucking awesome too, though.

I see CBH getting a lot of meh, which is cool I guess, but I still think its a fucking awesome tune. probs one of my favorites on the album.

If you just want to listen, the whole thing is on YouTube, although the video is a little weird and has several minutes of silence between each song. This is how I'm getting my fix while I'm at work.

Finally got around to listening to the remixes. Meh. I didn't really expect to like them anyways so it's all good. I'm very picky with music so seeing bands I've never heard of usually means I won't be a fan. There are rarely exceptions.

Sorry for slightly changing the subject but I got a fucking suprise by Dead Mau Five's remix of Ice Age which was actually fucking awesome. Really did not expect that at all as I really am not a fan of his usual stuff

Doesn't that sax only play one note, or am I misremembering? If that's the case, he might be able to play sax with one hand and do tambourine with the other. Or maybe he could get Cortini to hold the buttons on the sax for him while he blows and does tambourine. Yeah. Yeah. I like this.
