Release date: May 4, 2012.

Official site: http://marvel.com/avengers_movie

You can view the first trailer there; it's set to the music of some obscure 90's grunge band no one's ever heard of before.

I'm really excited about this movie. I'm hoping it will be good but as I said on Old ETS, it will either be awesome or it will be a spectacular failure. My first impression from the trailer is that RDJ will have all the great lines ("Dr. Banner, your work is unparalleled. And I'm a huge fan of the way you lose control and turn into an enormous green enraged monster.") although Chris Evans/Steve Rogers "You're a big man in a suit of armour... take that away, and what are you?" was spot on. Samuel L. Jackson seems as bad ass as ever and Tom Hiddleston's Loki looks really really pissed (and he was the best thing in Thor).

And we got a first look at the new Hulk! I'm still sad that Ed Norton isn't back but I really like Mark Ruffalo and I think he'll do a good job.

So, what do you think?

marodi

I think I must be the only one excited about this movie so I'll just keep talking to myself.

A couple of new images that were released this week:

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/5095/caphebw3000x2000.jpg

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/8640/avengerscoulsonthor.jpg

I think that Cap's costume is better than the one he had previously but there's still something not quite right about it. I don't know what it is though; it's just... not right,

And for those who hasn't seen it yet, here is the extended Super Bowl commercial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bGt-saFvkNk

The group shot is cheesy as hell but the scene where Hawkeye is shooting while falling is badassery at its best.

Of course, the "I have an army/We have a Hulk" lines have turned into an instant meme on Youtube. My favorite variation so far:

Loki: I have a knee.
Tony: We have Hawkeye.

Rumors are there's a new trailer coming out next week. I'll post it for my own enjoyment then, if it's true.

I think it looks like fun, but I also think Cap's uniform looks like utterly cheesy crap.

Yeah, the Captain America outfit is COMPLETELY shitting the bed on this.

They can't get that awfulness battle-damaged and finally rip that retarded headgear off FAST ENOUGH, imho.

:-\

Everything else looks GREAT, though.

And...was that an army of Ultrons?

While we're waiting for the new trailer (it's supposed to come out tomorrow) here's a couple of things old and new.

First: new poster

http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/Marvel Avengers Assemble new UK poster.jpg

I think that Captain America was still growing while he was frozen solid. He looks at least 20 feet tall on that poster.

And in case someone missed them: the Marvel One Shots

This one is called The Consultant and was found on the Thor Blu-Ray

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uPBGStuFgw

The second one is called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer and was found on the Captain America Blu-ray

I always knew that the Son of Coul was a bad ass mofo under that placid look of his.

That poster is bad ass.

Thanks for posting those vids, I own neither Blu ray and had no clue about them. They were a very nice prelude to tomorrow's trailer. Much obliged.

I wonder if it will reveal anything we don't already know? Has it been confirmed yet if Loki is the only villain? I heard the Skrulls mentioned.. but who is leading controlling them outside of Loki? I feel like something would have slipped by now. As much as I loved his character in Thor, and he is fucking bad ass, I feel like this movie is going to need a little bit more than him to take it to the next plane of epicness.

marodi
02-29-2012, 02:27 AM
You're welcome about the videos. I don't own either Blu-rays (only the DVDs; that's because I'm old fashioned like that) and I was very pleased when I came across those one shots on Youtube. So far, they are the only two but I hope they aren't the last.

As for Loki, I remember a while ago reading that there was indeed another bad guy in the movie but nothing's been confirmed. There were interviews I read (I might track them down later) where Tom Hiddleston said that the Loki we'll see in The Avengers is very different than the one we saw in Thor; apparently, something happened to him in the black hole created by the destruction of the Bifröst and it pushed him a little further along the "batshit insane" lines. And there are rumors that the trailer will be "spoiler-ish" and that it will reveal who's in his army.

Here an interview (slight spoilers inside) that was posted a few days ago where Hiddleston talks about who he's fighting against in the movie. (http://www.reelz.com/movie-news/13241/tom-hiddleston-discusses-lokis-battles-with-captain-america-and-the-hulk-in-the-avengers)

YES IT IS.

Must. Remember. To. Breathe.

OMG the shot of the Hulk catching a falling Iron Man. And Loki in a suit (wait, what? You've got to admit: he is hot!).

OMG the shot of the Hulk catching a falling Iron Man. And Loki in a suit (wait, what? You've got to admit: he is hot!).

I accidentally read about that before watching the trailer and it still elicited a nerd-y yelp when I actually saw it. I've totally got a heterosexual man crush on Tom Hiddleston, too. He is fantastic. I can't wait to see more verbal parrying and hopefully some godly fisticuffs between he and Chris Hemsworth. Very curious how ol' Thor gets back to Midgard. My brother and I were hypothesizing it could be a Loki trick - Hiddleston did say via the Avengers twitter chat that Loki is more mischievous this time around.

I can't believe this movie is coming out as soon as early May. Of the Big 3 superhero flicks this Summer (Avengers, Dark Knight, Amazing Spider-Man), this is the most "pinch me" of them all. The Dark Knight Rises is the safest bet, but just the fact that The Avengers exists and looks this fun makes it hard not to be my most anticipated.

Another awesome trailer! Looks like there should be plenty of sweet 3D dogfight action, too.

Speaking of which, that's GOTTA be the Skrulls! I'm pretty sure I saw green skin and pointy ears to go along with that space ship, at least.

And I hate to harp on the subject, but with each new bit of footage released I find myself suffering increasing disbelief that they let that piece of shit Captain America costume slip through the cracks all the way onscreen. Especially that godawful goddamned helmet. Argh.

Still, the very fact that an Avengers movie that looks this awesome even EXISTS is a supreme accomplishment and truly a nerdgasm-worthy feat to behold with great joy! I've only been waiting for this movie since I was, like, THREE years old, lol. And anyone who grew up watching all the shitty, low-budget Marvel adaptations in theaters (and zomfg the ones for TV) through the '80s and '90s NEVER expected we'd see the Avengers done so excellently as it seems to have been handled by Marvel Studios.

I'm really, really appreciative of that so I can't wait to see this movie.

Except for that fucking Captain America headpiece. Stark needs to repulsor ray Cap's face or Hulk needs to deck him or Loki can pry it off with his goddamned cane OMFG just take it away.

Broadbent
03-02-2012, 03:03 AM
Man I wish I hadn't of watched that trailer. It looks like the gave away some of the best shots in the movie. I'm not going to the Avengers for the story, I'm going because I want to see Hulk jump and catch a falling Iron Man!

And ya the Captin America costume is a bit hokey, but it was in the comic books too. And is probably the toughest Marvel costume to transfer to the big screen

There's more than a few new shots in this version. In fact, there are some really awesome ones. I almost wish I didn't watch it. I just need to forget about this movie 'til May.

Also, AMC is doing the "Ultimate Marvel Marathon" (Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man II, Thor, Capt. America, Avengers):

God I love that Japanese trailer! There's also a bit of new footage in the German trailer (that came out a couple of weeks ago, I think?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLs6RBpD6L8

The video should play with the subtitles. Side note: watching those trailers in other languages reminded me how painful it will be for me to have to watch this movie in French when it comes out. I really have to start teaching English to my cinema going friends...

In other news: the following link give a preview of the apparel and merchandising that are tied up with the movie. Some t-shirts are really ugly but others are kind of cool. I'm getting all the bookmarks, for sure and I'd give my left arm for one of the movie cells. Also: I now have a legitimate reason to buy Lego sets: it's because they are collectibles and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I've always loved Lego blocks.

Good one Hazekiah! And if I can rant a little more: what's more annoying is that big movies like that are also screened in their original language so I could see it if I wanted to. Another couple annoyances about having to watch it in French: I know what the actors sound like and when they are badly dubbed, it's even more painful. Also: I'm good at reading lips so while I'm listening to the French translation, I know what they are saying in English. Grrrr...

This man is Ryan Meinerding and he worked on the design of Cap's costume.

I'm so glad the theater I work at is small and not getting the Avengers. Chances are I can get that weekend off. I'm seriously considering getting tickets to the theater across the street since they're doing a marathon of all the Marvel movies leading up to a midnight showing of the Avengers. I've been so pumped for this movie since I saw the post credits scene of the first Iron Man movie when it came out.

Yep. Whedon tried to deny it but the journalists believed RDJ. Then it was also confirmed by Mark Ruffalo. Meh!

The world premiere was held in Hollywood Wednesday night. RDJ's stole the show, as usual. God I love him!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew9pyMRTXKY

Of course, a lot have leaked after the premiere. For example, Loki's army has been revealed as the Chitauri . The feedback from Twitter is overwhelmingly positive; apparently, the Hulk steals the show.

Also: someone does die in the movie and this death is a pivotal moment in the plot. I know who it is; it has been confirmed to me by someone I've been speaking to who saw the movie. I won't post it here but if you really want to know, PM me.

A lot of TV spots have also been released; this one is my favorite:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wT8wqmX3zto

And an expended clip of a scene between Loki and Tony has also been released:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2TYA7t3MmY&feature=related

Somehow, it ends by Tony being thrown out the window. Go figure!

Oh and if you've been refraining from watching all the TV spots and trailers and clips because you're afraid of spoilers, it has been said by those who saw the movie that they only reveal about 10% of the plot.

This opened here in Australia today and I thought it was by far the most entertaining and enjoyable super hero film to date. While I had my reservations beforehand full credit to Whedon for pulling this off. The interaction between the Avengers and their backstories from previous films is really well done, and the entire cast gets plenty of screen time. The humour and one-liners in particular are impeccably timed and there are a few in the final battle scenes that left the whole audience laughing. And speaking of battle scenes the final action sequence is awesome, much on the same scale as Avatar only better executed than any of Michael Bay’s Transformers films.

This was immensely fun and I think it sets a new benchmark for films of this kind. Can't wait to watch it again.

I had no interest in this despite some cautious optimism that Joss Whedon could make it kind of tolerable. I'm beyond burned-out on superhero movies and mostly wish the whole genre would just go away for a while, stop hitting us with the same stuff every summer. But the advanced buzz on this is so good that I've really begun looking forward to it, and I hope that it's great and some suits, somewhere, are able to figure out it's put up or shut up time re:superhero flicks.

im excited too, but i'm more of a DC guy, so it's depressing to see DC sooooo behind the ball with their movies other than Batman. They should be setting up a JLA movie down the line, and there isn't even a hint that that is happening.

No, Warner Bros is too busy letting Zack Snyder make another bad movie and wondering what the hell they're going to do with Batman sans Nolan.

Also, Warners is probably making sad-face for passing on the Joss Whedon-helmed Wonder Woman project.

Brilliant! Saw it in IMAX 3D this morning.

Somehow they've managed to make a 143 minute film that doesn't drag or lull, allows all the characters plenty of screen time AND bring them together to play off each other perfectly.

No spoilers as it's only been out a day or two but watch out for plenty of great fights (not just goody vs baddy!) and try to see it in 3D if you can as the Iron Man HUD effect is amazing!

All in all, it's about as good as you could quietly hope for given all the stories dovetailing into it. Might even go and see it again next week - it's very worth it.

Maybe. Cap was not my favorite, but it was surprisingly good. I think he's a hard guy to get right. Campy, dated, goofy mask - yet somehow, they made it right.

I may be in the minority that thinks Captain America was the best of the stand alone films, aren't I?

Not necessarily. My 2 older brothers might agree with you - when we saw it in theaters, we all thought it was extremely fun and well executed. It was a superhero Indiana Jones film! Of all the Marvel Studios films, I was probably smiling the most through Cap. But I was the only one of us who liked Thor more - I've definitely seen it most at this point. The family conflict between Thor, Loki, and Odin is more compelling to me than any of the other hero/villain match-ups we've seen - it doesn't get much more personal than that kind of relationship. It doesn't hurt that Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Sir Anthony Hopkins are all beyond capable actors, too.

I've of course been reading and watching a bunch of interviews lately, and I love that Hiddleston has been emphasizing how Loki sent the Destroyer to Earth at the end of Thor, instead of himself. In other words, we haven't seen what he can really do on Midgard when he's got serious business and isn't slinking around incognito.

Also, this interview is incredible. Hiddleston's Chris Evans and Sam Jackson impersonations are hilarious. Don't forget to stay for the rapping at the end.

I'm not sold on his Chris Evans but his Sam Jackson is so spot on it's eerie. If you go on the front page of imdb, there's a few short interviews with different cast members; Hiddleston is one of them and he does an incredible Al Pacino impersonation in it. I'm liking this guy more and more.

For those of you in North America: there's a rumor that there will be an end credit scene at the end of the movie. There's already one mid-credit (those of you who's seen it know of what I'm talking about) but the rumor is that another one will be added at the very end of the credits, especially for the American audience.

This rumor started when RDJ and Mark Ruffalo talked about an additional scene being filmed. There is now another source who sort of confirms this rumor.

THE FOLLOWING LINK CONTAINS A MAJOR SPOILER FOR THE MID-CREDIT SCENE OF THE AVENGERS. DO NOT CLICK IT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S IT ABOUT BEFOREHAND.

Sorry for the shouting; I just wanted to be sure the message went through. Please don't hurt me!

Here's the link for those of you who's already seen the movie (and for those of you who can't have enough spoilers, like me; I already know everything that happens in the movie)

Oh man, I love his Chris Evans - maybe it's just what he says ("You ARE Thor!"), but I am immensely entertained by both impersonations.

I had a serious outburst of laughter when I read this bit from Crave (http://www.craveonline.com/film/interviews/187769-the-seventh-circle-of-hell-an-interview-with-tom-hiddleston#.T6A7IZNdAvw.twitter), which is in regards to Tom being in The Deep Blue Sea (you may also remember Sam Jackson's Deep Blue Sea):

I just saw The Deep Blue Sea (http://www.craveonline.com/film/interviews/185321), and you were marvelous in that…Thank you very much.

I interviewed Terence Davies (http://www.craveonline.com/film/interviews/185233) and he said that you were the only person who brought up the shark movie.
[Laughs] Well, it’s because, at the end of the shoot for this [The Avengers], I was with Sam Jackson. We had a sort of dinner in New York. And I sat next to him, and he said, “What are you doing next?” I said, “I’m going to Toronto, because there’s a world premiere of this thing I did called The Deep Blue Sea.” And he went [Samuel L. Jackson impersonation], “Deep Blue Sea?! I was in the f*cking Deep Blue Sea.” So I told Terence this just before we went on stage for our Q&A and he loved it.

So I've got my ticket for 12:15am tonight. It's going to be a very interesting evening. Hopefully arriving an hour in advance is good enough to get some decent seats!

Holy fucking shit. I just woke up after going to the 12 hour marathon of Avengers movies at an AMC theater. Honestly, I think that was the perfect way to see Avengers. Every movie leading up into it, the audience we saw it with, it honestly couldn't have been better. I got Thor 3D glasses and my friend got Captain America. People kept coming up to me to see them because I guess the Thor glasses were the rare ones. The Avengers was the best movie I have seen in a long time. I was disappointed by Edward Norton not being brought back but I really bought Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. Hulk was amazing in this, they finally got him right.

Also, my audience lost it when they showed Thanos.

There will be over 30 minutes of deleted scenes on the Blu-ray/DVD (http://collider.com/the-avengers-deleted-scenes/159451)

Gah, I can't believe I didn't stay until after the credits to see the final scene, although based on what I've read, it wasn't vital unlike the scene revealing Thanos.

I enjoyed it, especially Hulk's scenes, but I feel like the movie would benefit from a second viewing, considering the first half of the movie was just setting chess pieces into place.

Jesus H Christ on a cracker.

Holy Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I'm speechless and yet I could write a fucking essay about that movie. I know it doesn't make sense and I don't care.

Is this the best superhero movie ever? I don't know; all I know is that it's going to take a lot to top it. Watching this movie is like being 10 years old all over again, when you still believed that there were superheroes to save you from the bad guys; it makes you feel like you felt back then, before reality set in and before you became disillusioned and cynical. At one point, Nick Fury says:"I still believe in heroes" and for a little over 2 hours, I did too.

But the beauty of this movie is that it's not just an extravaganza of punches and explosions; there is meat on these bones. Banner, for one, gets a great arc without saying much; but everything he says count. Stark adds to this in a way that makes you rethink what you thought about "the other guy". Loki is completely batshit insane but I did see glimpse of a possible redemption for him. But every single one of these characters have a background that motivate their actions and we get to see that.

The acting is top notch. These people are comfortable in their roles and it shows. RDJ is... well, he's RDJ. I've spoken enough about him and about how I worship the ground he walks on that you know I'm not partial when it comes to him. The two people that I've found the most impressive are Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hiddleston. Ruffalo, of course, is the new kid in town. I did love Ed Norton in TIH but Ruffalo is "it". His Banner is flawless. And the Hulk? Like many have said before me: they finally got the Hulk right! It's worth the price of admission just to see him. And Loki? Like I said: batshit insane. A creepy and manipulative mofo. At the same time, he's absolutely fascinating; you just can't have enough of him even though you know in your guts that he's very bad news. He's the flame to your moth. And Hiddleston nails it. He's nothing short of amazing in the role. Also: I'm sorry about the fangirl moment but Hiddleston should be made to wear only 3 pieces suit. He looks fantastic in them. I rest my case. (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm925806848/nm1089991)

There's something I feel the need to say now that's not really related to having seen the movie but I just can't keep quiet about it; it's been bugging me for some weeks now. There seems to be some die hard fanpeople (boys and girls) that are either pro Marvel (i.e. Avengers) or pro DC Comics (i.e TDKR) and who likes nothing more to trash the other camp's movie either by saying who's going to be "better"; who's going to make more money and so on and so forth... This level of childishness is amazing to me. I don't get it. First of all, why can't we enjoy both franchises? I know I do. I love both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and while I don't know much about the Bane character in TDKR, I'm still going to go see it and I expect to enjoy it. Comparing the Avengers to TDKR is, to me, a bit like comparing apple to oranges because I don't see those 2 movies appealing to the same audience at all. There were 5 years old kids in the theater tonight; they enjoyed the movie thoroughly. I don't think TDKR is meant to be enjoyed by 5 years old. It's another level of story telling altogether. And in the end, what matters is that you get out of the theater satisfied with the movie you've just seen because it's your hard earned money you've just spent to see it; the movie's rating on Rotten Tomatoes or how much it's just made on its opening weekend is irrelevant. That's my 2 cents on the subject.

Oh and that mid-credit scene?

Motherfucking Thanos motherfuckers! Shit's about to get real!

I liked it. The only part that really stuck out in a neg way is the Hulk "smash" against Thor. the pose, the timing, everything. It just screamed anime. not that it was a bad thing, just not a good fit for this movie.

Lots more to love. The Cap grenade slap, The one shot battle part where we follow from one Avenger to the other across town, and the scattered humor.

Thought it was a fairly generic OTT comic book movie for the most part, elevated quite a bit by Whedon's knack for well-timed humour.
Loved the new Hulk, both in terms of Ruffalo's performance and the Hellknight-esque monster interpretation. Thor has to be the world's most annoying superhero. Captain America came off surprisingly sympathetically (I didn't see his movie), largely because he's the only one of the superheroes that's convincingly vulnerable (though also because of a nicely defined character and some fun little comedy moments).
I thought one of the main problems was that each action scene didn't have a goal in sight - when two more-or-less invincible superheroes face off, they'll pretty much just be going at it until they're distracted, which can happen at any arbitrary moment. Yawn. Even in the bigger sequences... Threat wasn't well-established during the battle on the aircraft carrier, as it was just a small team of grunts up against the superfriends. And in the final battle, they're just stuck fighting endless waves of enemies we have no reason whatsoever to be interested in or perceive as a credible threat, with no finish in sight until they happen to come across the scientist near the end. Again, yawn.

If it wasn't for the sense of humour, I'd write it off as an Iron Man 2-style slice of comicbook generica. As it is though, 7/10 from me.

Exactly, I think it doesn't make sense to compare the two. Perhaps actually preferring one line of comics to the other, but when it comes to movies, it doesn't really matter. And as you said, Avengers and TDKR are like apples and oranges. Avengers is an ensemble story that is more about the dysfunctional nature of the team than it is about the actual threat. What is actually going on the story doesn't matter because what is going with the characters is infinitely more interesting. The plot is there to facilitate the conflict amongst the team. With TDKR, it's the combination of plot and characters. With Avengers I wanted an exciting, epic sized battle carried out by a wide array of characters. With TDKR the battle is shaping up to be pretty epic, but in a completely different way. There will be no aliens; it will be something like Bane using the city to tear itself apart. The Batman movies are still the story of one man, even if he does have two personas.

I missed that because the whole theater was laughing, great scene. Really loved the movie, will probably go see it again

The same thing happened for me. I asked my friend what what said and he had no idea. I want to see this again and it is necessary to see it with a full theater. I saw it at 9 last night and I'm so glad I did. I went with 4 friends and, naturally, every seat in the theater was full. It was such a treat to feel like a kid at my age, just as everyone else in the theater was.

And the scene after the credits was hilarious. I'm glad we waited for it.

Joss Whedon is two for two this year (he only co-wrote Cabin in the Woods, but it's so clearly his that the point doesn't need to be argued). I hope they start giving this man bigger projects in the future, because it's clear that television is not the only medium he kills it in. If there's ever a big budget Buffy continuation (and if his movies keep raking in the bucks, there might be), my head would explode.

Me and my friends, and everyone in the audience, thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was not only the best superhero movie I've seen - though, in that genre's defense, I do find the whole concept lame and did even as a child - but just a good all-around movie. It felt like it had weight to it, not something you forget about instantly after leaving the theater. It was long but it didn't drag, and considering there was quite a bit of banter between the characters before the action really got set up, that's impressive. This film needs to be the benchmark for how to do a superhero movie from now on. Marvel, DC - take note.

In my opinion: Too much comedy

Mmm indeed. That's probably my only problem with The Avengers. There were some really great lines, but I'd had enough when Black Widow said something like "How is that a party?" - a.) not funny, b.) a movie like this is already so over-the-top that too much levity isn't really needed. There were some great intimate character moments, there just should have been less silliness in combination, specifically during the final act.

*minor spoilers follow*

I loved it, though. It's the only other movie I can think of that I've seen twice in the same day (in theaters). Pretty much anything with Thor was my favorite part. Steve Rogers' old-man vocabulary cracked me up ("That Loki packs a wallop"). Loved Ruffalo as Banner: I thought it was cool how they went with the more emotional version of his character as opposed to the afflicted one ("STOP lyin' to me!" <--awesome). Scarlett as Black Widow won me over - I was angry when she was cast in Iron Man 2, but she and Joss brought it. Renner did well with what little he was given, and I'm hoping that Maria Hill will be taking a bigger role in the subsequent Marvel movies (Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Cap 2).

Here's Joss Whedon doing commentary for the Iron Man vs. Thor scene.

Saw the movie tonight, and it wasn't bad. Pretty on par with my expectations.
Based on all the amazingly positve feedback and reviews this movie has been getting, I thought it was going to be alot better, and was extremely worried "The Amazing Spider-man" had some big shoes to fill. I can safely say, I don't think this is going to surpass spider-man at all, and i'm thinking that's going to be the better of the superhero movies this summer.

But, back on track here...
The movie was decent, it started off kind of weak, but I really got into it durning the airship sceen midway through the moviem that's when the tension between them started and I was really curious how they were going to band together to overcome Loki. I think Tom Hiddleston did a perfect job with that character.
Mark Ruffalo was the perfect Bruce Banner. I was upset when I heard Norton wasn't back to reprise the role, but after seeing this film and how Mark pulled off Bruce Banner, I can safely say Edward Norton wouldn't have meshed well in this film. I think he would have just clashed with the cast. He seems very... how do I out it... demanding as an actor? Like a Princess?

Robert Downey Jr/Tony Stark just stole the show for me. Every minute this guy was on the screen I absolutly loved, there is nobody better in the world to play the Tony Stark role than him, was just perfect!

Thor, I never cared for. I've been a marvel comics fan since I was a kid, and Thor always rubbed me the wrong way, I just never liked him ever, so naturally I never saw the Thor film leading into this. I was a tad lost at some points because of this, but nothing that you can't piece together eventually. There were a few Thor movie refrences, but you can draw your own picture without them.

The ending was kinda ho-hum to me to be honest. It seemed like it was just a scene out of Transformers... just with superheroes instead of robots destroying the city. Just seems like that was already done before, so I was a tad bored with that scene.

The comedy was perfect though. Someone mentioned how there was too much, but that's what held my interest the most to be honest, all the one liners, especially Tony Starks were awesome. Some were cheesy and unnessecary (thor VS hulk snippet was mentioned as being cartoony and unnessecary and I couldn't agree more).

All in all, it was a good summer popcorn blockbuster, but my faviourte of the Avengers movies still stands as the original Iron Man. That movie was just really awesome compared to all these other ones.

I'll give it about a 7/10, it was fun, but it wasn't amazing. It's not a movie I would watch again, but would defiantly go check out it's sequels.

Werner Heisenberg was 24 when he basically formally created the field of quantum physics, and he won a Nobel Prize for his work when he was just 31. Paul Dirac predicted the existence of the positron when he was 25. Kurt Godel published his incompleteness theorems when he was 25. John von Neumann did much of his great work in quantum mechanics when he was in his 20s, after being made a professor at Berlin when he was 23. Albert Einstein published his paper on the special theory of relativity when he was 26. Noam Chomsky was 27 when he published Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory. Niels Bohr was 28 when he put down the Bohr model of the atom. Stephen Hawking began publishing his work with singularities when he was in his 20s. Richard Feynman laid down the path integral formulation and the Feynman diagrams when he was 30. James Watson was 25 when he "discovered" the structure of DNA with Francis Crick (36) thanks to data from Rosalind Franklin (33).

And this is just a few. And not only is this just a few, this is just basing off major stuff. Great scientists don't just one day upon reaching some certain age wake up and now they're great, brilliant scientists: prior to the contributions for which they are known, there were years of toiling away in advanced university programs and thankless hours of developing their work. Honestly though Portman's character in Thor was the worst thing about the movie, which was okay generally. Her journal that contained "YEARS of research " was a doodling book with poorly drawn planets.. it was so laughable. Also, she seemed like a dumb ass, not a genius. (and that has nothing to do with her femininity or anything like that). She delivered her lines horribly and her silly romance with Thor was the most developed aspect of her character. Nothing told us she was a genius except for the fact that they told us she was a scientist. Her fault and the writers.

The thing that stood out about the Hulk to me was the fact that he wasn't used a lot. This time around it was more about Bruce Banner which, as a friend mentioned, was the best part of the original Incredible Hulk TV series.

There were some really great lines, but I'd had enough when Black Widow said something like "How is that a party?" - a.) not funny, b.) a movie like this is already so over-the-top that too much levity isn't really needed.

Yeah, that line was one of the few in the movie where Whedon's writing missed the mark. It wasn't really needed. Also, arguably, the scene where the NYC cop asks Captain America, "Why should we listen to you?" before Cap proceeds to eviscerate like five lizard aliens right in front of him, and then he immediately turns around and repeats everything Cap told him to do into his walkie-talkie... Obvious humor that could be seen coming from a mile away, but the audience loved it (I laughed too; in the moment, it works).

However, a careful combination of wit and silliness is Whedon's stock in trade, and the Avengers was a perfect example of him in top form, just being himself. I don't think it was too much at all; on the contrary, the movie could've easily been an overblown, overdramatic, knuckle-dragging muscle fest, but the humor elevated it, IMO.

They really nailed this movie! and better: they nailed the Hulk! They've been struggling so hard with that character for so long, and ruffalo came along with some better writing and they really had it down this time.... I'm more of an Iron Man fan but he was a show stealer all the way through.

My only issues were with Black Widow... she always seemed out of place... and in a movie with Iron Man, The Hulk , Norse Gods, and Samuel L. Jackson its tough to find her, Captain America, and Hawkeye entertaining. That said I though Chris Evans was great in that role...

A very exciting action movie. I keep joking that it was practically an animated movie... kind of like a reverse Space Jam

Yikes! They don't raise themselves for $50 mil either. If that statistic is true about an average child costing their parents $250,000 over the course of their upbringing, RDJ needs to have about two hundred more babies in support of the Avengers. The Avengers is now number 3 of all time in both domestic and international market (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-milestone-avengers-number-three-332331)

Yesterday, it passed Happy Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 with a total of 1.331 billion (international) and it passed The Dark Knight with 538.1 million (domestic).

When you love a movie, of course you want it to be a success at the box office, especially if it's part of a franchise because you want to see other movies in that same franchise being made. However, I don't think anyone expected something like this. It's madness.

Also: we have the details for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One box set (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Details-Revealed-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-Phase-One-Box-Set-31218.html)

So meh. I don't know. I really wish people would just keep things simple and not hold shit out for multiple editions, but hey, they gotta put food on the table.

Saw this for the first time FINALLY the other night and It was everything I was expecting for once from a movie. The fight scenes were pretty dam legit if you ask me. There was fighting throughout the whole movie and it never really lost it's pace. I love how at the end that everyone was fighting alone, then fighting in pairs, then coming in out of no where to help each other out. I love the part when Iron Man shoots an energy beam into Captain Americas shield and it deflects and hits some of the enemies; that me me giggle. I was really hoping War Machine would come out of no where and start to help out. I really need to see this again. Oh, and the Hulk completely stole the movie... just sayin'.

I agree; the Hulk definitely stole every scene he was in. From punching Thor in the face after they crashed the big ship to his total beatdown of Loki , Hulk was awesome. As good as Mark Ruffalo did, I still wish that Ed Norton could have played the part again. I thought he did a hell of a job in The Incredible Hulk.

Also, do I still need to black out things from a movie that's been out over a month that could be considered a 'spoiler'?

I didn't hear it the first few times because of everyone laughing and cheering, but since the theater was pretty empty when I saw it again this weekend you can hear a "HOLY SHIT I'M IN PAIN" wheeze coming from Loki after the Hulk smashes him. Coupled with the look on his face, it makes the whole scene 10 times funnier.

in terms of all ages fun, nerd geek-out factor, humor, CGI & continuity build-up/pay-off...yes.

in terms of storytelling, acting, cinematography, thematics and Nolan's ability to showcase setpieces that no one else in film can do....no, not even close. This is a superior film for the deeper things in films.

Corvus T. Cosmonaut
07-22-2012, 02:28 AM
In terms of storytelling, Avengers gets it; acting, they're about on par quality-wise despite the significantly different styles (RDJ does his campy, witty playboy billionaire every bit as well as Bale does his 10-year-old-in-40-year-old's-body playboy billionaire, for example). In both of the former, it helps that Whedon is ten times the screenwriter of dialogue that Nolan is. Overall, Avengers is also a leaner, more satisfying movie. It may not approach the same, darker themes that 'Rises' does, but darker does not necessarily mean deeper, or better.

Also, nobody else in film can 'showcase setpieces' like Nolan can? What? What does this even mean? Why is this important? What about other movies that don't intend to 'showcase setpieces'?

bobbie solo
07-22-2012, 03:20 AM
read a bit about how the prologue to Dark Knight Rises was filmed. Or Inception as a whole. the man is a master of the craft, and puts truly unique things on the screen. Nolan also does not write the dialogue iirc.

The thematics in the movie aren't stronger to me just b/c they're dark. There are multiple layers & tons of symbolism in many aspects of the film, from Bruce's "rise", to what the bat means to Gotham, to his relationship with Alfred/his family, to the populism argument outlined above. And there's even more than that. Avengers doesn't even try to go that deep with what it's trying to say. Which is fine. I'm just saying you can take away alot more from DKR than Avengers.

Corvus T. Cosmonaut
07-22-2012, 04:46 AM
Christopher Nolan is the sole credited screenwriter on Memento and Inception, and shares the credit on everything else except Insomnia. With the screenplay for Rises he shares credit with his brother.

Avengers didn't get deeper than a Saturday morning cartoon though. (Which is fine) But if one of the films is to be declared more meaningful I think Rises takes he gold. As far as writing dialogue I think Nolan is pretty stellar when you think about the various monologues his characters have. Avengers was Hollywood at its best, but Nolan doesn't even write in a typical Hollywood format and doesn't aim to accomplish the same things from dialogue that Whedon does if that makes sense. His characters are slaves to his circumstances and tend to represent players. The dialogue is written accordingly. He has no intention of copying the brisk nature of everyday speech or satisfying the audience with quick and witty conversation (he'll usually only resort to this for comic relief) His agenda is his agenda and he'll do it no matter who complains (a lot of people think the dialogue in Inception was bad when really its obviously what he was going for) I'm not saying its necessarily superior inherently just that I don't think its a give in that Whedon writes better dialogue. Like many great writers he'll sacrifice an aspect of realism within his characters to get his point across. But its cool because its usually those lines that give the films their meaning.

/ if he doesnt write his own dialogue my whole post is obviously irrelevant. Is that true? I guess just fill in the blank with (whomever writes the dialogue in Nolan's films)

Corvus T. Cosmonaut
08-08-2012, 11:34 PM
Uh, while I'll give you that 'Rises' is more thematically ambitious Nolan's dialogue is seriously among the worst I've heard at the movies all summer. I wake up in cold sweats from nightmares of the 'blank slate' exchange or the Ra's hallucination monologue or Talia's Silver-Age Hollywood death or most everything from the mouth of Blake rearing up and punching me in the face with all the finesse of a dead heifer.

Nolan does a lot of things well, but the writing in 'Rises' was like two and a half hours of descriptive narration for the visually-impaired.

So yay Avengers! I watched it with my two nephews last weekend; each one of us was wearing an Avengers t-shirt for this special occasion.

You're a nerd or you're not one, after all.

Well done. I took three years of french in high school, and remember none of it. I can actually speak more spanish now than I ever could french, just from absorbing it via pop culture. Weird.

So yeah, go Avengers. I may watch it again this weekend, just for all of RDJ's smart ass remarks and for HULK SMASHing

Re-watching it. The Hulk vs. Thor rumble on the helicarrier is pretty badass.

EDIT: Heh, finally got to see the shawarma scene...

Disclaimer: I'm not trolling.
i really hated this movie. I didn't get sense of character development, danger, plot development or really any substance at all. I was bored as shit the whole time. I liked Thor and Captain America, but Avengers just seemed like one long demo reel for CGI software. I guess it takes more to entertain me than flashy graphics.

Well, they developed the characters in their respective movies. But yeah, there wasn't much sense of "Oh shit, they fucked now" in it, you knew what was gonna go down. But I still enjoyed it.

I hope the series takes place before events in The Avengers. Don't get me wrong, I love Coulson, but I don't want to see these movies start the "everyone coming back from the dead" crap that is used so often in the comics. Death scenes, especially ones as unexpected as Coulson's death in The Avengers, lose all of their impact when you know they can just be brought back on a writer's whim.

Joss Whedon's no stranger to bringing characters back from the dead, but he's always had a mandate that there must be a major price to pay - it can't come cheaply, easily or without consequence.
Still, I'd be surprised if we saw Coulson digging his way out of his grave, losing his mind and shagging the nearest peroxide-loving Englishman.

I'm REALLY happy about Coulson comin' back! But this is unrelated - I'm not sure why, but the campus newspaper's main story in the entertainment section was the announcement that there's an Avengers sequel on the way, plus Iron Man 3, Cap'n 'Murica, Thor, and Ant Man...And everybody was so surprised. I mean, in a school this populated, I can't be the only one that rolled their eyes a bit at how old that news is now. :P I mean, I'm GLAD that people know about them and are hyped for the Marvel movies, it's just a little late, haha.

And then I found $5. The end.

Ant Man will never get made. but don't forget Guardians of the Galaxy, which will presumably flesh out Thanos more, and already has a release date.

I keep forgetting about Guardians. Even so, I just thought it was strange to see it in a half-page article in the paper a few months late.

He helped Marvel to make 2.7 billions at the box office; they would have been nuts not to sign him.

He got $50 million from the first one because he wanted a percentage of the box office gross of that film. I wonder how much he'll get this time around. Plus, I think the rest of the Avengers team and Samuel L. Jackson should get a fair percentage of the gross money as well.

Everybody is always looking for back end. Avengers grossed 1, 511, 757, 910$ worldwide(according to google anyway) So if he even asked for 1% of the backend, thats 15 million. Crazy money.

When I saw this 2 days ago, there was something about it in the back of my mind that would not come out, like when you have a word on the tip of your tongue? I've finally figured it out: James Spader and RDJ were both in Less Than Zero over 25 years ago. James Spader's character was a massive asshole to RDJ's.

Payback's a bitch man! Ultron's going to get his ass handed to him. :D
